高二英语上学期上册试题

_______ along the quiet road for an hour, and then you will see a big glasshouse in front of you.

     A. Drive        B. To driving        C. Having driven     D. Driven

Do you find it hard to memorize words? You must not be the only one. It could be    61  (help) if you say the words aloud. But this often isn’t good in a quiet classroom.

Now, researchers from the University of Waterloo, Canada, have come up  62  a new idea. They suggest   63 (draw) a picture of what you are trying to memorize!

The researchers did a study   64  (base) on the idea. They first gave a group of students some words such as “apple” or “balloon”. Then they gave the students 40 seconds, during    65   the students could either write the words again and again, or draw a picture.

When the time   66  (be) over, the researchers asked the students to do something else, like sing a song. After that , they gave the students 60 seconds to write down as many words    67  they could remember. The results showed that those who drew the words did a much   68  (good) job than those who wrote them.

So the next time you are having a hard time memorizing a word,    69  (draw) it! No worries if you’re not good at drawing. The   70  (research) say the quality of the drawing doesn’t matter at all.

Where do you keep ice? In the freezer, of course. That's what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. They’ve decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.

Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault (地下室)there. He says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (样本) is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries."

And why do scientists need to study ice from the AlpsIce formed on the top of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles (气泡) contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate. By examining ice, we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future.

The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientists from France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10 meters below the surface at a constant temperature of -50*C. This will put the scientists’ minds at rest. Losing the ice samples would be a disaster, and nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool.

28. What is the researchers' purpose of studying ice?

A. To learn about climate.

B. To learn about the Alps.

C. To trap air bubbles.

D. To reduce carbon dioxide.

29. Jerome compares ice with rocks and tree rings to state that        .

A. ice should be stored at home

B. it’s more valuable to study ice

C. ice disappears very quickly

D. it's necessary to store ice

30. What makes Antarctica a safe place to store ice?

A. Its large mountains.

B. Its function as a freezer.

C. The abundant ice samples there.

D. The absence of global warming.

31. What do scientists think of storing ice in Antarctica?

A. They consider it an easy job.

B. They’re not optimistic about it.

C. They think it will cause disasters.

D. They think it’s a reliable way.

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).

Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.

Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes“mindlessly”by taking down word for word what the professors said.

In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers’ report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”

In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

33.More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can .

A.write more notes            B.digest concepts better

C.get higher scores           D.understand lectures better

34.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be .

A.skillful            B.mindless

C.thoughtful                 D.tireless

When we were kids, my little sister Madison and I were the M&Ms—my parents' two daughters. ____36____ So it was quite a surprise when my mom and dad sat us down to let us know that baby number three was on the way when I was 10 years old. However, as soon as my brother Mac was born, he completely stole my heart and I have learned many things from having a young brother.

  ____37____

Having a baby in your life means watching your parents endlessly change diapers (尿布), make bottles, and wipe spit-ups every once in a while. I was allowed to do those things and I learned just how important it was to take care of this little life before I even hit middle school.

You watch a child grow up.

____38____ I remember how excited my family was when we discovered how fast of a reader he was in kindergarten. I'll never forget telling him bedtime stories before he went to sleep at night. It's cool to think about the entirety of his life and how far he has come.Ziyuanku.com

You teach your brother life lessons.

From a young age, my brother watched my sister and me overcome personal challenges, go to high school, and, worst of all, get our hearts broken. ____39____ Watching his sisters go through life's difficulties has taught him how he should act when he gets older.

Now Mac is 11 years old. I have no shame in telling people that one of my best friends is an 11-year-old boy. In fact, our family without him is unimaginable. ____40____

AYou stay in the know.

BYou learn about responsibility early on.

CWe received a lot of attention, and we liked it that way.

DAll I can say is that my family wouldn't be happy without Mac.

EI remember the first time Mac crawled, walked, and said my name.

FThanks, Morn and Dad, for turning the M&Ms into the Three Musketeers.

GNothing makes Mac more upset than a mean guy who hurts a girl's feelings.

More and more foreigners like to come to China. Last Friday our school was invited a foreign teacher in our city give a class to the students of Senior Grade Two. We found his class interested. I learned a lot from him. The teacher had a free talk to us with easy English . He spoke slow so that we could understand him well. Sometimes he repeated what we don’t understand. My classmates were all active in the class. To his joy, I understood everything the teacher said. And I was able to ask question in English. This class encouraged me very much. I’m sure that until we keep on practising, it will be easy for us to learn speaking English well.

In the sea there are many islands . In its warm waters there are some little ones. We call them “Coral Islands”  .

A coral island is very nice to look at .  It looks like a ring of land with tress ,  grass , and flowers on it . One part of the ring is open to the water .  There is a little round lake inside the island .

Last July, my parents and I went to visit my aunt and uncle in Seattle, a city on the northwest American coast. Dad did some research and had no difficulty in finding us cheap tickets online.

On the day of our flight, we had to wake up very early. When we checked our bags in, we found that one bag weighed too much, so we had to pay a fine. After that, Dad insisted that we go and have some breakfast at the airport restaurant. We had a lot of fun watching many different people there. Then we realized it was getting late, so we rushed to the gate. It took one hour for everyone to get on the plane, but finally the door was shut and we were on our way!

I think my favorite experience during our trip was our visit to Mount Rainier, a volcano near Seattle. It was nothing like I had expected. Before we left, my aunt lent us hats to protect us from getting sunburned, so I supposed that it would be very hot. Imagine my surprise when we drove up the mountain and I discovered the top was covered in snow and ice!

My uncle led us to a small path beyond the main trails to increase our chances of seeing wildlife. We walked over a small hill, and suddenly before us there appeared a field of snow. Small wild flowers grew up through the snow; underneath the snow we could hear rushing water — a small stream. Little animals stood still to avoid being noticed; tiny birds rose into the air. It was the most beautiful sight that I’d ever seen.

We don’t know how different our future will be in the year 2050. We can only try to imagine it.

At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will be making new friends through the Internet—even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today—we will feel a little lonely.

Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us.

Spending holiday will also be completely different. Travelling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will be using solar-powered cars, which will be much more environmentally friendly.

We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in better condition.

Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather sanguine about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen.

21. Why will people probably feel a little lonely in 2050?

A. Because the number of people will become much smaller.

B. Because there will be less face-to-face communication.

C. Because people won’t like making friends with each other.

D. Because people won’t communicate with each other much often.

22. The third paragraph mainly tells us      .

A. that computers will do all the things for human beings

B. how people will use computers to communicate with each other

C. that machines like computers and robots will help people a lot

D. how people will use robots to do the housework

23. The underlined word “sanguine” in the last paragraph most probably means      .

A. disappointed B. surprised           C. curious           D. optimistic

24. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. How people will communicate in the year 2050.

B. What our life will be like in the year 2050.

C. How people will travel and spend their holidays in the year 2050.

D. What high technology will appear in the year 2050.

Mark Twain left school when he was twelve. He had little school education. In spite of this, he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known all over the world as Mark Twain, his penname.

Mark Twain was born in 1835 and he was not a healthy baby. In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter. But with his mother’s care, he managed to survive. As a boy, he caused much trouble for his parents. He used to play jokes on all his friends and neighbors. He didn’t like to go to school, and he often ran away from home. He always went in the direction of the nearby Mississippi. He was nearly drowned  nine times.

After his father’s death, Mark Twain began to work for a printer, who only provided him with food and clothing. Then, he worked as a printer, a river-boat pilot and later joined the army. But shortly after that he became a miner. During this period, he started to write short stories. Afterwards he became a full-time writer.

In 1870, Mark Twain got married. In the years that followed he wrote many books including Tom Sawyer in 1876, and Huckleberry Finn in 1884, which made him famous, and brought him great fortune.

Unfortunately, Mark Twain got into debts in bad investments(投资) and he had to write large numbers of stories to pay these debts. In 1904, his wife died, and then three of his children passed away.

At the age of 70, his hair was completely white. He bought many white suits and neckties. He wore nothing but white from head to foot until his death on April 21, 1910.

A Chinese couple tried to name their baby “@”, saying the character best represents their love for the child, according to an official trying to standardize the national language. The unusual name stands out especially in Mandarin, which has no alphabet (字母表) and instead uses tens of thousands of multistroke (多笔画的) characters to represent words. “The whole world uses it to write emails, and translated into Chinese it means ‘love him’,” the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the State Language Commission Li Yuming.

While the @ symbol is familiar to Chinese email users, they often use the English word “at” to sound it out. With a drawnout “t”, this sounds something like “ai ta”, or “love him”, to Mandarin speakers. Li says the name is an extreme example of people’s increasingly adventurous approach to Mandarin, as commercialization and the Internet break down conventions (习俗).

Another couple tried to give their child a name that in English sounds like “King Osrina”.

Li did not say if officials accepted the “@” name. But earlier this year the government announced a ban on names using Arabic numerals (阿拉伯数字) and foreign languages. Sixty million Chinese face the problem that their names use ancient characters so uncommon that computers cannot recognize them and even fluent speakers are left scratching their heads, said Li, according to a report on the government website. One of them is the former Premier Zhu Rongji, whose name has a rare “rong” character that gives newspaper editors headaches.

6. Why did the Chinese couple try to name their baby “@”

  A. Because they wanted their baby to have a special name.

  B. Because they wanted their baby to have an international name.

  C. Because the @ symbol is familiar to email users all over the world.

  D. Because the @ symbol sounds something like “ai ta”, which means “love him” in Chinese.

7. It can be inferred that ___________.

  A. Li Yuming is in favor of the baby’s name

  B. many Chinese people use Arabic numerals in their names

  C. a majority of the Chinese people are having longer names

  D. there is little possibility for the “@” name to be officially accepted

8. The underlined part in the passage probably means___________.

  A. even native speakers find it hard to accept these strange names

  B. even native speakers can’t find these characters in their computers

  C. even those who are expert at Chinese can’t recognize these characters

  D. even those who are expert at Chinese find it hard to accept these names

9. The former Premier Zhu Rongji is mentioned in the passage because ________.

  A. people often mispronounce his name

  B. there is an uncommon character in his name

  C. he often made newspaper editors annoyed during his term in office

  D. he once stressed the importance of standardizing Chinese characters

10. The passage is mainly about ___________.

  A. how Chinese parents name their babies

  B. the importance of standardizing Chinese characters

  C. a ban on names using Arabic numerals and foreign languages

  D. the problems caused by uncommon characters used in Chinese names

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents(文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down ,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it , the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers .

Does all this mean environmental concerns (环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away.

“I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling(回收利用),” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity.

The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

12.The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to            .

Athe rapid development of small businesses

Bthe opening up of new markets

Cthe printing of high quality copies

Dthe increased use of the Internet

13.Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is  .

Ato encourage printing more quality documents

Bto develop new printers using recycled paper

Cto find new materials for making paper

       Dto plant more fast-growing trees

14. Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because          .

Apeople are concerned about the environment

Bprinters in many offices are working overtime

Csmall companies need more hard copies

Dthey see a growing market for printers

15.What would be the best title for the text ?

AComputers and Printers                           BE-mail and the Business World

  C. Internet Revolution and Environment      D. Modern Technology and New Markets

You probably started this new ______ year like most students with a determination to study
