As a student in America,I often came across difficult times that made it harder for me to move on.Fortunately,I met a special angel—Dai Mom Mom.
In my twenties,I went to study at TWU in America.Because of limited financial support from my parents,I worked part-time on campus to pay my bills. In addition,I did house cleaning for a family.Because of an imbalanced diet,I would easily feel weak. When Dai Mom Mom realized that, she invited me to her home for dinner every weekend.Besides, whenever it was time to return home, she would prepare me with some homemade dessert or food. Her kind actions were like the seeds of love planted in my heart.
One evening, when I walked out of the library,I started to feel dizzy(头晕),and my hands were shaking. Searching my pockets,I only found a few dollars left.Without a second thought,I headed for Dai Mom Mom's home. On arrival, she immediately noticed my fatigue. She seated me at the table and before long,a plate of food was set before me."Don't make yourself work so hard,"she said with a nice smile.I suddenly felt so warm that tears rolled down.
The meal was just like a Christmas gift from Heaven.I have always remembered it as the most delicious dinner I have ever had.Not only did the food satisfy my physical hunger, but it also deeply filled my spirit with genuine love. Dai Mom Mom was an angel.Because of her,I have now become a person who can pass her love along to others in need.

As I was busy working on my work plan in my bedroom, I could hear my four children playing upstairs. Suddenly, I heard the children running down the stairs and shouting, “Freddie, Freddie.” I heard the word “window” and rushed outside, heart in mouth. My three-year old son Freddie was lying on his side on the ground. I cried for my husband Simon to dial 999 and
within minutes the air ambulance arrived. They quickly took him in the helicopter( 直 升 机 ).
During the flight, Freddie was looking at me and I remember thinking was a good sign, but then his eyes began to roll. As the doctors tried to stabilize( 稳 定 ) him, I couldn’t believe what was happening.
When we arrived at the hospital in Portsmouth, there were some doctors and nurses waiting for us and they immediately set to work on Freddie. I was hopelessly wishing everything would be alright, but Freddie had broken his skull in two places and blood clots were forming in his brain.
He needed surgery(外科手术), and only a surgeon at another hospital in Bristol could do it. This
meant another helicopter ride, but we couldn’t go with Freddie because there was no enough space. Simon and I drove the long 130 miles from our home in north Devon in silence. Neither of us dared say what we were thinking, “What if we get there and he’s dead?” “Is he going to be brain-damaged?”
Freddie was just coming out of surgery when we arrived. The surgeon said it had gone well.
When I finally saw him, I hardly recognize my child—he was covered in tubes and there were wires coming out of his head.
On the third day, Simon went home to see our three girls and to pick up some clean clothes for us. While he was gone, the pressure in Freddie’s brain suddenly increased. He was taken into the operation again and this time I fell apart. Luckily, the surgery managed to stabilize Freddie. After almost a week, Freddie was finally woken up. When he opened his eyes, he looked at me. He didn’t say anything, but I knew straight away that it was my old Freddie, and that he was going to be alright. Over the next two weeks, his recovery went well. After help with learning to swallow again and encouragement with speaking, he was soon playing with his Gruffalo cards and eating meals by himself.
I still don’t know how the accident happened, but we got some idea from our girls. Clearly Freddie and Minnie had been sitting on the window ledge(窗台), and Freddie must have opened it to look out and fallen 20 feet onto the ground below.
The guilt I feel is awful—for weeks I was full of “if onlys”, and we put window locks everywhere. Six months later, although the accident seems a lifetime ago, it has changed me. I feel differently about life now. I’ve left my job to put my children first. I want to spend every minute with them.

Are you afraid of math? You are not alone. A dislike of math can begin as early as first grade, and be with you for life. 16 Actually, more and more people get uninterested in math at school.
If you suffer from math anxiety, it is not because you “just have no ability to study well”, but because, at some point, someone or something destroyed your confidence. 17 However, if you work hard to gain confidence again, you will have the ability to understand as much math as you need to.
18 For this, you can learn differently. For example, check out books from the library or study on the Internet to master the fundamental principles(基本原理). Do some exercises to build up your confidence. It is also very important to understand what the formula (公式) is doing, and why you are using that formula instead of another one.
Though you may feel it difficult to study math well, yet don’t give up so easily. You can begin by preparing for math classes in advance. 19 Take excellent notes carefully and read them again after class. Do all the required homework and recommended exercises at the recommended times. 20 Also you can turn to your teachers or classmates who study math very well.
In short, the ability to be good at math isn’t born and you have to try hard, start early and give yourself permission to fail.
A. Ask questions during class.
B. It is common at all age levels.
C. Luckily, the fear of math can be overcome.
D. If you still need help, ask for help from a teacher.
E. Try drawing pictures or creating a game.
F. If you think you are bad at math, you’ll be bad at math.
G. In a word, whatever leaning method speaks to you, use it.
Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off.You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights.Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food .If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors.Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint,go blue.
Don’t forget the clock—or the radio.People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals.Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it,actually sit down to eat.If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes.Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat.We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入)jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
37.The text is especially helpful for those who care about .
A.their home comforts B.their body shape C.house buying D.healthy diets
38.A home environment in blue can help people .
A.digest food better B.reduce food taken into your body
C.burn more calories D.regain their appetites
39.What are people advised to do at mealtimes?

C.Use smaller spoons. D.Turn down the lights.

Gold Coast family holidays are always great fun whether you are from Australia or from abroad. There are beautiful beaches, adventure parks, nature parks and so much more.
There are so many sights to see here. It is a pity to drive in a car and you’ll miss a great part of it. Australia is home to many animals and birds that can only be seen when moving slowly and going into the areas that they live.
When you are on a bicycle, you have the advantage of being able to stop whenever you want to see an interesting animal or bird that you have never seen before. It is a quieter mode (方式) of transportation as well, so you might even be able to take a picture. When you are on the beach, you can breathe that clean air and view the beauty of the water and sand. There are many choices of hiring a bicycle to experience the Gold Coast attractions. There are stores that will fit a bike perfectly to your size. People who have lost the ability to understand or use words due to brain damage are called aphasics(失语症患者).Such patients can be extremely good at something else. From the changing expressions on speakers' faces and the tones of their voices, they can tell lies from truths.
Doctors studying the human brain have given a number of examples of this amazing power of aphasics. Some have even compared this power to that of a dog with an ability to find out the drugs hidden in the baggage.
Recently, scientists carried out tests to see if all that was said about aphasics was true. They studied a mixed group of people. Some were normal;others were aphasics. It was proved that the aphasics were far ahead of the normal people in recognizing false speeches—in most cases, the normal people were fooled by words, but the aphasics were not.
Some years ago,Dr.Oliver Sacks wrote in his book about his experiences with aphasics. He mentioned a particular case in a hospital. Some aphasics were watching the president giving a speech on TV.Since the president had been an actor earlier, making a good speech was no problem for him.He was trying to put his feelings into every word of his speech.
But his way of speaking had the opposite effect on the patients. They didn't seem to believe him.Instead, they burst into laughter. The aphasics knew that the president did not mean a word of what he was saying. He was lying!
Many doctors see aphasics as people who are not completely normal because they lack the ability to understand words. However, according to Dr.Sacks, they are more gifted than normal people.Normal people may get carried away by words.Aphasics seem to understand human expressions better, though they cannot understand words.

A.By asking them to watch TV together. B.By organizing them into acting groups.
C.By comparing them with normal people. D.By giving them chances to speak on TV.
6.What do we learn from this text?
A.What ones says reflects how one feels. B. Aphasics have richer feelings than others.
C.Normal people often tell lies in their speeches. D. People poor at one thing can be good at another.
How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal(排演)and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families, always making ourselves believe that this style of life is only a temporary(暂时的)state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly given a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughedat by the English: “Have a nice day.” They speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, making us remember, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.
How often do we say to ourselves “I’ll take up horse-riding(or golf, or sailing)as soon as I get a greater job.”? But only to do none of those things when we do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a very well-paid respectable job at Daily Telegraph to go and work for a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was surprised by his decision: Why was he in this completely abnormal mental(精神) state? How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small area in the countryside? I wanted to know.
Now when I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continuous pressure. He lived in all unattractive London suburb(郊区)and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains to and back from his work.

Are people less happy or more happy the older they get ? A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.
The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the age of 18 an 85.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions(消极情绪) were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
So why would happiness increase with age ? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
The original(最初的) goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that , people reported that they felt their sleep quality improved as they got older.
69.Old people may be happier probably because _________
A. their children have grown up. B. they don’t have to work every day.
C. they can do whatever they like best. D. they are most likely satisfied with life.
70.According to the survey, when will adults feel most stressful?
A. In their twenties. B. In their fifties. C. In their seventies. D. In their eighties.
71.What may make Arthur Stone a bit surprised?
A. Women usually live longer than men. B. Middle-age men mostly are very rich.
C. Old people usually have a better sleep. D. Most of old people can’t sleep well at night.
72.Which of the following may be the topic of this passage ?
A. The difference between men and women. B. Old people’s feeling of happiness.
C. The young people and the old people. D. The connection of sleep and happiness.

Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity in the house. This does not worry us, we just light candles and carry on with what we were doing before. ●Set goals.(目标)
To learn English well, you must set some goals. 59 It will also help you to see your progress. Ask yourself, “What are my goals? What areas would I like to improve?” Think about what your goals are, and review once in a while to see that you are making progress toward your goals.
●Practice, practice and practice.
After you have set your goals, you have a better idea of what you need to practice. Just like the athletes whose goal is the Olympics must train daily, you as a language learner must practice language every day to make progress toward your goal. 60
A. Want to learn.
B. I think it is not easy to learn it well.
C. Make friends with some Americans online.
