Weekend job? Part time? Full time?
Whatever kind of job you’re going for, the way to go about it is much the same ... ( For info regarding employment law, pay, etc, see the Holiday Jobs fact file.)
Young people change job at average of four times in their first three years of employment.
Where to look
Jobs are advertised in:
*Job vacancy(空缺) websites
*Newspapers (local and national)
*Recruitment agencies
*Shop windows
You could also take your CV along your local high street---- even if they have no vacancies you can show them how excellent you are, so when they do have a vacancy you’ll be the person they call.
What’s a CV?
It stands for Curriculum Vitae, and is basically one side of A4 containing your personal details, skills and experience. You can find out how to do a CV via the links below.
Covering letters & application forms
You need to send a cover letter with a CV, and some employers want you to complete an application form. There’s detailed information on cover letters and application forms in the websites listed below.
Not got any experience?
Everyone has to get a first job, and you can big up your transferable (可转换的) skills on your CV. If the job description asks for “Excellent communication skills” or “ Organizational skills”, you can mention occasions when you had to use these skills, e.g. being a monitor or getting all your coursework in on time.
The interview
If an employer rates your CV/application form, you’ll be invited to an interview. The general rules of interviews are:
* Dress a little smarter than those who do the job already.
* Turn up on time.
* Greet the person who’s interviewing you by name: “Hi Joe/Mr Smith (depending on which you’d think they prefer), nice to meet you”.
* Tell the truth.
* Think about what questions you’ll be asked and prepare your answers in advance.

It is not a good idea to interrupt the actor Richard Griffiths in the middle of a play.During the past year he has stopped performances at the National Theatre when mobile phones have gone off,and he threw one member of the audience out of a West End play for failing to switch off his phone.
So when a mobile rang out for the third time during his performance as Hector,a teacher,in Alan Bennett's The History Boys at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York,he spoke angrily:"I am not going to compete with these electronic devices".
Griffiths'actions led a debate in the UK theatre world over whether phones should be forbidden by law from British theatres, too.Actors are already asking the government to legalise (使合法化) the use of electronic screening (屏蔽) devices to block mobile phone signals from theatres.
Technology companies market"blocking"devices that send out a high﹣powered signal on the same frequency (频率) as a mobile phone, occupying all the available spectrums (频谱).
But these are forbidden in many countries because they might prevent emergency calls from being made.
Rosemary Squire, president of the Society of West End Theatre and co﹣founder of the Ambassador Theatre Group, which operates 12West End theatres, said,"Phones are one of the biggest operational problems theatres face.We should look for equipment that could block phones or make a London﹣wide theatre rule."

A man walked into a restaurant and asked for a glass of water. Then the girl in the restaurant pulled out a gun and shot him dead. Why? People asked to give reasonable explanation for the strange happening. All kinds of suggestions were made.

All these explanations showed that the gun was used on purpose (有目的) to harm the man. The idea was easily accepted.

Grandparents Answer a Call
As a third-generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help with their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.
No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to adult children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend (趋势)is growing. Even President Obama’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and move into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study by grandparents. com, 83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson’s decision will influence grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obama’s family.
“In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn’t get away from home far enough or fast enough to prove we could do it on our own,” says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grand , a magazine for grandparents. We now realize how important family is and how important it is to be near them, especially when you’re raising children.”
Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices(牺牲), but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. Having your grandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder.
28. Why was Garza’s move a success?
A. It strengthened her family ties.
B. It improved her living conditions.
C. It enabled her to make more friends.
D. It helped her know more new places.
29. What was the reaction of the public to Mrs. Robinson’s decision?
A.17% expressed their support for it.
B. Few people thought highly of it.
C. 83% believed it had a bad effect.
D. Most thought it was a trend.
30. What did Crosby say about people in the 1960s?
A. They were unsure of themselves.
B. They were eager to raise more children.

31. What does the author suggest the grandparents do in the last paragraph?
A. Make decisions in the best interests of their own.
B. Ask their children to pay more visits to them.
C. Sacrifice for their struggling children.
D. Get to know themselves better.
I was sleeping in my room when my bed started shaking and a loud noise was heard. I woke up and my mom was screaming my name. Next moment I was running along with my younger sister, mom and dad. Before I ran out of the door, I realized my elder sister hadn’t come out yet. So I screamed her name at the top of my voice. My mom said she had gone to her class. Then the four of us, along with many others, were running on the staircase. We lived on the seventh floor, so I thought we would not be able to make it and the building would fall before we managed to reach even the fourth floor. My dad’s head was injured by something falling down. I did try to put my hand over his head. When we reached the sixth floor, the building split into two. We had no way to get down.
The next thing I remember is silence. There were around 30 people on the staircase and none could react. Five minutes later, someone opened the door of the sixth-floor flat. We all went in. We were wondering how would get down. From the balcony of the sixth-floor flat, I saw people standing on the ground floor. All eyes were stuck on us. I could see my elder sister crying.
Our first hope of surviving came when a worker climbed a rope to where we were. That was the first time we thought maybe we could get down. Half an hour passed and we were still trapped. Finally RSS people arrived with ropes. They got people down one by one. My biggest worry was how my dad would get down. Finally after two and a half hours, we all got down.
That day we saw the power of nature. It has taken more than two years to build the flats and it took just one and a half minutes to destroy the structure.

Parents have widely different views on the problem of pocket money. Four new fathers were asked this question and this is how they answered.
Ashish Khanna: Although many argue that pocket money helps develop children’s sense of value, I don’t agree. I wouldn’t give my child any pocket money. First of all, I never got pocket money and I seem to have a good value for money. If my child ever needed something and I felt it was a reasonable (合理的) request, I would buy it for him.
Sharad Sanghi: No, I wouldn’t give my child pocket money because I don’t want to create the perception (观念) of “her” money and “my” money. Besides, if I refuse to buy her something that I think is bad for her, she may buy it with her pocket money on the sly. In this way, I would lose control over my child’s requests. I feel it also encourages children to care more about money than anything else. I don’t want my child to start judging other children by the amount of money or pocket money they have.
Rakesh Shah: Yes, I would give my child pocket money because I feel that children should learn to spend money properly. I will give him a fixed amount every month and if he spends the money before the month is over, he will learn a lesson and not spend money so freely. He will learn what his limitations (限制) are and feel the difficulty when he has to pay for something that is over his own pocket.
Rajiv Patel: Yes, I would give my child pocket money because it is important that he learns to manage money. But I would not give it to him on a weekly or monthly basis. He would have to earn it. If he helped me finish some of my jobs or helped his mother with housework, I would reward him. This helps him realize that “money does not grow on trees” and it requires hard work to earn money.
24. Ashish Khanna may agree that _____.
A. he was given too much pocket money when young
B. he can take much control of his child by money
C. he will buy anything he thinks his child really needs
D. pocket money helps children develop a good value for money
25. The underlined phrase “on the sly” in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to “_____”.
A. for free B. at a lower price
C. happily D. secretly
26. Who would give his child pocket money every month?
A. Ashish Khanna. B. Sharad Sanghi.
C. Rakesh Shah. D. Rajiv Patel.
27. What do Rakesh Shah and Rajiv Patel have in common?
A. They want their children to learn to manage money from an early age.
B. They ask their children to get pocket money by working.
C. They teach their children the difficulty of making money.
D. They allow their children to spend money freely.

Almost all theme park accidents can be prevented. Here, based on coverage of theme park safety, are some tips to help you and your family stay safe on your next visit.
If you are visiting with a child, take a moment to explain the ride to them, and tell them what they should do.They are depending upon you to keep them safe.Set a good example for them by following the rules of the park, and make sure that they know you expect them to follow those rules, too.
Tell them to stay seated, to hold the grab bar or put their hands in the laps, and not to stick their knees and feet outside a ride vehicle.Make them look to you for the okay to get on or off a ride, too.And never put a crying child on a ride.If your child starts to cry, let others pass you in line until your child is calmed.Or, gently exit the queue and find something more relaxing to do.
Young kids can’t keep an adult’s pace in a theme park.Let them take plenty of breaks.
“Kids get tired,” said TPI reader Matt Johnson, a father of four.“Tired kids make parents even more tired. And tired kids and parents may get hurt — physically and emotionally.” He advises that parents plan a mid-day break, perhaps a swim back at the hotel, to avoid mid-day heat and crowds.“You will see cranky families having a miserable time while you are refreshed and having a great evening.”

Dear Judy,
I am writing to tell you about my trip last weekend. My family and I went to the Summer Palace for a holiday.
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 56 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread.57
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 58 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
59 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 60 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.
B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
C. Everyone was new to the network once.
D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.
E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.
There is a sharing policy at my son's preschool. The policy is that a child can keep a toy as long as they want to.If another child wants the toy, they have to 36 until the first child is done with it.We are 37 “save” toys for the child if they have to go to the bathroom, or go to the snack table, etc.so that it won't be 38 before they are done. This applies to anything in the school that can be 39 , including swings(秋千) and monkey bars.
That is the 40 that all the kids know, so they don't feel uncomfortable when you tell them, “You can have it was Sally Joe is done.” But 41 I've been noticing a totally different attitude towards 42 in other places where I go.Gradually(逐渐地), I'm starting to 43 why the rule of the school is important. Here is a(n) 44 of sharing practices that I've seen lately. My good friend and her 45 were at the park one day.He had 46 a small car from home to play with.Another child, a lot bit 47 , wanted to play with the car and was demanding that my friend's son 48 him the car.A typical little boy fighting started.I stopped them 49 .I heard the other mother told her son angrily, “I guess his mom didn't 50 him how to share”, which I don't think so.
I think that it is 51 to teach a child that he should have something that someone else has, simply because he wants it. 52 it belongs to someone else, not yours. If you want to share his, “No” is a perfectly 53 response, unless he's ready to share with you or you 54 it with something.Even if it is something public, when another is playing it, you should wait for your 55 politely. Therefore, how to share and how to treat it are important.
