When we talk about a wolf, we tend to describe it as a kind of fierce creature. But is it really true that the wolf stands for devil and ugliness?

Have you read the book “The Wolf Totem” (《狼图腾》) by a famous writer Jiang Rong, which tells the story of the relationship between wolves and human beings? Have you ever   21   the wolves' world? I was shocked by this kind of   38   wolves which are one of the most respected creature on the  earth. I want everyone to look at wolves in a   39   way. They are our teachers. They show us how to survive and   40   this not simple but dangerous world. Please honor the wolves, please honor all these heroes of nature!

It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of clear similarities in the way different animals show the same feeling. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because such behavior patterns are inherited (遗传) rather than learned.

Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the sameway all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like “he went pale and begin to tremble (颤抖)”suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide” is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas(然而;但是) in English it means surprise. In Chinese surprise can be described in a phrase like “they stretched out their tongues”! Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting(侮辱)or expresses disgust.

Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people’s faces. Disgust, contempt (蔑视) and suffering seem to be the most difficult emotions for people everywhere either to recognize or to express. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do. And psychologists such as E.G. Beier have also shown that some people often give the completely impression of how they feel. For example, they try to show love but in fact communicate dislike. Or when they want to show interest, they give the impression that they don’t care. This can happen even among close friends and members of the same family. In other words, what we think we are communicating through language, voice, face and body movements may be the exact opposite of what other people understand.

28Experiments show that easier understanding of words and gestures has something to do with your__________ .

Aage and sex                            Blove and cultural differences

Cimpressions about the speaker     Demotional state

29When we communicate with people,  ___________.

Awe know exactly what they mean while they express their emotions

Bwe sometimes misunderstand each other

Cwe usually mislead them by expressing the opposite of our feeling

Dit seems much more difficult to understand body language than language

30The underlined word “disgust” in Paragraph 2 probably means _______.

Astrong dislike    Bfriendliness       Clove      Dsickness

There are many older people in the world and there will be many more. A littleknown fact is that over 60 percent of the older people live in developing countries. According to the World Health Organizationby 2020 there will be 1 billionwith over 700 million living in developing countries.

It is a surprising fact that the population ageing is particularly rapid in developing countries. For exampleit took France 115 years for the proportion of older people to double from 7 percent to 14 percent. It is estimated(估计) to take China a mere 27 years to achieve this same increase.

What are the implications(暗指) of these increased numbers of older folkOne of the biggest worries for governments is that the longer people livethe more likelihood there is for diseases and for disability. Attention is being paid to the need to keep people as healthy as possibleincluding during old ageto lessen the financial burden on the state.

Another significant problem is the need for the younger generations to understand and value the older people in their society. In some African countriescertainly in Asiaolder people are respected and regarded as the ones with special knowledge. Yet traditions are fading away dailywhich does not ensure the continued high regard of older people. As society changes, attitudes will change.

Much needs to be done to get rid of age discrimination (歧视) in employment. Lifelong learning programs need to be provided to enable older people to be active members in a country’s development.

Social security policies need to be established to provide adequate income protection for older people. Both public and private schemes are vital in order to build a suitable safety net.

To achieve equality in such matters will take considerable time and effort. One thing is surethere is no time to be lost.

7The proportion(比例)of older people________.

A.is bigger in developed countries than in developing countries

B.is one seventh of the population in developing countries

C.will increase much faster in China than in France

D.will be sixty percent in developing countries by 2020

8According to the passagewhich of the following are governments most worried about?

A.The diseases and disability of older people.

B.The longer life and good health of people.

C.The loss of taxes on older people.

D.The increasing respect for older people.

9Which of the following measures is NOT mentioned to solve the population ageing problem?

A.Getting rid of age discrimination in employment.

B.Ensuring adequate income protection for older people.

C.Providing free health care for sick older people.

D.Supplying lifelong learning programs to older people.

10The author concludes in the last paragraph that________.

A.governments have spent lots of time in solving the ageing problem

B.population ageing is a hard problembut it needs to be solved urgently

C.people are too busy to solve the population ageing problem

D.much time and effort will be lost in solving the ageing problem

Rosemary sat at her kitchen table, working a crossword puzzle. Crosswords were nice; they filled the time, and kept the mind active. She needed just one word to complete this morning’s puzzle; the clue was “a Swiss river,” and the first of its three letters was “A”. Unfortunately, Rosemary had no idea what the name of river was, and could not look it up. Her atlas was on her desk, and the desk was in the guest room, currently being occupied by her grandson Victor.

Looking up over the tops of her glasses, Rosemary glanced at the kitchen clock: it was almost 10 a.m. Land sakes! Did the boy intend to sleep all day? She noticed the pain in her wrist again, and put down her pen. Anyhow, at 87 years of age, she was glad she could still write at all. She had decided long ago that growing old was like slowly turning to stone; you couldn’t take anything for granted. She stood up slowly, painfully, and started walking to the guest room.

The trip, though only a distance of about 25 feet, seemed to take a long while. Rosemary arrived at the door to the guest room. It stood slightly open, and she looked through the opening. Victor lay sleeping on his side, his arms bent, his expression slightly pained. Get up, lazy bones, she wanted to say. Even in childhood, Rosemary had never slept past 4 a.m.; there were too many chores to do. How different things were for Victor’s generation! Her youngest grandson behaved as if he had never done a chore in his life. Twenty-one years old, he had driven down to Florida to visit Rosemary in his shiny new car, a gift from his dear parents. Victor would finish college soon, and his future appeared bright — if he ever got out of bed, that is.

Something Victor had said last night over dinner had disturbed her. Now what was it? Oh yes; he had been talking about one of his college courses —a “gut”he had called it. When she had asked him to explain the word, Victor had said it was a course that you took simply because it was easy to pass. Rosemary, who had not even had a high school education, found the word unpleasant. If she had been allowed to continue her studies, she would never have taken a “gut” ...

The memory flooded back then, still painful as an open wound all these years later. It was the first day of high school. She had graduated from grammar school the previous year, but her father had forbidden her to go to high school that autumn, saying she was needed on the farm. After much tearful begging, she had gotten him to promise that next year, she could start high school. She had endured a whole year of chores instead of books, with animals and rough farmhands for company instead of people of her own age. Now, at last, the glorious day was at hand. She had put on her best dress (she owned two), her heart racing hopefully.

But her father was waiting for her as she came downstairs.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked.

“To high school, Papa.”

“No you’re not. Take that thing off and get back to work. ”

“But Papa, you promised!”

“Do as I say!” he thundered.

There was no arguing with Papa when he spoke that way. Tearfully, she had to drag herself upstairs to change clothes. Rosemary still wondered what her life would have been like if her father had not been waiting at the bottom of the stairs that day, or if somehow she had found the strength to disobey him...

Suddenly, Victor moved slightly, without waking, and whispered something unintelligible. Waken from her daydreaming, Rosemary stared at Victor. She wondered if he were having a nightmare.

62. By saying “if he ever got out of bed” (Para. 3) Rosemary thought Victor was______.

A. too tired to get up                                                B. promising(有前途的) but lazy

C. impolite to oversleep                                     D. old enough to help with chores

63. Why did Rosemary dislike Victor’s use of the word “gut”?

A. Because it showed that Victor didn’t take education seriously.

B. Because it reminded Rosemary of her grammar school classes.

C. Because it indicated that college courses were too easy to pass.

D. Because it implied that Rosemary was lacking in high school education.

64. Rosemary’s memory of the day when she finally prepared to start high school indicates that______

A. she had already decided to take up a job

B. she had hesitated over her choice of clothes

C. she had done especially well in grammar school

In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, that they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world.

The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.

“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”

“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.”

His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.

8. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?

  A. They seldom follow the French law.          B. They often ignore the Guianese law.

C. They are separated from the modern world.    D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.

9. Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guianese as _________.

A. a tour guide    B. a geographer    C. a film director    D. a photographer

10. What is Gin’s attitude towards the lives of the indigenous Guianese?

A. Cautious.      B. Doubtful.   C. Uninterested.    D. Appreciative.

11. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. The modern French lifestyle.    B. The self-supporting hunting.

C. The uncivilized hunting.        D. The French Republic.

An African proverb says that a single hand cannot tie a bundle. Everyone needs companions to help them sail through the rough seas of life. Even the strongest and richest person still needs friends. Our money and strength would have no value if we had no friends to share with us. The best friendship is a give-and-take relationship. We need the support of our family, friends and the community. In turn we also give support to the society, our friends and our family.

The word friend has many meanings. It could be the bus driver who takes you to and from work every day. It could be a parent, a colleague, a wife or husband, a brother or sister, or even the unknown person who helped you just once when you could not find your way. Real friends share not only our happiness but our sorrows as well. This may explain why we have the expression "a friend in need is a friend indeed".

Friendship is like the sunshine that keeps us warm. It is like the refreshing raindrops on the fields that give the farmers hope of a good planting season. Without friends our life would be like a desert where our only friend would be loneliness and sadness. The most fortunate person is the one who has friends from all levels in the society. A driver might find friends not only among his colleagues but among farmers, bankers, traders, students, politicians or teachers. We should never forget our old friends when we make new ones. We should treasure each of our friends whether poor or rich, beautiful or not. Each friend is unique in his or her own way. And all together, they enrich life and make it very colorful.

Christmas was two days away. Had the packages with a camera in already been placed under the Christmas tree? That was the only thing that I had longed for. A million times I had kept dropping hints to my parents. Taking photos is my favorite. My bedroom walls are covered with photos I had taken with my mom’s old camera. I’m always trying to snap(抓拍) those wonderful moments in which you can hear the laughter or touch the beautiful scene, but my camera has always seemed to fall short.

I knew Mom had put a few presents under the tree this morning, so I went on a hunt in my mom’s room. I opened the door and found my Christmas present was lying unwrapped on the floor --- a big pink cat. My heart sank.

Mom seemed to notice that, and she tried to cheer me up. “Jenny, I got your present today. I am so excited to surprise you!” “I can’t wait,” I said.

The next day I couldn’t wait any longer. I needed to tell her.

“Mom, may I talk to you for a moment?”

“Sure, dear. What do you need to talk about?” she asked.

And so it came ---how upset I was that I was getting a cat!

“Jenny, that cat is for your sister Julia!” she said with a smile.

“Then what am I getting” I asked.

She just smiled. “You’ll have to wait and see.”

Next morning, I happily got into the living room and sat next to the tree. I pulled out the box with my name on it and opened the wrapping paper to find …

My camera! “Thank you!” I said to both Dad and Mom.

Dad picked up the camera and took a picture of Julia, Mom and me. It has become one of my favorite pictures. Just on that Christmas morning, I took lots of photos with my camera --- my little sister making a face, my parents giving me a soft smile --- and all of these photos have come to mean one thing to me: love.
