Do you remember the man who contributed a lot to the understanding of British and American English? Noah Webster, born on October 16, 1758, is known for The American Dictionary of the English Language. He has been called the “Father of American Scholarship and Education”. His “Blue-Backed Speller” books were used to teach spelling and reading to five generations of American children. But how much do you know about him beyond that?
At the age of 16, Noah Webster began attending Yale College. Unfortunately, he spent his four years at Yale during the American Revolutionary War, and, because of food shortages, many of his college classes were held in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Later, he served in the army.
Having graduated from Yale in 1778, Webster wanted to continue his education in order to earn his law degree. He had to teach school in order to pay for his education. He set up many small schools that didn't survive, but he was a good teacher because instead of forcing his students to learn, like most teachers did, he rewarded them.
He earned his law degree in 1781, but did not practice law until 1789. Once he started he found the law was not to his liking. Webster did not have much money.
In 1793, Alexander Hamilton lent him $1500 to move to New York City to edit a newspaper. In December, he founded New York 's first daily newspaper, American Minerva, and edited it for four years. For decades, he published textbooks, political essays, a report on some diseases, and newspaper articles for his party, He wrote so much that a modern list of his published works required 655 pages .
Noah Webster died on May 28, 1843 and was buried in the Grove Street Cemetery.

Next fall when you see geese heading south for the winter or flying in “ V” formation(队形),you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way.
As each bird spreads its wings,it creates an uplift (上升力)for the bird immediately following. By flying in " V" formation the whole flock(鸟群)adds at least 71% greater, flying range, than if each bird flies on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can gel where they are going more quickly and easily because they are (raveling on the thrust (推动力)of one.another .
When a goose falls out of the formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying lo go it alone and quickly gels back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are. When the head goose gets tired, it flies backwards and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether St is with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk (雁叫) from behind lo encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What do we say when we honk from behind?
Finally and this is important, when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshots, and falls out of formation , two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection . They slay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own,or with another formation to catch up with their group. If we have the sense of a goose,we will stand by each other like that.

When traveling around the world, I came across a beautiful town called Trancoso in Brazil. The people in the town were friendly and warm. What I 41 liked was that everyone gives the 42 acknowledgement(打招呼)when seeing each other 43 a wave or a stare. So as I was walking down the streets, people gave me the thumbs up. This 44 my day.

Yasuda is 95 years old. Looking for easier ways to search the Web and send email, he bought Apple’s iPad. The company has sold 3.27 million iPads since they entered the market in April. Although it’s impossible to know with certainty how many seniors (老年人) are buying them, evidence suggests that it’s a hit with seniors.
The iPad’s intuitive interface (直观界面) makes it attractive to seniors around the world, says Takahiro Miura, a researcher at the University of Tokyo. “The iPad is a good tool for seniors because it’s very easy to use,” he says. “Unlike the PC, it doesn’t require former knowledge.”
James Cordwell, a researcher in London, says the iPad’s popularity with seniors is helping Apple reach beyond its traditional base of young customers. “The world’s population, especially in developed markets, is getting older. It’s probably a market where Apple has least entered,” Cordwell says. Senior users are “a key source of growth for them in the future.”
Seniors make up about 22 percent of the population in Japan. They may prove that seniors are willing to accept the iPad. Besides the customer group under 30, they spend more than any other group in the country, according to a report. Motoo Kitamura, 78, a former gas salesman, bought an iPad to help him communicate with his 2-year-old grandson and prevent him from experiencing some of the mental problems that sometimes come with getting older. “Trying new things like that is good mental exercise,” he says.

In the past twenty years, riding bicycles has become more and more popular among people of all ages. 3 Bicycles have long played an important part in the liyes of American young people. But today an even greater number of adults cycle along roadsides and bicycle paths. These new riders are often trying to become fit or lose weight. They have found that bicycling is a pleasant way to stay healthy.
This is certainly good for health. But it has also brought some problems. With all these added people on the road, bicycle safety has become a matter of real importance.
Bicycle safety is mostly a matter of common sense. People should ride only on bicycle paths where they will not be badly hurt. There are also a number of rules that riders should follow, especially when riding on streets or highways. Bicyclists should never ride against the traffic, nor should they carry other people on their bicycles. They are also supposed to ride in single line on busy streets and to "walk bicycles across the busy intersections (交叉路口) .4.By following these rules, bicycle riders will not only stay healthy but also be safe.
In one recent year, the National Safety Council reported that 34 thousand bicycle riders were hurt in highway accidents. In that same year, another six hundred riders were killed. Since the introduction of crash helmets (头盔) in 1980, the number of injuries (伤者) and deaths from bicycling accidents had gone down. Today, more and more riders realize the dangers of bicycling. They are wearing helmets and paying closer attention to cycling rules.

The Swedish Academy’s mid-October announcement regarding literature seldom fails to cause second-guessing.
Bob Dylan was awarded the big prize this morning, and my social media has been alive with indignation ever since. The Nobel did not go to those excellent novelists but to a songwriter. Some of those same people are still protesting that last year it was warded to Svetlana Alexievich, a “journalist”. They have decided, for whatever reasons, that song lyrics(歌词) are not literature.
And people are upset because Bob Dylan is the voice of some generation other than theirs, because he works in a popular style, because he does not work in this minute’s popular style, because he appeared on a car commercial that aired during the Super Bowl, because his songwriting skills dropped off — he was famous long ago, after all.
You may not think of Dylan as a poet, but Dylan created a climate in which lyrics were taken seriously. And Dylan accomplished something that few novelists or poets or for that matter songwriters have managed to do in our time: he changed the time he lived. Through words, with music, he affected the opinions and ambitions of hundreds of millions of people all over the world. The Nobel Prize in Literature cannot ever be all things to all people, and while this year’s award failed to accomplish various possible objectives, it was not in any way misapplied.
9. What does the underlined word “indignation” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Curiosity. B. Happiness.
C. Excitement. D. Anger.
10. Why are people upset about Dylan’s being awarded?
A. He failed to represent any generation.
B. He didn’t have good songwriting skills.
C. He played badly in the Super Bowl.

11. Paragraph 4 mainly focuses on Dylan’s _________.
A. style B. influence
C. efforts D. ambitions
12. Which can serve as the title of the passage?
A. No dish suits all tastes
B. Great minds think alike
C. Misfortune may be actual blessing

Li Ming is a friend of mine. I’m glad he changed greatly in the past two years. I clearly remember he was quite fat two years before. He got tired so easy that he couldn’t take exercise regularly, that made him very upset. Later, he realized unless he went on like that, he would end up achieve nothing. So, he made up his mind to make a change. He went running every morning and played the basketball every afternoon. Besides, he followed a diet of more vegetables or less meat. Gradually he began to lose weight. He is now an energetic boy in good healthy. So when faced with problems, we should overcome it with great determination and strong willpower.
