Four ways to be a great roommate
Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in a boarding school or, easily, one of the worst. 71 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.
Talk things out.
Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 72
Don't expect to be best friends.
Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 73 And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.
Ask before you take.
This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 74
Clean up after yourself.
This should go without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in a boarding school are messy. 75 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A. So you need to think twice before you help your roommate out.
B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.
C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D. You don't have to clean your room and keep it organized all the time.
E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F. Sometimes you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative (消极的) energy.
G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to frighten your roommate away.
You shouldn’t ______ your hope. Everything will be better.
A. give up B. fix up C. cheer up D. put up

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses (感觉) how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track(跟踪) your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless (无线的) connection.
The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications (设备)on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart and fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He deci
ded he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, and the U.S. is the first target market. ( 目标市场)

Car washes are a common sight throughout Nigeria, but Madinat Aliyu’s roadside business is special: she is the only woman car-washer in the north of the country.
“This job has caused me a lot of problems.” said the 27-year-old, checking cars waiting to be cleaned.
Aliyu began her work two years ago, hoping to use the 7,000 naira(about £28) she earned every month to put her younger sisters and brothers through school following the death of their mother, the only one who made money to support the family. But her family begged her to stop doing this job, and she has received “judgment and warnings” from strangers too.
“My grandmother cried for many days. Some people thought it was a joke to bring more customers. Others said if I was doing it for money, they would just give me money to stop bringing them shame,” she said to me, as she got water from a well by the roadside. “But I hate laziness and depending on somebody else.”
Little by little, Aliyu got admirers. “Some customers only allow her to wash their cars,” said her colleague Shamsudeen Mohammed. “I trained many green hands to wash cars, and I can honestly tell you Aliyu’ s work is better than any man’s.” he added.
Recently some women came to Aliyu to ask for advice on starting their own business. “Unfortunately a woman’s family discouraged her. I told her, if you listen to them, you will find yourself living a life you don’t want,” she said.
