Beijing has started a battle to get rid of “Chinglish” (Chinese English). The “Language mandarins” of Beijing have decided that Chinglish is a disease for China’s modernizing claim and must be obliterated before the city hosts the Winter Olympic Games in 2022.

A road sign on the Avenue of Eternal Peace Chang’an Street, for example, advised: “To Take Notice of Safe; The Slippery are Very Crafty,” a warning that the sidewalk was slippery. Another sign in a Beijing park reads: “Little grass is smiling slightly, please walk on sidewalk “.

Li Honghai, the city official in charge of the battle, said, “Linguistic perfection (语言美) is becoming increasingly important with the rise in the number  of  the foreigners  flowing into the city .”

However, not everyone shares the disdain (蔑视)of the Beijing government for the mixed language. “The choice of words is pretty much. One can either choose the verbs, adverbs, nouns or whatever one likes,” explained one Hong Kong linguist on an Internet website.

So many examples exist that several Internet sites have been set up to collect Chinglish phrases. Many come from English instructions on packages such as a candle marked with “Keep this candle out of children” and a model boat -- curiously named Posh Sailboat -- which means “Please don’t place it in dusty play.”

If the battle against Chinglish is successful, Chinese will also turn their attention to the English-language versions of newspapers, which play an even more important role in teaching right English.

In James Cameron’s fantasy films, such as Avatar and The Abyss, the unexplored is decorated in color and filled with alien danger. But on his dive to the deepest place on Earth, which took place on a Sunday last month, reality proved far different: white, deserted, and dull.

“I felt like I literally had gone to another planet and come back,” Cameron said after returning from the cold, dark place in the western Pacific Ocean, nearly 7 miles (11km) below the surface. “It was a very fantastic day.” Cameron is the first person to explore the deepest valley in the ocean since two men made a 20-minute trip there in 1960.

He spent about three hours gliding (滑行) through the icy darkness, brightened only by lights on the one-man sub (潜水艇). This deepest section of the Mariana Trench is so untouched that at first it appeared dull. But there’s something strangely interesting about the first pieces of video that Cameron shot — a sense of aloneness.

“It’s really the sense of isolation (孤立,隔离), realizing how tiny you are down in this big, black and unexplored place,” the Titanic director said. The wordless minute-long video, released by sponsor National Geographic, shows Cameron’s sub gliding across what he calls “the very soft, almost gelatinous (胶状的) flat plain.”

To Cameron, the main thing was to appreciate being there. “There had to be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in, and said, ‘This is where I am; I’m at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth. What does that mean?’” Cameron told reporters during a conference call. The trip was only about half as long as planned because Cameron’s battery ran low. He said he would return and film it in 3D for later viewing.

“I see this as the beginning,” Cameron said. “It’s not a one-time deal and then moving on. This is the beginning of opening up this new frontier.”

29. Why did Cameron dive to the deepest place on Earth?

A. To study ocean creatures in the deepest valley.

B. Cameron glided through the icy darkness alone by lights of the one-man sub.

C. Cameron didn’t stay at the bottom of the ocean as planned because he was worn out.

D. Cameron felt bored when he went to the deepest valley in the ocean.

What do you do in a situation like this? You’re eating dinner with friends in a nice restaurant. You’re having a great time when a phone rings at the table next to you. A man takes out his phone and starts talking loudly about problems he’s having with his girlfriend. He talks for almost ten minutes!  36

Many people find cell phones useful in their day-to-day lives. But we’ve all sat next to someone talking too loudly on a cell phone. You may want to tell the loudmouth to end the conversation, but let the management take care of noisy customers.  37  Here are a few rules:

       • Off means off!  38  If a sign says “turn off cell phones”, don’t use your phone.

       •  39  Speak softly and for a short time. Try to move away from other people.

• Lights off, phone off! Never take calls in a theater or at the movies.

40  Talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. And watch where you’re going when you’re walking down the street and talking on the phone.

As more people use cell phones, things are only going to get worse. So, the next time you’re getting ready to make a call, stop and consider the people around you.

A. Pay attention!

B. Try to make yourself understood!

C. Keep private conversations private!

D. You can only control your own behavior.

E. Always make yourself available to your phone.

F. Follow the rules of restaurants and other public places.

G. This happens all the time — on buses, in restaurants, everywhere!

'Off we go!'cried Mr Wonka.'Hurry up,everybody!Follow me to the next room! And please don't worry about Augustus Gloop. He's bound to come out in the wash. They always do.We shall have to make the next part of the journey by boat! Here she comes!Look!'

A steamy mist was rising up now from the great warm chocolate river, and out of the mist there appeared suddenly a most fantastic pink boat.It was a large open row boat with a tall front and a tall back (like a Viking boat of old),and it was of such a shining sparkling glistening pink colour that the whole thing looked as though it were made of bright, pink glass. There were many oars(桨)on either side of it,and as the boat came closer, the watchers on the riverbank could see that the oars were being pulled by masses of Oompa-Loompas—at least ten of them to each oar.

'This is my private yacht!'cried Mr Wonka, beaming with pleasure.'I made her by hollowing out an enormous boiled sweet!Isn't she beautiful!See how she comes cutting through the river!'The gleaming pink boiled-sweet boat glided up to the riverbank. One hundred Oompa-Loompas rested on their oars and stared up at the visitors. Then suddenly, for some reason best known to themselves, they all burst into shrieks of laughter.

'What's so funny?'asked Violet Beauregarde,a girl who was chewing gum.

'Oh,don't worry about them!'cried Mr Wonka.'They're always laughing!They think everything's a colossal joke! Jump into the boat,all of you!Come on!Hurry up!'

As soon as everyone was safely in,the Oompa-Loompas pushed the boat away from the bank and began to row swiftly downriver.

'Hey,there!Mike Teavee!'shouted Mr Wonka.'Please do not lick the boat with your tongue! It'll only make it sticky!'

'Daddy,'said Veruca Salt,'I want a boat like this!I want you to buy me a big pink boiled-sweet boat exactly like Mr Wonka's!And I want lots of Oompa-Loompas to row me about, and I want a chocolate river and I want...I want...'

'Isn't it marvellous?'said Grandpa Joe,grinning at Charlie.Charlie nodded and smiled up at the old man.

Suddenly,Mr Wonka, who was sitting on Charlie's other side, reached down into the bottom of the boat, picked up a large mug, dipped it into the river, filled it with chocolate, and handed it to Charlie.'Drink this,'he said.'It'll do you good! You look starved to death!'Then Mr Wonka filled a second mug and gave it to Grandpa Joe.'You,too,'he said. 'You look like a skeleton! What's the matter?Hasn't there been anything to eat in your house recently?'

'Not much,' said Grandpa Joe.

Charlie put the mug to his lips, and as the rich warm creamy chocolate ran down his throat into his empty tummy, his whole body from head to toe began to tingle with pleasure, and a feeling of intense happiness spread over him.

It seems school children all over the world complain about their school food. Cherie Blair, the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, said that she would prepare a packed lunch for her son if school dinners do not improve. So what do students of your age eat for lunch at school?

Japan

High schools have canteens(餐厅), which serve everything from noodles to rice, but not burgers and chips. Other children bring food from home such as cold rice balls, meat or fish, pickles(泡菜) and vegetables.

Students take home a menu for the coming month containing notes on nutrition value. Twice a year parents are invited to have a taste of the food. The class with the fewest leftovers(剩饭) at the end of the month receives a prize.

United States

A typical menu from a US school is made up of a hamburger with fried potatoes or roast chicken, lettuce and pickles, fruit and cookies. School lunches must also provide at least one-third of the daily dietary allowances(定量) of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories.

Australia

Meat pies, sausage rolls and hot dogs are all traditional dishes in Australian school shops. But as the nation pays more attention to children’s health, healthier foods have started to find their way onto school menus.

Many schools have used a traffic light system. The sale of red-labelled(标签) foods, including pastries, chocolate and soft drinks, is served only twice a week. Healthier green-labelled foods such as sushi, sandwiches, corn and watermelon, however, are available every day.

In some schools, students have a choice of up to 89 foods to choose from, including popcorn and rice.

South Africa

Most of South Africa’s schools do not serve meals at all. Classes end at 1:30 p.m. and students get their own lunches. Many students bring food from home, usually sandwiches.

Fast food and fried food sell the best among students, which has led to a rise in obesity among children. But as more people began to realize the fact that being too fat may cause different diseases, some schools in towns have led the way towards better nutrition(营养). Now students at these schools are provided with lunches of porridge() with vegetables, such as cabbages, onions, beans, carrots and tomatoes.
