How to Develop Courage by Overcoming Daily Fears

Sometimes when thinking of courage, we think it only applies to rare and uncommon situations. Yet our ordinary lives can also be full of courage, even if we are not facing the end of a gun, a wild animal or a dangerous criminal. Courage doesn't just mean doing heroic acts.31.        In fact, where there is fear on a daily basis, there are opportunities for you to show your courage. Here are some suggestions to develop courage by overcoming daily fears.

  ● Recognizing your fears.

By realizing that you're fearful, you are more likely to get to the bottom of what your fear is. 32.        You might come to understand that you're afraid of failing or taking chances. You may be fearful simply because you don't have confidence in yourself. The key is not to dwell on your fear, but rather to understand what it is what you're worried about.

  ● Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen.

If you hesitate to take action, ask yourself this: What's the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then go on to improve on the worst. Is failure the worst thing that can happen? No, absolutely not. 33.        Doing nothing is actually the worst thing that can happen. When you take no action, you are assured of getting nowhere.

  ● Take action.

Courage comes from taking action. 34.        You need to act to overcome your fear. Your action may put you into discomfort, but you have to just do it. And your action can prevent you from being stuck.

 ● 35.

To build up your confidence, you need to do the same thing over and over again. Soon you will discover that less courage is needed because you have already gained mastery. You are able to move decisively forward.

   A. Share your fears with others.

   B. Practice, practice and practice.

   C. So you are already in a comfort zone.

   D. You cannot think courage comes just in one day.

   E. Each undesired result is just one more step towards your goal.

   F. Finding out what is truly holding you back.

   G. You needn't wait for an emergency to occur to develop courage.

Ben, a 19-year-old teenager, was very fond of playing the violin and pretty good at it as well. Interestingly, he had a few houseplants in his room balcony (阳台) where he used to play his violin and he used to water them regularly. After a while he noticed that those plants had grown better than the other plants in the house, even though the regular watering was same for all. He wondered about it and came up with a hypothesis (假设), that it might actually be the violin music.

Well, his inference (推论) may not be incorrect, as there have been experiments which find that music does affect plant growth. Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, an Indian scientist, performed some experiments which show how music affects plant growth.

1. Plants do like noise. They grow more quickly, grow taller and weigh more than those kept in silence. Therefore, there’s a good chance that plants like any sound you might play for them, including music.

2. Plants also like good, attentive care. If you are playing music you like for a plant, it may lead you to take better care of it. You will be more likely to carefully water and feed the plant and make sure it has good light. It might look like the music helps the plant grow, when you are actually taking better care of it.

3. Plants like carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). If you are standing by a plant, singing or playing music for it, it is going to absorb (吸收) some carbon dioxide from your breath. This could help it grow more quickly.

35. In Paragraph 1, the writer tells the story of Ben to ______.

     A. tell an interesting story               B. show an unusual inference

     C. prove a scientific discovery        D. introduce an interesting topic

36. The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to “______”.

     A. why the houseplants in the room balcony grew better

     B. the fact that the houseplants in the room balcony grew better

     C. why the violin music helped the houseplants grow better

     D. if the houseplants in the room balcony were watered more

37. What was the purpose of Bose’s experiments?

     A. To test a new theory on plant growth.

     B. To show music does affect plant growth.

     C. To prove that Ben’s inference was correct.

     D. To find how plant growth is influenced by music.

38. According to Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, plants ______.

     A. grow very slowly in quiet conditions

     B. grow better in noisy environment

     C. prefer higher noise levels

D. like light music best

When milk arrived on the doorstep

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering(递送) milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer(硬币夹) fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-"Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery"-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically(魔术般)appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed(存在) a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milkthus making it difficult for milkmen to compete (竞争). Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practiced to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

29. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ______.

A. to show his magical power

B. to pay for the delivery

C. to please his mother

D. to satisfy his curiosity(好奇心)

30. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.

B. Its service is getting poor.

C. It has been driven out of the market.

D. It is forbidden(禁止) by law.

31. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A. He needed it for his milk bottles.

B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.

C. He missed the good old days.

D. He planted flowers in it.

If Kate goes to the gym this weekend, ________

Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables.

36   Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.

Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle.  37  Ideal(理想的) study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.

Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive(被动的) activity.   38 .

You' ll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you' ve set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing.

39  Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.

40  This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make studying enjoyable.

A. Pick a place where your children can study properly.

B. Hold them to the schedule they create for themselves.

C. Finally, spend time with your kids when they're studying.

D. Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement, too.

E. Instead, use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed.

F. Try to stop this bad habit by offering some sort of reward.

G. One of the best ways to form good study habits for your kids is to design a schedule that they keep to your host country.

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way.

Our expression today is “to face the music”. When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to face the music,” it does not mean he’s planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didn’t do this or that. Awful music indeed, but it has to be faced. At sometime or another, every one of us has to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry voice, “I want to talk to you.” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Looper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting to go on the stage. When they got their cue(提示) to go on, they often said, “Well, it’s time to face the music.” And that was exactly what they did—facing the orchestra(管弦乐队) which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music” came to mean “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.”

Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced an inspection(视察) by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean, shiny enough to pass the inspection? Still the men had to go out and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Another army explanation is more closely linked to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. For example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.
