Tom was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, so he had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to get to the university, but it was so expensive to study there that during the holiday he found it necessary to get two jobs at the same time so as to make enough money to pay for his studies.

One summer he managed to get a job in a butcher’s shop(肉店)during the day-time, and another in a hospital at night. In the shop, he learnt to cut meat quite nicely, so the butcher often left him to do all the serving while he went to the back room to do the accounts(账目). In the hospital, on the other hand, he was, of course, allowed to do the simplest jobs, like helping to lift people and to carry them from one part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital, Tom had to wear white clothes.

One evening at the hospital, Tom had to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he came to get her, but when she saw Tom, that finished her.

“No! No!” she cried“Not my butcher! I won’t be operated on by my butcher!” and fainted away(昏厥).

That cold January night,I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away,I was still learning my lines.I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time.As I walked,I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco.City life had become too much for me.

As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings,I felt very small and cold.I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers.Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.

About a block from my apartment,I heard a sound behind me.I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun.The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight.Still, the noise had made me nervous,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been.It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.

Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore.I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise.Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes,my wallet was nowhere to be found.

Just as I was about to give up the search,I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me.When a voice called from the inside,"Alisa Camacho"I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye."Is this what you’re looking for" he asked, holding up a small square shape.

It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed.I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back.I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life.I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

How to manage your time

For many high school students it seems that there is never enough time. There are several steps you can take to organize your time better.

First, make a to-do list every day. It makes it easy to plan any activities or meetings you may have in addition to homework. Be sure to set priorities(优先的事物).    36
Use spare time wisely. Do you have a study hall(
自习时间)? Instead of wasting that time, read a book or do homework.    37    If a friend asks you to do something and you have homework to do, realize which is more important and see your friend later.
Decide on the time that is good for you to do certain things. If you are more of a morning person, try getting up an hour earlier and do schoolwork before school. Review your notes every day.    38    If you spend a few minutes at the end of every day going over what you learned, it will mean less time studying when it is time for the exam.
29    Studies have shown that getting enough rest helps your memory. When you are tired, everything seems more difficult. It is best to stay on a regular sleeping cycle as much as possible.
Tell your friends and family about your work timetable. Explain that you will be working at certain times and ask them not to disturb(
打扰) you.    40    you can call your friends later.

A. Set goals for yourself.
B. Get a good night
s sleep.
C. Do the most important tasks first.
D. Also, do not be afraid to say
no
E. You should finish your task on time.
F. Don
t take phone calls during the time you set aside for work.
G. Don
t wait until just before a test to try and remember everything.

It was pioneered in the U.K. by TYF Adventure (01437 721611, www.tyf.com) and several thousand people leap from the cliffs near St David’s each year. A half day canyoning trip costs 50 (30 for children under 16).

Imagine going camping for over a week with several of your close friends. You would make sure you have plenty of food and things to cook and eat with. The food would have to be stored properly to prevent spoilage (变质). After finishing your meal, or at the end of your camping trip, you would then put away all the things and throw away the trash properly.
Astronauts basically do the same thing when they go into space. The preparation of food is different, depending on the food type. Some food can be eaten in its natural form, such as fruit. Other food needs water to be added to it, such as spaghetti. Of c
ourse, an oven (烤箱) is provided in the spaceship and the space station to heat food to the proper temperature. There are no refrigerators in space, so space food must be stored and prepared properly to prevent spoilage.
There is salt and pepper in the spaceship but only in liquid (
液体的) form. This is because astronauts can’t put salt or pepper on their food in the normal way in space. The salt and pepper would simply float away. There is a danger that they could get into the equipment or get stuck in an astronaut’s eyes, mouth or nose.
Astronauts eat three meals a day —breakfast, lunch and dinner. When astronauts finish eating, they must throw the packaging (
包装袋) away in a special trash container inside the spaceship. Some packaging actually prevents food from flying away. The food packaging is designed to be flexible (灵活的) and easy to use, as well as to save space for other activities.
