It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.

We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens. while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don't be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!" "OK!" my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his fam house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

A friend of mine whose name was Martin Brown had a bad memory, which made him really famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to always remind him about his appointments, his classes or even his meals! Since Martin was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness often caused him a lot of trouble. It wasn't that he was unintelligent, as some critical people tended to say, he was just very, very absent-minded.

One hot summer day, Professor Brown decided to take his children to the beach. The seaside town he planned to visit was about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he decided to keep the name of the town secret. Unfortunately, by the time Martin had arrived at the train station, the poor forgetful man had forgotten the name of the town. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Martin went back home to find out where he was going.

The professor's wife was surprised to see him back again so soon, but she laughed when she heard what was the matter. She distrusted his memory, so she wrote the name of the town on a piece of paper. Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later, she was astonished to see him outside the house again.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.

Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.

"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.

"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

On the morning of Jan 25, the very day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, I was unpleasantly woken up by a phone call. It was for my father. He picked it up, and I sensed from his shaky voice that something went wrong.

As soon as he hung up, my father turned to my mother and then me, saying, "It was the secretary. He called everyone to meet in the office right now because of the outbreak of the COVID-19."

"But dad, it's the Spring Festival!" How I wished my father could change his mind and stay with us. Wasn't the day meant for families to be together? My father, an official working in another town, seldom came back home. And was the virus serious enough to keep us apart? I was upset. To my great disappointment, father left home without hesitation, comforting me by saying that he would be back soon.

In the following days, news loaded with the fast spread of COVID-19 and the astonishing death toll scared everyone in the country. Father never returned home, only occasionally talking on the WeChat, over which he told us how he went from door to door, checking every family and persuading people to stay at home. I realized that my father was working in dangerous conditions under incredibly great burden. He always looked tired but determined. Every time I told him to take care of himself, he would smile and say, "Don't worry, son. Your father is as strong as a bull." At those moments, tears would well up in my eyes, and all my complaints would go away before I could say anything. The talk was brief but meant a lot to me.

I learned from the media that the medical staff, government officials, and almost everyone involved were working in the battle against the COVID-19. It was these guardian angels (守护天使) who, despite the possibility of getting infected themselves, were risking their life so that the rest of us could be safe. Among them was my father. He's protecting the people, me included.

Para 1: Then came bad news that my father was ill at hospital.

Para 2: Weeks later, my father came back home healthy.

Rescue in a Bottle

Curtis Whitson had rafted down the Arroyo Seco, a river in central California, several times before.

This year, Curtis Whitson knew the water-fall was coming. He figured he would get out of his raft into the shallow water, get down the rocks along ropes on either side of the falls, and continue on his way, as he had on a previous trip.

But this year was different. Heavy snow and spring rains had turned the usually manageable falls into something fierce. And this year, instead of his friends, Whitson's companions were his girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez and his 13-year-old son, Hunter. As the three of them approached the falls late in, the afternoon of the third day of their camping trip, Whitson could tell from the increasing roar of water in the narrowing canyon (峡谷) that they were in serious trouble. There was no way they'd be able to get down the rocks as planned.

"The water was just roaring through there with tremendous force," recalls Whitson, 45.

They had no smart phone service, and they hadn't seen a single person in the past three days. And Whitson knew that they'd be sharing the ground there with rattlesnakes and mountain lions.

As he was thinking what to do, Whitson hit on a bit of luck — he heard voices coming from the other side of the falls. He yelled, but the sound of the rushing water drowned him out.

"We have to get these people a message," Whitson thought.

He grabbed a stick and pulled out his pocketknife to carve "Help" in it. Then he tied a rope to it so the people would know it wasn't just any stick. He tried throwing it over the falls, but it floated away in the wrong direction.

"We've got to do something!" Whitson yelled to his son. "Have we got anything else?"

Then he spotted his water bottle. Whitson grabbed it and carved "Help!" on it. Ramirez also reminded him that he had a pen and paper in his backpack.

Whitson knew it was a slim hope. But he wrote "6-15 19:00 We are stuck here@ the waterfall. Get help please" and pushed the note into the bottle. This time, his throw over the waterfall was perfect.

"All right, that's all we can do," Whitson told Hunter.

Mike licked (舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.

A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted (拍) him on the back. He'd taken first place again in his race.

As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.

It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place—and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. "Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it's got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it." Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim.

It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn't sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn't know if he still had any speed in the pool.

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.

The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out?

Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.

So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, "This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard?"

"The thought hadn't crossed my mind."

"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class."

Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me-You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.

Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.

Work started soon. A well- intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.

Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a mere friend. I have already forgotten the name of an old lady who was a customer on my paper route when I was a twelve-year-old boy in Marinette, Wisconsin back in 1954. Yet it seems like just yesterday that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I can only hope to pass on to someone else someday. On a Saturday afternoon, a friend and I were throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady's house from a secret spot in her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof's edge and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky.

I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window on the old lady's back porch. At the sound of broken glass, we took off from the old lady's yard faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof.

I was so scared about getting caught that I was concerned about the old lady with the broken porch window all the time that night. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her bad luck. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to look into her eyes.

I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.

Paragraph 1:

I waited until it was dark.

Paragraph 2:

The next day, I handed the old lady her paper.

On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling the streets. Suddenly, the walkie- talkie (对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers rang. "The cake shop near the City Museum" has reported burglary (窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately", said the electronic voice.

The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor and found that a thin woman broke open the window and climbed into the store at 5: 20 a.m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.

Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She has an eight-year-old boy to take care of and lives in poverty.

Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara's house. Bob, another officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.

The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.

At that very moment, a child's voice broke the silence, "Mom, is anyone coming for my birthday? Invite them in, please."

After hearing the boy's words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, "Officer, I did steal those things, but there's nothing else I could do. It's my baby's birthday, and I've got neither job nor money. Please don't take those things away. I've just used them to make him a cake."

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.

The boys gathered clothes and supplies, and began their great adventure with Brady the dog early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.

At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper.

An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in midsummer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and windblown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.

"Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the firewind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.

Brady lifted his head and snuffed (嗅) the smokeladen wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope (坡). The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters: "The house next door is on fire!" He went to investigate. That's when he saw a woman crying desperately on their porch.

"The baby's in there!" the woman cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. "The baby" was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter.

Entering the burning house was like "running into a bucket of black paint," Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous to anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout (布局) to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟声) emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.

Paragraph 1

Finally, he touched somethinga shoe, then an ankle.

Paragraph 2

Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below. "NO!" she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地) .

I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. "Why can't you stay in the field?" she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.

Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, "When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble." Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

"Thank goodness!" Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.

She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).

Mama came out of the house. "What's going on?" she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.

"I forgot to lock the gate," Taylor said. "I'm so sorry."

"I know you are" Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. "You learned an important lesson today."

Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

First: Try out our new "Smile!"signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market.

Second: Raise at least $80 by doing street performances. Singing, drawing or storytelling. This would be enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.

We weren't sure how people would react to our signs. It's so easy to walk past a busy crowd, lost in your own world, refusing to make eye-contact with strangers, and feeling alone despite being surrounded, by hundreds of people just like you. Finally. I gathered courage to raise our signs and shouted, "Hi here" to a young couple. They looked over, confused for a moment, read my sign and broke into smiles. Then we saw more smiling faces in the crowd.

Before long, our signs were wildly popular. Tourists wanted photos with us. Strangers stopped to ask us about our signs. We told them the story of our acts of kindness road trip and listened to their stories, too.

Sometimes I'd see unfriendly faces and feel particularly nervous to show them my bright sign. But I was always rewarded with a big smile whenever I did so. Suddenly they were no longer faces of strangers but those of neighbors and friends. This world is full of good people we just don't know yet. We got so wrapped up in our wonderful "Smile!" project that we forgot the other goal. Before we knew it, the sun was setting and we had no money for our trip to Portland.

Teddy was a bear of habit. Every morning he woke up at the same time, stretched, scratched, and yawned(打哈欠). Every morning the bees in his yard delivered three jars of honey so that Teddy ate the same breakfast he'd eaten since he was a hairy baby: toast with honey and tea with extra honey.

Next came his daily routine: practicing the rolling skill and running errands(做杂事). At night he'd read, and then have one last cup of honey tea before bed.

Life was sweet. Until one morning...

One morning something abnormal had happened. There was no honey. The bees had gone on strike!

Teddy's breakfast wasn't the same without honey. Without his honey tea, he couldn't practice rolling, or run errands, or read at night. Teddy became deeply discouraged.

Just then he heard someone say, "Hey, you! In the fur coat!" It was a very small bee with a very loud voice. "We need to talk!" said the bee.

"Talk? Hmmph!" complained Teddy. "I let you all live in my yard. All I ask for is a few jars of honey. You should be grateful rather than strike!"

"A few jars?" said the bee. "Buddy, we deliver three jars of honey to you every day, every month, every year! Do the maths, Einstein."

"The hive(蜂巢) is in ruins!" the bee continued. "It's all we can do to keep the walls from falling in! The roof leaks! Wind blows through the holes!"

The bee showed Teddy the garden. "Look!" the bee said. "Weeds everywhere. We have to fly miles away to find enough flowers to make our honey. So we voted to strike."

"You are taking us for granted." the bee declared. "You want honey? We won't come back unless things have changed. It's up to you, bear." And with that, the very small bee flew off.

The thought of losing his honey upset Teddy greatly. He sat down to think about the situation.

"Maybe I've been too selfish." Teddy said to himself, "I've never thought about what the bees need.

How can I make this right?"

The darkness was gathering as she wobbled (摇晃) in high heels along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of... get out and walk.

It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.

The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. "Maybe he will stop," she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next moment, the car door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation, the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

I woke up in a cold sweat, frightened. Was it a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.

I stood in horror trying to think why she hadn't come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 am, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.

"Hello?" The voice was heavy with sleep.

"Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn't come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place."

"No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!" The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.

Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.

At 2:15 am lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter's car.
