When I was in seventh grade, I was a candy striper (护士助手)at a local hospital in my town. I volunteered about 30 to 40 hours a week during the summer.
Most of the time I spent there was with Mr. Green. He never has any visitors, and nobody seemed to care about his condition. I spent many days there holding his hand and talking to him, helping with anything that needed to be done. He became a close friend of mine, even though he responded with only an occasional hold of my hand. Mr. Green was in a coma (昏迷).
I left for a week for a vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Green was gone. I didn't have the courage to ask any of the nurses where he was, for fear they might tell me he had died. So with many questions unanswered, I continued to volunteer there through my eighthgrade year.
Several years later, when I was a junior in high school, I was at the gas station when I noticed a familiar face.
He began to tell me how, as he lay there comatose, he could hear me talking to him and could feel me holding his hand the whole time.
Growing up on a small farm, I lived a life that I took for granted. My father worked in the city as a plumber (水暖工). He was not highly educated, but he was smart, looking at problems in an engineer's way. He was a man made of leather, brass and chewing tobacco who tried to teach my brother and me useful things, including respect. He also had a temper and was strict with us for he would scold us when we made some careless mistakes. Sometimes, my father seemed like a distant enemy to me and I didn't like him very much.
One day I came home from primary school and his car was already there. Once inside, I was told by my mother that he didn't feel well. His back hurt. My father never missed work; in fact, when he came home, he went to the barn to work even more. I remember looking at him secretly around the corner as he lay on his bed in the middle of the day.
Later, my mother told me he got multiple myeloma (多发性骨髓瘤), a type of blood cancer. As the cancer grows, the person will shrink because the disease destroys the body's energy and the abnormal antibodies cause problems for other cells and tissue. Bones eventually look like Swiss cheese, and when they break, they may never heal. But I didn't realize that my father's time was rather limited and just treated him the same way I used to.
For the last year of my father's life, his entire day consisted of rising from his hospital bed in the living room and walking to his chair to sit and think. He was predictably in that chair when I came home one day during the ninth grade. I do not remember where my mother and brother were, but the two of us were alone.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn't wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it "back home", but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, "I know what I will do, I'll send my mother some roses ."
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it "How many roses can I get for fifty dollars. Ms.? " the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
"No. I have to have roses," he said, "my mom was badly sick last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. 1 want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite." He was stubborn,
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed(幸运的)in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy's roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, "OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard(墓地).

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. "Daddy", she said softly, "Why won't you come back?"
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it. "Daddy will be home soon," she'd tell her mother. "He's at work." When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. "I miss you, Daddy," she'd say, "When will you come back?" Desiree's situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken's birthday. "How will I send him a card?" Desiree asked her mother. "How about if we tie a letter to a balloon," her mother said, "and send it up to heaven?" Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid(美人鱼). Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated a letter to her dad. "Tell him, 'Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,'" she rattled off(快速说). " 'I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.' " ![]()
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree released the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. "Now Dad's going to write back to me," Desiree declared confidently.
Every day since they'd released the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, "Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?" Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

Paragraph 1
One day, 3,000 miles away, Wade was on a duck hunt when suddenly something in the bush caught his eyes.
Paragraph 2
Desiree's fifth birthday came and later on the afternoon, a package arrived.
I was a mother of four children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always valuable, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes in the wardrobe. I always tell myself to be brave and strong. I hope all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children can grow up healthily. It was Christmas time. We drove downtown to see the Christmas lights, and enjoyed a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all looked forward to the coming of the season of goodwill. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for Christmas.
The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty -dollar bill and asked them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (分散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a café waiting for my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.
Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about Christmas, laughing and asking each other about what they had bought. I noted Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars—fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I had given her? I was so angry. After getting home, I called her into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn't hold back my anger and shouted at her, "What about the rest of the money? No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What do you want to do with the rest of the money?"
Paragraph 1:
She was shocked at my reaction and burst into tears.
Paragraph 2:
My anger disappeared.
The hobby is a good thing a person gets from childhood. It can be developed at any age; however, it's best to get it from childhood. We all do some kind of work according to our interest which can give us happiness and joy and that is called hobbies. Some people get different hobbies according to their interest, likes and dislikes.
There are many types of hobbies we can develop such as dancing, singing, drawing, playing indoor or outdoor games, birdwatching, writing, eating, reading, sports, gardening, music, watching TV, cooking, talking. Our hobbies help us in earning a livelihood (生计) and making a successful career. The hobby is something we can fully enjoy in our free time.
My hobbies are cooking, listening to music and gardening; however, I always prefer gardening. Gardening makes me relaxed and gives me more happiness. Every early morning I enjoy my blooming garden, growing plants slowly on a daily basis. I also enjoy sunrise and sunset in my garden. I generally like to do my schoolwork in my evergreen garden. I play badminton with my father in the evening and enjoy the evening walk with my mom. Every day I watch new plants develop and water the plants. I also try planting new and decorative plants in my garden in order to make it more beautiful.
My parents always encourage me to continue all my hobbies. They become so happy when I take my problems in an easy way and try to solve them without getting angry and anxious. My mom says that gardening is a good hobby. From my childhood I work daily in my garden for one hour to keep it well maintained.
Brave Dog wasn't always his name. In the beginning his name was just Stray Dog (流浪狗).
I saw him for the first time one evening when Mattie and I went to milk the cows. He was all dusty coat and skinny-ribbed (皮包骨头的), hardly worth a second glance. But Mattie made a beeline for him, reaching out to pet him, "What a pretty dog!" The dog looked unsure, as if he weren't used to being spoken to kindly. I grabbed Mattie's arm. "Keep away from that stray dog," I told her. "You know how dad feels about stray dogs." "Don't call him Stray Dog," said Mattie. "He's a pretty dog." The dog licked (舔) her face and put a paw on her shoulder. Mattie threw her arms around his neck. "I'm keeping him," she declared, "I'm calling him Pretty Dog."
To Mattie, his name was Pretty Dog. She talked to him, played with him and fed him secretly. He responded by following her like a shadow when no one else was around. To the rest of us, his name was Stray Dog. We did everything we could to chase him away, but he kept coming back. One cold winter day, Dad set off to go ice fishing. Mattie had begged to go, but Dad said no. "You'll keep complaining about cold," he said, "I want to do some serious fishing."
Dad came home a few hours later. "Get some fine ones," he shouted from the porch (门廊). "Come to see!" Ma and I came out. "Where's Mattie?" Dad asked. Ma and I looked at each other in confusion, both thinking Mattie was with the other. Then, Ma strode to the closet. "Her coat and boots are gone." Ma turned to Dad with troubled eyes, "Maybe she went after you." Worry lines creased(弄皱) Dad's face. "She never came to the lake. Come on; we need to find her."

When I was a child growing up in the Netherlands, I often begged my mother to tell me this story about an experience her family had at the end of World War Ⅱ.
During the terrible last winter of the German occupation, food was rare in the Netherlands. People were so hungry that they began to eat small animals and many things not normally considered edible (可食用的) , including tulip bulbs (郁金香球茎) , which could be cooked like potatoes.
For centuries my mother's family had owned a highly successful tulip business, which provided jobs for many in our village. But the war shut their business down, and during the winter of hunger, my grandfather, Albert, donated all his tulip bulbs to feed the hungriest villagers. For years, Albert had been trying to grow a black tulip. By careful selection, he was very close. So he guarded these few bulbs seriously to prevent people from stealing them for food.
One day, it was announced that the war was over. But there was much destruction and the Dutch people still faced dangers. My grandfather looked at his pale, thin children and realized that the hunger could continue for a long time, so he made his decision. He seized a shovel (铁铲) and went into the garden. There he found my mother, Vivian, who was just seven years old, looking nervous. Over her shoulder, Albert saw a band of Germans coming toward them down the street. He whispered to Vivian to run inside the house and began digging for his bulbs. But it was too late. Someone had already stolen them. Angry and desperate, he ran toward the street screaming, "They have stolen my tulip bulbs!" Vivian, watching from the doorway, cried out and ran to stop him. Before she could reach her father, a German soldier raised his gun and shot him.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man called Ben was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man, Leo, had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.
And every afternoon when Ben could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. Leo began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and lightened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As Ben described all this in detail, Leo would close his eyes and imagine the beautiful scene.
One warm afternoon Ben described a parade passing by. Although Leo
couldn't hear the band — he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the
window described it with descriptive words. Each time the nurse saw the warm and
touching scene
she was always struck by devoted friendship between these two men. Days and weeks passed.

Daryl was a lorry driver and on his shortest way to Los Angeles there was a weather-beaten bridge he had to drive over day after day for almost 3 years.
Staying at home alone, his 66-year-old mum got into a strange habit of telling his sweet son the headline of the noon news on the phone. It was a daily routine for Daryl to pick up the cellphone at 12: 30 when he was about to drive away from the old shabby bridge. Unbelievable as it sounded, it was true, though.
The sun today was rising when Daryl's delivery truck reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before nightfall, or he would have annoyed his boss. All looked like it was going to be a good day.
Two hours later, out of nowhere, he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. Daryl often passed dead animals on the roadside but he knew that this was something different. He slammed on his brakes and the truck screeched to a halt.
It turned out to be a girl. Daryl jumped down, raced forward and tried shaking her awake but she wouldn't move, so he lifted her up and carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn't be run over there.
Now she was someone else's problem. He had to make it to Los Angeles by nightfall and didn't have time to be a hero. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl lying still by the side of the road, he was deep in thought, "What if she was smelt by wild animals around or knocked again by other drivers passing by?"

While 1 was sitting in the living room, the days that I spent with my mom crowded in on me. We had a very Tom and Jerry relationship. She was a strict trainer; I was naughty. She would ask me to buy groceries, and I wouldn't come right home because I'd be using the change from the milk and bread to play video games at the supermarket. I loved video games. I was a master at Street Fighter. I could go forever on a single play. I'd drop a coin in, time would fly, and the next thing 1 knew there'd be a woman standing behind me with a belt. It was a race. I'd take off out the door and through the dusty streets of Eden Park, climbing over walls. It was a normal thing in our neighborhood:
Everyone knew: The child would come through like a bat out of hell, and his mom would be right there behind him. She could go fast in high heels, but if she really wanted to come after me, she'd kick her shoes off while still going at top speed. She'd do this strange move with her ankles and the heels would go flying and she wouldn't even miss a step. When 1 was little she always caught me, but as I got older I got faster. So it was not easy for her to catch me.
Paragraph 1: When speed failed her, she used her wisdom.

Laurie had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
Laurie was told that she had a tough competition this year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. "She is the one you have to beat this year, " the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
"Jinny," called someone. "You'd better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away."
"I thought I gave him my music tape an hour ago," said Jinny. "Tell him it's the green box with my initials written in white in the righthand corner."
"He said you never gave it to him, and he's getting angry."
"Then I don't know what I did with it." said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating.

The Wilsons were having dinner. The food was left from their Thanksgiving dinner two days before: turkey soup and turkey meat mixed with potatoes. Eleven-year-old Angelina asked, "Are we having turkey ice cream, too?" Her father replied, "Angelina, have you forgotten that I had no job for a whole year? Now I have work again. You should be very thankful." "I'm sorry I said that about the turkey! But unless I get a new dress, I will not look good for the Christmas Festival." Angelina murmured.
The Festival was the winter holiday celebration of a group she belonged to: the Avalon Girls' Service Club. They wrote cheerful cards for hospital patients. They cooked meals for the homeless. But the Christmas Festival was different. The girls wore party clothes and many people came to see them perform. Angelina had only a plain gray dress that she had worn to the event last year. And now it was a little too short. Angelina appealed to her parents to buy one for her, a beautiful red dress in Forbes' Store. Her mother sighed, “Well, we cannot buy it. We have to be careful. You never know when I might lose my job.”
All hope was not gone. There was a sign in the Forbes store window that said "layaway (分期付款)" . Angelina pulled ten worn dollar bills from her coat pocket. She ran to the store and begged the salesperson, Mrs. Harding, to hold 'her' dress for her. "Ok. But you must come back in two weeks to pay the rest." Angelina felt like jumping into the air. She was so happy that she told Mrs. Harding about the Avalon Service Club's work and its Christmas party.
Then, Angelina shook and suffered in the cold wind looking for work. Finally, Angelina got a job making new clothing for dolls. Angelina was excellent at sewing. Sure enough, the dolls' dresses turned out beautiful. She got twenty dollars. Still, she was far from having enough money for her dress. She felt helpless as the final payment date arrived.
She returned sadly to Forbes' Store, "I don't have enough money for the dress." Then she saw Mrs. Harding's eyes were red. She looked like she had been crying. She said the store was closing and she was losing her job.

Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but some time later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was abruptly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

In a meeting room, I faced the judges seated behind a table holding my fate in their hands. These same judges had rejected me twice before. This was my last chance. Would it finally be my turn?
“Tell us, Jason,” one judge said, “why do you want to be Pistol Pete?” That summer I watched a cowboy football game. I was attracted by Pistol Pete. He was larger than our body. He could get everyone in the entire stadium on their feet shouting “Come on!” and make sure they had fun. Being the mascot (吉祥物) fit my personality. I loved getting attention—and a laugh. I didn't have the leg or the speed to play football. But no one could top me when it came to school spirit.
I entered a national high school mascot competition and finished twelfth. When tryouts (选拔) for Pistol Pete were announced during my first year at university, my academic adviser encouraged me to work hard at the mascot training. Then came the interview with the judges. The main question was, “Why do you want to be Pistol Pete?”
“Because I've been training for this all my life,” I told the judges.
The judges gathered the candidates to announce their decision. They'd selected two students. I could only watch as those two students jumped into the air.
I talked about my dream to my co-workers at my part-time job, and they were behind me 100 percent. When tryouts came the following spring, I was more than ready. Then I stepped before the judges again.
“You know me from last year,” I said. “You know how badly I want this. And you know how good I'd be.” I thought it was a done deal that I'd spend my senior year being Pistol Pete, living my dream.

When De Gullickson was assigning project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all I hoped he wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Gullickson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't t mean or abusive. He just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say. I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis(假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings, Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project! I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades-the exact opposite of me. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions, we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers! I wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

One of my most memorable trips took place during the summer vacation about three years ago, when my sister, my aunt and I took a trip to Spain because we were moving. On the day of the trip, I lay in bed thinking about my friends whom I was going to leave behind and thoughts were flooding in.
When we arrived at the hire station, we seemed to have some problems with our luggage because it was too much for a taxi, so we had to book a van (厢式送货车)to lake our luggage to the airport. We waited for a long period to find a perfect van that would fit our luggage.
Before leaving, I fell very bad because I was going to a different country and was going to miss all my friends and family. I was not comfortable and cried.
The journey was almost perfect at the beginning, but soon it began to rain. Because of the rain, the drivers could not see far away, which caused a huge traffic jam. I was sitting by the window with a can of Coke that I had bought in the store earlier. My aunt and sister fell asleep, and during this lime, I felt bored and thought about other things that bothered me. My eyes turned to the mountain in front of us.
A bus suddenly appeared in the picture. It was very close to us. Cars sped past us without any speed limit. Beside me was a very deep lake: I wondered to myself what if something or someone fell inside it. Suddenly, a bus in front of our van stopped, and because it was raining heavily and the van was going fast, no one could see what was going to happen. Then, bang, we bumped into each other. Our van overturned, but luckily, it didn't fall into the lake. People came to help us get out of the van because we were blocked and the driver was half-dead.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below.
"NO!" she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地).
I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束)at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. "Why can't you stay in the field?" she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.
Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, "When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble."
Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
"Thank goodness!" Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.
She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).
Mama came out of the house. "What's going on?" she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
"I forgot to lock the gate," Taylor said. "I'm so sorry."
"I know you are" Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. "You learned an important lesson today."
Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link(铁丝网)fence. "We need to make the hole bigger, "he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.
Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me—we were both lonely and anxious—and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.
There weren't any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends—a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend no joke. Weird kid.
One day, my parents asked Bill whether he'd watch me while they were away on business. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became "my" room.
Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor(割草机)someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow(铲雪机)to the front of the lawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. "Sure you will. You'll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing, "Bill said with a smile.
One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, "What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?" My parents said I could go over and ask him.

Jenny was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn't want to let her teammates down.
When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.
She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn't even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny's mother looked concerned. "You have to eat something," she said. "It's important to keep your strength up."
"I know, I'm just not hungry this morning," Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn't be able to forgive herself.
Jenny's mom sensed her daughter's worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. "You'll be great, dear. Just do your best. That's all that matters."
Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother's kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.
