The next morning when Callie arrived at school, her friend Tamara was waiting for her, who had a surprise for Callie. "My mom bought tickets for us to go to Fun World this Sunday." Tamara said. The girls had been waiting for months for the new amusement park to open.

Callie worried about her problem for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood. "I know you want to go with Tamara and also help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choices. You need to make your own decisions, but I know you will do what is the best." Her mother said.

Once there was a slave named Androcles, who was so badly treated by his master that he resolved to run away from him. He therefore secretly left his master's house and hid himself in a forest, some miles distant from the city.

After wandering about for some time, he came to a large cave, and overcome by hunger and tiredness, he lay down in it, and soon fell fast asleep.

He was suddenly awakened by the roar of a wild beast; a great lion stood right at the mouth of the cave. There was no way he could escape!

Androcles expected nothing else than to be at once torn to pieces, but to his great surprise, the lion came gently towards him, without showing any signs of anger. It gave forth a low and mournful (悲哀的) sound, as if it were begging for his assistance. As the lion approached him, he noticed that one of its feet was swollen.

He then went up to the lion, took hold of the wounded paw (爪子), and examined it as a surgeon would examine a patient. He was not long in finding out the cause of the swelling; for he saw in the ball of the foot a very large thorn (刺). The slave pulled out the thorn, and pressed out of the wound a quantity of matter, which gave the lion immediate relief.

Then, the lion began to show his gratitude by every means in his power. He jumped about like a playful spaniel (西班牙猎犬), wagged his great tail, and licked the hands and feet of his physician. From that moment Androcles became his guest; the lion always shared his prey.

The slave continued to live like this for several months. At length, wandering carelessly through the woods, he was seized by a company of soldiers who were sent by the master to search for him.

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.

The boys packed clothes and supplies into a bag, and began their great adventure with the dog Brady early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.

At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite (野营地). The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.

"Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.

Brady lifted his head and sniffed the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope. The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.

As expected, he cleared his throat and started to say, "Er… What… What do you really want to do in the gorgeous future?"

I was silent for a moment playing with the cellphone. I kept thinking, "Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?" later I replied, "Well, I want to be a writer."

I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But he answered surprisingly, "Interesting idea!" I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation(犹豫).

"Are you serious, Dad?"

"Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it's late. Let's take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs for dinner, and we can talk more. "

Early next morning we packed up the equipment and set off along the coast. We didn't talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.

There were no big waves and bright sunlight at that time. "Let's see if we are lucky," he said, and picked up a cage with a rope tied to it and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said, "Give me a hand with this." Then we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck(甲板).

To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of soft shell crabs. Squatting (蹲) down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape(逃跑). Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.

The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, "Are these yours?" "Yes, sir," the farmer answered timidly. "Have you killed the man?" "No, no, sir," the farmer said in a hurry. "When did you see the dead man?" "About seven last evening." "Did you see who killed the man?" "No, sir." My sister Priscilla and I just came back from a week-long vacation in Portugal with lots of photos. I'll remember so many wonderful things about my trip to the cities of Lisbon and Porto, but one experience in particular sticks out, something that happened on our last night in Lisbon.

Before the trip, I put together a very detailed route of places to see. One of the must-visit places on my list was Livraria do Simao, the smallest bookstore in Lisbon. On our very first day in Lisbon, Priscilla and I searched for it. We found the oldest bookstore in the world. But the smallest one was impossible to find! Back at the hotel, where we had Wi-Fi, I looked the bookstore up again, hoping we'd have time to find it on another day. But our schedule was delayed, and we probably wouldn't have time to look for it.

On our last full day in Lisbon, Priscilla and I took a day trip to Cascais, a coastal town outside the city. We decided, at the last minute, to visit a historic flea market (跳蚤市场). We walked for about an hour, up many steep hills. When we finally reached the market, completely out of breath, all the sellers were closing up shop. Not to mention that we were both tired and hungry. Priscilla and I argued over the directions. I insisted we turn right, which ended up being another bad decision. We climbed up more steep hills, farther and farther away from any area we recognized. We made another right turn onto a random street and Priscilla stopped to check the map. Meanwhile, I looked up at the street sign, Rua da Madalena. I'd heard that name before. We continued a little farther up the street, and I spotted a few people hanging out in a lane. There was something particularly familiar about the scene. I looked closer. There was a small store practically hidden in the lane. It had books in its windows.

Paragraph 1:

Oh my goodness! The bookstore

Paragraph 2:

Soon, it was time for us to say goodbye.

Her name was Mrs Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.

However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners…he is the joy to be around. ”His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle. ”His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest. ”Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. ” By now, Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.

She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.

Paragraph 1:

Mrs Thompson, whose voice choked up with tears, thanked her students for their presents.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling in a yellow basket.

“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.

Sara's mother really didn't think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.

“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a family member.

But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara's Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the same things that ducks in the wild do.

Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara's parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life and Sara could still visit her.

The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

Before painting the portrait, the woman asked the painter to draw more jewels. The painter curiously asked why, but the woman refused to explain. After a week, the portrait was done and the woman came to take the painting. At this moment, she hit on an evil idea of bullying the unknown young artist. She thought, "The portrait is me. The young man was surprised, for he had never come across such an experience. He argued with her, expecting this woman to keep to the agreement.

"I can only pay 200 dollars to buy the painting," the woman thought she would win for sure.

The young painter knew the woman broke her promise on purpose, so he felt annoyed. He said in a firm voice, "No, I would prefer to keep this painting rather than be humiliated(羞辱) by you. Today you break your word and some day you must pay 20 times for it."

"What a joke! 20 times will be 40,000! I won't be stupid to pay 40,000 dollars to buy the painting!"

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针)in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

Nevertheless, he opened the shop's door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的)shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”

“I'll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”

Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (捶打)from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play. I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.

Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents. Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.

Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, "Patty, you play Star. Come and get your script(剧本). "I was shocked. Jim, an excellent boy,was playing the other lead. To learn my lines, I practiced every day and finally memorized them. I became more confident and happier.

Then we started practising acting. Jim played the character,a Scrooge(吝啬鬼),who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.

Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up. To thank him, Star kisses his hand.

One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star. I was laughed at by someone.

The teacher asked,"Who did this?" Nobody knew. We started rehearsing(排练),but my heart wasn't in it. The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn't happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.

Soon it was the day before the show. It was time for the dress rehearsal. I was excited. Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.

When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set. I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, "I can't do it. Please get someone else!"

On a Sunday morning, Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, "Mom, are you OK?" "Honey," Mom said weakly. "I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed."

Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help? First, he wiped up the crumbs (碎屑) of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Tony thought. Sunday was the day when mom did laundry (要洗的衣物). Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning (快速旋转) in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, in which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.

Tony opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said "START". Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble (翻滚) around. That was easy!

Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep (发出哔哔声). That meant the washing was done. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer(脱水机). Everything seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

AGIFT FOR GRANDPA

Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.

The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents' eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.

A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.

Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly "Grandpa, we are back!"

Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn't stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly(倔强地), "I can! " Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.

The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!

But now Grandpa couldn't get up, which made them worried. "We'd think out a way to cheer him up." Jack said. "Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird." Berlin suggested. "But he hates birds being caged!" Jack shook his head.

Then a bright idea came to Jack's mind. "Why not make a cane(拐杖)out of a young tree!"

During this past year, I've had a car trouble. When it happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn't bothered to help. At that time, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He saw the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log(木头) on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man's hand, but he wouldn't take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

After graduating from university, I decided to become a pilot and fly commercially. I chose a flying school which had a good reputation, enrolled and joined a class of six other trainees. We completed our ground school, where we were taught all the information we would need to fly an aircraft safely. The basics included the controls of the aircraft, its instruments and the rules we would have to obey while in the air.

Our instructors were all professional pilots and were very knowledgeable but also very strict. It was difficult for them to accept inaccuracy, so we were required to get Straight-A's in each test. It was explained to us that we could not afford to make an error as it could cost lives, so, to get my license, I doubled my efforts, learning the meaning of the word "thorough".

Later we had 10 hours of hands-on lessons in an exact model aircraft, a "simulator". My instructor sat next to me, watching my every move, always with a serious look. Sometimes I thought he over-reacted to my small mistakes.

The time arrived for us to take to the air for the first time. My instructor was an experienced pilot having flown big jets but was nearing retirement. As we went to take off, he pointed out the control tower and told me there was always a person on duty there for emergencies. I nodded firmly, but I never thought there was a chance I would have to call him on the radio.

We were away from our airfield and practising basic turns at about 6, 000 feet. Everything was going smoothly. Suddenly, my instructor started to shake and he put in his hand on his chest with his head falling forward. Thankfully, in control of the aircraft at that time, I steadied the aircraft and turned to look at him anxiously. He seemed to be unconscious. Our lives were in danger, and I had to put aside my uneasiness. It flashed into my mind that situations like this had been covered in ground school.

Paragraph 1:

Armed with what I had learned, I quickly became much calmer.

Paragraph 2:

Fifteen years ago, I was born in a big family. I had been taught that money couldn't buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen. As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.

As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest (牧师), but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers.  As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts accompanied by women in their designer dresses with matching handbags and shoes.

My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our hand-me-down clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this revealed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.

I never stopped those fantasies, even when I was in middle school. Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. As a result, I constantly felt ashamed. Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my poverty was embarrassingly apparent on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sister's old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her like a shadow. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.

On Saturday night, my best friend called and invited me to her birthday the next day. I was very excited to go there, but I needed permission from my parents.

I went to my dad's room and softly said, "Dad, tomorrow is my best friend's birthday and I really want to go." Papa said, "OK. I don't mind, but ask your mom."

I asked my mom and she said, "OK. You can go, but you have to be back before 10."

The next morning my mom was surprised to see me. No alarm. No Mom's warning. I just woke up by myself. Finally, the whole day had passed and it was party time. My dad dropped me off at my friend's place and told me that he would pick me up at 10. I said "OK" and ran away.

I enjoyed myself a lot at the party. We had dinner and played so many games. It was 10 finally. I remembered my mom telling me that I should be back before 10. I came out and started searching for my dad, but I could not find him. I was so worried and scared. I waited and waited, and then I started walking. I thought at least I could walk home as my house was 20 minutes away from my friend's. As I was walking, I was crying as I had never walked alone on the road that late at night.

Suddenly I heard someone shouting something. I was scared and started walking fast. I thought some criminal(不法分子) was there. As I was walking fast, I heard someone walking fast behind me. I started running and crying, and then I saw some parked cars. I hid behind the cars. I saw a shadow searching for me. I hoped someone would help me. After a while, I could not see the shadow, so I came out slowly and ran towards my home.
