Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room. She had not competed since the accident. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. Today was very important in her comeback (复出). "If I can win today," she thought, "I can skate in the World Cup next year."
Before Laurie had her accident, everyone had said that she was the one to beat.
She thought back to that car accident where her right knee was badly injured. She spent six total months on recovery, treatment and practice because she hoped to regain her skill.
"Hello, Laurie," one of her friends burst in. "How's the knee? Is it going to slow you down?"
"I guess we'll find out tonight," Laurie said.
"There's a girl named Jinny, strong in everything. She's the only real competitor you have to beat," the friend said and hurried out.
Hearing that, Laurie decided to show her most difficult jump. "If I don't try it, I won't stand a chance," she thought. "Does anyone believe that I can still win?"
Suddenly her right knee sent pain up and down her leg. The doctor said it would do that for a while. "What makes you think you have a chance tonight?" she said to herself.
After the pain passed, she moved slowly to warm up. Then she said firmly, "I must win!"
At that moment, a young woman hurried in with a skate equipment bag. She put some of her belongings onto a chair. Her bag fell to the floor. "Hi, I'm Jinny Jordan," she said.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. "So this is my competitor," thought Laurie. "Because of her, I may lose tonight."
"I'm Laurie Collins," Laurie told Jinny. "Something fell out of your bag, Jinny."
As Jinny began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
"Jinny," someone called, "your tape of music is missing. You are the next one! Laurie, after Jinny."
"Oh, my God! I thought I had handed it in hours ago, the green box with my name on," screamed Jinny, hurrying out.

Paragraph 2:

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed (辗转) and turned in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung (附着) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, "It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, "The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, "How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, "You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

"Sami, Sami!" Grandpa cried. "Don't be scared, little one, come to me, quickly."
Old Man Donovan was a mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that's what we had heard.
His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit.
There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan.
One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, "Hey, girl!" in a gruff, low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts.
"Come here," he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. "Take these home,” he commanded. We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples.
As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch. We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to. Unfortunately, his family never seemed to enjoy our company. They never smiled or welcomed us in.
Paragraph 1:
Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him.……
Paragraph 2:
The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. ……
As a father, I was always seeking for opportunities to teach my son how to balance risk with freedom.
Last month, I bought four little chicks. I decided to make a beautiful coop (鸡笼) for them.
In the next few weeks, I, together with my son Gordon, spent all our spare time in the garage. Finally, the coop was finished.
While admiring his well-made handwork, Gordon suddenly raised his head and asked,
"Dad, shall we lock the chicks in the coop all the time? I am afraid they will be attacked by some fierce animals or become someone's chicken soup?" Seeing his anxious look, I cracked a smile and asked, "Do you want to be trapped in a limited room or have the freedom to get around?" Hesitant for a while, he murmured, "Freedom, of course." "Chicks will also think so." Therefore, our chicks were often seen chasing around in the lawns (草坪), digging for bugs in the bushes and laying eggs in the yard.
Yesterday, we needed to go downtown to shop for food supply after lunch. Knowing that the chicks wouldn't go very far, we left home with them running around the lawn. When we got back, the first thing Gordon did was to check on his chicks. There were only three chicks in the yard. Their feathers were no longer fair and smooth but dirty and tangled (乱糟糟的). Hearing our steps, they jumped to their feet and scattered in all directions, seeming to have just experienced a terrifying disaster. Worse still, Pecky, Gordon's favourite chick was nowhere to be found.
We searched the yard inch by inch and found some feathers littering the yard. Seeing this, Gordon's eyes got watery. I picked Gordon up and comforted him. As we began to accept the fact that we were now a three-chick family, we heard it—a soft clucking (咯咯声) sound under a bush.
Para 1: I put Gordon down and we looked under the bush.
Para 2: The next day Gordon offered to have a talk with me.

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

Tom noticed the flame was reaching up.
Paragraph 2:
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help.
Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. "What could be causing everyone to act this way?"
Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, "My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution." The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not reasonable, and I believed I deserved a second chance.

Therefore, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year.
Paragraph 2:
Ten months later, that chance came.
It was 1st January, the first day of the year and a holiday for me. What luck! I decided to withdraw some money from the bank, The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, replied indifferently as usual to my polite "Happy New Year." He nodded and I sat in front of him.
Minutes passed but he didn't raise his head.
Then very hesitantly I put my form and booklet in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register. After a few minutes he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file, from which he started filling in my details, I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and register.
After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I said the words, I felt as if a bomb had fallen on him. He shouted, "Nothing is done, it will take time!"
Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had tuned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done. We do not even feel the need to thank them for being there, He must be feeling so anxious that “here comes another person who will push me for doing his work first.”

One Thing I'm Proud of
September is most beautiful in Strathroy, where people wholeheartedly enjoy the simple pleasures of life and nature.
Roland was no exception. He was a magnificent German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬) ,a little lazy and overweight though. He loved to doze in the backyard. He yawned and stretched his body as he heard the slowly approaching footsteps of Mrs. Proudfoot. "Come have your lunch dear! "said Mrs. Proudfoot with her usual fondness for him and he wagged his tail affectionately in return.
Roland was licking the last piece of meat in his plate when the doorbell burst into music. Mrs. Proudfoot hurried to answer the door. Roland stood alert by her side.
"Good noon Mrs. Proudfoot". It was Sam, her teenage neighbor. "My! My! You look pale! What happened?" asked Mrs. Proudfoot with genuine worry. She immediately waved him in and closed the door behind. Mrs. Proudfoot was a lonely widow, but was well loved in her neighborhood especially by kids, though she had no kids to call her own.
Once encouraged, Sam disclosed his dilemma. "My friend Barry lost a rare book of school library. It costs 150 dollars, but he has only 55 dollars and his poor parents can't afford to pay the rest. Barry is working part time but that's far from enough." With a dramatic sigh he continued, "If he didn't refund the loss before the end of term, he will be dismissed from final exams. That will ruin his future! I have to help him, whatever it takes. He is my best friend."
"Don't worry, Sammy. You want me to pay…"but Mrs. Proudfoot was interrupted. "No, No, Mrs. Proudfoot. This is not what I came here for. I'll work for you. Would you favor me to walk your dog please? For 2 dollars a day. "He looked up with begging eyes.
Mrs. Proudfoot clapped her hands in agreement, "That can't be better! I've been worried about Roland lately. He does need some exercise! It's nice of you to make such an offer."
Sam thanked her over and over, "I will start tomorrow morning."

Sam arrived very early the next morning.
Paragraph 2:
A month later, Mrs. Proudfoot was delighted to find Roland fit and energetic.
My family moved from Taiwan to a small town in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends, Santa Claus would come down one's chimney(烟囱) and put toys in one's stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up "stocking" in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail(钉子) already on the mantel(壁炉). Obviously the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Staring at the sock and imagining the delicately(精致地)-packed gift in it, I couldn't help giggling(咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to hold back my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn't know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late?Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet(拖着脚步) and opened the door.

Jack took a long look at his speedometer (车速表) before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a man get caught so often?
The policeman was stepping out of his car, the big pad in his hand.
Bob? Bob from church? Jack sank farther into his coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A policeman catching a man from his own church. A man who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office.
Jumping out of the car, he approached the man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform. "Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this." "Hello, Jack." No smile. "Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids." "Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good.
"I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit — just this once." Jack toed at a stone on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?"
"I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our neighborhood." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction.
"What did you clock me at?" "Seventy. Would you sit back in your car please?" "Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was merely 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket.
"Please, Jack, in the car." Anxious, Jack ducked through the still-open door. Banging the door, he stared at the dashboard (仪表盘). The minutes ticked by. Bob wrote something on the pad. Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license?
Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this policeman again.

It was somewhere between spring and summer my mom and I were driving through the countryside Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. "What are you doing? "I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask," Do you know someone there?" She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers?" She smiled slightly," I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员). ""What?" She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn't gotten any in a while."
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again," Did you leave your name?" To this she answered instantly," No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. "
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. "Where are they?" Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00 ten years ago. They were soft and warn and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation.to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
"Society has changed, people have changed," he murmured to himself. "Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost."
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.
Paragraph 1
Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves.

"I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy, "said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪)get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile." I guess this is it, "he said." I'll see you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, "Okay, Poppy, time to go back home."
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn't.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy up?"asked Dad. "We've tried everything. "
"I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, "smiled Mom." Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy. "
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Para 1. Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared.
Para 2. A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university.
When I was in middle school, I thought there were only two options—I could somehow be cool, or I could somehow be invisible. And I have to say, I was doing pretty well at option two. Until third period on the first day, when a teacher had us fill out a questionnaire with "get to know you" questions. I assumed hat she would be reading them privately, so I felt safe to share from the perspective of a real me.
The teacher collected the sheets, shuffled(搅乱)them, and redistributed them to the class. We went one by one. We‘d read the student's name and then our three favorite answers.
My sheet end up in the hands of a kid who was one of the coolest and meanest. What is "favorite answer" of mine were the three worst ones to be read out loud. The first question was "What's your favorite movie?" The other kids wrote Scream and Universal Soldier. He read my answer, Beauty and the Beast. A laugh erupted from the room, and my cheeks burning because I knew we were just getting started.
The next question he read was" Where would you like to travel?" The others had said "Australia, ""Japan." I wrote "Wherever a book takes me." The laughter this time had an explosive quality to it. The kids were high-fiving.
The final question was "What do you like to do on the weekends?" The other kids wrote" Hang out with friends" and "go to the mall." I wrote "perform with Clowns." Those who weren't laughing at me were sort of staring at me in disgust. I felt about an inch tall.

But then, something amazing happened.
……
I don't remember the teacher or the kids' names, but I remember Michelle Siever's name.
At a medical clinic in Waterloo, Ontario, an elderly woman sat on the edge of a waiting room chair singing the Celine Dion tune "My Heart Will Go On." Other than a slight rhythmic rocking of her body to the Titanic theme song, she kept still, with her arms crossed elegantly over her chest. With little effort, she was able to send her sweet,high-pitched (尖声的) voice exploding into every comer of the clinic.
I had fun watching how people reacted. There was a lot of changing in seats, but mainly they awkwardly looked away and tried to pretend there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.
I was there with my father, who was getting a routine blood test, when the woman arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my dad. Because she was so tiny, she was forced to sit on the edge of the chair so her feet could touch the floor. The position made it seem as though she were sitting forward to engage in conversation with him. She smiled at him, and he smiled back.
I was concerned about how my dad would react to the possible invasion of his space. He was 77 at the time and had been living with Alzheimer's (老年痴呆症) for several years. He was a brilliant and shy military man. When he was healthy,he tolerated people's eccentricities (古怪) dutifully but with silent disapproval. He considered it wholly bad mannered to bring too much unnecessary attention to oneself. Since Alzheimer's has a tendency to cause damage to a person's patience and self-control. Dad had got into a few challenging and unpleasant situations in the past. I couldn't help but think that this little woman was playing with fire.
Her singing began gently, like a quiet hum. I glanced over at Dad. His smile was gone, and he was staring right at her. She was staring back. I couldn't read his expression, but it seemed to be something like confusion. This wasn't an unusual state for him.

The comeback
Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink (溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
"If I can win today," she thought, "I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics."
Laurie was just told that she had a tough competition this year, a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. "She is the one you have to beat this year," the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her age. The young woman put some of her belongings onto a chair. However, the bag fell to the floor.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. "So this is my competition," thought Laurie. "Because of her, I may lose tonight."
"This costume was my mum's idea," Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. "I look like a flag."
Laurie couldn't keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny's skating bag. "Some stuff fell out of your bag," Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
"Jinny," called someone, "you'd better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away."
"I thought I gave him my music tape half an hour ago," said Jinny. "Tell him it's the green box with my initials (姓名首字母) written in white in the right-hand corner."
"He claims you never gave it to him, and he is getting angry."
"Then I don't know what I did with it," said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.

It was a beautiful Sunday in early December Ten-year-old Riley Christensen and her mother Lynn, were huddled in front of the family computer, checking out models and prices of bikes." Let's pick one out for Dad's birthday." Mother suggested to her daughter. Riley nodded happily. She could even imagine how excited Dad would be when receiving such a big surprise, and maybe they would ride in the park together.
Riley was looking through the home page of the Bike Rack, a shop in their town of St. Charles, Illinois, when a video link for Project Mobility caught their eye.
Out of curiosity, she clicked on it. The short video told how Hal Honeyman, a Bike Rack Co-owner, had created an organization to provide specially engineered bicycles to people with disabilities. It showed the happy faces of those who were now riding them-accident victims, injured soldiers, and children with disabilities, including Hal's son, who had been born with cerebral palsy.
There was silence for moments. Suddenly, there came Riley's determined voice." Mom, I'm going to buy such a bike for one of those kids." A bit surprised, Mother pulled Riley into her arms, and kissed her on the forehead." Sweetheart, it may be a big challenge for us!" Mother said." But for a kid who can't walk, such a bike would be a marvelous Christmas present!" Riley smiled.
Two days later, Riley ran into the kitchen just like a gust of wind, and cheerfully showed her mother a letter she had written asking for donations. "I think it's amazing that there are such special bikes for kids who can't walk," the letter said, "I saw on the Net how happy a boy was when he got one... I'm writing to ask for your help."
Mother was deeply touched by her daughter's effort, but doubts quickly occurred. The cost of just one of those special bikes could be as high as $4,000.

I didn't see the thin plastic tape running across the bread bag when I put the bread in my shopping cart or when I checked out. It wasn't until I unpacked the bread at home that I realized that I'd broken the rules again.
That stupid plastic tape joined the long list of mistakes I made in just one week of trying to eat plastic-free. Last month, I challenged myself to purchase a week's worth of food without bringing home any plastic. That meant no yogurt containers or plastic packages.
I chose a budget of $115(roughly half-way between the average weekly grocery bill for a family of two in Massachusetts). On Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot of a well-known zero-waste shopping center.
I started in the produce section, where I typically got a plastic bag of organic baby carrots. This time, I could not go there because every vegetable in the organic section was packed in plastic containers. But I found some beautiful carrots among the non-organic produce. Then I saw the plastic price labels hanging off their rubber bands. I rolled my cart past the green beans and grapes, all inside the plastic. I weighed loose apples, onions and sweet potatoes. My anxiety kicked in-a feeling that I wouldn't have enough. So, I bought a head of cabbage.
I tapped prices into the calculator on my phone. Leaving the produce section, I was in good shape, at $32. It was time to search for protein.
I headed to the meat counter. Again, everything was prepackaged in plastic. But the man behind the glass kindly agreed to put some chicken and meat, separately, in paper bags. Together they were $21.
Tofu, cheese, yogurt and pretty much everything in the dairy section were prepackaged in plastic. Even the bottled milk had a plastic cap. But there were lots of eggs in those paper bags.
