It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived near by because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us Surprise Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for Candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物)stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cod.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精),or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

“Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

“Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"

Gramma Goodie visits her grandkids every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts the same. First she rings the doorbell. Then Chris jumps down the stairs. Jamie runs to open the door. And every time, Gramma Goodie has gifts. But the kids never know what she'll bring.

Sometimes it's something you need, like socks or underwear. Sometimes it's movie tickets or a giant teddy bear. It could be a kite or a stuffed (填充的) baby kangaroo. It could be a lollipop (棒棒糖) that turns your tongue blue.

Well, one Sunday, Gramma rang the doorbell. Chris hurried down the stairs. And Jamie threw open the door.

"Hello, my darlings", Gramma Goodie said with a smile. "Look what I have for you. " She pulled out a pack of cards, and they played "Go fish" all afternoon. At the end of the day, Gramma gave everyone kisses. Then she said her good-byes.

As she drove away, Chris and Jamie heard their parents talking. They said that Gramma Goodie's birthday was next Sunday. They were going to plan a special dinner and bake a delicious cake for her birthday surprise.

"Gramma Goodie has a birthday?" they thought. Both were a little puzzled. Grown- ups have birthdays? Who in the world knew?

"Well, we have to get her a gift," Jamie decided.

"But what?" asked Chris. "Gramma Goodie has almost EVERYTHING!"

Jamie thought about scarves and flowers. But Gramma had plenty of scarves and a huge rose garden. Chris thought about books, pillows and photo albums. A diary? She had one. An umbrella? She had that too. A radio? There is one in her kitchen. Oh, what would Chris and Jamie do? They spent all week thinking.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.

Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, "This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift."

Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.

Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (—角硬币).

Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.

He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying, "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you." As Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

He met her at a party. She was so outstanding, with many boys around her, while he was so ordinary, with nobody paying attention to him.

At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him. She was surprised, but out of politeness, she agreed.

They sat in a nice coffee shop. He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable, thinking, "Please let me go home."

Suddenly he asked the waiter, "Would you please give me some salt? I'd like to put it in my coffee."

Everybody stared at him. So strange! His face turned red, but, still, he put the salt in his coffee and drank it.

She asked him curiously, "Why do you have this hobby?"

He replied, "When I was a little boy, I was living near the sea. I liked playing in the sea, and I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood. I miss so much my hometown and my parents who are still living there."

While saying that he couldn't hold back his tears. She was deeply touched. That's his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart. A man who can speak out his homesickness must be a man who loves home, cares about home, and has responsibility for his family.

Then she also started to speak about her faraway hometown, her childhood, and her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.

They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who met all her demands: he was kind-hearted, warm and careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him.

Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story went on just like every beautiful love story: the princess married the prince, and then they were living in happiness…And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee.

On Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing with his father at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. They had a wonderful day and decided to drive home to Massachusetts after a final run. They took a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where they split up to go down in different trails. When the father finished his run, he headed to the parking lot to wait for his son. However, Nicholas never showed up.

It turned out that a fierce snowstorm had swept into the area as Nicholas was on his way down. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path and ventured down the west side of the mountain. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost and all alone. His way back to the ski trails was blocked. What's worse, he didn't have any food or water with him, let alone his cell phone or other supplies. The sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute.

Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about Bear Grylls'survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch on TV. In the show, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to help himself out. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop moving around. He needed the energy, and the winds weren't as strong in the valley where he stood as they were up on the mountain. Plus, there was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the freezing wind and snow. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.

When evening came, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate some snow and drank some water from nearby stream so that he wouldn't dehydrate (脱水). Then he returned to his cave and slept.

Paragraph 1:

When Nicholas didn't show up, his father realized there must be something wrong.

Paragraph 2:

The next day, Nicholas heard the sound of a snowmobile.

Everyone in our neighborhood knew who Ugly was. Ugly was a wild cat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. All these things had their effect onUgly. He had only one eye and where the other should have been was a hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot broke at one time, making him look like he was always turning the comer. Every time some one saw Ugly there was the same reaction. "That's one UGLY cat!"

All the children were warned not totouchhim, the adults threw rocks at him, shouted at him, watered him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you watered him, he would stand there, getting wet all over until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at him, he would lie down crying for forgive ness. Whenever he saw children, he would come running, meowing, and bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If you ever picked him up he would immediately suck (吮吸) on your shirt, hat, whatever he could find.

One day Ugly shared hislovewith the neighbor's dogs. They did not respond kindly, and Ugly was badly injured. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was lying, it was obvious Ugly's life was almost at an end. Ugly lay in a wet circle. He was bleeding badly. As I picked him up in myarmsand tried to carry him home, I could hear him crying and could feel himstruggling. It must be hurting terribly, I thought.

Then I felt a familiar sucking on my ear. Ugly, in so muchpain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to suck my ear. I pulled him closer to me, and he bumped my hand with his head, then he turned his one golden eye towards me. Even in the greatest pain, that ugly cat was asking only for a little love.

Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a mere acquaintance. I have forgotten the name of the old lady, who was a customer on the paper route in my hometown when I was a twelve-year-old boy. Yet it seems like just yesterday that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness which I shall never forget.

On a Saturday afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the roof of the old lady's house. The object of our play was to observe how the stones changed to missiles (导弹) as they rolled to the edge of the roof and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky.

I found myself a perfectly smooth stone and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window on the old lady's back porch (走廊). At the sound of broken glass, we knew we were in trouble and ran away.

I was too scared about getting caught that I was concerned about the old lady with the broken window all the time that night. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to look into her eyes.

I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.

Misha had a two-year-old dog called Gandalf, a search and rescue dog. Misha had trained him for a year with South Carolina Search and Rescue Dog Association.

Misha would train Gandalf whenever she had time. She would give him something like a shoe to smell, then hide it and say to him, "Find, boy!" Hearing this, Gandalf would race off. Soon he would turn up with the very object in his mouth, looking up at her and wagging(摆动)his tail happily. Misha was sure that together, they two would make a brilliant team.

Last Sunday, a 12-year-old boy Michael disappeared from his group's campsite in Doughton Park, 7000 rough acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. A massive search had been launched, but for 3 days there was barely a track of the boy. The rescue teams were about to lose hope when Misha and Gandalf stepped in.

But this was their first real job. Gandalf would have to pick up the missing boy's smell in the air after three days, a challenging task for even the sharpest animal.

Misha gathered her team of six other members, and they headed north. A sister team had been searching the woods through the night. Misha's team would take over later that rainy morning.

All the searchers found were some dropped potato chips west of Michael's campsite. They'd obtained an unwashed T-shirt from Michael's backpack that hadn't been touched by anyone else and handled it with gloves, carefully cutting it into smaller pieces and sealing(密封) them up in plastic bags.

At 8 a.m. Misha's team were briefed on every detail about Michael. Misha carefully studied his picture to lock his image in her mind. She pulled a bright yellow jacket over Gandalf's head. It had large letters on each side saying "RESCUE", which made Gandalf look like a solider.

Paragraph 1

Then Misha opened a bag containing the pieces of Michael's shirt.

The rescue team were about to stop when Gandalf suddenly slowed down nearby a ruined castle (城堡)

With two full bags of cat food in her arms, Lila couldn't stop smiling as she walked toward the familiar shop on the corner. She was making her weekly visit to see Hussein, the barber. He spotted her through the picture window of his quiet shop and burst through the door into the sunlight, stretching his arms wide with a Turkish greeting. The two hurried over to the tiny food dishes lined up in the street corner and soon several cats began to appear.

Hussein took most of his spare time in the street, patting each cat and speaking softly. Lila had been leading a volunteer animal rescue program in Turkey for the last three years and often reported relevant stories on her website.

As the two finished up and made their way back, Hussein's smile faded and Lila noticed he was beginning to look rather thin, so she asked him what was the matter. Hesitating for a while, Hussein said, "I am afraid I will lose this barbershop." Days before, Hussein was told that he must close the shop in two weeks. The landlord thought he couldn't pay enough rent and invited another tenant (租户), one who wouldn't feed cats outside all the time, but focus more on his business.

"As for me, I can find a job to earn a living. What I'm really worried about are the cats. Closing this shop, I won't have enough time and money to take care of them." Hussein sighed deeply. Lila's eyes began to flood as Hussein expressed his worry. "Haven't you thought about opening a new barbershop?" Lila asked. "But the storefronts (门头房) nearby are too expensive and the ones far away are not available for me to take care of the cats." Hussein said helplessly.

There were only seven days before Hussein left the shop. Lila feared for his very survival and for that of the animals who depended on him. She realized that she should do something.

Rose's front doorbell rang loudly. She lived alone but she liked company now and again. She didn't like it if she missed visitors. That happened a lot in the past when her doorbell was too quiet. But everything was fine now, thanks to Mr. Banks, Gus's dad. He put in a louder doorbell for her, which made all the difference. He was always doing odd jobs for her when she needed help. But now poor Mr. Banks was gone.

It seemed so unfair for a nice man like him to die at forty so young! With a wife and two children to support, too! Poor Mrs. Banks.

Rose opened her door. It was Gus Banks, standing there with a big smile and a bag of potatoes. "Mum sent me with these," he said. "She said to tell you the jam was lovely. We tried some jam from the farmers' market but it's not as good as yours, Rose."

"That's nice of her to say so, dear. I'd love to give you some more but I haven't got any," Rose said sadly. She could see that Gus was disappointed, though he was trying hard not to show it.

She continued. "But there are always some blackberries growing in the field at this time of year. If you pick some for me, I'll show you how I make the jam and then you can make it yourself!"

Gus opened his mouth in surprise. "What, me? I can't make jam! And even if I did, it could never be as good as your jam, Rose!"

Rose laughed and smiled. "Don't be silly, Gus. I'll show you. There's nothing to it once you know how."

"Really?"

"Yes, love."

"See you tomorrow, Rose." said Gus, as he put the potatoes down in Rose's hallway.

Sam spoke with a stammer (口吃). Despite his condition, he was an outgoing boy and was never afraid to try new things. He strongly believed that where there is a will, there is a way.

Finally, the day for him to attend primary school arrived. He was a little worried and afraid but he did not let his feelings affect his positive learning attitude. As he entered the school gate of Flora Primary School, the noisy school campus greeted him. Students in the canteen were either enjoying the delicious food or talking happily.

Soon, the school bell rang and it was time for the students to return to their own classes. On Sam's way back to class, he met the principal, Mr. Teo. "Have a great first day in school, Sam! I am sure you will have lots of fun here, " wished Mr. Teo.

He gave Sam a warm hug. The hug was all Sam needed to calm himself down as he felt he was ready to face the other students belonging to the same class as him.

In no time, the students of Sam's class were back in their seats. Sam was asked to introduce himself. " Bu.…  but Mrs. Ta. . Tan, I spe… speak wi…  with a stam… stammer. The oth… other pup… pupils will defin… definitely ma… make fu. . fun of m…  me, " Sam stammered as panic and worry began to set in him. "I'm sure they will understand your condition. Just go ahead and take your time, " Mrs. Tan gave him a smile.

It was terrifying. Forty pairs of eyes were glued onto him when he began his speech. "Calm down Sam, calm down, " a voice broke out, Phew! It was just Mrs. Tan.

"Ha ha! Ha ha! Big baby Sam needs a teacher to calm him down and speaks with such a funny stammer. He should go back to preschool and learn how to speak, " a few boys who were a little too tall for their age started to make fun of him. Upon hearing that, the entire class except Tom started to laugh,

Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It's true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn't turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today — A lesson about the value of efforts.

My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don't know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids did, we'd hear something like, "I don't care what so-and-so got for his birthday, you are not getting a TV in your room or a big party." We had to earn our allowance(零用钱) by doing chores(家务) around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced.

It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed — and there it was in the window — white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers. The basket winked at me and I knew — I knew — l had to have it.

"It's beautiful," my mother said when I pointed it out to her, "What a neat basket."

I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn't stand it any longer. "Mom, please can I get it? I'll do extra chores for as long as you say. I'll do anything, but I love that basket. Please, Mom, please? "I was desperate.

"You know," she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, "If you save up you could buy this yourself."

"By the time I earn enough it'll be gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?"

"There might be another way," she said.

Being the only deaf boy in the class meant Alex always had to sit in the front row directly in front of his sign language interpreter, Ms. Barringer. He hated sitting in the front row. He'd rather be able to see everyone and everything, not just Ms. Barringer and the chalkboard. In fact, having to sit in the front was the only thing he didn't like about his new school.

This morning he felt particularly uncomfortable. A few minutes earlier, he had swallowed water at the fountain. Now he felt a straining (一阵拉紧) in his stomach as a bubble (气泡) of wind rose into his throat.

He glanced behind him. Ms. Barringer waved to get his attention and then pointed to his half-finished composition to let him know he should be writing and not looking around the room. Alex tightened his chest muscles to hold back the burp (打嗝) as his mother told him it made an offensive noise. However, he remembered the day before, in the crowded hall, he had burped and nobody had even noticed.

Last year, none of this had mattered. A few of his friends' parents at the Lakeside School for the Deaf had warned that he might find going to a hearing school too hard. But Alex wanted to be like his older brother, which meant attending Wilson Middle School. He had told everyone he wasn't afraid, but now that he was here, he found that fitting in wasn't easy. It was the fourth day of school, and he was still eating lunch by himself.

No longer able to hold back the burp, he covered his mouth in case there was a sound and let the burp go. Every kid looked up and stared at him. Ms. Barringer shook her head as if to say, "Oh, Alex, you've done it now." When he saw that Brian, the boy next to him, was laughing, he felt his face burning.

Many people would feel surprised when they know I don't use a credit card. In fact, I did have a credit card. If it hadn't been for an embarrassing moment in a drugstore, I maybe still use one. But ever since then, I have formed a habit of keeping a record of the money I spent. And it was also from that moment that I learn to save.

It was about 8 years ago when I was staring out in my human resources career. One day I ran into a drugstore before work to buy some medicine. After J picked up the medicine that I wanted, I walked to wards the register and handed the cashier my credit card. She swiped. DECLINED, the register said. Of course I assumed it was a mistake. She swiped again. DECLINED. At this moment, my heart sank and panic soon set in. If any of you have ever experienced that you know that it's the worst feeling.

I was confused. I had just been paid a few days before, how could this be? I immediately walked over to my bank, which, thankfully, wasn't far away. The 5 minutes I had to wait were painful. When the clerk looked at my account the only information she was able to give me was the phone number of the lawyer who had requested the lien(扣押)on my account. I had no idea what alien was but when I finally did speak to the lawyer and asked what was going on, he told me, "They are from your school, St. John's University." I was even more confused. I didn't owe the school any money. I owed a small Fortune in student loans but those were being paid through Ed Financial. He, very rudely, told me that they were for parking tickets. Yes. I had owed about $3,000 in parking tickets that I somehow forgot about and somehow thought they would disappear. Well, here they were, five years later, holding me firmly.

It took me a long summer to pay that debt off. But when I finished paying it off, I felt I must work hard to pay off everything else.

"I don't want to go." Maria moved her feet slightly and hung her shoulders. Mom continued packing a bag." We're going to Uncle Rich's in Montana for summer vacation. He's your father's brother, and we go there every year."

Maria stormed out of her mom's room and said angrily, "Nobody ever thinks of me!" "That's enough. We're going." replied Mom angrily, too.

Their August vacation came sooner than Maria wanted. Before she knew it, she and the family were at Uncle Rich's farm. Uncle Rich grabbed her dad and hugged him. Maria grabbed her bag, "I'm going to my room."

"Wait a minute, Maria," said Uncle Rich. "I have got something to show you."  At the barn (牲口棚) Maria saw the horse. It was of medium size. It had a fine, soft black coat and one white foot. There was a wide white patch (斑) that ran down the center of its face. Maria fell in love with it at first sight. "Wow! What a horse!"

"He's a mustang," said Uncle Rich. "Mustangs are free horses who live in the wild. We found him stuck in the mud down by the river. My friend and I roped him and managed to get him out."

Maria kicked the dirt. "Can I help care for him?"  Then she felt her heart beating in expectation.

Uncle Rich laughed. "You bet. The more hands we have, the better. Just don't get too attached. Once we're sure he's okay, we will have to set him free. Mustangs went from over a million at the beginning of the 20th century to less than 17,000 in 1970. They were hunted illegally for meat."

Peter, a 5-year-old boy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister, Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shinning on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling(闪烁) in the sky. As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming(绽放) in gentle wind.

One day, Peter was wandering through market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging(落后) behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest.

The boy went back to her and asked, "What do you want?" Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face. Peter held his younger sister's tiny hand, walking into the shop. He tiptoed(踮起脚尖) to reach for the doll, and like a responsible elder brother, gave the precious doll to Shirley. Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very very happy.

The shopkeeper was watching everything and getting amused to see the matured(成熟的) behavior of the boy. Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, "How much does this doll cost, Sir?"

The shopkeeper was a cool man, who had suffered from something in his life. So he asked the boy with love and affection, "Well, what can you pay?" Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little guys' breakfast. Having counted the money, Peter put it carefully on the counter, asking again, "Sir, is it enough for my little sister's doll?"

The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile on his face. Shaking his head slightly, he replied, "My boy, I am afraid it seems not to be enough."

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Rubbish lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the rubbish that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash bins away and the remaining one never got emptied often.

As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.

The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.

Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. "This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours," said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.

Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the rubbish down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

The Subway Trail was named for its tunnel-shaped canyon (大峡谷). The hike there was described as "very tough", requiring "route finding, stream crossing, and climbing over big rocks". Nevertheless, I still decided to explore it with my friend, Jessika.

It was sunny when we set out from the trailhead (登山口) at 8 am. Halfway through our ten-mile hike, a light snow began to fall. Soon after, we entered the Subway. Standing in our way was a small pond. Because it looked shallow, we began to walk through.

However, about 1. 5 metres from the edge, my front foot suddenly sank into the sandy bottom. Then I fell forward, and both legs started to sink. The mud came all the way up to both of my legs. I freed my left leg but I couldn't move my right leg at all. Jessika handed me a long stick we'd picked up earlier. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to pull my leg out but failed. Jessika started removing sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. "Stop!" I shouted. "It's quicksand! You're wasting your energy. "Though the sinking stopped, it seemed impossible to get out.

The only phone reception was back at the trailhead, five hours away over rough areas. I told Jessika she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared—she'd only ever hiked with me and was afraid of hiking alone on such a difficult trail. But we were out of options.

Thirty minutes after she left, it started to snow heavily. I zipped up my jacket and pulled my head inside. Suddenly I fell backward. I urgently planted my stick into the dry ground and pulled myself upright. I was extremely tired. It had been about five hours since Jessika left, and it was getting dark.
