Some people believe that people from the same country share similar (相似的) characteristics. This is why you might hear someone saying "She is typical(典型的) Australian" or "He is so French". Here are some examples.
French
French people are romantic and outgoing. They have great love for life, food and wine. They are good at singing and dancing.
Chinese
Chinese are friendly and hard-working people. They are polite because they are careful about "saving face" when they are with other people.
Australians
Australians are happy people. They spend a lot of time outdoors. They enjoy a slower life. They laugh a lot but sometimes people think they are loud and rude.
Germans
Germans are often serious and careful. They are hard workers and do everything carefully. However, sometimes people say Germans have no sense of humour.
All these national types can be true for some people, but very wrong for others. For example, you might meet a German who is a confident singer with a great sense of humour, or an Australian who is shy and quiet!

China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: The way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual.
Also, you can buy a small amount(数量) of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shopkeepers even help you peel( 去 皮 ) and cut them. But shopkeepers in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes. The difference could be due to the different weather.
Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of keeping food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.
There are 56 ethnic (民族的) groups in China, including the Han people who make up 90% of the total population. Each group has its own culture and traditions. Some ethnic groups speak their own languages and have their own style of dress too.
Mongolians live in northern China. They are known for travelling on horses and camels (骆驼). They eat a lot of meat and drink salty tea. Mongolians have many skills, especially they are very good at hunting (狩猎) and horse racing.
Tibetans live in very high mountainous areas in southwestern China. Tibetans have a special tradition of presenting Hada, a long piece of silk, to their dear friends or beloved ones.
The Uygur live in northwestern China. They live in "the Land of Fruit". It's known worldwide for its production of grapes and the Hami melons (哈密瓜).
The Hui people live in more central China, to the north. They practise Islam (伊斯兰教), and many of them are direct descendants (后代) of Silk Road travellers.
The Manchu people live in northeastern China. They took control of the central plain (平原) of China in 1644 and ruled the country for over 200 years until 1911.
There are other important ethnic groups, including the Zhuang, the Yi, the Miao and so on. Most of them are very musical and known for songs and dances.
We often think the Arctic(北极) only has snow and ice. But in fact, it has far more than that! The Arctic is on top of Earth. The Arctic Ocean makes up two-thirds of the Arctic, while made up of land in eight countries, including Russia, Canada, and the US.
The Arctic lands nave many various lives. Some plants and animals can grow in very cold temperatures. In fact, the Arctic is home to more than 21,000 kinds of lives. There are whales. Arctic foxes and many more. The polar bear (北极熊) is the most famous Arctic animal.
You might think that the Arctic is too cold for people to live in. But surprisingly, there are about 4 million people living there. That's the same population as the city of Taiyuan in Shanxi, China. About 10 percent are local people. They have been there for thousands of years. They make a living by fishing, hunting (打猎) and so on.
A group of scientists recently came back from a one-year-long study in the Arctic. They have bad news: the Arctic is dying. The amount of Arctic sea ice is falling by around 3 percent every year. There will be no more ice during the summer in the near future. What does this mean for us? Many animals, such as polar bears, hunt for their food on the ice. lf they can't do this anymore, they will die of hunger. Local people hunt animals for food. But since so many animals are dying, they need to change their way of life.
