It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don't be late for supper, "Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!" "OK!" my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

The relationship between parents and teachers is important in the development of a child. The good communication between them is communication that says, "I care about my child, and I value school." The best way a parent can show how much he or she values learning is by sending a prepared child to school every day. Once a child gets behind in class, catching up can be difficult.
Parents and teachers are partners in student development. A school community is built on relationships established (建立) among children, teachers, and children's families.
Here are tips for creating a positive relationship with your child's teacher.
Meet with your child's teacher in the fall. —his or her special needs, outside activities, health, and home study habits.
Look for the positive. Share with your child's teacher something you particularly appreciated regarding the teacher something you particularly appreciated regarding the teacher's role in the academic and /or social development of your child.
Let the teacher know that you want to support the work that is being done in class. Ask for suggestions for expanding school activities into home activities.
You can send a note of thanks when something special takes place in the classroom and your child is involved.
Be willing to participate in or set up a conference when you or your child's teacher feels a special meeting is needed, such as:
Your child seems to be deeply upset about something that happened at school.
A. When a child is absent from school, important lessons may be missed.
B. Phone your child's teacher if necessary.
C. The teachers need to feel appreciated for the job they do.
D. This is a good time for the teacher to learn more about your child.
E. Express your appreciation to the teacher.
F. The beginning of every term is very important.
G. There is an obvious drop in your child's grades.

It was late spring when my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose fragrance (香气) filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. My mom went out of the car, grabbing (抓住) the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.
Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked at the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, "Do you know someone there?" She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers?" She smiled slightly, "I gave them to the receptionist (接待员)."
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, "Did you leave your name?" She answered, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate (欣赏) them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me."
Suddenly I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passers-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling,or swimming,or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion of climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably,by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules,as there are for such games as golf and football. There are,of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from manmade rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”.We should be mistaken in this. There are,it is true,no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man.He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve his skills year by year.A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men,but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
When you were a little kid, your parents took care of your health matters like scheduling your doctors' appointments (约见) and making sure you took your medicine. You may be worried about things like weight, stress, and even suicidal (自杀的) thoughts. It's important to find someone who is both knowledgeable and dependable to get help. That's where your doctor can help.
It's perfectly normal to feel nervous when talking with your doctor about these personal and private things. You should be able to tell your doctor about everything. So here are tips for you to make it easier:
Your doctor has seen it before. Most doctors have cared for hundreds or even thousands of patients. No matter how troubling something might be to you, it probably won't surprise your doctor.
Your doctor is there to help, not judge (批评) or punish you. Your doctor is interested in keeping you healthy, not judging you for something you have or haven't done. If you think your doctor makes you uncomfortable, turn to another doctor.
A doctor can't help you unless you tell the whole story. Even if you're uncomfortable, being open and honest will only do good to you. Most doctors realize that people can feel uncomfortable about raising personal problems, and they try to be good listeners.
A. But that's easier said than done.
B. So who can you talk to about your worries?
C. It's your job to talk openly about your worries.
D. So they've heard and seen just about everything before.
E. Many parents are happy to see their teens care about themselves.
F. As you get older, the health matters you face can get more personal.
G. A doctor's role is to listen, examine, educate, and treat people, not punish them.
A few years ago, I moved to a window office and sent an email letting everyone know. In the email, I jokingly invited everyone to come by for a "tour" of the new space.
I was in a meeting that morning and when I got back to my office, I saw a box on my desk. There was a note on it, saying, "Happy new office!" The person didn't sign it. I was so happy with that. I didn't feel like I should help anyone or that someone was trying to get something from me. In fact, I found myself thanking everyone in the office. It was completely different from what I did on the beach the other day.
The water was coming in. Two nice chairs were about to be taken out by the waves. The owners were nowhere to be seen, so I moved the chairs again and again as the waves rose. When the couple who owned the chairs showed up, I couldn't help myself. I went over, pointed to the waves, and said, "A couple of hours ago, your chairs were out there."
"Oh, thanks so much for pulling them in," said the guy. "We just realized they were out here and thought they had probably gotten washed away."
"Don't worry about it," I said, as I walked away. Then these words came to my mind, "You have your reward (回报)."
Then I realized when I went over to the couple, I was looking for something. If they hadn't shown anything after I told what I had done, it would have upset me. In our life, people who show their good deeds (行为) are always looking for a reward and they resent those who don't celebrate their generosity (慷慨).
However, when we experience the pleasure of giving without letting the other know, we do more than show kindness. We're just giving to communicate an invaluable message, "You're loved. You're important to someone and it has nothing to do with what you can give in return."

Tom Brady, a Californian, was an excellent quarterback (四分卫) at Junipero Serra High School. But when he arrived at the University of Michigan, he didn't see much playing time during his first three years on campus. He considered going back to a college in California, but he decided to stick it out. He didn't become a starter until the second half of his senior year. After becoming a National Football League (NFL) player, he was not allowed to play as a starter. However, he kept improving his skills and preparing each week like he was the starter.
In 2001, his second season, he only got in on the act because the starter was injured. Fans thought Tom would be just a fill-in. But Tom led his team New England Patriots to a victory in his first start, then they won four of five, and then finished the year with six victories. Each week he seemed to get a little better, and people began to recognize him as a dark horse. New England Patriots got into the Super Bowl, fighting against the defending ( 卫冕的) champions St. Louis Rams. Tom led a final-minute game-winning drive. He was no longer a nobody.
Today, Brady is considered perhaps the greatest quarterback ever. He'd become a superstar. Yet he had never lost that fire, that drive, and that sense that the world didn't believe in him. At 37, he said that he would play until fifty if his body allowed him to do so. And he even told his teammates that he wanted to play forever if possible.
His teammates had dreamed of being him. Hogan was thirteen in February of 2002 when Brady and New England Patriots beat St. Louis Rams. Lengel was eleven at the time, watching with his grandfather in Kentucky. White was ten in Florida. Mitchell was nine in Georgia. These teammates were Tom's big fans who since childhood had viewed from TV how he did the impossible. "He gave us the encouragement," Hogan said.
He kept telling his teammates to keep going when the game wasn't over. He isn't the biggest, the fastest, and the strongest football player in the world. But he may be the most strong-minded.
