When a friend is sad about the loss of a loved one, it's easy to feel helpless. We often try to cheer friends up, or let them know that they should try to move on. So here are some useful ways to help you support your friends in time of need.
◆ Most people suffering a loss will go through these stages, often in no particular order: denial (不肯相信), bargaining, anger, depression (沮丧) and acceptance. Each one is healthy and necessary. The more familiar you are with these stages, the better you'll be to support your friends.
◆Don't always tell them how strong they are. We are often ready to praise the person who appears to be dealing strongly with a loss.
◆Ask them what they need. It's normal that you cannot guess what your friends need. If they say "I don't know" or "nothing", don't walk away or worry. Just offer your support in whatever way you can. And let them know that you will be there when they think of something.
◆Finally, keep in mind that loss is not just felt through death. Loss is a difficult thing to work through. And your role as a supporter is very important and helpful.
A. Comfort those who suffer a lot.
B. Recognize the stages of sadness.
C. It can be the loss of a job, the loss of hope.
D. Your care will be appreciated (感激) and provides much comfort.
E. But those efforts often put pressure on them and leave them feeling useless.
F. The problem is that we need to allow them to be human and weak sometimes too.
G. Because we're all different, it's best to ask them what it is that you can do for them.
My wife Lynn was beginning her third day on an oxygen mask (氧气面罩). "She must 1 in the next twenty-four hours, or you will probably leave her here," the doctor said to me. Those 2 words had me near the breaking point. However, I didn't want to 3.
Suddenly, a (n) 4 hit me. Then I headed to the nurse station. There I got a piece of 5. I wrote, "Keep Hope Alive! Miracle (奇迹) in Progress!" Then I 6 to Lynn's room and put it up on the 7, hoping somehow that those words would bring a miracle. 8, there was not any sign of 9. In the afternoon, the shift changed and a 10 who I had not seen before came in. She had a soft smile and a caring manner. "I'll be helping Lynn tonight," she said. She 11 cleaned her face and body. After finishing her work, she was ready to 12, but she stopped when she noticed the 13 on the wall. She said to me, "Don't 14, sir! I believe she will be fine. You know, my name is Tammy Miracle." It was 15. What were the chances of a nurse named Tammy Miracle being sent to Lynn on a day when I had put up a sign 16 a miracle?
The next morning, Lynn awoke. I couldn't help 17. The other day, I was further surprised to 18 that Tammy Miracle had been called in from another department because of a shortage of ICU nurses. I was 19 that Tammy Miracle was sent to us. So if you 20 hope, try to believe that a miracle may be waiting for you, too.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps older people company and helps them remember to take their medicine. That is the shared dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The researchers received a $ 3-million-dollar from the National Science Foundation for a special project. They want to find ways to add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro's "Joy for All" robotic cat.
The cat has already been for sale for two years. Though priced at over 1 000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a "companion" (陪伴) for older people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat. Researchers are working to decide which activities older adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost objects and reminding the older people to take medicine or visit their doctor. They also want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed (有吸引力) to Jeanne Elliot. Her 93-year-old mother Mary Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia (痴呆). The Joy for All cat that Elliot bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays with Derr and keeps her relaxed while Elliot is at work. Elliot said a robotic cat that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she walks would be greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they hope to create an exchange between the human and the cat in which the human feels the cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
I stopped at a local store the other day after a fitness class to buy some food. After I got the food, I got in 1 behind a lady who looked about twenty years old. She had quite a lot of things in her shopping basket. She 2 her credit card to the shop assistant but the shop assistant told her it had been refused. The young lady 3 she had paid it off the day before. The shop assistant replied, "Maybe it hasn't got through the system yet. Do you want to 4 someone?" The young lady 5 her cellphone and was looking through it. 6, they opened another counter (柜台) to let me 7 out.
I was walking out to my 8 when I thought, "Okay! You're 9 wishing you could help someone. Now it is 10 for you to do it!" Immediately, I made a 11 to help her. I got out of my car and 12 with my bank card in my hand. The young lady was still looking through her phone. She looked a little 13. I returned to the counter, handed my 14 to the shop assistant and said, "I will pay her bill." She 15 her head and took the card.
As the shop assistant 16 the card to me, the lady was still 17 her phone. And I didn't think she had even 18 what had happened! I told her that I had paid her bill and then I left before she expressed her 19 to me.
The bill was about $ 52. However, the feeling inside me was 20! I realized that helping others did make me happy.

I love training with my husband Chris. We do our own exercises separately, but then we really enjoy spending 30-40 minutes doing something we both like together. I also train with my family — my brother, his wife and our cousins will come to our house every now and then to train together. It's like family fun time! A little bit of competition also makes us work out harder.
Laziness, as you know, is contagious ( 有传染性的). But so is enthusiasm. If you can get your partner on board, you will be able to encourage each other on those days when the other doesn't feel like moving. If you set yourself a challenge and add competition to the mix, I promise you that the training will be much more fun. Time will fly by and you'll want to do it again.
This is why I wanted to learn Chris' favourite sport — surfing (冲浪). Not only would we have more things to do together, but it would be a great challenge for me. In turn, I have introduced Chris to two of my favourite activities: horse riding and motorbiking. Now he also loves them, which means we have even more chances to have fun together. Encouraged by our example, my brother and his wife now train together too. This is what it's all about at the end of the day: quality time with your partner.
What if you don't have a partner? Well, I'm sure you have a friend who would love to train with you. Or, if you have young children, why not train in the backyard with another parent while they play? You just need some music. The important thing is to have a plan and to make the time to do it. It will be much more fun than doing it on your own.
We hear endlessly how good exercise is for our health, but you might be (surprise) to know how good.
Helping you breathe better
Frequent exercise increases the volume of oxygen moving through your body. This is makes you fit. Increased muscle tone helps too. Pilates (普拉提) can build core (strong) and improve posture, and so tone breathing muscles.
Enhancing your mental health
Doing something active releases "happy" brain (chemical), such as endorphins and serotonin, which make you feel more positive. The more you do it, the better you'll feel. But you do need (work) up a bit of a sweat. If you've had a bad day, a little bit of exercise is a brilliant stress reliever.
Keeping you young
There may not be an elixir (长生不老药) of youth, but keeping fit (come) close. Just 15 minutes of exercise a day for eight years can increase your lifespan three years. The more you do, the (long) you could live, according to a study from Harvard Medical School. seems that physical activity delays cell ageing and reduces inflammation (炎症), benefits the heart. It can be low-intensity exercise — swimming or a long walk on a treadmill (踏车) at the gym.
