Yesterday my friend Julia and me had lunch in the Pizza Hut behind our school. I knew Julia wasn't crazy about pizzas, but she came along just because me. At the table next to ours, there were two guys from our class. One of them was real funny. He tried to imitate all the customer in the Pizza Hut. We couldn't stop to laughing. And there were some people whom did not like the fact that two boys were imitating them. They complained to an owner of the Pizza Hut, so he came over and tell them to stop. Seeing it, Julia and I was greatly embarrassed.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before. But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.  Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes.

For anything you're about to send: ask yourself," Would I say this to the person's face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能)is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.  If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or all unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn't give you a license to correct everyone else.  At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those who you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.

A. Everyone was new to the network once.

B. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

C. It's natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

D. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face.

E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

F. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

Experiments under way in several labs aim to create beneficial types of genetically modified foods, including starchier potatoes and caffeine-free coffee beans. Genetic engineers are even trying to transfer genes from a cold-winter fish to make a frost-resistant tomato.

A low-sugar GM strawberry now in the works might one day allow people with health problems such as diabetes (糖尿病) to enjoy the little delicious red fruits again. GM beans and grains rich in protein(蛋白质) might help people at risk of developing kwashiorkor. Kwashiorkor, a disease caused by severe lack of protein, is common in parts of the world where there are severe food shortages.

Commenting on GM foods, Jonathon Jones, a British researcher, said: "The future benefits will be enormous(巨大的), and the best is yet to come". To some people, GM foods are no different from unmodified foods. "A tomato is a tomato," said Brian Sansoni, an American food manufacturer.

Critics of GM foods challenge Sansoni's opinion. They worry about the harm that GM crops might do to people, other animals, and plants.

In a recent lab study conducted at Cornell University, scientists tested pollen(花粉) made by BT corn, which makes up one-fourth of the U.S. corn crop. The scientist dropped the pollen onto milkweed, a plant that is the only known food source of a butterfly caterpillar(毛虫). Within four days of feeding on the leaves, almost half of a test group of caterpillars died. "This is a warning bell." said Cornell researcher Linda Raynor.

Some insects that are not killed by GM foods might find themselves made stronger. How so? The insecticides are used on the crops to kill the pests. But GM plants produce a continuous level of insecticide. Insects relying on those crops may develop resistance to the plants and they may also develop a resistance to the insecticide.

At the forum on GM food held last year in Canada. GM crops that have been made resistant to the herbicide might crossbreed with wild plants, creating "superweeds" that could take over whole fields.

So where do you stand? Should GM food be banned in the United States, as they are in parts of Europe? Or do their benefits outweigh(胜过) any of the risks they might carry?

  1. (1) The first three paragraphs try to give the idea that__________

A . GM foods may bring about great benefits to humans. B . GM foods are no different from ordinary ones. C . GM foods may have both benefits and harm. D . GM foods are particularly good to the kwashiorkor patients.

Climate change has been blamed for killer hurricanes, sea level rise, and drought, but a new report suggests the effects of climate change might hit the world's coffee supply. Up to 70 percent of the world's coffee supply could be threatened over the next 66 years, according to a new study by researchers at England's Royal Botanic Gardens.

Nearly 100 percent of the world's Arabica coffee growing regions could become unsuitable for the plant by 2080, according to the study. Beans from Arabica coffee plants account for about 70 percent of the world's coffee, but the plant also has to be grown under strict weather conditions: they grow well at temperatures between 64 and 70 degrees Celsius, and are highly influenced by frost or temperatures higher than 73 degrees Celsius.

With temperatures estimated to increase by between 1. 8 and 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, the fragile plant might become increasingly expensive and difficult to grow, especially in places such as Ethiopia and Kenya. In that worst case, nearly all of the world's native Arabica coffee would die out. Under more conservative(保守的)estimates, about 65 percent of the regions used to grow the coffee would become unsuitable for it. The evidence from coffee farmers and coffee growing regions around the world is that they are already suffering from the influences of increased warming.

Some farmers would likely be able to move their operations to other areas or would be able to overcome climate change with artificial cooling techniques, but wild Arabica is generally considered to be much more suitable for making high-quality coffee.

If Arabica becomes impossible to raise in its native areas, it could do serious damage to the economies of the mainly third-world countries in which it grows. Coffee is the world's most popular drink and is the second most-traded product in the world, behind oil.

  1. (1) What does the passage mainly talk about?
A . Climate change affects people in many ways. B . More and more attention has been paid to climate change. C . The world's coffee supply could be threatened by climate change. D . The growing conditions of Arabica coffee have been improved recently.
  2. (2) What can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3?
A . According to the study, by 2080 nowhere can be suitable for Arabica coffee growing.   B . 65 percent of the world's coffee gets raw materials from Arabica coffee plants. C . Arabica coffee plants will grow well at temperatures lower than 60 degrees Celsius. D . Coffee farmers are the biggest victims of climate change.
  3. (3) In order to solve the problem of Arabica coffee plants, some farmers       .
A . would make efforts to produce high-quality coffee B . would bring in artificial cooling techniques C . would tend to move to some warm places D . would grow more wild Arabica
  4. (4) What is the result if Arabica coffee has less production?
A . Coffee will replace oil to be the first most-traded commodity. B . Coffee is likely to become less popular than before. C . Some countries will suffer great economic losses. D . Farmers will plant other crops instead of coffee.
