If we are asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written it in an account (陈述) of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we don’t have written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the important happenings in their country, but it was often destroyed (破坏) by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a great deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa because they had not learnt to write.
Sometimes, even if the people canno
t write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and those have been sung and acted and told for many generations (代), for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call “remembered history”. Some of it has been written history because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spo
ken stories are often helpful.

A. if there are no written records, there is no history.

D. written records of the past play an
important role in our learning of the human history.

A. the people there did not know how to write
B. there was nothing worth writing down at that time
C. the written records were perhaps destroyed by fire in a war
D. the people there paid no attention to the importance of keeping a record
3. “Remembered history” is considered as valuable only when ______.
A. it proves to right B. people are interested in it
C. it is written down
D. there is no written account
4. The passage suggests (暗示) that we could have learnt much more about our past than we do now if the ancient people had ______.
A. made more songs and dances
B. kept a record of every past event
C. not burnt their written records in wars
D. told the exact stories of the most important happenings

William Blake described the eyes as the “windows of the soul.” Our eyes are the windows through which we see the world around us. Either way, there’s no question that we place great value on our eyes and our eyesight. Surveys have shown that of the five senses, sight is the one that people fear losing the most.
Thinking about the important function of our eyes, we’d give them the best care possible, but sometimes we get too busy or forget to do a few simple things that can keep our eyes healthy.
Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Remember when you were a kid and your mom told you that carrots would improve your eyesight. Well, she might be right. Proper food will keep your eyes strong and healthy.
Give up your daily habits that could seriously injure your eyes. Always wear sunglasses in a sunny day to protect your eyes from ultraviolet ray(紫外线). Rest your eyes every 20 minutes from the computer screen by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15-minute break when working at a computer.
Make sure your eyes do not get injured in the first place. You should try to prevent eye injuries whether you’re playing sports or doing housework. You should also know when to wear safety glasses and what kinds will work best for you.
Last but not least, get your eyes examined regularly. Eye exams can help find some eye diseases. It’s important to find these diseases early on, when they’re easier to treat.

You have tried too hard but you don’t succeed; you’ve made all your efforts but you don’t get the results you want. What should you do? Give up and turn over a new page. Drop it like it’s hot, and run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.
Do you feel surprised? What is wrong with giving up? Oh yes, we all have been trained and asked to work hard to achieve our dreams, and that is a good thing. The problem comes out when all these inspirational quotes (励志名言) start confusing us.
These messages tell people not to give up, but they don’t tell you that it should only apply to (适用于) your true dreams. They tell people to “try and try again” until they succeed, but that amount of effort should only be put toward what people really want in life and they should never give up no matter what life goals they have. The rest is all just there to confuse you, distract (使分心) you, give you a headache and sadness, so don’t let it happen.
If you are really not good at something, give it up and try to do something you like. Once you do something you like, you won’t feel bored and also won’t give it up. You know clearly what you want even the road to success is hard. So you need to know what you’re good at. To find your talent, you need to observe (观察) the things around you and write down the things you’re interested in on your notebook. Then you can search them on the Internet, and know more about them. Asking your parents or friends for help is also a good idea because they can see something you can’t. They can help you know yourself clearly.
Try to discover your talent, your ability and your skills. Find out what you are good at, what makes you happy and then work on it. If you do, no one would have to tell you or inspire you not to give up because when you love something, you keep trying until you get it right and the enthusiasm flows from within. Don’t worry about what people will say or think. It’s your life, so you have to love it and be your own boss.
31.Inspirational quotes are suitable for those who ________.
A.are successful B.have no life goals
C.have true dreams D.never give up
32.Once you find something you like, you won’t ________.
A.achieve your dreams B.feel bored or give up
C.know yourself clearly D.continue it
33.Why can you ask your parents for help to find your talent?
A.They can see something you can’t. B.They are good at everything.
C.They are older than you. D.They know how to help you.
34.The underlined word “enthusiasm” in the passage means?
A.happiness B.curiosity C.ability D.warmth
35.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.We can’t believe everything about inspirational quotes.
B.It’s not a bad thing for us to give up sometimes.
C.Each of us has our own talent and skills.

Look at the sign! “No ________ (swim)”. You can't swim here.
Look at the Earth from space. Why does our planet look so blue? It’s blue because water covers almost three quarters of the Earth’s surface. Water is not just an important part of our planet. It is an important part of our body, too. More than half of our total body weight is water.
Our body loses water whenever we exercise or go to the toilet. That’s why we need to drink plenty of water every day. We drink water. We use it to cook, clean, and carry waste out of our homes. Farmers use it to grow vegetables and crops like rice and corn; factories use it to make products.
Since the 1950s, the amount (数量) of water people use has increased by three times. But the water supply (供应) hasn’t. Scientists worry that soon there won’t be enough water for us, as well as for the animals and plants that share our world. What can we do to help? Use water wisely.
Having enough water isn’t our only problem. We also need it clean .
Right now, ships and factories are putting wastes into seas, rivers and so on. Even chemicals that farmers use are running into rivers and lakes. All this pollution can make the water dangerous to drink. It can also harm fish and other water-living lives.
We must do something to stop pollution. It’s the best way to protect our world’s most valuable natural resource (资源) .

Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from many other drama forms, mostly from the local drama “Huiban”. It was especially popular in south China during the 18th century.
Theatrical ( 戏剧的 ) art forms in many other countries do not have singing, dancing and spoken parts together in one single drama. I'm a virus (病毒) for the common cold. It has been a long time since I infected (感染) humans last time. Today I tried to infect a boy in a primary school all day.
His name is Sam. I waited on his desktop, and when he touched the desk I jumped on his finger. Unluckily, Sam didn't touch his eyes, mouth or nose. Then, right after class, he washed his hands. Now I'm full of soap and sitting in a sink!
Tuesday, January 22nd
This morning I jumped into the nose of Sam's best friend, Bill. Unluckily, the mucus (粘液) in his nose caught me. I thought it was over for me, when suddenly Bill sneezed while he was talking to Sam.
I knew that would send me right into Sam's face! However, Sam quickly gave Bill a tissue, and Bill sneezed into that instead! Infecting people is harder than I imagined.
