Language exchange can be one of the best ways to improve conversation skills. They give people more opportunities to experience the differences between real conversations and classroom learning. However, doing a language exchange without knowing what to expect can sometimes lead to a waste of time.

Here are some tips on how to have a great language exchange.

Ask yourself some important questions

The most important question to ask yourself is why you want to learn a second language. The following chart shows some of the reasons.

Another question to ask yourself is how much time you're willing to spend on this.

Find the right partner

Many websites have hundreds of partners to choose from in the language you want to learn. So how can you limit your search? The first thing you should know is that people who have been active and have a reason to learn the language are likely to be good partners. Another thing to keep in mind is that it is better to find two exchange partners. People lead a busy life, and one person can not be available( 有空的) all the time.

Be clear about your expectations

Once you find a partner, be clear about what your expectations are. Explain to the person how long you'd like the meetings to be and how often you'd like to meet.

Be prepared

Before each meeting, prepare some questions on a topic of your choice. That will give you the chance to look up related (相关的) words as well as think about your own answers. Preparing topics ahead of time will also help you avoid having nothing to say at your meeting .

Don't be picky ( 挑剔的)

You should keep in mind that during meetings the main goal is practising conversations.因此,不要害怕犯错误。And it's important to let your partner speak freely, even if he or she makes mistakes.

If you want to study abroad, where will you live? If you are too young to live by yourself, homestay with a local family may be the best choice for you.

The first time I had a homestay was in 2019. I stayed in a town in America for a week and I lived with the Carlton’s. At that time, Mr. Carlton lived with his wife, his son and his twin daughters. Mr. Carlton drove me to school every morning, and he picked me up in the afternoons. The meals he made for me were delicious and we usually watched a movie after dinner. All experiences left an unforgettable impression on me, even if I didn’t live there for a long time.

I’m now studying in Canada. Another Chinese boy Dave and I live with Mrs. Perger and her son Robert. We are deeply touched by how much they care about us. Last Friday my roommate Dave didn’t come back home at 4 p.m. as usual. Mrs. Perger found it was strange, so she called him, but he didn’t answer the phone. Then she called his teachers and friends, but none of them knew where he was. She began to worry about him and was even about to cry. Luckily, Dave turned out to be fine and got back home at 11 p. m, right before Mrs. Perger called the police.

However, living with a foreign family also has its disadvantage( 缺点 ). The biggest challenge for me is the totally different lifestyle, which took me a long time to get used to( 习惯 ).

Living with a homestay family gives me a lot of new experiences. It teaches we how to communicate better with different people. Moreover, when rent y es and cultures meet together, I see that the sparks( 火花 ) they make are fantastic.
