The best ways to lose weight with walking

Walking regularly is the easiest and least expensive form of exercise. Except for a good pair of walking shoes, no special equipment is needed. It is not necessary to join a gym. You can walk every day with no "rest days" in between. There is nothing to learn; people already know how to walk. There are, however, a few important things to keep in mind when walking to lose weight.

Ways to lose weight by walking

The first way to begin to lose weight by walking is to start walking. The initial goal should be 10,000 steps per day. Using a simple pedometer(计步器) attached to the waistband or on a belt will help you to count your daily steps. Consistency—even 10 minutes 3 times a day at first will produce the immediate results.

It is very important to check with your medical professional before beginning any exercise programme; especially if you are over age 65, have been required sitting or little activity for more than a year, or have been diagnosed with heart disease, pregnancy, high blood pressure, or any other medical conditions.

How to walk to lose weight

A good walking technique will help you achieve the physical or mental energy you need to walk consistently for the amount of time you have set for your goal. Making sure that you are using your large muscles correctly will also help to build your muscles.

Walking regularly can aid in muscle growth and increase the amount of calories you burn throughout the day. Eating a healthy low-fat diet will raise your metabolism(新陈代谢).If paired the calorie burn with the correct diet, it can lead to a better form of weight loss.

A. Limit your "bad" fat intake.

B. Begin a walking programme with suitable physical qualities.

C. For example, take the stairs rather than taking the elevator.

D. It can be done anywhere and anytime, alone or with friends.

E. These two methods will help lead to a safe 1 to 2 pound weight loss per week.

F. Strong muscles burn more calories throughout the day, even when you are not walking.

G. But slowly increasing the time and the distance will encourage your weight-loss efforts.

A Japanese start-up called Ashirase is stepping into the global market with a new navigation (导航) assistance product intended to help people with low vision.

Its new product will feature flexible vibrating (震动) bases around each foot and are put into each shoe, and a small pack that can be removed for charging (充电). Once fitted, the vibrating parts are set along the sensitive nerves on the foot and can send coded walking instructions to the user.

Its present form navigates a route that comes from a smartphone app. It can help clear up distractions by freeing up the attention that is normally needed to either listen to voice directions or check the phone. Visual-damaged users can use their hearing to listen to traffic sounds and signals, like warning beeps at crossings or sidewalks, and use their hands to carry walking sticks or other belongings.

The device is paired with an app through a Bluetooth connection. The app uses information from Google Maps or similar vendors to draw up a walking route to the destination. Based on the destination and how the user is walking, it will send signals to the device that will cause a vibration on the foot.

The device will vibrate at a regular frequency at the front of the foot to let the users know they're on the right track and should keep going straight. It will speed up the vibrations once the user is approaching a turn and needs to stop, and it will vibrate in either the left or right shoe to signal the direction the user needs to turn.

Ashirase's new tech is waterproof and washable. It can be charged at the end of the week to power through seven days of walking, accounting for three active hours each day. And it can be fitted in two types of shoes: sneakers and leather lace-up shoes.

  1. (1) Who can benefit most from this device?
    A . Deaf people. B . Blind people. C . Normal people. D . Poor people.
  2. (2) What is most likely to be needed to make the device work?
    A . A computer. B . Nothing else. C . A mobile phone. D . Both A and C.
  3. (3) How can the user know that he or she is on the right way?
A . By how often the device vibrates. B . By the sound sent by the device. C . By the signals from their mobile phones. D . By how long the device vibrates.
  4. (4) What can we infer from the text?
A . The device can be used for 21 hours a week. B . The device can't be washed or charged. C . The device can only be fitted into sneakers. D . People wearing the device can't hear traffic warnings.

When Gitanjali Rao was 11, she invented equipment that quickly detects(检测) lead in water. She became the youngest ever winner of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

In 2016, the news was full of stories about dangerous drinking water in Flint, Michigan. The water had too much lead in it. Lead is a metal that can cause health problems when people eat or drink it.

There was home test equipment that could detect lead in water. But these tests didn't work very well. They took too long and often gave wrong results. Gitanjali wondered if she could create a test that was quick, easy, and right.

One day, Gitanjali read a news story about using carbon nanotubes(纳米管) to test for poison in the air. The nanotubes were coated with a chemical that stuck to the poison. When the poison stuck, it changed the way electricity flowed through the tubes. Scientists could measure the electric flow to see how much poison was in the air. Gitanjali wondered if she could use the same way to detect lead in water.

She e-mailed a chemistry teacher at her local school. They didn't have a fancy lab, but it was good enough for Gitanjali to test whether her detector could sense lead at all. They started by testing clean water. The electricity meter jumped all over the place. Gitanjali learned how to adjust it. Next they added tiny spoons of lead. After many, many tries—her detector worked.

Then Gitanjali made a phone app so users could use the results instantly on their phones. She entered her idea in a big national competition. When she was picked for the semi-finals, she was assigned an advisor to help her work on her equipment. And—she won!

Gitanjali's next goal is to sell her equipment in stores and make versions that test for different kinds of pollution. She is also very interested in genetics(遗传学).

Genetic engineering, in its broadest definition, means to control a species so that a particular trait is increased in the population. A trait is how an organism (有机体) looks or acts or what it does. Having brown eyes is a trait. Flying in circles is a trait. Climbing trees is a trait.

The earliest forms of genetic engineering occurred on farms. People selected seeds from plants that had more fruit production or tastier leaves than other plants of their types. Then they chose to save the seeds from the best of that group to sow the next year. So, year by year, the farmers produced better and better crops. This type of activity probably has been going on since mankind first settled in villages and began making a life for themselves in one location, about 12,000 years ago!

The same sort of thing would have also happened with animals. For example, people chose to eat the animals that didn't have favorable traits and let the animals with the favorable traits reproduce. It was thousands of years before mankind figured out how plants and animals reproduce themselves. With this knowledge, people could pollinate (授粉) plants by hand or keep a pair of animals together in order to deliberately cause an increase in a favorable trait.

It was only in the last 250 years that scientists began figuring out chromosomes (染色体) and genes and the role they play in the way one generation passes its traits on to the next. And it's only been in the last 30 years that scientists have been able to cut out specific genes from one organism and put them in another. It is this 30-year-old technology that is described by the narrow definition of genetic engineering. Mankind has long been able to have a deliberate impact on the world around him. He now possesses the tools to deliberately impact himself. Some people are afraid of what might be done with that power.

Investing in yourself

Figuring out how to invest your money can be a difficult task. This is something that you will want to learn how to do.

__16__Things that will improve your knowledge, skills or health are all great investments. However, before you start, you need to be clear about what you will gain out of doing all of these things.

You may think investing in yourself means investing in your education. __17__. There are some other things you can do as well as buying a gym membership or learning a new skill.

So what are some specific things you can do? __18__. Reading books can really expand your mind and allow you to learn different skills and gain knowledge. I’m talking about the books where you will actually learn a new skill, not fiction books.

You can also take courses and attend seminars. These programs are taught by people with a high level of knowledge or skill. __19__. Only in this way can you avoid being fooled by some sales presentation.

Moreover, investing in yourself is a safe way to keep your money. Although a savings account is seen as the most secure investment, that isn’t 100% safe. Even if you never experience your bank closing down, the return is little when inflation(通货膨胀) is taken into consideration. __20__. But over time, they will show up in terms of your happiness level as well as your level of success.

A.     This is just one way.

B.     The benefits will stay with you.

C.     If you aren’t a reader, you should start with that.

D.     The more you do this, the more valuable you will be.

E.      Of course, you need to do some research before investing.

F.      The best way to invest your money is to invest it in yourself.

G.     When you invest in yourself, you may not see gains right away.

A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, D.C. Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reflex(反应), I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”

In an instant, I realized what I had done. I judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be. I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re-awakened my belief in humility(谦恭), even though I’d lost it for a moment.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in the U.S. at the age of 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, serious-minded mother. Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other humble jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice (偏见). I remember a time, at age 17 — I worked as a waiter, and I heard a father told his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. I have also witnessed the same treatment of my family and friends, so I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets of Washington, D.C., cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open. By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson.

1. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that _____.

  A. the blind woman needed the money badly

  B. the author would regret his act of prejudice

  C. the author was as poor as the blind woman

  D. the author was a native American

2. According to Paragraph 4, hearing the father’s words, the author was probably _____.

  A. very excited       B. rather hurt     C. deeply moved      D. greatly inspired

3. According to the passage, the author probably agrees that one should _____.

  A. be nice to the disabled                    B. try to experience different kinds of life

  C. think about one’s past as often as possible D. treat others equally with love and respect

4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

  A. Learn from your past              B. How my dream comes true

  C. A priceless lesson in the street           D. A belief that will never change
