Rail passengers are being forced to pay thousands of pounds more in fares as a result of poor advice from the national telephone helpline and individual stations, a consumer organization reveals today. Research by Which? found that in some cases passengers are being charged almost double the cheapest price because of errors made by staff .
Which? asked 25 questions of both station staff and the National Rail Enquiries (NRES) helpline. Only half of the 50 questions were answered correctly. If customers had followed all the advice given ,they would have been £1,263.60 worse off .
Bad advice was given for the cheapest fare for a single journey between London and Grantham. For a ticket bought on the day of travel, both NRES and a King’s Cross station clerk quoted GNER’s £44.50 fare, ignoring a Hull Trains service which leaves 10 minutes earlier and costs just £20.
Some of the most costly misinformation was given for journeys where season tickets should have been recommended. Passengers making a return journey between Swindon and Penzance twice in a week could buy a ticket from one company for £70 which would cover all the travel. But both NRES and station staff quoted £67 for each journey, making £134.However, the NRES website proved to be a much more reliable source of information .
Which ? also checked “the earlier you book, the cheaper the ticket” claims by five companies and found this was not always the case. On some services, prices went up and down at random.
Ithiel Mogridge, 52, gave one example of poor advice :” Last Christmas I found my brother a ticket on the thetrainline.com to travel from Blackburn to Yate. While the direct route was £51, this one involved a change in Newport and cost just £21.I emailed the details to him and his partner. They went to Blackburn station, where the clerk insisted the fare was £51.”
Malcolm Coles, editor of which.co.uk, said :”Staff training needs to be improved. In the meantime, we’ve designed a checklist, available at which.co.uk/ rail advice. “

As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, businesses, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand these lights. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets sage. The problem is that researchers are finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.
Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my town, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attracted meteor shower(流星雨). The area was short of homes, street lights and traffic. If I did that today, I wouldn’t be able to see the meteor shower as well, and I would surely be run over by a car.
Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide pollution. If you’ve ever taken a flight at night, the view is beautiful, but you must remember that all the light you see is wasted electricity. The crew of the space shuttles see an even bigger picture of how extensive the wasted electricity is worldwide.
Additionally, electricity needs to be generated, and the generation of electricity creates pollution by giving off greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.
Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when they crash into highly lighted buildings, as they become puzzled by the light. It has been long known that tiny sea turtle hatchlings become lost and follow lights on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.
Fortunately, light pollution is one of the easiest sources of pollution that can be corrected without a negative effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce your contribution to light pollution.

A. remember the past beauty of the town.
B. stress the advantages of less pollution
C. show the great changes of the town
D. prove the bad effects of light pollution
68. In the passage the author advises people _________.
A. to try to reduce unnecessary light.
B. not to ignore the beauty around.
C. to set proper light for animals
D. not to destroy the animal’s living conditions.
69. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Light pollution is difficult to deal with.
B. Light pollution is a threat to some animals.
C. Light pollution has nothing to do with global warming
D. Astronauts can’t see clearly in space due to light pollution.
70. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph which follows the last paragraph?
A. The author’s contribution to light pollution
B. Other sources of light pollution
C. Ways of reducing light pollution
D. More bad effects of light pollution

Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers, But, according to a new study, we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.
Mothers have long known that their home worked was just heavy as paid work. Now, the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labors, they would earn as much as£172,000 a year.
The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours they are working, to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income £30, 000 more than the Prime Minister earns.
By analyzing the numbers, it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18,it found that ,on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11pm.
To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labor, it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on, including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part-time lawyer, at £48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jibs”, with psychologist(心理学家)a close second.
It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional(情感的)emand as the hardest thing about motherhood.
Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.
The study shoes mothers matter all year long and not just on, Mother’s Day. The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness. Investing(投入)in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.
32.How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?
A.£30,000. B.£142,000. C.£172,000. D.£202,000.
33.The biggest challenge for most mothers is from .
A. emotional demand B. low pay for work C. heavy workload D. lack of training
34.What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A. Mothers’ importance shows in family all year long.
B. The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.
C. Mothers’ devotion to children can hardly be calculated.
D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.
35.What can we conclude from the study?
A. Mothers’ working hours should be largely reduced.
B. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.
C. Mothers’ labor is of a higher value than it is realized.
D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.

Linguistic(语言学的) Puzzles
How did language begin? What was the world's first language? Do all languages come from one, original language? 1 .
In the 4th century BC, the Greek historian Herodotus wrote this account: Psamtik I an Egyptian King, wanted to find out what the oldest language in the world was. 2 .He told his servant to find two newborn babies. When the servant had found them, the king gave them to a shepherd (牧羊人) and said, "Keep these babies with the goats.Take care of them, but do not talk to them.Listen for any words that they say." The king wanted to find out what language the children would speak if they were left alone. He said, "The first words they speak will come from the original language of the world."
_3 . He told the king.who asked his scholars about this word. They told him that the Phiygians, who lived in an area which is now Turkey, called bread "becos." The king said, "Then Phiygian is the oldest language." Today we know that the king's conclusion was wrong. We don't know why the children said "becos".
4 . Scholars discovered that many European and southern Asian languages belonged to the same "family" and that they started from the same parent language, Proto-Indo-European.Linguists think that it had split into several different languages, including Greek and Sanskrit, between 2000 and 1000 BC.Other languages, such as English and Spanish, developed from later splits.
5_ . Two questions that interest linguists are: How does language change? Why does language change? If you like solving mysteries, historical linguistics may be the job for you.
A.Nowadays, we study the origin of language more scientifically
B.He was talking about this problem with his scholars when he had an idea
C.The King was very kind to his servant and his servant remained royal to him
D.Linguists are the scholars who are very interested in categorizing the language families
E.People have been trying to find the answers to these questions for more than 2 ,000 years
F.One day, while the babies were babbling to each other, the shepherd heard them say "becos"
G.Linguists have classified many language families, and they are still trying to categorize others
How to Communicate With a Deaf Person
Communicating with a deaf person doesn’t have to be as difficult as it might seem. The trick is to be patient, straightforward, and to remember that deaf people communicate visually. Before you know it, you’ll forget you were ever worried!
Method 1: Staring Your Conversation
_____16_____You can do this by moving into the person’s field of vision and waving from a polite distance, or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder. If it’s a real emergency, you can also turn the lights off and on quickly.
Position yourself carefully. Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face, and that you’re not standing with your back to a light. ___17___
Fid out how the person prefers to communicate. Some deaf people are better lip-readers than others. Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter. Man interactions between the deaf and the hearing require a combination of these methods. ___18___
Method 2: Communicating through Lip-reading.
Keep your sentences simple and use plain language. ____19____The more complex your phrasing and vocabulary, the more likely your deaf companion is to miss something. Try to avoid using slang or expressions that aren’t widely known.
When someone else is speaking, don’t turn away from the deaf person in your group. ____20____You don’t have to look at the deaf person while someone else is talking, but try to make sure your face is visible.
A. Get the person’s attention.
B. It’s important not talk too quickly.
C. Or, they’ll miss parts of the conversation.
D. If so, it’ll make them feel left out of the conversation.
E. Stand directly in front of the person, at a normal distance.
F. The best way to know which methods are most effective is to ask.
G. Try not to be too difficult when using your words in the beginning.
A man enters a store to buy milk. He walks out of the store with milk. That is all—milk. At the same time, a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. She buys it. But, she also buys chicken and lemons to make dinner that night. She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends and a birthday card for her husband’s niece. And that is the difference between the female and male brains simply explained in a grocery store. Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. Women do many. Doing many things at one time is often called “multi-tasking,” a very popular word these days.
Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. A recent study has confirmed what we have known all along—men and women think differently.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied brain images of 949 people aged from 8 to 22 years old. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or hemisphere. In the female brain, they found more activity and connections between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain is known as the side of “reason”. The right hemisphere is known as the “creative” side.
Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She co-wrote the report. She says when women are asked to do something complicated they might use different parts of the brain. But men generally use just one.
As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. There is a strong connection between the “understanding” and the “action” parts of their brains. Women, however, might include other parts of the brain, like the part connected with “reason” and the part connected with sensitivity when solving a problem. Women take a less direct path to find a solution.
Thanks for your listening. I’m your announcer Anna Matteo.
28. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that women _____________.
A. are more hard-working than men B. are more multi-tasking than men
C. are more careful than men D. go shopping more than men
29. When asked to do something complicated, men __________.
A. only use the “reason” side of the brain B. only use the “creative” side of the brain
C. use different parts of the brain D. use one part of the brain
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Men like doing something difficult. B. Men take a less direct path to find a solution.
C. Women usually deal with a problem indirectly. D. Women brains have more connections on one side.
31. The main purpose of the passage is to tell us ______________.
A. that men and women really do think differently B. who want to go shopping more, men or women
C. why women want to do many things at one time D. that men and women all like to drink milk

The Chinese have a set of proverbs that I feel truly reflects what lifelong learning attributes(特征)are. The following are some explanations of what they mean.
72
In Mandarin(中文), it is pronounced “Huo Dao Lao, Xue Dao Lao”. Learning is an important part of existence. As we live and grow old, we should never stop learning. In every life stage, there are more things to learn. It shouldn’t stop.
There Are No Limits To Learning
In Mandarin, it is pronounced “Xue Wu Zhi Jing”. It means there are no limits to learning. The earlier lifelong learning attribute speaks about continuity. This speaks about no boundaries. You should not limit the fields of what you learn. 73
The Love For Learning Never Tires You
Pronounced “Hao Xue Bu Juan” in Mandarin it is loosely translated, as the love for learning should never tire you. The first two lifelong learning attributes talk about continuous learning and no boundaries. Learning is dynamic. It is ever moving, ever changing. 74 When you have the perseverance for self-cultivation then the rewards are becoming more and more in life.
Only After Learning, Do You Know What You Do Not Know
75 Self-reflection is an important process in self-directed learning. In Mandarin it is pronounced, “Xue Er Hou Zhi Bu Zu”. Translated - it means that only after learning we know what we do not know. This lifelong learning attribute of self-reflection creates a sense of insufficiency and thus generates an inner want to learn.
A. This lifelong learning attribute forces you to self-reflect.
B. Proverbs about life learning and career.
C. Continue to learn in the journey of Life.
D. Therefore, we should never be tired of it.
E. Three Persons Walking One Is Bound To Be My Teacher.
F. In life, if we are to improve ourselves, learning is infinite.
G. Lifelong learning attributes for career advancement.

What looks like an angry old man and lives at the bottom of the ocean? It’s the world’s ugliest animal---the blobfish(水滴鱼).
Its strange skin is shaped by its habitat. It lives 800 meters below the ocean’s surface, a depth where very few other creatures can survive.
Most fishes have a swim bladder(鱼鳔), which is filled with gas and helps them stay afloat. At the depth that the blobfish live, water pressure is 80 times higher than that at higher sea levels and any swim bladder wouldn’t be able to serve its purpose.
The blobfish don’t have a swim bladder because their skin works the same way. It helps them stay afloat without having to use any energy.
The blobfish have a pretty relaxed attitude towards eating. All they do is stay and wait for crabs or lobsters to come by.
Since the blobfish like to eat crabs and lobsters, they often get caught in nets that are used to catch lobsters or crabs and end up dying or being killed. They are not suitable for eating so they are useless for fishermen.
There’s a purpose behind the blobfish’s new title; it has become the new mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, an organization whose purpose is to preserve endangered ugly animals.
“We’ve needed an ugly face for endangered ugly animals for a long time and I’ve been amazed by the public reaction,” said the Society’s Simon Watt. “For too long cute animals have taken the limelight(风头) but now the blobfish will be a voice for those who always get forgotten.”They hope this new face will help the world know that we need to help preserve the populations of ugly animals too.
25.The biggest difference between the blobfish and most other fishes is that the blobfish_____ .
A. cannot be eaten by people
B. don’t have a swim bladder
C. only live at high sea levels
D. aren’t active in catching food
26.What makes the blobfish stay afloat?
A. Their skin. B. Their tail.
C. Their mouth. D. Their swim bladder.
27.We can learn from what Simon Watt said that _____ .
A. most ugly animals are in danger
B. the population of the blobfish is increasing
C. the blobfish have attracted the public’s attention
D. people knew nothing about the blobfish in the past
