"Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise." said DrHans Selye, the first physician to document the effects of stress on the bodyWhile here's no question that continuous stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging situations in which you're able to rise to the occasion can be good for you

In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but coped with (设法处理) the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health than those who felt they couldn't get the job done

Stress that you can manage may also boost immune(免疫的)functionIn a study at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, researchers put volunteers through two stressful experiencesIn the first, a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test, subjects believed they had control over the outcomeIn the second, they weren't in control: They had to sit through a gory(血淋淋的) video on surgical proceduresThose who did go on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that's the body's first line of defense against germs, The video-watchers experienced a downtum in the antibody

Stress prompts the body to produce certain stress hormones(荷尔蒙). In short bursts these hormones have a positive effect, including improved memory function"They can help nerve cells handle information and put it into storage," says DrBruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New YorkBut in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain

"Sustained stress is not good for you," says Richard Morimoto, a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois studying the effects of stress on longevity(长寿), "It's the occasional burst of stress or brief exposure to stress that could be protective"

1The passage is mainly about        .

      Athe benefits ofmanageable stress

       Bhow to avoid stressful situations

Chow to cope with stress effectively

Dthe effects of stress hormones on memory

2The underlined word "shun" Line l, Paral most probably means        .

Acut down on                                       Bstay away from

Crun out of                                           Dput up with

3We can conclude from the study ofthe 158 nurses in 2001 that         .

Apeople under stress tend to have a poor memory

Bpeople who can't get theirjob done experience more stress

Cdoing challenging work may be good for one's health

Dstress will weaken the body's defense against germs

4DrBruce McEwen of Rockefeller University believes that       .

Aa person's memory is determined by the level of hormones in his body

Bstress hormones have lasting positive effects on the brain

Cshort bursts of stress hormones enhance memory function

Da person's memory improves with continued experience of stress

Tips to fight summer weight gain

When we think of summer, most of us think of outdoor fun. So it seems like we should naturally lose weight over the summer --- not gain it. In reality, though, summer isn‘t all beach volleyball and water sports. Lots of summer activities can work against our efforts to stay at a healthy weight. The good news is that it‘s easy to avoid problems if we know what to look out for. Here are 5 ways to beat summer weight gain:

61. _____________________ When we don‘t have a plan, it‘s easy to spend summer moving from couch to computer, with regular stops at the fridge. Avoid this by setting a specific aim, like volunteering, mastering a new skill, or working at a job. Just be sure to plan for some downtime so you can relax a little!

62. _____________________ With school out, we lose our daily routines. If you don‘t have a specific job or activity to get up for, it‘s easy to sleep late, watch too much TV, and snack more than usual. Make sure your summer days have some structure — like getting up at the same time each day and eating meals at set times. Plan activities for specific times, like exercising before breakfast, for example. If you have time on your hands, offer to make dinner a couple of nights a week so your family can enjoy a sit-down meal together.

63. _____________________ When we‘re bored, it‘s easy to fall into a trap of doing nothing and then feeling low on energy. In addition to helping you avoid the cookie jar, filling your days with stuff to do can give you a sense of accomplishment. That‘s especially true if a dream summer job or planned activity fell through. Limit your screen time — including TV, computer, and video games — to no more than 2 hours a day.

64. _____________________ Don‘t let hot summer days prevent you from carrying out exercise plans. Move your workout indoors. If a gym isn‘t your scene, try bowling or an indoor climbing wall. If you love being outdoors, try joining a local pool or move a regular run or soccer game to early morning or evening.

65. _____________________ Summer means picnics and barbecues — activities that revolve around an unlimited spread of food. Pace yourself. Don‘t overload your plate. Avoid going back for seconds and thirds. Choose seasonal, healthy foods like fresh fruit instead of high-sugar, high-fat desserts. Make catching up with family and friends your focus, not the food. Another good tip for summer eating is to limit frozen treats like ice cream to no more than once a week.

I've asked several people what happened, but no one will give me a_______ answer.

   A. loose          B. native        C. latter           D. straight

With all the wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, it's not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us get through each and every day of our lives. Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dumps (处于沮丧中), as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.

How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-workers, neighbors, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you.

I know of a few people that don't have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke

Laughing is essential to keeping your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to bypass the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.

 41. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that ____________.

After having a heavy lunch, when we continue our work in office, we tend to feel drowsy. It may strengthen so much that we find it difficult to keep our eyes open. At that time, many of us wish we could have a small bed next to our desks where we can take a rest! Sometimes, we even get a sense of guilt for fear that we may commit some mistakes in the work we are doing at that time. Some people may think that there must be something wrong with their health.

Usually, our lunch consists of heavy foods that make the stomachs full. So, most of the blood is directed towards the stomachs where the digestion is taking place. As a result, the brain receives much less amount of oxygen than it usually gets. This condition gives rise to drowsiness which is also accompanied by a sense of tiredness. During digestion of the foods, stomach acids are produced to help with digestion but they also change the pH values of the blood and make it alkaline(碱性的). Generally speaking, the pH values of the blood from 7.35-7.45 is normal. This alkalinity of blood can lead to the drowsy feeling. If you observe carefully, you will find that when you eat foods like pasta or bakery products, you tend to feel sleepier. These foods make the sugar levels in the blood higher than normal.

Thus we’d better make some changes on the foods that make up our lunch. Avoid potatoes, pasta, desserts and sweets, and eat less. Besides, we should stay away from drinks rich in caffeine, such as coffee. The fact is that it can make you think clearly only for a brief period of time. After that, you will start feeling sleepy all over again. Walking a few minutes after lunch is the best way to get rid of the drowsiness. This will improve the flow of blood in the body and will limit the blood sugar.

28. What does the underlined word “drowsy” in Para. 1 mean?

 A. Sick.   B. Weak.    C. Sleepy.    D. Impatient.

29. Why do we sometimes feel guilty after having a heavy lunch

A. Because we can’t help worrying about our health.

 B. Because we may drink lots of our company’s coffee.

 C. Because we fear we may make mistakes in the work.

 D. Because eating may take up our work time.

30. If a person eats too much, the pH value of his blood might be at ______.

 A. 8       B. 7       C. 6       D. 5

31. By following the suggestions in the last paragraph, we could________.

 A. get rid of our bad eating habits finally

 B. improve our health without much effort

 C. keep our blood flowing at a normal speed

D. ensure our work efficiency in the afternoon

We are now living in a information age, in which TV, cellphones and the Web are wide used. It seem that many people cannot enjoy themselves without it. However, unless I were to give up one of them, I would turn off TV rather than to switch off my cellphone or cut off the Internet. I can do without TV because few shows attract me and there are too many ads. Besides, most programs on TV are available elsewhere, either. As for cellphones and the Web, they are less necessary for me. I need a cellphone to keep in touch my family and friend.

I watch documentaries, not movies.I read history books, not fiction.I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America, I like it.But this fixation on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots.

New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline in a speech.“We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming(难以应付的) pressures, and it sort of eclipses the thinking about character and morality.”

Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement.Forcing as many success-building activities into their schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep.“Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-improving activity to the next,” Brooks wrote in an article, “We fear failure more than we desire success.”

A century ago, college was about character building.Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual.

Philosopher Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds.Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning(演绎推理).Clouds cannot be taken apart.Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way.

“When we have a Cloud problem, we try to turn it into a Clock problem,” Brooks said. And in a reason-centered culture, adding titles to one’s resume becomes a trend. At American University, 85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent of business majors) graduate with at least one practical experience which is often helpful to a student’s future career, but can sometimes draw focus away from academics.

To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human natures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person.“Synchronicity is key to happiness,” he said.Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own.

29.From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people __________.

A.are controlled by time

B.are keen on reading books

C.are changing their characters

D.are eager to achieve more

30.In Paragraph 2, the underlined word “eclipses” means _________.

A.deletes       B.weakens

C.worsens       D.emphasizes

31.The last paragraph mainly tells us that __________.

A.love is more important than focus

B.the focus on human natures counts

C.more work contributes to happiness

D.success comes from devotion to work

32.The purpose of this passage is to __________.

A.bring awareness to character building

B.stress the importance of productivity

C.warn about the pressure to seek success

D.criticize students’ desire for achievements

Many of you are studying hard because you have to compete with many others in the upcoming national college entrance exam. But it may not occur to you that one of your competitors is a robot. An artificial intelligence(AI) robot will take part in the 2017 National College Entrance Exam, reported China Daily.

“The robot will sit three exams: math, Chinese, and a comprehensive test of liberal arts (文科), which includes history, politics and geography,” Lin Hui, CEO of an AI company in Chengdu. Like the others who take the exam, the robot will have to finish the tests in the given time. But instead of taking exams together with other students, the robot will take its exams in a closed room without anyone else present, except for proctors(监考人)and a notary(公证人). It is expected to be totally disconnected from the Internet and solve the problems with its AI program.

It’s believed that Chinese and the test of its liberal arts skills, rather than its math skills, will give the robot its biggest challenges. Questions in math are objective with specific answers, while in the other test subjects there are some subjective questions that test skills such as reading comprehension and essay writing.

The robot aims to be enrolled in one of the first-class Chinese universities in 2017, and then try to get into the more famous universities of Tsinghua or Peking University in 2020.

23. Which is one of the biggest challenges for the robot candidate?

   A. Math calculating            B. Objective questions

   C. Liberal arts skills            D. Physics questions

24. Choose the correct one according to the passage.

   A. The robot candidate will have its separate proctors

Disability aids are vital to those who suffer problems with executing work with two hands. These are people who have been disabled due to some major sickness or some other problems. In order to help them carry on their work in the normal way, disability aids are manufactured. This helps them make their life a lot easier than what it would have been without these aids. The kind of disability aids that an individual might require depends on the person only. It is the problem that a person faces that decides the aids that he/she will use for carrying out their respective jobs. The following is the list of a few disability aids that come of significant use.

The first and foremost aid is the stocking aid, aiding the individuals suffering from the problem of bending down to reach the foot and wear their own socks. These stocking aids have a gutter() that is made up of plastic material. These gutters are shaped in a certain way along with the attachment of cotton tapes in it. The sock is then put over the gutter. The foot is placed inside the gutter. The cotton tapes help in pulling the socks up the leg and subsequently the sock. In this manner, the sock is worn by a person who has problems wearing it by bending one’s back and reaching the foot.

There are openers that help the people who have problems with their hands or wrists to open bottles of ketchup, jam and other such bottles and jars that necessitates the use of hands and fingers.

The third type of disability aids that comes to our minds are lifts. Now what are lifts? Lifts are certain machines that help in lifting people from specific areas, such as a bathtub or a set of stairs. These lifts are of varied types and come for numerous applications. It is for the individual to decide the type that he/she requires to use.

For people, who have problems in balancing their upper bodies in a stable manner, there is something known as grab rails. These grab rails are installed for those who have mobility problems in their upper bodies. These rails come in varieties of shapes, sizes and angles. These grab rails are available to home users as well, in their different variations. One can purchase and fix one to their homes according to one’s specificities. These grab rails require the act of screwing and drilling in order to fix them to their appropriate place. The prices of these rails also vary according to the variation of their shapes and sizes.

A portable book holder is a much sought-after disability aid. It can be used by anybody for that matter, not just the disabled. These portable book holders are light-weight and can be easily moved about. These holders relieve the strains on one’s hands, necks and shoulders that might occur due to the handling of a book. The holders are provided with extended legs that help in placing the reading material at suitable distance.

Thus with the help of these disability aids, the old and disabled people can make their lives much more convenient and comfortable that would otherwise have been a cumbersome and complex one.

American middle school students don't seem to care that they're worse at maths than their counterparts(同龄人) in China's Hong Kong and Finland. "I don't need it," my student says. "I'm going to be a basketball star. Or a car mechanic, or a singer."

Middle school students' maths skills were tested by the International Organization for Economic Co--operation and Development. The United States ranked 28th out of 41 countries tested. After all, when was the last time you used algebra(代数)?

But maths isn't just about training Americans to become scientists. It has its own value. It helps you see patterns and develops your logic skills, and it teaches you to concentrate and to separate truth from falsehood. Maths helps you make wise financial decisions, so you can avoid false claims from advertisers, politicians and others. It helps you determine risk. For example, after an airplane crash, studies show that people are more likely to drive than to take a plane in spite of the fact that they are much more likely to be killed or injured while driving. Planes are not like criminals who repeat the same crime over and over. One plane is not more likely to crash just because another plane recently did. In fact, the most dangerous time to drive is probably right after a plane crash because so many people are on the road.

It is not possible to really understand science and the scientific method without understanding maths. A rainbow is even more beautiful and amazing when we understand it.

The precision of maths helps us think in a very special way. How do we bring the learning of maths back to life? I don't have the big answer. I try my best to help pupils find answers to some maths problems.  When I can get one to say, "wow, that's great," I feel the joy of a small victory.

1Some American students don't care about their poor maths results because    .

Amaths is useless to most people

Bthey have no interest in maths

Cthey think maths has nothing to do with their future

Dthey don't do well in maths

2The example in Paragraph 3 is used to show        .

Aevery coin has its two sides

Bwe should not be cheated by fault facts

Cmaths is close to our daily life

Da simple fact shows complicated rules

3The writer would agree that        .
