I still remember it was in the winter of 1990 that, together with the help of my older sister, I   41   down my wishes for Christmas onto a piece of paper. How I wished on Christmas Eve my grandest wish would be   42   and placed under the Christmas tree—a puppy. When we were done, our wish-lists were collected by our parents with the promise to be   43   to Santa’s hard-working helpers.

The next day, our parents sat us down in the living-room, with   44  expressions on their faces. As it   45  , they had seen our wishes, now wanting to talk to us about one wish   46   — the puppy. For a moment, I held my breath, but was   47   when they told us that they weren’t against a puppy. What they   48   against was putting it under the Christmas tree. That was not a good idea.

They   49   taught us that an animal was not a gift that belonged to the same   50   as our toys. Animals were creatures with   51   . Once we decide to have one, it would be a (an)   52   to our family. An animal   53   a lot of responsibilities. It wasn’t anything one bought out of a mood. An animal could not be exchanged or   54   when we didn’t feel like it. A animal wasn’t a toy. An animal was a   55   family member that needed lots of love and attention. An animal was not a   56  , but a family decision. A serious decision. And a big decision.

57  , my Parents share my love for animals, so the decision came reasonably   58  . After our grandparents had given their  59  up for taking care of the dog, while we were on future vacations, the answer was yes. Yes, we would get a puppy.

The following days and weeks, there was only one   60  our new family member! Yes, a family member, because animals have their rights. They are not simply food or gifts. We humans must attend, love and protect them.

I was ten when I first sat with my grandmother behind the cashier(收银台)in her general store. 16_I quickly learned the importance of treating customers politely and saying “thank you.”

At first I was paid in candy.    17    I worked every day after school, and during the summer and on weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. My father helped me set up a bank account.    18

By the time I was 12, my grandmother thought I had done such a good job that she promoted me to selling cosmetics(化妆品)I developed the ability to look customers directly in the eye. Even though I was just a kid, women would ask me such things as “What color do you think I should wear?” I took a real interest in their questions and was able to translate what they wanted into makeup(化妆)ideas.    19

The job taught me a valuable lesson: to be a successful salesperson, you didn’t need to be a rocket scientist—you needed to be a great listener.  20    Expect they are no longer women purchasing cosmetics from me; instead, they are kids who tell me which toys they would like to see designed and developed.

 A. Before long, she let me sit there by myself.

 B. Soon I found myself looking more beautiful than ever before.

 C.Later I received 50 cents an hour.

D.I ended my selling a record amount of cosmetics.

 E. My grandma’s trust taught me how to handle responsibility

 F. Watching my money grow was more rewarding than anything I could have bought.

 G. Today I still carry that lesson with me: I listen to customers.

Which of the following is right?

       A. She said that I was here a few weeks ago.  B. She said she was there a few weeks ago.

C. She said that I have been there a few weeks ago.

D. She said she had been there a few weeks before.

Everyone has dreams and they obey the rules that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here are four goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future.

The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pains and illnesses. Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan, is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!

The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships--- intimate, personal or social--- with the people we like and respect, and who like and respect us in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.

The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and elevated faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.

The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again. You want to completely be free of financial worries. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat.

Anthropology sophomore Van Truong recently combined art and biology to excel at her final

exam in December. While most of her college mates used lists and flashcards to memorize stuff, Van used a whiteboard to write out all her notes in the form of `Starry Night', Van Gogh's famous

Masterpiece.

"I knew I had to study for this exam, and I knew I'd be writing on this whiteboard for hours," she said. "So I thought,`Wouldn't it be funny if I did it in a form where people didn't know how to feel about it? "'

So when she got to Smathers Library on the University of Florida's Gainesville campus, she started to write down all her notes with the words forming a replica(复制品)of Van  Gogh's iconic painting. Three hours later, the masterpiece was complete.

Truong said that the special technique helped her keep awake during the tiring study session, and actually learn more than she normally would have. "I knew if I had to read through a packet of notes, I'd fall asleep," she admitted. "I don't know if I would have lasted three hours just going through notes. I can explain chronologically the order of where I placed each word on that Starry Night replica better than a sequence of events in evolutionary history."

And the reason she chose `Starry Night' was because of its composition. She realized that a painting of a person might look disjointed if made out of words. But she could easily make the sentences look like Van Gogh's beautiful, wavy brush strokes.

The young anthropology student is no stranger to original art. Last year, she and a friend recreated Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa using seaweed(海带)that had washed up on shore near her home.

66. Unlike her college mates, Van Truong_.

    A. used flashcards to memorise exam facts.

    B. reviewed her notes in the form of Van Gogh's painting.

    C. combined words and biology to achieve a better exam performance.

    D. went to the library to complete Van Gogh's replica.

67. Which of the following is Not an advantage the special technique brought her?

    A. It kept her refreshed and focused.

    B. It made her learning more productive.

    C. It fought off the boredom of mechanical memorization.

    D. It improved her understanding of Van Gogh's masterpiece.

68. The reason why she preferred `Starry Night' to a portrait was that__________

    A. she previously wrote a composition about ‘Starry Night’

    B. words would look separate and disconnected in a portrait

    C. sentences fitted in with the strokes of `Starry Night' better.

    D. she could produce more beautiful sentences in `Starry Night'

69. What's the best title of this passage?

    A. A Diligent Student                 B. A Creative Learner

    C. An Enthusiastic Artist              D. A Follower of Van Gogh

Picking a university is a tense period of asking yourself which institution is most relevantThat's why university rankings play such a vital role in students searching for their next academic directionRankings are also an inescapable part of the reputation and brand image of universities"No university website is complete without the claim to be in the top 100 for something  or other," reported the BBCThe reason is simple: Rankings help them to attract students, staff and research investment

Currently there are numbers of university rankings, and each has its own list of criteriaBut the main categories are the same: academic reputation, graduates' performance and faculty resources

However, experts point out the ranking process isn't entirely reliableMark Kantrowitz, a US financial aid researcher, said university rankings were mostly just for showHe wrote in The New York Times"It may give your parents better bragging rights, but that's about it"

Moreover, it's not difficult to see the limitations of university rankingsMany rankings focus on the number of times research work is cited 引用 by other researchersIt helps British and US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favored language of academia, John O'Leary, a member of the QS academic advisory board, told The Gunrdian,    Also, rankings such as QS mainly focus on the qualities of the university rather than its students"Any university ranking is likely to help students make better decisions about where to study, but the need to balance them with other more human factors is also important," said Phil Moss, an education and admissions consultant "Advice from graduates or current students can be as valuable in providing a genuine insight into the experience or quality of a particular degree programIt can also add an element that rankings can never convey-the actual emotion of a university experience"

32Why do universities consider rankings important?

     ARankings make them more appealing

     BRankings are students' only reference

CRankings can increase their academic level

DRankings help them complete their websites

33What does the underlined "It" in paragraph 4 refer to?

AAcademic research work                    BThe number of researches

CThe way of ranking universities              DThe limitation of university ranking

34According to John O'Leary, what helps British and US universities rank well?

AThe wide use of English in academia       BTheir outstanding qualities

CTheir graduates' excellent performance     DThe academia's favor to them

35Besides ranking, what does Phil Moss suggest you should refer to if you're picking a university?

AInvestment in education                        BGuidance from professors

CInformation on websites                       DSuggestions from students

Children above 12 are able to take part in skiing or other activities        for them

I heard many patents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching (紧握) at one another’s hands for reassurance.

They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger cocoon.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.

But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come — with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

A. the distractive and variable society
