In Glasgow, Scotland, a young lady, like a lot of teens today, got tired of home. The daughter objected to her family’s   1   lifestyle and said, “I don’t want your God. I am leaving!”

She left home. Before long, she was disappointed and unable to find a job, so she took to the streets to do everything she could to   2  . Many years passed by, her father died, her mother grew   3  , and the daughter became more and more entrenched (固执)in her way of life.

No contact was made between mother and daughter during these years. The mother, having   4   her daughter’s whereabouts, went to the poor part of the city in   5   of her daughter. She stopped at each of the rescue missions (收容所)with a simple   6  . “Would you allow me to   7   this picture?” It was a picture of the smiling, gray-haired mother with a handwritten   8   at the bottom: “I love you still … come home!”

One day the daughter wandered into a rescue mission for a hot meal. She sat   9   listening to the service, all the while letting her   10   wander over to the bulletin board. There she saw the picture and thought, could that be my mother?

She couldn’t   11   until the service was over. She stood and went to look. It was her mother, and there were those words, “I love you still … come home!”  12   she stood in front of the picture, she wept. It was too   13   to be true.

It was night, but she was so   14   by the message that she started walking home.  15   the time she arrived it was early in the morning. She was afraid and   16   her way timidly (胆怯地). As she knocked, the door   17   open on its own. She thought someone must have broken into the house. Concerned for her mother’s   18  , the young woman ran to the bedroom and shook her mother awake and said, “It’s me! It’s me! I’m home!”

The mother couldn’t believe her eyes. They fell into each other’s arms. The daughter said, “I was so worried and   19   someone had broken in.” The mother replied gently, “No, dear. From the day you left, that door has never been   20  .”

If this summer you pay a visit to Milan, the fashion center of Italy, make sure you’re not caught eating ice cream in the streets after midnight as doing so is now ___41___.

A new law was passed by Milan’s city council banning the sale of take-away food and drinks after midnight in some districts which are famous for their nightlife ___42___. The purpose of this unusual move is, according to the city council, to discourage night gathering in downtown areas.

The law inevitably has given rise to a number of protests, accusing that the government has ___43___ people’s normal lives.  However, if you take into consideration the country’s ___44___ economy and its high unemployment rate, the local government’s fear of night assemblingmay be reasonable.

In fact, Milan’s law is only the strangest of a host of restrictions on nightlife that have ___45___ up in European cities recently.   Madrid’s city center was declared a low-noise zone last September and the city council has been refusing to ___46___ bar and club licenses ever since.

Why do European cities deal so strictly with nightlife?  It may be because Europe’s population is getting older and can no longer ___47___ late night activities within the neighborhood.

In the past, bars and clubs bloomed in European city centers, which were ___48___ to working class populations. But gradually, these people began to move out of the city centers and into the suburbs. Only the wealthy and the upper-class people can afford to live in ___49___ centers now. But these people don’t go to bars and clubs to socialize. Instead, they consider fun-seekers who wander in their neighborhoods annoying. They also worry that bars and clubs will make their neighborhoods less ___50___ and devalue their housing property.

An online survey at www.sina.com.cn suggested more than four in five interviewees _______the Microsoft move would not be effective _________ software piracy.

Mr. Li, who has a great influence on my growth, is a good teacher with a pair of glasses. He’s real considerate and we all love him.

Last week, I suddenly had a terrible stomachache in the class. Mr. Li was very worried. He sent me to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. After check, the doctor said there were something wrong with my stomach, and I needed to stay in hospital for another day. But both my parent were far away. Mr. Li made several phones and stayed with me all the night in the hospital. He even bought food for me or asked me to take medicine on time. After recovery, he helped me with the missing lessons, what made me so moved.

Here, I want to express gratitude to him, for I can’t recover so fast with his care. Because of him, I can make a great progress in my study. No present can express my grateful feeling to my teacher. I will study hard and this is the best present for her.

The Best Holiday

I was unbelievably proud of my nine-year-old daughter, Emily. 1 to buy a mountain bike, she’d been saving her pocket money all year, as well as doing small jobs to earn extra money.

By Thanksgiving, she had collected only $49. I said, “You 2 have your pick from my bicycle 3 .” “Thanks, Daddy. But your bikes are so old.” She was right. All my girls’ bikes were 1950s models, not the kind a kid today would 4 choose.

As Christmas 5 near, Emily and I went bike shopping. As we left one store, she 6 a Salvation Army volunteer standing next to a big pot.

Then one day, she made a 8 announcement. “You know all the money I’ve been saving?” she said hesitantly. “I’m going to give it to the poor people.” So one cold morning before Christmas, Emily handed her total savings of $58 to a volunteer who was really very 9 .

10 by Emily’s selflessness, I decided to contribute 11 of my old bicycles to a car dealer who was collecting used bikes for poor children. 12 I selected a shiny model from my collection, however, it seemed as if a second bike took on a glow(发光).Should I contribute two? No, one would be enough. But I couldn’t 13 the feeling that I should give a second bike. When I later 14 the bikes, the car dealer said, “You’re making two kids very 15 , sir. At one level, the Internet has enabled people to make connections they might not otherwise have made, and virtual friendships can ______ real-life relationships.

A. evolve into          B. arise from               C. seek for                   D. attach to

One sentence from the news in Washington has remained in my mind since a trip last summer: “When you see people run against the crowd escaping 61 the danger, they are 62 (probable) firefighters, police or journalists.”

I think this is most true for the firefighters. Whenever and wherever 63 (disaster) happen — 9/11 Attacks in New York 14 years ago or the explosion in Tianjin on Wednesday night — it is always the firefighters 64 take the lead to run to the very center, saving lives by 65 (risk) their own.

I cried today near the explosion site, not because of the smoke from the ongoing fire 66 because of a short message a firefighter sent to a trusted friend that went viral online. It reads, “If I cannot make it, my father is your father; and please remember 67 (sweep) my mother’s tomb.” I was thrilled later to learn that he did make 68 .

“Everyone knows it’s 69 (danger) to be a firefighter. But he has always liked it and has done it for 12 years,” his father said. “He 70 (survive) this time, but no one knows what will happen next time.”

One Sunday, my family had gathered at my parents’ house to feast upon Mom’s wonderful cookingDuring the normal dinner chatter, I noticed that my father was slurring (说话含混) his wordsNo one mentioned this during dinner, but I felt compelled to discuss it with my mother afterward

We decided that there was something seriously wrong and that Dad needed to see the doctor

Mom phoned me two days later“The doctor found a brain tumor (肿瘤).It’s too large at this point to operateMaybe they can do something then, but the odds are long

Even with the treatment, my father’s condition worsened, and the doctor finally informed us that this condition was terminal(晚期的)During one of his stays in the hospital, we brought our baby daughter Chelsey with us when we visited himBy this time he had great difficulty speakingI finally figured out that he wanted Chelsey to sit on his stomach so he could make faces at her

Watching the two of them together, I realized I was living an experience that would stay with me foreverThough grateful for the times they could share, I couldn’t shake the feeling of a clock ticking in the background

On the visit to my parents’ home during what we all know was my father’s last days, my mother took Chelsey from my arms and announced, “Your father would like to see you alone for a minute

I entered the bedroom where my father lay on a rented hospital bedHe appeared even weaker than the day before

“How are you feeling, Dad?” I asked“Can I do anything for you?”

He tried to speak, but he couldn’t make out a word

“I’m sorry, but I can’t understand you,” I said

With great difficulty he said, “I love you

We don’t learn courage from heroes on the evening newsWe learn true courage from watching ordinary people rise above hopeless situationsIn many ways my father was a strict, uncommunicative manHe found it difficult to show emotionThe bravest thing I ever saw him do was overcome that barrier to open his heart to his son and family at the end of his life

41Which of the following statements is TRUE?

AThe writer accompanied his father to a medical examination

BThe writer’s father got worse after the removal of the brain tumor

CThe writer was quick to notice the strange condition of his father

D.  The writer’s father had known about his illness before the writer discovered it

42What does the underlined sentence “the odds are long” mean?

AThere’s little possibility for Father to recover

B.  It takes a long time for Father to recover

CFather needs love and care from his family

DThey need a proper time to operate on Father

43. How might the writer have felt when he saw his father make faces at Chelsey?

    A. Disappointed      B. Glad         C. Surprised        D. Bitter

44The father had never said “I love you” to the writer before because______

Ahe was not used to openly showing his emotions

Bhe was not so attached to the writer

Che thought there was no need to tell the writer

Dhe believed in strictness and punishment

45What does the writer attempt to tell us?

ALife is short, so live your life to the fullest

BDon’t wait to see a doctor till it is too late

CBravely express your love for your family

DWe don’t often value health until we lose it
