WHEN you think of a typical American, whom do you picture? A pretty blond white American like Taylor Swift? Or a handsome black American like President Barack Obama or basketball star Kobe Bryant? In fact, there was a time when the average American looked like none of these people.
Back in the year 1500, the average American was a brown-skinned hunter-gatherer who probably rode a horse and wore clothing made from animal skins. Today, these people-who usually identify themselves based on their individual tribes such as Iriquois, Apache and Navajo-are broadly referred to as “Native Americans”, “American Indians” or simply “Indians”.
There’s a chance that you’ve never even heard of American Indians. That’s because there aren’t very many left. When the European settlement of North America began, there were fierce conflicts between the settlers from overseas and these native peoples. After the British government and military were expelled (赶走) in the Revolutionary War, conflicts with natives continued as the states were created that would later make up the US. In these conflicts, millions of natives were killed.
In 1830, president Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. This act required all Indians to migrate to the west of the Mississippi River to allow for the expansion of the US. American Indians were treated as a military “enemy” until 1924, when the few Indians still alive at that point were granted US citizenship. That was the first time that the US government formally recognized Indians as human beings.
While the story of the American Indians has been a sad one, these peoples’ legacies (遗产) are still felt every day in the US. Many US geographical names come from Indian languages, such as Ohio, Topeka, Kansas, and the Potomac River. At the same time, there are numerous successful academics and other important US leaders who are descended from Indians. And nowadays, more and more history classes in US public schools are educating students about how Indians suffered during the settlement of the US. I was lucky enough to take such a history class in high school. I sincerely believe that if we want a better future, we must look carefully and honestly at the past.
56. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. Few American Indians have achieved success due to their poor living conditions.
B. Today few Americans know about how Indians suffered during the settlement of the US.
C. In the past, most of the American Indians lived in the states of Ohio and Kansas.
D. Since the year 1924, American Indians have been recognized as US citizens.
57. What does the article mainly talk about?
A. The sad story of American Indians. B. How the American Indians succeeded in the US.
C. What a typical American is like. D. American Indians’ economic impact on the US.
58. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance.

Some 30,000 years ago, artists who lived in caves in Europe painted pictures of the animals around them: panthers, hyenas, rhinos, cave lions, mammoths and other creatures which have been extinct for a long time. The paintings were highly realistic. Some even showed movement.
The artwork, more than a thousand drawings, is considered the oldest group of human cave drawings which have ever been discovered. They were preserved because the cave was sealed-- closed off--for more or less 23,000 years.
Fast forward to December 18, 1994, a group of French cave scientists were exploring caves in southern France. Jean-Marie Chauvet, who led the group then, describes the process
of discovering the cave paintings. “At that time I was in the front, Eliette just walked behind me, Christian behind. Eliette said she saw two marks made with red ochre and she said, ‘They came here.’ And at this
very moment everything began. The drawings and everything linked to the parietal art (壁画). That is where it started.”
Cave art expert Jean Clottes reviewed the paintings. “I was amazed at the number of paintings there were and paintings of their quality and particularly in front of the panel of the horses.”
Scientific analysis confirmed the prehistoric date of the artwork. Studies showed the drawings were created tens of thousands of years ago, before human history was written. The United Nations
’ cultural agency UNESCO lists the cave as a World Heritage Site. They say that the drawings form a remarkable expression of early human artistic creation of grand excellence and variety.
The Chauvet Cave has been named after the explorer who first entered it. However, its environment and drawings are too fragile to be visited by human beings. So the cave is closed, and only people there for scientific purposes can go inside and see the artwork.
However, French authorities asked experts to create an exact copy of the cave, called Pont d’Arc Cavern. The co
py, which we also call replica, cost more than 59 million dollars to build. It opened at the end of April in France.
Pascal Terrasse is the president of the cavern. He says everyone will
be able to experience the thrill of looking at drawings made by the first humans in Europe. He says the place is magic because it is done so well. Authorities say they think as many as 400.000 people will be allowed to visit Pont d’Arc Cavern every year.

As is known to all that we students of today have to fix our attention on our lessons, so we know few of society. A holiday is the best time and the best chance to make up for that. Take a part-time job is a good form of social practice. That we have learned in books and in class can’t have the same important effect us as what we have learned through personal practice. In social practice, we can surely make a progress in both knowledge or practical ability. Beside, when we take a part-time job, we may got paid more or less to help our family. Thus, I will say we senior school students should take part-time jobs in their holidays, if possible.
Soon enough, we will lose some of the most amazing sites on Earth!
The Great Barrier Reef---Rising air temperatures will cause sea temperatures to rise as well. All life supported by the oceans will be affected with this shock to their ecosystem. Coral are some of the most vulnerable marine animals and we are already watching whole reefs disappear. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is no exception and will continue to shrink as the temperatures rise! These reefs are some of the best in the world for diving, but they will soon disappear!
Venice---Sprawing across(横跨)hundreds of small islands in Northeast Italy, Venice is at extreme risk of sinking into the Adriatic Sea. Rising sea levels are in fact a serious threat to many coastal cities located at sea level. Lucky for us, however, Venice is developing a series of sea walls to protect the city in times of high tide.
Glacier(冰川)National Park---Glacier National Park was once covered by over 150 glaciers, but by 2005 it only had about 27! Located in Montana, Canada, this park is over a million acres and has a huge plant and wildlife population. As temperatures rise, the glaciers and ice melt, which will upset the ecosystems sustaining over a thousand plant species and hundreds of animals.
The Amazon---The cause behind the disappearance of these fantastic places ultimately comes down to humans. Our expansion usually requires cutting down forests for land, fuel and materials, but rarely considers the consequences. These forests are sources of food and medicine for just about everyone on the planet!
What will happen if we lose these valuable places and beautiful destinations?!

It was about midday. I’d left work early in the morning to cash a check. I walked along to the bank and found there were only about ten or eleven customers there, a pretty unusual number for those central city banks.
I waited until it was my turn, walked up to the desk and started talking to the bank clerk. He had a really strange expression on his face — just sort of a blank (茫然的) stare. I thought he was looking at me until I realize he was staring over my shoulder.
I began to turn round to see what he was looking at and at the same moment, the outside bank guard, the one with the machine gun, came flying through the door and lay face down on the floor. Following him through the door were three absolutely frightening men wearing those horrible stocking masks. They were carrying guns; at least the one in front was carrying a pistol.
Whether or not they said anything I can't remember to this day, or whether people just automatically put their hands up I don't know. I put my hands up but I just didn't know what to do.
For a few moments there was just total silence, suddenly broken by the telephone ringing. I remember wondering who was on the other end of the line. Nobody answered the telephone, so it just kept on ringing and ringing, in this otherwise deathly quiet.
Then two of the masked men went to the counter, jumped over it and got the cashiers and bank clerks to start filling their bags with cash. While the two were getting the money, the one at the door covering us with the gun obviously got a bit of an anxiety attack and started swearing at them, telling them to hurry up and get a move on.
They jumped back over the counter. One of them lost his balance when he landed on the floor and fell over. The other two swore at him again. Then they left through the door, warning us, "Don't move. Stay like that with your hands up for ten minutes." Then they just disappeared and there was total silence.

On 8th March this year, events marking International Women’s Day (IWD) were held in many countries around the world. In most countries the events have a political tone: they tend to celebrate the advances women have made towards economic, social and political equality with men, and to press for change in those areas of life where there is still progress to be made.
In other countries, meanwhile, 8th March is traditionally more about expressing an appreciation of women: it is a day on which men give presents to their wives, girlfriends and mothers, and it therefore has some similarities with St Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
Back in 1911, the first IWD events in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland were certainly political. They were protests by women against forms of gender discrimination that would now be unthinkable in most parts of the world: almost nowhere were women allowed to vote, and Finland was the only country with any female members of a national parliament. The general expectation worldwide, across different continents and cultures, was that women would spend their lives largely in the home, devoting themselves to looking after their husbands and children. The proportion of women who had paid employment was far lower than today, and when women did go out to work they typically earned very little, meaning they were economically dependent on men.
A century later, gender inequality in employment – particularly pay inequality – is still one of the issues IWD tries to draw attention to: it remains common, of course, for women to earn less than men for doing exactly the same job.
Limited educational opportunities (there are many countries in which girls generally stay fewer years in school than boys) and domestic violence towards women have also been highlighted by events surrounding IWD in recent years.
And yet, as the IWD website notes, ____________________. As just one example, to return to the issue of women elected to office, the change over the last hundred years has been significant. Since 1911, when the small group of women in the Finnish parliament (nineteen of them, to be precise) were the only females in public office worldwide, the governments of more than fifty different countries have been led by women. In 2011, at least one country in every continent has a female leader, including high-profile examples such as Brazil (Dilma Rousseff), Germany (Angela Merkel) and Australia (Julia Gillard).
72. The underlined word in paragraph 3 “discrimination” probably means _____.
A. equality B. unfairness
C. difference D. imbalance
73. 100 years ago, it was widely considered that women’s main task was to _____.
A. fight for economical independence B. get the right to vote
C. fulfill their domestic responsibilities D. gain educational opportunities
74. Which of the following is the missing sentence in the first line of the last paragraph?
A. distinctive differences do exist between men and women
B. women expect too much of their political power
C. it’s impossible to realize the true equality between the two genders
D. alongside the ‘negatives’ there are plenty of ‘positives’
75. We can conclude from the passage that _____.
A. Much has been achieved in gender equality, but still there is space for improvement
B. The concept of equal pay for equal work is completely accepted in practice.
C. One or two female leaders can’t stand for women’s social status on the whole.
D. The progress in gaining equality in the last century seems to be too slow.

Restaurants have been around in some form for most of human civilization. As far back as ancient Greece and Rome, there was a trend that inns and taverns(客栈) generally served food to people who had a reason to be away from home. 36 Although taverns and coffee houses were popular places to gather and share beverages in the 17th century, the idea of eating out for fun didn’t take off in Western society until the late 18th century.
Although McDonald’s was the first restaurant to use the assembly-line system, some people think of White Castle as the first fast-food chain. 37 At the time, most people considered the burgers sold at fairs, circuses, lunch counters and carts to be low-quality. Many people thought hamburger came from slaughterhouse(屠宰场) scraps and spoiled meat.
38 They built their restaurants so that customers could see the food being prepared. They painted the buildings white and even chose a name that suggested cleanliness. White Castle was most popular in the American East and Midwest, but its success helped give hamburger meat a better reputation nationwide.
The McDonald brothers opened their redesigned restaurant in 1948, and several fast-food chains that exist today opened soon after. 39 And Wendy’s opened in 1969. McDonald’s is now the world’s largest fast-food chain.
According to the National Restaurant Association. American sales of fast food totaled $163.5 billion in 2005. 40 Total sales for McDonald’s grew 5.6 percent in 2005, and the company now has 30,000 franchised stores in more than 120 countries.
A. The industry is growing globally as well
B. This trend continued until relatively recently
C. White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas
D. Burger King and Taco Bell got their start in the 1950s
E. It’s hard to imagine fast food without drive-through windows
F. It allows restaurants to receive and store a large amount of food
G. White Castle’s founders decided to change the public’s perception of hamburgers
