Manners nowadays in big cities like London are particularly non-existent.It's nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside in the dash for the last remaining seat on a bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her,as he ought to.In fact,it is saddening to note that if a man does offer his seat to an older woman,it is nearly always one from the older generation.
This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued by young men,who say that, since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with courtesy and that those who go out to work should take their tum in the rat race like anyone else.Women have never claimed to be physically as strong as men.Even if it's not agreed, however, that young men should stand up for older women, the fact remains that courtesy should be shown to the old,the sick and the burdened. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves "First come, first served",while a gray-haired woman,a mother with a young child or a cripple stands?Yet this is too often seen.
Older people, tired and easy annoyed from a day's work, aren't angels,either-far from it.Many an argument or an insulting quarrel breaks out as they feel tired of pushes in the queue and shove(猛推)each other to get on buses.
If cities are to remain pleasant places to live in at all, however,it seems necessary, not only that communication in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. Shop assistant won't bother to assist, taxi drivers shout at each other as they dash dangerously round comers, bus conductors pull the bell before their desperate passengers have had time to get on or off the bus,and so on.It seems to us that it's up to the young and strong to do their small part to stop such deterioration(恶化).

Scientists in Mexico have just begun a new study of one of the world’s biggest pyramids: the Pyramid of the Sun, north of Mexico City. They’re putting lots of small, high-tech machines under the pyramid to try to unlock some of its secrets. For thousands of years, people have tried to uncover the secrets of the pyramids.
The people who built the pyramids made lots of secret doors and rooms to stop robbers from finding the treasures inside. However, there always have been some smart thieves in history. Now, almost all of Egypt’s pyramids have been robbed, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu, which is the largest pyramid in the world. It is the only one of the ancient wonders of the world that is still standing.
In AD 820, an Arab king named Abdullah AL Manum got a group of workers to dig their way into the Great Pyramid and have a look. Inside the pyramid, they found three rooms --- the Queen’s Chamber, the Grand Gallery and the King’s Chamber. But to their surprise, the men didn’t find the treasures they wanted. The Queen’s and King’s Chambers were both empty! Where were the King’s mummy and his treasures? Had someone already taken them away? The huge stone doors at the pyramid’s entrance were still closed when AL Manum’s men went inside. How had the thieves got in and out?
Since then, many people have gone inside the Great Pyramid to have a look or to try to take things. But still, no other chambers or walkways have been found.
In 2002, an American team made the most recent visit to the Great Pyramid. Scientists sent a robot into the pyramid, but they only found a mysterious locked stone door.

How to rebuild trust after it’s broken
Maybe your partner cheated on you, your best friend stabbed you in the back, or your co-worker took credit for your idea. On the other hand, maybe you lied to your sweetheart, stole the guy or girl your friend had an eye on, or failed to help a co-worker or classmate on an important project. Trust between two people means that they can be vulnerable(易受攻击的) with each other. 36 Here are what you need to do from both angles.
1. Coming clean does work. If you are the one who betrayed someone else, you need to come clean. In interpersonal relationships, it’s especially important to tell the truth when you would benefit a lie. 37
2. Being defensive or casual about the problem never works. There must be a sincere effort to work out the issues, or the wall will never come down. 38 Be patient with the other person, but be persistent in your own efforts.
3. 39 Trust between two people means that you have to be dependable and consistent over a long period of time. 40 If you can’t be honest in the future, or cannot do all that you promise to do, the person you betrayed will be unable to accept that you are worthy of being trusted again.
A. Talking about what made you do it.
B. Keep your word going forward.
C. You should avoid making the same mistake at all costs.
D. Therefore, losing trust is two-way street, and so is rebuilding it.
E. Denial will only make the other party’s distrust run deeper, especially if the truth is already clear.
F. You should make a promise to do better, but a promise or apology alone will only restore trust short-term.
G. The angrier you are, the less you are able to hear what the aggrieved one has to say, and the worse what they feel will get.

Dear son,
The day that you see me old and I am already not in good health, have patience and try to understand me.
If I get dirty when eating, if I can not dress, have patience and remember the hours I 36 teaching it to you. If, when I speak to you, I 37 the same things thousand and one times, do not 38 me, listen to me. When you were small, I had to read to you thousand and one times the same story 39 you got to sleep. When I do not want to have a 40 , neither shame me nor scold me. Remember when I had to chase you with thousand excuses I 41 , in order that you wanted to bathe. When you see my 42 little about new technologies, give me the necessary time and do not look at me with your mocking (嘲弄) smile. I taught you 43 to do so many things: to eat good, to dress well, to confront life …. When at some moment I lose the memory or the 44 of our conversation, let me have the necessary time to remember, and if I cannot do it, do not become nervous, as the most important thing is not our conversation but surely to be with you and to have you 45 to me.
If ever I do not want to eat, do not force me. I know well 46 I need to and when not. When my 47 legs do not allow me to walk, give me your 48 , the same way I did when you gave your first 49 . And when someday I say to you that I do not want to 50 any more — that I want to rest forever, do not get angry. Someday you will understand.
Try to understand that my age is not lived but survived. Some day you will discover that, 51 my mistakes, I always wanted the 52 thing for you and that I tried to prepare the way for you. You must not feel sad, angry or impotent (无可奈何) for seeing me 53 you. You must be next to me, try to understand me and to help me as I did it when you 54 living. Help me to walk, help me to end my way with love and 55 . I will pay you by a smile and by the immense love I have had always for you.
I love you, son.

During the summer holidays, I thought I should do anything meaningful instead of touring. So I got a job at fast food restaurant and worked there for a cleaner. I worked 7 hours a day for three week. The job was hard and boring and seemed endless, it made me so tired that I nearly left it halfway. Therefore, I stuck to it with determination. Every day I start off for work early in the morning and got to home late in the evening. Finally, I finished the job before the new school term began. Now, I understand that labor means. I consider it a successful experience, which is worth remembered forever.

In Britain,it's bottoms up from the week before Christmas till the last firework explodes in the sky announcing the new year,.The last Friday before Christmas popularly known as‘Mad Friday’—is one of the busiest periods for the country’s pubs and clubs.

Some wonderfully creative uses of X-rays have been in the world of art.But the most impressive one is to uncover what has been covered up.Details unfolded by an X-ray of a painting can ' t be seen any other way.For example, in the past, paintings were often repaired if small pieces of paint fell off the canvas (帆布). These repairs cannot be seen just by looking at the painting. It takes an X-ray to discover where the repairs have been made.
An X-ray of a painting is one of the best ways to tell if it was created by a famous painter or if it is a forgery. If there is a question as to whether an old master has painted a certain painting or not, X-rays are made and compared to those of paintings that are known to be original. If the brushstrokes (笔迹) , for example, are shown to be totally different than in other work done by a certain artist, then the painting is proved to be a fake copy.
Since modern paints are usually made from different materials than paints of hundreds of years ago, the image they leave on an X-ray film looks different. This is another way X-rays can be used to spot a forgery.A modem artist will try to make a forgery look hundreds of years old by painting dirty vamish on it or by using artificial means to get the varnish to look cracked. To the naked eye the forgery may look old, but when a careful study of the X-ray image is made, the deception is obvious.
It was common many years ago for an artist to finish a painting, decide it wasn't any good, and paint a completely different picture on top of it.Or artists would paint over others' work —it was their version of recycling.Taking an X-ray is the only way to find out if there is a picture underneath the picture you see with your eyes.Sometimes museums will be more interested in the painting beneath than the one on top, and will restore the older one by having the top layer painstakingly removed.
63.What is the main purpose of the article?

A spelling mistake on a sign outside a state primary school had me banging my head in despair—but don’t be panicked into thinking state education is fundamentally disabled.
There’s a notice on our local park gate, made by a local state primary school pupil, saying: “there is know things like the poo fairy.” What a good idea—a campaign to encourage the dog-owners among us to pick up their dog’s waste! And what an attractive and eye-catching poster! But “KNOW poo fairy”? why didn’t the teacher check the spelling before the poster was completed and displayed before the public? Didn’t he/she realize that not only is bad spelling a worry, but even worse—this is the sort of thing that could easily bring joy to Mr. Gove’s heart, because it seems to prove him right—ordinary state schools bad and academies good. And the country may take his propaganda (宣传) seriously. Show the panicking parents one bad spelling from a non-academy school, suggesting that it’s filled with wild and unqualified staff, and they’ll be scared that their children will come out walking on all fours, and must be marched straight into an academy—and institution full of exam results and undemocratic management.
Don’t fall for it, parents. Like thousands of teachers in state schools, and local authorities, you can care about children’s education and standards of literacy, you can even love Latin, without singing up to the Gove brigade (队列). Just because he has had an insight into our terrors and recognized our dreams, it does mean that he just knows how to take us in and what works in his favor.
“That ‘know poo’ teacher has scored an own goal,” says Fielding, “and you’re in a dilemma here. You’re caught between your enthusiasm for accurate grammar and your well-meaning social responsibilities” Even Fielding doesn’t get it. You can have the two thing together—high standards in comprehensives. We do not need academic. You can manage it!
53. “Know” in the poster should probably be spelled as ________.
A. no B. now C. new D. nor
54. Who is Mr. Gove in the passage?
A. A pupil’s father concerned about education. B. A teacher of a state primary school.
C. An advocate for academy. D. An enthusiast of literacy.
55. We can learn from the passage that the author________.
A. felt hopeless at the state primary education
B. tried to defend the spelling mistakes in the poster
C. thought highly of academy’s educational standard
D. was opposed to Mr. Gove’s misleading propaganda.
56. What is the author’s tune towards state primary education?
A. Negative B. Cooperative C. Encouraging D. Praiseful
