In surprise, we asked her why she bought us gifts. Her 51 was that she just wanted to show us she appreciated us. 52 lacking money, we had made it 53 for her to see her favorite group.
This wasn’t something new from our daughter; she had 54 given us gifts when she wanted to 55 her feelings. To us, each gift was a(n) 56 of joy. It could have been anything, it wouldn’t have mattered; it was the 57 itself and the feeling behind it.

It’s an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says “No” because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession(经济不景气) means no argument next year—we just won’t go.
Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2, 000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession—financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterized by intense verbal(言语上的) aggression(侵犯), tended to be repeated and not resolved and made men, more than women, extremely angry.
Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolizes, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for.” he explains. “They’ll say it’s to save to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something.
“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other know what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t. There seems to be more of a taboo about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint account(共同账户) and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”
67. What does the author say about vacationing?

B. Few people can afford it without working hard.
C. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
D. It is the chief cause of family disputes.

C. Few people can resist the temptation of money.
D. Disputes over money may ruin a relationship.

Should girls go to school only with other girls? Is it better for boys to attend all - boy schools? Educators at school for girls in Washington D. C. believe children in classes of the same sex do better, but Other experts say there is no real evidence to support that idea. They believe there are other more important things that make a school effective.
Excel Academy is the first all-girl school in Washington, D. C. that is independently operated and supported by taxpayers. It was established in 2007 and opened its doors in 2008. The Excel Academy provides free education to children from families without much money. It serves more that 600 girls from preschool, the youngest children to grade five. Three meals are serves each day. One of its students is 10-yar-oldAnyrech,who attended kindergarten in a classroom with boys. She says boys have different interests from girls. She's now at Excel for the following five years .“They would like to tell me that I can do it .They make me feel like I'm loved ang that I'm the smarter person in the world.”
Kaye Savage established the school . She says that when boys and girls are taught together, the teachers teach for the boys. She says boys are a little louder and much more active than the girls, which makes girls second - class citizens in their awn classrooms and schools. But Galen Sherwin ax the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU, disagrees. She says the evidence ,in her words,is not really there to support claims that same sex classrooms produce better results. “ Similarities between boys and girls are much greater and more relevant than any differences. Certainly any differences that exist are not relevant from an educational viewpoint,” Sherwin said.
Elaine Weiss is an education expert. She believes other considerations besides same sex classes have a bigger effect on children 's success in school. She says everything that happens in children's early development is important. “ Some of the early gap should be dealt with before Lids get to kindergarten. The classes should be relatively small, so that teachers can have a one - on - one conversation and interaction with students. And after - school opportunities should be enriched,” Weiss said.

Have you ever studied a subject or brainstormed an idea, only to find yourself with pages of information, but no clear view of how it fits together? This is where Mind Mapping can help you.
Mind Mapping is a useful technique that helps you learn more effectively, improves the way that you record information, and supports and enhances creative problem solving. By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of
a subject. You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. 36 , as they help your mind recall and review.
Popularized by Tony Buzan, Mind Maps abandon the list format of conventional note taking. They do this in favor of a two-dimensional structure. A good Mind Map shows the 'shape' of the subject, the relative importance of individual points, and the way in which facts relate to one another. 37 .
1. Write the title of the subject you're exploring in the center of the page, and draw a circle around it.
2. As you come across major subdivisions or subheadings of the topic (or important facts that relate to the subject) draw lines out from this circle. Label these lines with these subdivisions or subheadings.
3. As you "burrow" into (挖掘) the subject and uncover another level of information (further subheadings, or individual facts) belonging to the subheadings, draw these as lines linked to the subheading lines.
4. 38 .
5. As you come across new information, link it in to the Mind Map appropriately.
39 . Sub-topics and facts will branch off these, like branches and twigs from the trunk of a tree. You don't need to worry about the structure you produce, as this will evolve of its own accord.
40 . If you do any form of research or note taking, try experimenting with Mind Maps. You will find them surprisingly effective!
A. More than this, Mind Maps help you remember information
B. Mind Mapping is an extremely effective method of taking notes.
C. They help you to associate ideas and make connections that you might not otherwise make.
D. Then, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriate heading line and label them.
E. A complete Mind Map may have main topic lines radiating in all directions from the center.
F. To draw a Mind Map, follow these steps:
G. When created using colors and images or drawings, a Mind Map can even resemble a work of art!

A Snowstorm

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lad to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Some burst with anger, and scream and yell . But others keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones(荷尔蒙) . They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, "Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world.
The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.
“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”
“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly.”
His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.
24.Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?
A. They seldom follow the French law.
B. They often ignore the Guianese law.
C. They are separated from the modern world.
D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.
25.Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guianese as _________.
A. a tour guide B. a geographer
C. a film director D. a photographer
26.What is Gin’s attitude towards the lives of the indigenous Guianese?
A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Appreciative.
27.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The modern French lifestyle.
B. The self-supporting hunting.
C. The uncivilized world.
D. The French Republic.

When you feel disappointed, you should know it is natural and normal, and everyone will experience it to some extent in their life. Sometimes life deals us a difficult hand, and events and trials arise that we have no control over. Other times it is our own actions themselves that cause our trials. Regardless of the nature of our trials, disappointment is part of life’s journey and how we deal with it will largely determine the quality of our life. Here are some steps to help us to make our journey more enjoyable.
Firstly, redefine our rules. It is assumed that everyone has an internal “rule” in their mind. If our internal rules are too perfect, then they will discourage us greatly. For example, if we have a rule that says we need to be perfect, it is likely that we will spend a large amount of time feeling sad and disappointed. So when we feel disappointed, it is wise to review and redefine our rules. Want an example of an encouraging rule? Try this one: I am happy and I am successful since I have made my greatest efforts.
Secondly, remind ourselves now and then of the reasons why we are seeking the very goal. As a matter of fact, there are many cases where we have forgotten our original purposes along the way. So it is of great help to remember the reasons why we are committed to a path in the first place when we feel down. By revisiting those reasons, we will likely renew our commitment and not get hung up on the disappointment of the moment.
Thirdly, think about our larger vision and recommit to it. Disappointment is merely a setback on what will eventually be a great and inspiring journey. So when we have those momentary setbacks, it is helpful to think about our larger vision and recommit to it. In our larger vision, therefore, a disappointment is a very valuable experience, which serves as a good educator and makes us more able to meet the challenges of the future.
Finally, reset and have a new start. Resetting and starting anew prevents us from abandoning ourselves to self-pity and forces us to get up and move forward. Don’t live in the past. Take what the past has taught us and keep moving. Wake up the very next day as if our whole life is ahead of us and we have the chance to start fresh. Nothing that happened in the past can stop us from creating the life that we have always desired or from accomplishing the goals that we are seeking.
