Two of the hardest things to accomplish in this world are to acquire wealth by honest effort and, having gained it, to learn how to use it properly. Recently I walked into the locker room of a rather well-known golf club after finishing a round. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more than was good for them. These same men can be found there day after day, and, strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of affairs and wealth, successful in business and respected in the community if material prosperity were the chief necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy. Yet, it seemed to me, something very important was missing, or else there would not have been the constant effort to escape the realities of life through Scotch and soda. They knew, each one of them, that their productivity had ceased(停止).When a fruit tree ceases to bear its fruit, it is dying. And it is even so with man.
What is the answer to a long and happy existence in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from the book of Genesis which caught my eye while I was looking through my Bible. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed on my mind:“In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread.”
To me, that has been a challenge from my earliest recollections (memories). In fact, the battle of life, of existence, is a challenge to everyone. The immortal words of St. Paul, too, have been and always will be a great inspiration to me. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.
32. Which of the following is indicated in the first paragraph?
A. Wealth results from honest effort.
B.The men seated at tables in the locker room are lost in the significance of life.
C.For some people, no way can be found to escape the realities of life other than Scotch and soda.
D.The men acquire wealth by planting fruit trees.
33. The underlined sentence “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread” means “________”.
A. Bread tastes delicious when sweat pours off your face
B.No pains, no gains
C.Failure is the mother of success
D.Bread comes from t
he sweat o

A.was a wealthy person in the community
B.held a positive attitude towards an active life
C.was fond of associating with celebrities (名人)
D.kept a secret of the reason why he was so impressed
35. What is implied in the passage by the writer?
A.To use wealth properly, eat, drink and be merry.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.As life is but like a dream, a man is like a fruit tree.
D.If you cease to struggle, you cease to live.
Bad breath can be a major problem. The good news is that it can often be prevented with some simple steps.
Bad breath is caused by certain bacteria that grow in the mouth. When you don't brush regularly, bacteria accumulate in your mouth and between your teeth. 16 Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain pungent (辛辣的)oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. 17 Some people think that as long as you brush your teeth, you shouldn't have bad breath. 18 That, however, just doesn't remove the smell. To sufficiently clean all the surfaces of your teeth, you should brush for at least 2 minutes at least twice a day.
Many people believe that if you breathe into your hand, you'll know when you have bad breath. But it’s wrong! 19 When you talk, you tend to bring out the smell from the back of your mouth (where bad breath starts), which simply breathing doesn't do. Also, because we tend to get used to our own smells, it's hard for a person to tell if he or she has bad breath.
If you’re concerned about bad breath, make sure you’re taking care of your teeth and mouth properly. If you brush properly and visit your dentist for regular cleanings but your bad breath persists, you may have a medical problem. 20 They can figure out if something else is behind your bad breath and help you take care of it.
A. These bacteria make your breath smell.
B. In that case, call your doctor or dentist.
C. Smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.
D. Remember to brush your tongue, too — bacteria love to hang out there.
E. The truth is that most people only brush their teeth for 30 to 45 seconds.
F. When you breathe, the smell bounced back by your hand can be easily sensed.
G. When you breathe, you don^ use your throat the same way you do when you talk.

Freshmen anywhere may be nervous about university life. Here, three pieces of advice
are for them.
Listen but don't be silent
The world is held in students’ hand via smart phones. Thus, they may consider lecture listening less important. 36 It forces students to face the difficulties of training a deep attentiveness.Unsurprisingly, students find it hard to speak out, ask questions or for points of clarification. They don't want to appear foolish or incapable. However, there is no such thing as a foolish question. Teachers are there to help you understand. This also goes for seminars and workshops. 37
Read and buy books
38 There're so many useful online sources today, but the habit of reading books, especially whole books, is something being lost. Buy your own books. There are many bargains to be found on used-book websites or through Amazon. Being a book lover and buyer will help any student get the most out of their education.
39
As a student, you don't just have to learn to listen and become an active reader: you also have to become an academic writer. Written work at college level cannot be done at the last minute or in a rush. It takes time. Turn to your teachers. If they will read draft essays then make sure you can get feedback(反馈)ahead of the final submission. 40
Students who get feedback on their work always do better than those who do not. It is one
of the few educational laws that holds true in all cases.
A. Don't try to do it all the night before.
B. However, a lecture is a listening workout.
C. Thinking clearly cannot be done in a rush.
D. So train your ear, listen carefully, but don't be silent.
E. Reading is the most important thing that any student does.
F. Re-writing has proved to be the turning point in one's degree.
G. If they won't read drafts, then see them to run through your ideas.

Camping wild is a wonderful way to experience the natural world and, at it best, it makes little environmental influence. But with increasing numbers of people wanting to escape into the wilderness. It is becoming more and more important to camp unobtrusively(不引人注目的)and leave no mark.
Wild camping is not permitted in many places, particularly in crowded lowland Britain, Wherever you are, find out about organizations responsible for managing wild spaces, and contact them to find out their policy on camping and shelter building. For example, it is fine to camp wild in remote parts of Scotland, but in England you must ask the landowner’s permission, except in national parks.
Camping is about having relaxation, sleeping outdoors, experiencing bad weather, and making do without modern conveniences. A busy, fully-equipped campsite(野营地)seems to go against this, so seek out smaller, more remote places with easy access to open spaces and perhaps beaches. Better still, find a campsite with no road access: Walking in makes a real adventure.
Finding the right spot to camp is the first step to guaranteeing a good night’s sleep. Choose a campsite with privacy and minimum influence on others and the environment. Try to use an area where people have obviously camped before rather than creating a new spot. When camping in woodland, avoid standing dead trees, which may fall on a windy night. Avoid animal runs and caves, and possible homes of biting insects. Make sure you have most protection on the windward side. If you make a fire, do so downwind of your shelter. Always consider what influence you might have on the nature word. Avoid damaging plants. A good campsite is found, not made-changing it should be unnecessary.

Dodder is an unusual and unwanted plant that attacks other plants. Except for its flowers, the plant looks like spaghetti, a kind of noodles in the shape of long thin pieces that look like string when they are cooked. Its almost leafless, thread-like stems hang down on top of other plants that dodder needs to stay alive. Dodder does not produce its own food. Instead, it steals food from other plants. It feeds by sucking juices from the plant which is wrapped around, often making its host very weak or even killing it.
Dodder can find other plants by their smell. When a young dodder plant starts growing, it follows the smell of plants it prefers, like tomato plants, potato plants, or other farm crops. Unlike most plants that usually grow in the direction of light or warmth, a dodder plant will grow in the direction of, for example, tomato smell--if a tomato happens to be growing nearby.
However, a young dodder plant must find a host plant quickly. It no longer needs its root once it is attached to the host and wrapped around it. If it cannot catch a smell of a potential host within a few days, it will dry up and vanish even if there is plenty of water around. Once it finds a host, the young dodder plant will attach itself to it and start growing faster. At that point the dodder plant will drop its root.
Dodder is thus a difficult weed to manage and a real headache for farmers. When it does get out of hand, dodder can greatly reduce a farmer’s harvest or even destroy crops completely. Before sowing their produce, especially farmers in warm parts of the world often check to make sure no unwanted dodder seeds have mixed with their crop seeds. This is a good way to stop dodder plants from making their way to a crop field secretly.

A. To introduce a new variety of farm crops.

Grandpa's hobby was making birdhouses. He always said, “A man has to keep busy to stay out of trouble.” Leigh wasn't sure how much trouble Grandpa could get into anyway, since he was such a nice guy, but she tried to listen to his advice. Besides, she liked to help him on his birdhouses.
Grandpa's shop was full of welloiled and carefullykept tools. Whenever he used something, he put it back in exactly the right place. He had rules about how he treated his tools, because he hated buying something new if the old one still worked. He also made sure to clean up each time he worked on something.
It wasn't too fun cleaning up, but it was nice to watch him cut boards to exact lengths. It was nice to see the drill put in holes for screws (螺丝) to go in cleanly. It was like being a doctor, but with wood. The best part of building was seeing all the pieces come together in the final form.
The last steps always included lacquer or paint, to help protect Grandpa's hard work from the weather. His birdhouses lasted for years. If he didn't coat them properly, the sun and rain would turn the wood grey and weak in a short period of time. No, he always made sure to do things right. Even if he put rocks or other cute decorations (装饰) on them, it was done right and made to last.
Grandpa was a hard worker, but he was also smart and generous. He let Leigh keep the birdhouses sometimes, but only if he got to help hang it up or set the post for it. It had to be done just right, after all.
The birdhouses were a great way to learn about woodworking, hard work, taking care of what you have, and about birds. The best thing about building birdhouses was that Leigh spent some time with Grandpa.

C.didn't care about cleaning up D.kept thousands of birds
Daniel Anderson, a famous psychologist, believes it’s important to distinguish television’s influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn’t really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children’s minds.
One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images (影像). Instead, they learn both explicit(明确的) and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.
Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents’ educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads.” Anderson says.
Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ (智商) scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.
For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally(传统地) believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.
56. By watching TV, children learn _________.
A. images through words
B. more than explicit meanings
C. more about images than words
D. little about people’s psychology
57. An educational program is best watched by a child _________.
A. on his own
B. with other kids
C. with his parents
D. with his teachers
58. Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?
A. Radio-listening
B. Television-watching
C. Parents’ reading list
D. Parents’ educational background
59. Anderson believed that _________.
A. the more a child watches TV, the smarter he is
B. the younger a child is, the more he watches TV
C. the smarter a child is, the less likely he gets addicted to TV
D. the less a child watches TV, the better he performs at school
60. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advise on the educational use of TV.
B. To describe TV’s harmful effects on children.

Dear Sir or Madam,

With all my best regards.
Yours sincerely,

Thousands of taxi drivers in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, reportedly blocked streets with their vehicles on Sunday in protest against unlicensed vehicles using taxi-hiring apps (打车软件) and apps-based car rental companies providing passenger services, including high-end cars. Although the drivers also complained about the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy(补贴) by the government, their main complaint was the loss of business because of the rising number of Internet-based car services companies.
On Wednesday, news reports came that Beijing transport authorities will take measures to stop the illegal “taxi business” of private cars through the newly rising Internet apps, following the footsteps of Shenyang and Nanjing.
It is not yet clear how the Shenyang city government will handle the issue and whether it will declare the services offered by market leaders such as Didi Dache, a taxi-hiring app provider backed by Tencent Holdings, and Kuaidi Dache illegal. But Shanghai transport regulators have set a rule, by banning Didi Zhuanche, or car services offered by Didi Dache in December.
Such regulations will cause a setback to the car-hiring companies and investors that are waiting to cash in on the potentially booming business. Just last month, Didi Dache got $700 million in funding from global investors, including Singapore state investment company Temasek Holdings, Russian investment company DST Global and Tencent. Besides, the market is uncertain that Kuaidi Dache is about to finalize its latest round of funding after getting $800 million from global investors.
Regulatory uncertainties, however, could cast a shadow on the future of the Internet-based car-hiring services, which have become popular in most of China’s big cities. To be fair, these companies’ business model is anything but bad. For example, Didi Zhuanche works side by side with established car rental companies to provide high-end car service mainly for businesspeople through the Internet and mobile phone apps.
Every link in this business model chain has legal companies and services. Therefore, it is hard to define it as illegal and ban it.
24. Why did taxi drivers in Shenyang block the streets with their vehicles?
A. Because they wanted the authority to increase their driving allowances.
B. Because they wanted to be taught how to use the taxi-hiring apps.
C. Because they wanted to appeal to passengers not to hire the private cars.
D. Because they wanted to make their main complaints known to the authority.
25. The author’s attitude to banning internet car-hiring service is __________.
A. positive B. negative C. neutral D. unclear
26. Which of the following statements is True?
A. All the taxi drivers in China benefit a lot from taxi-hiring apps.
B. Taxi drivers mainly complained about the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy by the government.
C. The Internet-based car-hiring services have become popular all over China.
D. The Internet-based car-hiring services are challenging the traditional taxi industry.
27. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. Shenyang forbade apps-based car rental companies
B. Shanghai is the second city banning Didi Zhuanche
C. it is not difficult to picture the apps-based car rental companies illegal
D. some international investment companies have strong faith in the future of apps-based car rental companies
