高三英语上学期上册试题

请阅读下面短文,并以Our Life Rests on Our Choice为题,用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Life is a matter of choice. Seemingly, it means a choice of concrete (具体的) things. But in fact, it means choosing a way of life. Life is to be lived and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the threat from the life-and death disease --- SARS. Yet, even during those dreadful times, some suffering people remained optimistic. Instead of wearing white masks, some people turned to colorful ones, and thus displayed a happy mood. And some creative people dubbed SARS to mean “SMILE AND REMAIN SMILING.” People who survive these kinds of circumstances decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the hardships.

Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid unexpected disasters and adversities (逆境), we do have the right to choose to live optimistically, to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day.

When the opportunity arose for me to do some summer traveling, my first urge was to southeast Asia. Being budget-conscious, I eventually decided on Thailand.

I’d been introduced to the country by the well-received 2010 Thai film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, which sleepily brings out a land in which a dreamy sense of the unknown is so obvious and superstition(迷信) is not only a natural response, but a wise one.

On the warm and rainy island of Phuket, I found the best way to access Thailand’s treasures was by motorbike. I rented one for four days for about 200 RMB and went on a tour guided mainly by fantasy.

The Thailand I saw by motorbike was one where religion is ever-present. Though Buddhism is the country’s official religion, the footprints of other faiths can be found all over. Statues of the Hindu gods Shiva and Ganesha aren’t uncommon in the country’s large number of Buddhist temples, and Muslim places of worship are splendidly equipped in communities in Thailand’s south.

My motorbike allowed me to do more than just see and feel Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, it also allowed me to taste it. Tourism is a leading industry in Thailand, so in top destinations like Chiang Mai, Phuket and Bangkok, there are plenty of restaurants that appeal to international visitors with easy and familiar eats, especially around hotels and hostels. Finding something that tastes truly authentic, fresh prawns cooked in yellow curry and served with spicy beans, for example, is made much easier with a motorbike.

More than anything, my motorbike allowed me to escape the shabby, crowded spaces Thailand is famous for. Deep in the mountains, with the sound of my 125cc engine melting off into the jungle, I found the Thailand I wanted, calm, fascinating and steaming with an ancient temptation.

Thailand is a place thick with mood and myth,  and if you’re wiling to walk in, you’ll be rewarded.

25. What attracted the author towards Thailand?

   A. A Thai film.                       B. Thai food.

   C. Thai Buddhism.                    D. Thai history.

26. We learn from Paragraph 4 that ________.

   A. Hindu is resisted in Thailand          B. Thailand is a holy land of religion

   C. Thailand is a motorcycle country.      D. Muslim exists mainly in Thailand’s north

27. The author writes the text of share his _______ in Thailand.

   A. mysterious inspection               B. wonderful investigation

   C. fantastic motorbike ride              D. authentic sights and tastes

A rich landowner decided to leave possessions to one of his two sons. As he lay on the deathbed, he called the two young men to him     59     the break of dawn and even before the cock could crow (鸣叫). He then said, I will leave all my wealth to the one     60     can best fill this room. It was in this room     61      I made plans on how to build up my fortune. Not an inch must     62     (leave) uncovered. As I am getting     63    (weak) by the hour you both must come back by midnight. He handed them a small piece of silver and an empty bag to put their purchases in. They both went out and    64     (hurry) came back with their purchases.     65     (bring) the straw, the elder began to spread it about the floor,    66      far from filling the room. It did not even cover half the space. This is no use, son, said the father, and let me see how    67      brother fills the room. The younger son took     68     his bag a large candle, set it on the table in the centre of the room and lit it. A brilliant bright light filled up the whole room. The father was delighted and exclaimed, Son, I am sure you will use the wealth well.

Learning to read and write is a complex process, which can be disrupted in various ways, leading to disorders known as dyslexia and dysgraphia(读写障碍). Two new studies, published in a recent special issue of Elsevier's Cortex provide evidence of this variety, suggesting that effective treatment needs to take it into account.

A group of researchers from the Universities of Bari and Rome in Italy studied the reading and writing abilities of 33 Italian dyslexic children, comparing their performance with that of children with normal reading ability. Italian is an "orthographically transparent" language, meaning that letters tend to correspond to the same sounds, whereas many letters in the English alphabet change their sound from word to word (like the "c" in car and city). However, the new study showed that even in Italian, in which it is relatively straightforward to convert sounds into letters, children still have difficulty in spelling. Younger children with dyslexia generally performed worse than proficient readers; however, the older ones showed a more selective impairment when spelling words, suggesting that knowledge of vocabulary may be more important in spelling than previously thought.

The other study, from Tel Aviv University, Israel, provided the first systematic description of a type of reading disorder called "attentional dyslexia" in which children identify letters correctly, but the letters jump between words on the page, e.g., "kind wing" is read as "wind king". Teachers and neuron-psychologists often notice that children substitute letters when reading, but in this type of dyslexia the substitutions are not caused by inability to identify letters or convert them into sounds; they result from migrations of letters between words. The findings showed that letters would mostly migrate to the same position in another word, so the first letter of one word would switch places with the first letter of another word. Awareness to the existence of this type of dyslexia is important, because it suggests a straightforward way to assist these children in reading —— by presenting a ‎single word at a time, e.g., with the help of a word-sized window cut in a piece of cardboard.

58. We know from the first new study that __________.

A. Italian is easier to learn in comparison with English

B. knowledge of vocabulary has a close link with spelling

C. in Italian each letter has only one correspondent sound

D. children with normal reading ability have no trouble in converting letters into sounds

59. As is inferred from the passage, ___________.

A. many people cannot distinguish learning to read and learning to write

B. converting letters into sounds is more difficult than the other way round

C. younger children usually have a poorer knowledge of vocabulary

D. in the past not enough attention is paid to knowledge of vocabulary

60. In “attentional dyslexia”, children ___________.

A. do not pay enough attention to the meaning of each word

B. are not capable of telling letters apart

C. can not change letters into sounds accordingly

D. tend to transfer the first letter from one word to another

My Italian Grandmother was a wonderful woman. 61 a boy I always felt blessed growing up in her home. She worked hardlaughed loud, and was never afraid of 62 life threw at her.

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours.    36    In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Psychologists are studying this complex phenomenon, and have identified three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situation-for example, family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place.   37

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the others, chronic (the opposite of "temporary") usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause.   38   Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts, for example, friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more.   39

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons. They are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness as heart disease.   40

A. It is very difficult to deal with.

B. They question their popularity.

C. This kind of loneliness is not serious.

D. They don' t think they are in need of them.

E. People who experience it have problems socializing and becoming close to others.

F. What's more, temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

G. Although it can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

We all, at one time or another, have pretended to be a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults, in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a song that I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I am moving along to the rhythm. Most of the time, I do this on my way to work.

Yes, that is true. I will be in my nice work clothes, jamming while driving or stopping at a traffic light. I get weird looks from some people and others laugh. Personally, I love to get lost in the rhythm of a song which leads me to share with you the importance of being silly!

The definition for the word silly, according to the dictionary is: stupid, foolish and nonsensical. I know many people do not want to look foolish. So they walk around all serious, which in all honesty, is foolish!

No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfect. I don’t care how educated, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal (节俭的), how rich, and so on… No one is perfect! So why pretend to be something you are not?

Life is so short… You never know when this beautiful journey will be over, so why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity (呆板)? Here is a quote by Souza, that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life:

Dance as though no one is watching you

Love as though you have never been hurt before

Sing as though no one can hear you

Live as though heaven is on earth

When we were kids, we had no idea of what limitations were and we had no care in the world so we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to others. However, as we grew up, we lost that childlike innocence.

So don’t lose the child that still lives within you. The next time you feel down, go turn on your favorite song, and sing and dance along like there is no tomorrow. Or watch something that makes you laugh. Laughter is the best medicine to whatever ails (使痛苦) you and nothing is better than laughing so hard that your tummy (肚子) hurts. Trust me, you will feel a whole lot better, and who doesn’t want to feel good?

61. According to the passage, what does the writer usually do?

  A. He pretends to be a rock star.                         B. He dances in his own home.

  C. He sings songs while going to work.                D. He gets jammed on his way to work.

62. What do other people think of the writer?

  A. They think that the writer is strange.           B. They look down upon the writer.

  C. They believe that the writer is lonely.          D. No one is interested in the writer.

63. What is the writer’s opinion about the people who look very serious?

  A. They are honest.                                       B. They are silly.

  C. They are perfect.                                      D. They are educated.

64. The writer quotes Souza to show that ________.

  A. life is a beautiful journey                            B. life is full of rigidity

  C. life is like a great recipe                             D. life is to be treasured

You use her as a shoulder to cry on. She texts you back with casual jokes. But she, Xiaoice, is only a virtual chatbot(虚拟聊天机器人).

Xiaoice, Microsoft’s latest artificial intelligence robot, was briefly released in 2014, and returned to WeChat in 2015, where she became a big hit. Millions of young Chinese now exchange messages with her daily, The New York Times reported. On WeChat, Xiaoice is an official account. After following it, users can start text-based conversations with Xiaoice.

“Her incredible learning ability was why people loved to talk with Xiaoice,” Liu Jinchang, a researcher at High-tech Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told China Daily. Apart from her ability to identify photos and send emojis(表情符号)in conversations, Xiaoice gains 45 percent of her knowledge from interacting with users, China Daily reported.

Chatbot programs first appeared in the mid-1960s in the US. Driven by top tech companies, they are becoming smarter and more common. For instance, IBM’s latest artificial intelligence program served as an academic consultant at Australia’s Deakin University, answering students’ questions about course schedules and financial aid. Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa have been used as voice assistants who can read news, play music and even make jokes for their users.

These programs are expected to move beyond smartphones, into televisions, cars and living rooms, The New York Times pointed out. However, it may take decades before scientists develop a “Samantha”, the advanced chatbot seen in the fiction film Her. In the film, Samantha has a romantic relationship with her user played by US actor Joaquin Phoenix. Many viewers were enthusiastic about this fantasy of virtual soul mates.

Scientists have discovered that__61  (stay) in the cold could help us lose weight. Researchers at the University of California found that exposure to the cold increases levels of a protein that helps form brown fat--the type of fat that produces heat and keeps us warm. Brown fat burns energy,   62  helps us lose weight. White fat stores extra energy, which results  63    weight gain. The researchers said that because air conditioning and heating give us constant,    64    (comfort) temperatures, our body’s need for brown fat has decreased. They found that: “Outdoor workers in northern Finland who  65   (expose) to cold temperature have  66    significant amount of brown fat when  67  (compare) to same-aged indoor workers.” The research was conducted on two different control groups of mice.   68  group was injected with the protein that helps create brown fat. This group later gained 30% less weight after both groups were fed high-fat diets. The researchers say this could be good news in the fight against obesity. People who are obese have  69  (low) levels of brown fat than thinner people. Head researcher Hei Sook Sul said, “This protein could become an important target for research into the treatment and prevention of obesity and obesity-related diseases.” She added, “If you can somehow increase levels of this protein, you could  70   (possible) lose more weight even if eating the same amount of food.”

The discovery was made in the 1950s, while the ________ of it was not recognized until half a century later.

  A. sacrifice                B. difference                 C. significance                     D. insurance
