高三英语上学期上册试题

The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to present all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on earth.

An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if, in his word, “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill(孔) deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above 0ºC. The seeds will be protected behind walls a meter thick and high-security door.

The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below 0ºC. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.

Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s safest gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first put forward the idea in the 1980s. But safety concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

24Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?

DA New Way to Feed the World

Disappointed with delays in Sacramento (the capital of California), Bay Area officials said Thursday they planned to take matters into their own hands to regulate the region’s growing piles of electronic waste.

A San Jose council woman and a San Francisco supervisor said they would propose new local plans aimed at controlling electronic waste if the California law-making body fails to act on two bills delayed in the Assembly. They are among a growing number of California cities and countries that have expressed the same intention

Environmentalists and local governments are increasingly concerned about the danger caused by old electronic devices and the cost of safely recycling those products. An estimated 6 million televisions and computers are stocked in California homes, and an additional 6,000 to 7,000 computers become outdated every day. The machines contain high levels of lead () and other dangerous substances, and are already banned from California landfills.

A bill by Senator (参议员) Byron Sher would require consumers to pay a recycling fee of up to $30 on every new machine containing a cathode ray tube. Used in almost all video monitors and televisions, those devices contain four to eight pounds of lead each. The fees would go toward setting up recycling programs, providing grants to non-profit agencies that reuse the tubes and rewarding manufacturers that encourage recycling.

A separate bill by Los Angeles-area Senator Gloria Romero would require high-tech manufacturers to develop programs to recycle so-called e-waste. If passed, the measures would put California at the forefront of national efforts to manage the refuse of the electronic age.

But high-tech groups, including the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and the American Electronics Association, oppose the measures, arguing that fees of up to $30 will drive consumers to online, out-of-state shops.

“What really needs to occur is consumer education. Most consumers are unaware they’re not supposed to throw computers in the dust bin,” said Roxanne Gould, vice president of government relations for the electronics association.

Computer recycling should be a local effort and part of residential waste collection programs, she added. Recycling electronic waste is a dangerous and specialized matter, and environmentalists maintain the state must support recycling efforts and ensure that the job isn’t contracted to junk dealers who send the poisonous parts overseas.

“The graveyard of the high-tech revolution is ending up in rural China,” said Ted Smith, director of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. His group is pushing for some refinement to Sher’s bill that would prevent the export of e-waste.

63. How would Bay Area officials deal with the problem of e-waste? ____________.

A. To get enough support to pass the delayed bills.

B. To persuade the lawmakers of the California Assembly.

C. To make relevant local regulations by themselves.

D. To put pressure on manufacturers of electronic devices.

64. What do the two bills delayed in the California Assembly both concern? _________.

A. The reprocessing of the huge amounts of electronic waste in the state.

B. The regulations on dumping dangerous substances into landfills.

C. The funding of local initiatives to reuse waste electronic devices.

D. The sales of the second-hand electronic devices to foreign countries.

65. High-tech groups believe that if an extra fee is charged on every TV or computer purchased in California, consumers will ______________.

A. hesitate to upgrade their computers         B. abandon online shopping

C. strongly protest against such a charge       D. buy them from other states

66. We learn from the passage that much of California’s electronic waste has been ________.

A. dumped into local landfills               B. exported to foreign countries

C. collected by non-profit agencies           D. recycled by computer manufacturers

Nowadays more and more people are talking about genetically modified foods ( GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms (有机体), which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a nonspecific but stable change. For many people, the hightech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature.

In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the U. S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle.

However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fastgrowing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks?

The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don' t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defeats. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness.

How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.

The black taxi or cab is one of the most famous symbols in London. In the 17th century, London saw its first black cabs but these were very different from today’s vehicles because they were pulled by horses.

However, their influence is still felt today because in 1679, the British government passed a law requiring all vehicles to pass a test to make sure they were safe for passengers. This law is still in force today. Also, the very earliest cars were called “horseless carriages”  because they were very much like the shape of the carriages formerly pulled by horses.

Over the years, the design of the London black cab has changed; perhaps the biggest improvement is that the modern cab has wheelchair access. Even so, the basic image is still the same, a black cab that stands for a tradition of service and efficiency of which the London “cabbies” are justifiably(无可非议地) proud. In fact, the cabbies are some of the mist highly trained people in London. Before anyone is given a license to drive a black cab, a person must pass a test called “The Knowledge”. This involves learning by heart the 320 main routes, and all their tourist attractions in central London. During the test, drivers are not allowed to receive radio assistance or to use satellite navigation. This test is so difficult. It takes some people years to learn all the information. In London, you will often see men riding around on motorbikes with a map clipped onto its handlebars. These are “Knowledge boys”---people trying to learn all the routes so they can pass the test.

So the next time you take a black cab, don’t be surprised that the cabbie seems to be very widely read and full of wisdom. After all, he had to passThe Knowledgeto get his license.

34. In order to pass“ The Knowledge”, drivers must_____.

   A. be familiar with all routes in London

   B. begin practicing on their motorbikes

   C. receive radio assistance

   D. use satellite navigation

35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

   A. All the cab drivers are full of wisdom.

   B. It’s quite easy to hire a cab in London.

   C. It’s hard to pass“ The Knowledge” test.

   D. The cab drivers are pleasant to talk with.

How do your children deal with money? How can parents help their children understand money? As far as I’m concerned,    1    So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.

   * The basic function of money
Explain the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the thing he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收银员).    2    When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.

    * Money lessons
Approach money lessons with openness and honesty.     3    If you must say no to a childs request to spend money, explain,You have enough toy trucks for now. Or, if the request is for many different things, say. You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.

     *    4
Begin at the grocery store. Pick out similar brands of a producta name-brand butter and a generic(无商标产品), for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money.   5    If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

A. Permit the child to choose between them.
B. Wise decision.
C. Tell your child why he can
or cannot have certain things.
D. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you
.
