Dear editor,

I have offered a scholarship by a university abroad for my further education. Hundreds of students took exams for it, but only a few was chosen and I was one of them. However, my parents are strong against me going there. They all think it is too far away and that I can’t imagine me living alone. Instead of, they advise me to study at the city where we live now. I know they love me a lot, and I don’t understand why they disagree with my decisions this time. How can I persuade them?

My father, who is already in his fifties, live in the countryside. Despite the fact that his school time adds up to only one year, he knows that knowledge is great importance to young people, as a result of which he always encourages me to study hard. To ensure that I can focus on my study, my father does whichever he can do for him. Once he was bad ill and the doctor asked him to stay in the bed for several days. When I got home to see him, I found him worked in the fields. Such deeply moved was I that I couldn’t help bursting into tear. This is my father, a simple, honest or hardworking person.

Steve Jobs made technology fun. The co-founder of Apple died on October 5, 2011 at the age of fifty six. He had fought for years against cancer. Mourners gathered outside his house in Palo Alto, California and Apple stores around the world.

Tim Bajarin, president of a high-tech research and consulting company, said "If you actually look at a tech leader, they're really happy if they have one hit in their lifeSteve Jobs has the Apple II, the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad and Pixar."

Steve Jobs was a college dropout. He was adopted by a machinist and his wife, an accountant. They supported his early interest in electronics.

He and his friend Steve Wozniak started Apple Computer—now just called Apple in 1976. They stayed at the company until 1985. That year Steve Wozniak returned to college and Steve Jobs left in a dispute with the chief executive. Mr. Jobs then formed his own company, called NeXT Computer. He rejoined Apple in 1997 after it bought NeXT. He helped remake Apple from a business that was in bad shape then to one of the most valuable companies in the world today.

Steve Wozniak, speaking on CNN, remembered his longtime friend as a "great visionary and leader'' and a "marketing genius".

President Obama said in a statement: "By building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the Internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun."

David Carroll is a professor at Parsons School of Design in New York City. He says Steve Jobs not only revolutionized technology, he also revolutionized American business. "The fact that he was able to redesign American commerce top to bottom and across is really amazing. He probably will be considered an industrial giant on the scale of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, so one of the great of all time."

Love is just a thread

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he’s very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(被子). I silently sat down beside her and looked at her. “Mom, I have a question to ask you,” I said after a while. “What?” she replied, still doing her work. “Is there love between you and Dad?”

My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately but continued to sew the quilt.

I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment.

Imagine a world in which there were suddenly no emotion — a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hateTry to imagine the consequences of such a transformationPeople might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficialThey could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishmentsSociety would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and supportHuman relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds among members of groupsSociety's economic underpinnings (支柱) would be destroyed: since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive (动力) to workIn fact, there would be no incentives of any kind, for as we will see, incentives mean a capacity to enjoy them.

In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instruments of our survival and adaptationEmotions structure the world for us in important waysAs individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotionsTrue, we consider the length, shape, size or texture, but an object's physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us — hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyfulWe also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall societyOut of our emotional experience with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are "good" and others are "bad", and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life — from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will acceptIn fact, society uses our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itselfIt gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, and uses the legal penal (刑法的) system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?

Apeople would not be able to tell the physical aspects of objects

BPeople would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful to them

C$ 10 million is equal to $ 10 in a world without emotions

DThere would be full of lies, arguments and violence

2In can be inferred from the passage that the economic foundation of society is dependent on ________.

  Athe ability to make money

  Bthe capacity to work

  Cthe motivation to work

  Dour emotional experiences

3Why are the emotional aspects of an object more important than its physical aspects?

AThey help society use its members for more profit.

BThey encourage us to perform important tasks in the war.

CThey help to perfect the legal and penal system to make people afraid.

DThey help us adapt our behaviors to the world surrounding us.

4What is the text mainly about?

APeople could only live in a world with emotions.

BPeople would always do bad things in the emotionless world.

CEmotions are very important in the world.

DEmotions structure the world for us in important ways.

Skiing is the sport I like best. I live in a small village in the mountains which there is a lot of snows and I

can ski every day. Skiing is a great fun for people who enjoy being outdoors. Speeding down the mountains

makes you feel as a bird. And another good thing about skiing is that it help you relax. Being out in the fresh

air makes you forget your problems. However, learn to ski can sometimes be dangerously as you might hurt

yourself. Sometimes it is also difficult and tired because you need many time to practice. To sum up, although

skiing can sometimes be difficult, I think it’s excellent way to exercise.

After studying the daily habits of 177 self-made millionaires over the course of five years, Thomas C. Corley found that they avoid one costly habit: procrastination (拖延症).

“It prevents even the most talented individuals from realizing success in life,” he writes in his upcoming book, “Change Your Habits, Change Your Life.”

This goes hand-in-hand with author Napoleon Hill’s claim that the wealthiest people are also the most decisive people.

Out of the 500 millionaires Hill studied in the early 20th century, “Every one of them had the habit of reaching decisions quickly,” Hill wrote in his 1937 classic, “Think and Grow Rich.”

One of the major causes of procrastination is lack of passion, Corley emphasizes: “We simply like to do the things we like to do and we put off the things we do not like to do.”

“According to Gallup, only 13% of employees are ‘engaged’ in their jobs, or emotionally invested in their work,” Corley writes.

“Whether you realize it or not, procrastination is a big reason why you are struggling financially in life. It damages your credibility with employers and fellow colleagues at work. It also affects the quality of your work and this affects the business you or your employer receive from customers, clients, and business relationships.”

The good news is that anyone can overcome procrastination – and it’s simpler than you may think. He also notes that “the voice of procrastination screams just as loud and clear in the minds of those who excel in life as it does in the minds of those who do not.”

How do they silence it? They rely on “to-do” lists to get things done. They create firm deadlines, and they meet with “accountability partners” to ensure they’re sticking to their goals and deadlines, Corley says.

Nearly everyone is susceptible to procrastination – but fighting against it can make all the difference.

Last summer, I spent an afternoon with my daughter, Ava Scarlett. As her mother, I know about her true nature, but you can always learn new things about your child through how she makes the tough

I asked, “Which would you rather have? All the Barbies (toys girls like much) or all the cake? Ava had a wrinkle formed on her nose. It wasn’t a fair question, of course, but I was curious.

My daughter is seven years old, and like many kids her age, she has a red-hot love of barbies. I sometimes worry about what Mattel’s plastic princess and her straight, blond hair and unrealistic measurements will don to my daughter’s developing psyche.

My daughter, like many kids her age, is fascinated with cakes of all kinds. But it’s not about eating them—or not solely(单独地). She wants to be the person baking amazing shapes and colors. Unblinking, her eyes shine as show watches chocolate.

Ava Scarlett turned, staring at me with her answer in mind. And it was good. “Why can’t we have both and share with everyone who wants?”

My daughter always splits her cookie in two so her brother can have some. She offers me her last bite of cucumber, even though it’s her favorite vegetable. She wants us to know how much she cares for us-each of us. and she even makes the list of loved ones who will get to have her dream cakes.

Truth to be told, we don’t bake a whole lot in our house. But given the opportunity, Ava Scarlett is satisfied with baking cakes for the family. Today, it’s dinner: she has declared herself in charge of beating the egg for dinner.

Carefully, she carries her little white chair over to the fridge. The chair isn’t heavy, and she’s now big enough to lift it easily-no more dragging it across the floor. Looking into the wire basket of brown and white eggs we keep in the fridge, Ava Scarlett has a question of her own.

“Can I choose any egg I want?”

   “Of course.”

She takes a long moment.” I think I’ll choose a brown one, because I love my mother.” I blink----Ava Scarlett often doesn’t realize that she is also brown. I remember wanting to be a standard Barbie when I was seven, too, which is really just a way of saying, “I don’t want to feel different.”

I give my daughter a quick smile. She does her best and then reaches in to pick one out. I know she did so to express her love for me and our family. At this moment, I choose to accept her comment as a generous one. Ava Scarlett’s desire is for people around her to be as happy as possible. She wants things to be smooth. These days, though she’d rather be Barbie than a brown egg, she’d never want me to feel abandoned by her. This little apple hasn’t fallen very far from my tree. It’s amazing what your children mirror back.

I hand Ava Scarlett a fork. “Did you know that eggs come in all kinds of colors and shapes? They’re all exactly the same on the inside, though. Just like people.”

   “I know.” She said.

I can almost hear the gears in her head turning my words over and around. Of course, eggs are the same on the inside, just like people, she’s thinking. I know she understands this.

66. What made the author so worried?

   A. That her daughter loves only Barbies and ignores other toys.

   B. That Barbies would have a negative effect on her daughter.

   D. That her daughter doesn’t know how to share

67. How does the author’s express love to her?

   A. By selecting a brown egg

   B. By sharing her cookie with her

   C. By giving up her favorite Barbies

   D. By giving good comments to please her

68. How does the author feel about her daughter’s egg-choosing answer?

   A. It’s surprising but comforting

   B . It’s painful but understandable

   C. It’s bitter and disappointing

   D. It’s worrying and annoying

69. What does “She’d rather be a Barbie than a brown egg” mean?

   A. She’d rather play toys than make the dinner

B .She’s rather abandon her desire for beauty

70. What would be the most appropriate title for this selection?

How to Memorize Things Quicker Than Other People

The following is my advice for you.

Step 1: Preparation

36   For most people, this means choosing an area with few distractions, though some people do advance greatly by learning in public areas. Figure out what is most conducive to your learning so that you can get started.

Step 2: Record what you’re memorizing

This is especially useful if you’re trying to memorize information from a lecture. Use a tape recorder to track all of the acquired facts being spoken and listen to it.   37   Obviously, this is most helpful for auditory(听觉的) learners, and it’s also useful because it ensures that you’re getting more context from a lecture that will help you learn the information faster.

Step 3: Write everything down

Before you start trying to recall everything from memory, write and re-write the information. This will help you become more familiar with what you’re trying to memorize.  38   This is most useful for experiential learners.

Step 4:   39

Now that you have everything written down in one set of notes, separate them into sections. This is ideal for visual learners, especially if you use color coding to distinguish between subjects.   40

A. Separate your notes.

B. If you’re trying to memorize a speech, record your reading of the speech and listen to the record.

C. Doing this while listening to your tape recorder can also help you keep a lot of the data.

D. To memorize, first you should choose an area.

E. Section your notes.

F. This will help you break everything down and start classing the information being recorded in your brain.

G. To improve your memorization, pay close attention to which environment you choose.

I learned to do wood work when I was very young.

I remember I made my first project—a small table when I was 9 years old. I was so  41  of it that I looked upon it as if I had created a(an)  42 . It was absolutely beautiful and it had taken me six weeks to  43  it. I could hardly wait to give it to Mother Winters as a(an)  44  . She was the head mistress of our orphanage(孤儿院), who was always kind but  45  with us.

As the tables were not dry from the clear coating(清漆), our woodworking teacher told us to wait a few days before taking them to our dormitories. But I was just so  46  and happy that I couldn’t wait I dashed out like a  47 , carrying my table, smiling from ear to ear.

When I reached the dormitory I placed the little table beside my bed. I was  48  it when Mother Winters entered. She walked over to the table. Running her hand  49 it, she noticed that it was still wet.

“Were you  50  to bring this home?” she asked.

“No, ma’am,” I  51  with my head down.

She ordered me to throw the table out and so I did. After she left, I immediately opened the door to get it back. There was  52  stuck all over. I brushed and cried, but the dirt would not come off.

I hid the table in my closet and never  53  it. However, a year later during a cleaning-up, it was discovered. Painfully, I had to give the table to Mother Henderson, my houseparent, thinking that she would  54  it away.

Kate Hashimoto was picking up a few groceries at the Upper West Side Food Emporium when she ran into a friend. Hey Kate, do you like wraps? Heres a chicken wrap,’’ her pal said. But be careful, its kind of wet. They werent in the food store. They were in front of the store, digging through three overflowing trash bins.

Hashimoto Dumpster-dives(拾荒) for all her food, doesnt use toilet paper or do laundry, and hasnt bought makeups in 10 years. She doesnt have to live this way shes an employed CPA(注册会计师). Ive always been money-saving, but it was when I was fired that I became extreme, Hashimoto explained. No job is guaranteed, so I live as if I could be fired at any time.

Manhattan, she said, is a gold mine for dumpster divers.Consumers in wealthy areas expect their products to be perfect, so upscale stores throw out a lot of items that are still good.New York can be the most expensive place to live, but it can also be the least expensive if you know how to work the system.

Hashimoto let the reporter of a newspaper spend a day with her learning how to work the system. She lives in Harlem, where she bought a studio in 2010 and paid it off in nine months, but walks down to the Upper West Side three times a week for good, free food. Her other money-saving methods include using soap to wash herself after using the toilet, taking surveys online to earn gift cards, participating in medical trials, testing products for free samples, cutting her own hair, washing her clothes while she showers, and running to work to avoid using subway. I was very angry about the latest round of subway fare rises, she said.

Hashimoto does have her limits. Her furniture is a collection of found free gifts but she wont take an old mattress for fear of bedbugs, and sleeps instead on used yoga mats. And she wont stay in a relationship with a boyfriend for free meals.Ive been in a relationship where I stayed because I was getting free gifts, but I got out of it, she says. Its better to be single and dumpster-diving than to be with someone you cant stand.
