My sister Grace Halloran spent most of her teen years in and out of the juvenile institutions(少管所) for minor offenses but, at 18 she was sent to prison for stealing a car. After three years behind the bars, she was released. Only a few years later, she was given a sentence far worse—she had an incurable and progressive disorder and would be totally blind. Meanwhile, Grace was also happily pregnant but terrified she would never see her child’s face. She believed she would succeed as a mother, although “success” had never been in her vocabulary before. She managed well despite fading vision.

For years she kept consulting specialists about her eye problems, only to be told that her son would also be blind by the time he was a teenager. She swore to find something, anything, to prevent him from facing her fate. When conventional medicine offered no hope, Grace began a personal quest. She entered a local college. The office for disabled students had her reading assignments put on cassette tapes so that she could listen and learn. She began studying anatomy, physiology and other health sciences. Everyone knowing her was astonished at her persistence to educate herself, restore her vision and keep focused on raising a son who would have perfect eyesight.

Eventually Grace’s own way worked and she earned the Ph. D. in Holistic Health for her successful work in improving serious eye disorder. Her eyesight slowly improved so much that she was able to qualify for a driving license. Even better, her son had perfect vision and was accepted into the Air Force.

23. What is the power of Grace’s recovery?

   A. Her love for her son.             B. Her patience as a mother.

There are all sorts of good sensible reasons to avoid getting angry. Not only does it make us feel bad, it also makes us do stupid things without noticing the risks and it can be self-destructive ( 毁坏性的). ___ 36____ But like all emotions, anger has its purposes, which can be used for good effects.
      Anger is a motivating force.

悲观的) about the future and expect further terrors.
      Anger can benefit relationships.
Society tells us anger is dangerous and we should hide it .The problem is that when we hide our anger, our partner doesn't know he's done something wrong. And so he keeps doing it.     39    The expression of anger, if reasonable and aimed at finding a solution, can actually benefit and strengthen relationships.
      Anger provides self-understanding.
Anger can also provide understanding into ourselves, if we allow it. Getting angry leads to a positive outcome. Anger help discover our own faults. If we can notice when we get angry and why, then we can learn what to do to improve our lives.         _____40

I was on a plane that was about to take off when my phone rang. It was my neighbor saying I needed to get to the hospital, for my wife Mary  61  (take) to hospital, and when I arrived doctors were trying to make  62  (she) come back to consciousness, but it was no good.

I explained to my  63  (child) that Mummy had died. Within hours they were running around the garden,  64 (chat) with their granddad while I was in a deep sorrow. I went through the motions of being a dad---cooking, cleaning, washing—but inside I felt hollow. One of the hardest things  65  (cope) with was that the boys had lost their mother. Mary and I were everyone’s favorite couple. The physical loss of not having her around was  66  (extreme) painful. For a year, I was in the  67  (deep) of misery. Then I decided that we had to get through this. I began to late Emma,  ___68   had been a childhood friend, and Mickey couldn’t wait for us to get married so he could call her Mum. It wasn’t long before George warmed to her, too---she is wonderful with them. Two years later we got married and life started to look rosy. Emma and I have had two boys to add  69  our family.

We all have the concept that our lives are following  70  particular path, but sometimes it turns out it’s not going that way.

You’re growing up. That means you’re probably experiencing lots of changes, all at once. Your body is changing. It might even seem as if your entire self is changing. It can be confusing and even scary.   36   And it’s good!

Growing up means that you can do more, learn more, and start to make your mark on the world. In order for that to happen, your body produces chemicals called hormones that help both body and mind grow. Hormone levels change constantly, rising and falling.   37   But it’s partly to blame for intense emotions, surprising reactions, and mood swings.

Because of the way your brain develops, it is somewhat ruled by emotion now and through your teen years. As a result, growing up can seem like an emotional roller coaster!   38

Take care of yourself. If you eat right, sleep enough, and get good exercise, your brain will be much more able to deal with the stress.

39   When you feel your moods swinging or you’re upset, or confused, some quiet time will allow you to gather your thoughts and get calmer.

Practice relaxing your body and deep breathing when you wake up and when you go to bed.  40   Plus, when stuff happens during the day, you’ll be able to calm yourself quickly with a deep breath or two before you react. Your body is changing.

ATake a time-out.

BBut the truth is, it happens to every teen.

CWork out regularly to keep physically fit.

DThis changing is needed for your body’s development.

EIt will help you fall asleep—and start the morning right.

FHere are a few things you can do to make the ride smoother.

GUsually, these feelings settle down when you realize what is going on.

Things to see

If you want to know more about the park, the Kilauea Visitor Center is surely a stop to make. It is a quarter of mile(402m)from the park entrance. There, you can see a great movie about real lava and learn about many guided walks and hikes around the park. You must check weather conditions and volcanic activity before hikes around the park. You must check weather conditions and volcanic activity before hike alone. If possible, you may drive down Chain of Craters Road to see lava flowing into the ocean.

Entrance to the park is 10.00 for each vehicle, 5.00 for those who travel on foot or ride a bicycle. Children under the age of 15 are free.

Safety in the highway is not something that is totally out of our control. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

17    People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.

Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car can really hurt or even kill you.    18   The safety belt’s main purpose is to pull you back if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of deadly injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes — the type of crash that kills the most drivers — when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy.    19   Effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink.    20   Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties (处罚)for drinking and driving.

A. That’s why safety belts should be worn.

B. How to drive safely?

C. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes.

D. How to protect ourselves in the highway?

    G. You are safer in a large car.

Most people know that Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice. However, few people know that she was also the mother of a Nobel Prize winner.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. She finished her high school education at the College of Sevigne in Paris.

Irene entered the University of Paris in 1914 to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(设备)to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military’s Medal by the French government.

In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.

Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. Like her mother, Irene was awarded a Nobel Prize, along with her husband, in 1935. Unfortunately, also like her mother, she developed leukemia because of her work with radioactivity(辐射能). Irene Joliot-Curie died from leukemia on March 17, 1956.

This morning I saw off my aunt at railway station. There were many passenger in the waiting room. I saw an old lady crying sad because she had lost her ticket and not able to afford another one. I was thinking about helping her when a man come up to comfort her. Then he bought her a ticket with his own money. The old Lady was so moving that she could hardly say a word. She grasped his hand and asked for his name or address. But he only smile and said, “It’s my pleasure.” Then he left away quickly. I was greatly moved by such a man he warmed others with his love.
