How to Communicate with Our Parents

Hello, everyone, Id like to share my ideas about the topic of how to communicate with our parents.

A taxi driver taught me a million dollar lesson in customer satisfaction and expectation. Motivational speakers charge thousands of dollars to give training to company executives and staff. It cost me a $12 taxi ride.

I had flown into Dallas for the purpose of calling on a customer. Time was limited and my plan included a quick turn-around trip from and back to the airport. A spotless taxi pulled up. The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As he got in the driver’s seat, he mentioned that the neatly-folded Wall Street Journal next to me was for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy. I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, “Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell.”

“You bet,” he replied, “I used to be in Microsoft. But I got tired of it, thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my position in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be. I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, helping people and feeling like I have done a full day’s work and done it well. I thought about my personal strengths and ... wham! I became a taxi driver. One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I could simply meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be GREAT in my business, I have to go above the customer’s expectations! I like both the sound and the return of being ‘great’ better than just getting by being ‘average’.”

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meetchat and go where we’ve never been beforeBut just as in face-to-face communicationthere are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.   36  Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes

For anything you’re about to sendask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is norewrite and reread 37   If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能)is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.   38  If it was caused by a disagreement with another membertry to fix the situation by politely discussing it.Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room

39  Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or all unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anythingEven if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.  40  At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions

AThe basic rule is simpletreat others in the same way you would want to be treated

BEveryone was new to the network once

CRepeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face

DIt’s natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

EWhen you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

FYou should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

GIf you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely

Most evenings, before watching late-night comedy or reading emails on his phone, Matt Nicoletti puts on a pair of orange-colored glasses that he bought for S8 on the Internet.

"My girlfriend thinks I look ridiculous in them," he said. But Mr.Nicoletti, a 30-year-old consultant in Denver, insists that the glasses, which can block certain wavelengths of light emitted by electronic screens, make it easier to sleep.

Studies have shown that such light, especially from the blue part of the spectrum (光谱),inhibits the body's production of melatonin(褪黑激素)which helps people fall asleep.Options arc growing for blocking blue light, though experts caution that few have been adequately tested for effectiveness and the best solution remains avoiding brightly lit electronics at night.

A Swiss study of 13 teenage boys, published in August in The Journal of Adolescent Health. showed that when the boys wore orange-colored glasses, also known as 'blue blockers' and shown to prevent melatonin, in the evening for a week, they felt "significantly more sleepy" than when they wore clear glasses. The boys looked at their screens, as teenagers tend to do, for at least a few hours on average before going to bed, and were monitored in the lab.

Older adults may be less affected by blue light, experts say, but blue light remains a problem for most people, and an earlier study of 20 adults aged 18 to 68 found that those who wore orange-colored glasses for three hours before bed improved their sleep quality considerably relative to a control group that wore yellow-colored lenses, which blocked only ultraviolet(紫外线)light.

LEDs used in devices such as smart phones, tablets and televisions tend to emit more blue light than incandescent products(白炽产品).LEDs are also increasingly popular as room lights, but "warm white" bulbs, with less blue, tend to be a better choice than "cool white" for nighttime use.The lighting company Philips also makes a reduced-blue LED bulb, meant to be usedfore bedtime."In theory, anything that will decrease that blue light exposure at night will be helpful." said Christopher Colwell, a scientist at the UCLA, "I know some gainers who swear by those orange-colored glasses."

But orange glasses are not a panacea(万能药).Dr.Skene said."It isn't just getting rid of the blue and everything's fine," she said. The intensity of light, in addition to color, can affect sleep, she said, and not all brands of orange-colored glasses have undergone enough independent testing for their ability to aid sleep.

During the daytime, experts say, exposure to blue light is good.Best of all is sunlight, which contains many different wavelengths of light."That's what our brain knows," said Kenneth P.Wright Jr., director of the sleep and chronobiology(生物钟学)lab at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

A 2013 study he led, published in the journal Current Biology, showed just how different things can be without nighttime lights. After participants had camped in the mountains for a week, their bodies began to prepare for sleep about two hours earlier than normal.

Short of cutting out all evening electronics, experts say, it's advisable to use a small screen rather than a large one; dim the screen and keep it as far away from the eyes as possible; and reduce the amount of time spent reading the device.

"If you can look at the iPhone for 10 minutes rather than three hours, that makes a lot of difference," Dr.Skene said.

If you are hungry, what do you do? Have your favorite-meal and stay quiet after that?

__36__. But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity sets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think “What happens next?”, “Why can't I think?”.

___37_. Why reading but not watching TV? It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from childhood. Since it develops other aspects of our life, we have to take help from reading

If you don’t think technology can improve your trip, meet Judy Williams. When she and her

husband recently checked into Blu Hotel in Zurich, a clerk asked them to sign the dotted line on a

room rate hundreds of dollars higher than their online offer.

“It was not a cheap stay,” says Williams, a lawyer from Billings, Mont. But it became more of

one after her husband fired up the Booking.com app he’d used to book their room on his smartphone.

“As soon as we showed him the cost, he honored it,” Williams says.

Technology may create challenges for travelers but it can also solve them. It’s more than

making sure of a hotel cost. The latest Booking.com can help users select hotels by location, make a

secure booking and view the confirmed (已确认的) cost so they never need to re-discuss their hotel

price.

Another pain point for travelers is traffic that eats away precious vacation time. There’s a new app called Commute which is aimed at users who have to make the same trip every day. But if you’re headed to Los Angeles or Honolulu, where visitors can easily get stuck in hours of heavy

traffic, Commute can help.

Just input basic information about your destination and expected leaving time, and the app

will start sending you traffic information 15 minutes before you leave. Testing Commute proved to

be a challenge for me, because my home address is about 900 miles from my place of work. But if

you have only a short distance to travel through a heavily populated area, you can use Commute to

avoid traffic jams.

Another source of travel-related problems is money. That’s particularly true when you’re

dealing with a foreign currency. The latest Travel Money Tracker helps travelers prevent currency

mix-ups. It immediately changes a country’s native currency to yours, so you know exactly how

much that Espresso (浓咖啡) in Milan costs in dollars. It can also warn you when you’re

overspending, which can sometimes be a problem when you’re on vacation. The only catch, of

course, is that you have to remember to record all your purchases.

Taken together, these apps solve some of the most common travel problems. But not all of

them. Some things, no smartphone can fix, which means I get to keep my job – for now at least.

12. What does the writer want to tell through the example of Judy Williams?

   A. The cost of Blu Hotel was higher than that of others.

   B. The clerk was very friendly and patient.

   C. The smartphones have many functions.

   D. Technology can make our trips better.

13. Commute is not suitable for those who_______________.

   A. have a long journey

   B. go on the same trip every day

   C. can easily get stuck in traffic jams

   D. travel a short distance downtown

14. What is the function of Travel Money Tracker?

   A. It tells people how much Espresso costs.

   B. It warns people when they are shopping.

   C. It changes the native currency to yours.

   D. It records all people’s purchases.

15. What is the purpose of this passage?

   A. To encourage people to travel.

   B. To introduce some new apps.

   C. To help people with technology problems.

   D. To provide people with traveling information.

On a day in Arkansas, some fishermen saw a bear cub. As hours went by, its mother didn’t return. So they called wildlife biologist Eastridge.

The bear cub was sick and hungry, weighing only five pounds and with his eyes not completely open. Eastridge called Lisa Stewart, who always makes room for a new cub.

She stopped having contact with the cub so he would not become too used to humans. Stewart cleaned his eyes and put him in a house alone. She named the bear Miracle because she thought it was a miracle that he had survived! Since Miracle was five months old, Stewart gave him bowls of food and another bowl of a special formula. Sometimes, Miracle would reach his head out of his house and take some formula or food. But he wasn’t eating much.

Miracle was too weak to be with other bears. So Stewart gave him a toy bear named Buddy. He took it into his house and covered it with straw. He fed Buddy, too. Stewart often found the toy covered in formula and berries and its ears full of apple chunks. Now that Miracle had Buddy, he came out of his house more often and wanted to eat.

After two months, Stewart introduced Miracle to other bears so they could learn from one another. She avoided any direct contact with Miracle and the other bears. Stewart wanted to make sure they stayed afraid of humans so they could go back into the wild again. She always hid behind a fence and threw food over the top secretly. The bears hunted for this food as they would soon do in the wild.

Five months later, Rick Eastridge returned to pick up a healthy Miracle and another bear named Rocky. Eastridge loaded the bears into bear boxes on his truck and transported them back to the wild. As soon as the bear boxes were opened, they ran for the woods — where they belonged.

25. A toy bear was given to Miracle in order to ________.

  A. rid Miracle of its fear of humans   B. develop his skills of making friends

  C. kill his lonely time in his house    D. remind him not to waste his food

26. Why did Stewart always give food to Miracle in secret?

  A. Because he was too weak to be frightened by humans.

  B. Because he could learn how to find food in the wild.

  C. Because she didn’t want to disturb his peaceful life.

  D. Because a good relationship could be developed.

27. Which can best describe Miracle when it was released into the wild?

  A. Healthy and skillful.             B. Fierce and greedy.

  C. Alert and eager.                 D. Strong and affectionate.

The connection shared by grandparents and grandchildren is something very special and despite the changing family situation, it still remains strong across generations. For most of us, our grandparents were our first best friends, the ones with whom we shared our secrets and our pain.

In majority of the cases, grandparents would have babysat(照看) their grandchildren while parents were busy working and didn't have much time for their children. Even as a kid grows up, the love and affection for grandparents never dies, and for many teens, visiting grandparents or living with them in the same house is a pleasure. Kedar Patwary, a mass communication student, says, "I often end up having long conversations with my grandfather about the evolution of Indian society and I really admire him for the patience with which he answers all my questions. "

Many teenagers feel that their parents treat them as grown-ups, while their grandparents give them much freedom.

Leela Narayanan, a grandmother, says that she loves to pamper her grandchildren and cook favorite dishes for them. She further adds that her eldest granddaughter, who is now 19, was brought up by her till she was four and the closeness they shared remains the same even now.

At times, the gap generation plays a negative role, when grandparents find it difficult adjusting to the modern lifestyle. Technology is what works against this relationship. Youngsters'  being crazy about with gadgets leaves them with no time for their loved ones.

Maria Kutty, is a grandmother to 12 kids. Her face lights up every time her grandchildren are mentioned. But she has one complaint.  "All my children stay close to me but when they come to visit and I want to spend time with them, I can't find them anywhere. They only have time for clickety-clackety things in their hands. Sometimes they listen to loud music and talk about things I don't understand. I feel very sad when I think of all those times," she says.

12. The author uses Kedar Patwary as an example ______.

C. to show grandparents get on well with grandchildren

D. to indicate grandparents are all good babysitters

13. What does the underlined word "pamper" mean in the passage?

A. Spoil.       B. Raise.       C. Manage.     D. Educate.

14. The gap generation sometimes is negative because_______.

A. grandchildren can 't fit in with modern lifestyle

B. grandparents are eager to know more technology

C. grandchildren are addicted to their digital products

D. grandparents spared no time with their grandchildren

15. How does the author develop the passage?

A. By giving example.       B. By following the order of time.

C. By making comparisons.   D. By his personal experience.

The Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that seeks to address the needs of the homeless population in the United States. It is a network of offices, some of which provide food and houses for the homeless population, and some of which fight for the passing of laws that of over two hundred million people living in the United States, up to three million are homeless-and the number is still growing. Since the late 1970s,fast rising house prices, large cuts in government supported housing programs, and economic recession(经济衰退)have made it impossible for many Americans to meet housing costs. Sadly, this has resulted in a number of persons being forced to leave their homes and/or unable to find new affordable homes. According to another research, families with children appear to be the fastest-growing part of the homeless population, making up 39% of it. The old idea of a homeless person, that of the single man who gets drunk all the time, is no longer true. A much lager part of the population now finds itself homeless. Even worse, once a person becomes homeless, he often finds it impossible to find a job, since most employers require anyone who wants a job from them to provide a home address on a job application.

29. The word "address" in the first line probably means          .

A. 39% of the population.                   B. 200 million people.

C. About 3 million people.                  D. About one-fifth of the population.

31. Homeless people often have difficulty finding a job because         .

A. they have no home addresses

B. they mostly have a drinking problem

C. they aren't supported by government programs

D. they often don't have enough work experience

32.. What is the main cause of the rising number of the homeless in the U.S.?

A. The passing of new housing laws.          B. The fast growth of family size.

C. The slow construction of houses.           D. The ever-rising price of housing.

Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down.“I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie.

Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.

The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around”Christie shared with me quietly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.

Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering (口吃) son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.

The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each childtalking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves (应得到) to be an only child at least once in a while.

Although some parents do keep track of their teen's online activitiesmost teenagers don't realize that websites may be monitored by schoolsprospective(未来的)employers or anyone else who might be interested in the teenager's lifestyle not just today but anytime in the future.

Most of us don't realize that the information that gets posted on the Internet may be deletedbut it doesn't disappear permanently.“The stuff is there forever”says Jamie Riehledirector of Web Publishing at Lycos.“It is backed up (备份)on servers and doesn't go away.”

Long long ago, there was a large mountainside, where rested an eagle's nest with four large eagle eggs. One day   41    earthquake rocked the mountain, causing one of the eggs to roll down the mountain to a chicken farm   42    (locate) in the valley below. The chickens were kind enough to care for the eagle's egg, and an old hen volunteered to nurture (哺育) and raise the large egg.

One day, the egg hatched and a beautiful eagle was born. Sadly,  43   , the eagle was raised to be a chicken. Soon, the eagle believed he was nothing more   44   a chicken. The eagle loved his present family, but his spirit cried out   45    more. While playing on the farm one day, the eagle happened to notice a group of mighty eagles soaring in the skies. "Oh," the eagle cried, "I wish I could soar like those birds."

The chickens roared with   46   (laugh), “You cannot soar with those birds. You are a chicken and chickens do not soar."

The eagle continued staring at his real family up above,   47   (dream) that he could be with them. Each time the eagle would let his dreams   48   (know), he was told it couldn't be done. That is   49    the eagle learned to believe. The eagle, after time, stopped dreaming and continued to live like a chicken. Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle passed away.

You become what you believe you are. So, if you ever dream of becoming an eagle, follow   50   dreams... not the words of a chicken.
