高三英语上学期上册试题

My wife and I moved into our home two years ago. We had a   41   with a lot of rocks. Very often when we have flowers, Denise or I would plant some between the rocksjust to   42   some color to the area.

Last summer, I found a tiny little plant in the yard that I could not immediately   43  . I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue   44   until we could find out what it was.

Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange   45  , it appeared to be a sunflower. I decided to   46   the weeds around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something   47  . The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin. It   48   had begun under a big   49   and grown under and around it to reach the   50  .

That’s when I   51   that if a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its   52   of developingwe too have the   53   to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we   54   to go and get what we need for growth.

We need to   55   ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like the   56  , it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had   57   in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be   58   of who and what we are, then the environment will begin to   59   us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks” in order to   60   our goals.

Britain’s oldest man made his first visit to London yesterday at the age of 101. Mr. John Evans had never found the time or money to make the trip from his home in Forest Fach, near Swansea. But, when British Rail offered him an all-expenses-paid birthday trip to the capital he just could not refuse.

He arrived at Paddington Station and smartly turned out in his best suit, favorite Panama hat and a red rose in his buttonhole. “It’s very exciting. There’s no doubt about it,” he said.

Until yesterday he had never been far from home, except for one trip to Aberdeen. “But I’ve been on the seas to that faraway land called Ilfracombe 21 miles from home,” he joked.

Mr Evans, who spent 60 years working as a miner in South Wales, almost made the journey to London once before, at the turn of the century. “There was a trip to the White City but it was ten shillings return from Swansea — too much I thought. All my money went to the family then,” he said.

During the next two days Mr. Evans will be taken on a short tour of London to see the sights. Top of his list is a visit to the House of Parliament organized by his MP, Mr. Gareth Wardell.

The only arrangement he does not care for is the wheelchair provided for him if he gets tired. “I don’t like the chair — people will think I am getting old. ” he said. His secret for a long and healthy life has been well publicized — no wine, no tobacco and no anger.

Before setting off from Swansea with his 76-year-old son, Amwell, he said jokingly, “I’m glad to see they’ve given me a return ticket. ”

  C. he couldn’t afford both the time and the money

  D. he believed “East or west, home is best”

42. Mr Evans didn’t like the wheelchair simply because _________.

  A. he was not used to traveling in it

  B. the wheelchair was of poor quality and not easy to operate

  C. he actually preferred walking to sitting in it at home

  D. he thought he was still young enough to manage the trip

43.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. Mr. Evans had to work hard to raise his family when young.

  B. The trip to London excited Mr. Evans very much.

  C. Mr. Evans could not really enjoy the trip because of his age.

  D. Humor was one of Mr. Evans’ characters.

44.The probable explanation to Mr. Evans’ long life lies in _________.

  A. his good living habits           B. his hard working for the family

  C. his sticking to his hometown       D. his living conditions near the Swansea

BEIJINGFamily planning officers will handle the illegal birth case of film director Zhang Yimou by following legal procedures, a government spokesman said on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

When asked to comment on Zhang’s case at a press conference, Yao Hongwen, spokesman for the National Health and Family Planning Commission(NHFPC), said “Every citizen is equal before the law and nobody is allowed to have privileges(特权)to give birth to more children than allowed.”

Yao’s comment came after media stories claimed that Zhang had remarried and fathered a total of seven children: one with his former wife, three with his present wife, Chen Ting, and another three from two lovers.

“The NHFPC’s attitude towards citizens’ birth violations(违法)is consistent and clear. Every Chinese citizen should obey and safeguard the seriousness of laws and regulations.” NHFPC spokesman Yao Hongwen said.

China’s family planning policy, introduced in the late 1970s to slow down the country’s growing population, limits most urban couples to one child and most rural couples to two. The policy was recently relaxed, allowing couples to have two children if one of them is an only child.

Those who break the policy face severe fines. The amount of the fine is generally several times the yearly annual income of the two spouses(配偶). Some media calculations put the fine that Zhang may face at as much as 160 million yuan(over $26 million).

Zhang’s birth case has caused criticism online about famous people who have more children than the policy allows.

In an open letter on December 1, Zhang admitted that the couple has two sons and daughter and they are willing to accept investigation and punishment according to China’s laws and regulations. He apologized to the public.

However, the letter denied that Zhang had lovers and was father to as many as seven children from various mothers.

Zhang, one of the “fifth generation” of Chinese filmmakers, made his first directorial work in 1987 with “Red Sorghum” and has won a number of award worldwide. He was chief director of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games.

25. The purpose of the news report is to_______.

A. claim that Zhang Yimou remarried and fathered a total of seven children

B. inform us that Zhang’s illegal birth case will be dealt with by the government

C. convince us that Zhang is a famous director and his case will be pardoned

D. confirm that Zhang’s illegal birth case has resulted in lots of criticism online

26. According to Yao Hongwen, which of the following statements is true?

A. Every Chinese citizen should obey and safeguard laws and regulations.

B. Few people have the privileges to give birth to more children than allowed.

C. China’s family planning policy has never been relaxed since introduced.

D. Zhang will be fined as much as 160 million yuan for his violations.

27. Judging from the recent relaxed policy, a couple_______.

A. can have as many as three children if they live in a rural area

B. will definitely be fined if they have two children nowadays

C. can give birth to two children if one of them is an only child

D. can only give birth to two children if they live in an urban area

Earlier this week, I wrapped up (圆满完成) a 5-day trip in San Francisco. I woke up a few hours before sunrise, drove through the darkness and out of the city, hiked for 30 minutes to the top of a hill overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and snapped(拍摄) this photo. As I stood there soaking in the early morning light, I was reminded of an important lesson.

When I arrived in San Francisco, I told myself, “Just take photos as you do other things.” My primary goal was to meet with friends and so I figured I could take pictures as we walked around the city. This resulted in exactly zero photos worth sharing. I had vague ideas like, “I’d like to do some street photography,” but I never went out with the intent of photographing something specific. Finally, on the last morning, I went out with the intent of capturing a specific picture and I ended up with something worth sharing. My mistake was that I assumed that because I wanted to take photos, I would end up getting a desirable result.111.Com]

How often do you this in your own life? We go to the gym to “work out” without trying to become better at something specific. We wish that we were more creative, but never work on a particular project. When you commit to a task, however, then the next step is obvious. You want to take a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise? Next step: find a good spot. You’ve found a good spot? Next step : wake up early and drive there.

This is perhaps the most shocking thing: if box yourself in, then you’ll begin to break out and achieve something greater than you ever imagined.

32. What’s the author’s original purpose of the trip?

   A. To take pictures       B. To attend lessons   C. To visit friends   D. To enjoy sunrise

33.What lesson did the author learn?

   A. A given task leads to achievement      B. Stick to your own decision111]

   C. Get ready for challenges              D. Hard work pays off

34. What are you advised to do first when you want to get stronger physically?

   A. Make a detailed outline                B. Go to work out immediately

   C. Discuss the ways with coaches           D. Choose a certain muscle group

35. What’s the function of the last paragraph?

   A. To introduce a new topic                 B. To draw a conclusion

   C. To make a suggestion                    D. To ask readers to reflect on something

You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.

The designer says he come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street ad saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬)built into a street lamp.” he said.

The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360°motion sensor on the biberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on my street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

October 15, 1970 was declared International White Cane Safety Day(IWCSD) for the first time by the President of the International Federation of the Blind (IFB). This date was adopted at the first convention of the IFB, held in Colombo on October 4, 1969. The object of the exercise is to enable the general public to have a better understanding of blindness and visual handicap, and to make people more aware of the white cane as a mobility aid.

Peguilly d'Herbemont was born on 25th June 1888 into an old French noble family of the same name. In her youth she led the conventional and protected existence, lack of great activity, of a girl from a "good family", an existence reminding of the life of the aristocracy(贵族) before the French Revolution. She never visited a public school, but was educated by German and English governesses and nuns. Her movements were restricted and were mainly confined to the family positions in Paris and Belgium, but she spent most of her time at the castle of Charmois not far from Verdun.

In the process of helping individual blind people across the road, Peguilly d'Herbemont was made aware by narrow scrapes(刮擦) which almost led to accidents, of the dangerous situation of the visually impaired brought about by the steadily increasing traffic on the roads. She first spoke about measures to protect the blind against street hazards to her mother in 1930, but she was of the opinion that it was unfit for a lady of good society to create a public outcry and advised her to stick to the transcription of books, a popular pastime of ladies of rank at the time.

But the idea did not leave her. The urgent wish to encourage the integration(成为一体) of the blind into society by providing them with a means of moving about more freely without endangering others, and at the same time attracting the attention of passers-by ready to offer assistance, caused her to take the unusual step of writing to the editor of the Paris daily Echo de Paris in which she suggested issuing the blind of the Paris region with white sticks similar to those used by the traffic police.

The editor took up the idea, published it in November 1930 and saw to it that the relevant authorities acted with atypical speed. Thus it was that the white cane received official backing, and on 7th February 1931.
