高三英语上学期上册试题

This is the season for giving. Looking to get in touch with your generous side? Learn these four habits of truly thoughtful gift givers.

1.  16

Considerate gift giving is as much about planning as it is about how well you know the person. Take time to think about his or her personality and interests to figure out how he or she will get the most value.

2. They don’t focus on cost.

The practice of thoughtful giving offers a wealth of benefits, but that doesn’t mean givers should focus on expensive gifts.  17  It seems that having more cash could actually reduce compassion(同情). And isn’t compassion what this time of year is all about? So don’t take it too hard if you don’t have a lot to spend.  18

3. They make gifts personal.

Gifting is an opportunity to let a person know how much you appreciate and love him, and show how well you know him.  19  Book a massage (按摩), take them to a wine tasting event, or get a couple of tickets to a concert or show. If you’re buying for a parent, taking their kids for an evening could be the best gift of all.

4. They think about the presentation.

20  See what you have around your house to customize packaging. You can use pretty towels to cover something like a bottle of wine. You can also tie on a decoration that fits the theme of your gift.

  A. They plan ahead.

  B. Instead, get creative.

  C. They enjoy giving more than receiving.

  D. In fact, thoughtful gift givers don’t concentrate on the cost of presents.

  E. Thoughtful gift givers pay attention to detail, including how their gifts are packaged.

  F. Make a list of your ideas ahead of time to make sure you find the perfect fit for everyone.

  G. If you’re buying for someone who seems to have everything, consider gifting an experience.

How to Achieve Your Full Potential

Once you have known your full potential, it’s time to work continuously towards achieving it.   36

Determine what your full potential is. At its heart, achieving your full potential is about being the best person that you can be and is about expressing yourself to the fullest. Since everyone is different person, however, full potential is a relative term and you’ll view the concept in a different way from your best friend, your teacher, and from other people in your life.   37

Is there something I have ever wanted to do, such as dancing, singing, writing, or playing aporta?

Are there any physical aspects of myself I could work on, such as losing weight or building up muscles?

Commit to achieve your goal. Once you have confirmed that your goal is achievable and realistic, got to work.   ___38   However, once you get past that first step, you’ll be onto success!

___39   You don’t go from crawling to running –you have to take your baby steps first. Once you gather the energy and mindset(思维模式)needed to take on our task, no matter how big, slow down and take a peek (看一眼)at eye level.

Accept pain. Failures will happen; they’re a natural part of life.  40   They will help you figure out what you are capable of, and what needs work as you move towards achieving your goals.

A. Take small steps

B. Determine what you’re shooting for

C. Once you get going, do challenge yourself

D. The most difficult part of beginning anything is beginning

E. Sail your own ocean, and you never know what you might find

F. Failures are a simple way of showing you what works and what doesn’t

G. As you continue to discover your own potential, consider these questions.

In the summer of 1776, Thomas Jefferson, who later became the third president of the USA, was not happy. He preferred to stay at home in Virginia rather than attend Philadelphia’s Continental Congress(大陆会议)

Thomas Jefferson knew he had a job to do. Important men throughout the American

colonies (殖民地) were meeting in Philadelphis to discuss and debate the war with Great Briain. The colony of Virginia sent Thomas Jefferson to Philadelphia. But Jefferson wasn't happy. Jefferson wanted to be home that hot summer of 1776. he missed his wife, Martha. She hadn't been feeling well when he left, and he worried about her.
On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee from Virginia stood up at the Congress and announced that "these American colonies ought to be free and independent states." Jefferson probably knew what was coming next. Here was another resolution (
决议)to debate. And whenever there was a resolution, there was a declaration.
The American colonies had been at war with Great Britain for more than a year, but surprisingly. The colonies had not formally announced their independence. So the Congress appointed a five-man committee to create a document declaring America's independence. And the committee chose Thomas Jefferson to write it.
Jefferson knew he was to list the unfair things Great Britain had done to the colonies. For days and days, Jefferson wrote and rewrote about the king and his unfair laws. About independence. About freedom. He borrowed ideas from other political writers, but he wrote these thoughts in words that all people could understand. He wanted his ideas to be shared with everyone.

And they were. The Continental Congress voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. On July 8, it was read out loud to a cheering crowd. No one knew who the author was, but they knew what the Declaration stood for-independence and freedom for all.

Still, Thomas Jefferson dreamed of home. In late July he begged Richard Henry Lee to replace him in the Congress. In September, Jefferson's dream finally came true, and he traveled home.

Since then, the words Thomas Jefferson wrote during that hot Philadelphia summer have inspired people throughout the world. Thank goodness Jefferson didn't go home.

All my life I had wanted a dog. I had two cats that I adored like children, but I still wanted the company of a dog. Then unfortunately I lost my cats. Soon came another shock that my husband left me forever because of lung cancer. I felt I had just lost everything that ever mattered to me.

I voiced these feelings to a friend, who took me to a pet store. The store was holding an adoption day with shelters. I looked at and held several puppies (小狗)wondering which to choose. Then I met Maggie. She looked at me with the saddest eyes I had ever seen, then laid her head on my shoulder and slept. I immediately decided to save her!

Maggie adjusted well. I, however, was still adjusting. One night, thoughts of losing everything rushed through my head again. So depressed was I that I felt the only solution was to end my life. With a bottle of medicine in one hand and Maggie on my lap, I took the pills. Through my tear-filled eyes I looked down at Maggie to tell her I was sorry. The look on her face I will never be able to explain. It looked as if her eyes said, “Don’t leave me; I need you just as you needed me.” It was then that I ran to the bathroom to vomit up the pills. The rest of the night I sat on the couch holding Maggie and thanking her for saving me.

Since that night I have had a love for her that I never knew possible. She never leaves my side when I am at home. She has taught me to smile and laugh. Together with Maggie, I feel I can get through anything.

BBecause she had lost everything important to her.

CBecause she couldn’t adjust to living with Maggie.

DBecause she couldn’t find any solution to her problem.

28What can be a suitable title for the text?

Most of us like to think we are fairly happy people, but deep down we might not necessarily believe it or feel happy.   31

They look on the bright side.

When things get tough, the truly happy are often unshaken.  32   If you truly want to be happy, you need to make a point of having faith that things will turn out alright. Maintain your perspective(观点) and know that, no matter what happens, you can bounce back(迅速恢复活力).

Instead of focusing on money and pursuing(追求)career advancement by working long hours, the happiest people focus more of their time on personal relationships. At the end of your life, you won’t remember a lot of the time you spent at work.  33   Putting people before money is a powerful tool in achieving happiness.

They avoid drama(戏剧性事件).

34   While other people get caught up in other people’s relationships or stress out about who said what to whom, happy people choose to focus on the things they have more control over. Paying attention to your own life and letting other people live theirs is a simple way to make best use of happiness.

They follow their passion.

Finally, happy people follow their passions. If they wake up and realize that they are unhappy with their job, they aren’t afraid to leave it to pursue something they really care about.   35  It might lead to a huge failure. But happy people aren’t afraid to stick their neck out and chase what everyone else is afraid to.

If you have ever been in a school play or even made believe you were a doctor, detective, or a space traveler, you know the enjoyment that acting brings. Almost all of us have the wish to play the part of someone or something else.    16

In the ancient world, acting was often associated with religious ceremonies and other special occasions. As far back as 2200 B.C, trained Chinese actors performed ceremonial dances in costume and makeup at harvest festivals.    17     To the dance was gradually added pantomime—the imitation of movements and gestures as well as the wearing of masks, the singing of chants, and finally the use of dialogue.

While acting was coming into its own in the ancient Chinese classical theatre, it was doing the same in the western world, in Greece. From about 500 B.C. on, acting became a highly specialized art in Greece. Greek actors, however, still wore masks, and their motions were largely fixed by custom.    18

Modern acting, on the contrary, gives the individual actor great opportunity to develop his or her personal talents for serious, comic, or musical drama. The names, faces, and styles of famous movie actors are known worldwide.  19   A special form of acting takes place in radio drama, which was highly popular before television. In radio drama the actors face an unique challenge. They are unseen by their audience. So they must rely on voice alone to make their characters real to the listeners.

20  Only forty percent of Broadway actors are employed, most of them for only part of the year. Those who become stars need not only talent, but determination. They must not be easily discouraged. Otherwise, they might give up before the opportunity for stardom presents itself.

A. The origins of acting are in the act of remembering.

B. Drama in Greece began with festivals honoring Dionysus.

C. It is believed that this was the first step in the development of acting.

D. Historical records indicate that this desire is as old as civilization itself.

E. Acting is not, as many people think, a quick, easy road to fame and riches.

F. Broadway and television provide other stages on which actors can display their talent.

G. Consequently, they had little opportunity to demonstrate their individual personalities.

One cool morning I was asked to go to several garage sales together with my mother. We finally   41    at a pleasant house in the woods. The elderly    42   told me that he and his wife were retired teachers. As we were searching, I heard the gentleman’s wife say her    43   to someone, and I immediately    44    who she was. She looked at me and said, “You’re Susan Miller.” I looked at her   45  , for it had been nearly thirty years   46   I had been in her class.

My mother immediately said sorry to her for any bad    47    that I might have done. She apologized again after learning that I wasn’t the sweet little child. Mum thought that if this woman    48   me after so many years, I must have done something   49  . My teacher looked at my mother and    50   said, “Oh, no, she was very good.”

My teacher    51   that during the last week of school, I brought  her a plant from my mother’s garden. It was a lamb’s ear. She took us to her garden    52   she planted the lamb’s ear. Over the years, it spread. As I looked down her driveway with lamb’s ear    53   on both sides, she said, “Every day when I leave my house and drive up the driveway, I think of you. And when I come home, they    54   me and I think of you.” Tears   55   my eyes. There at her home was a piece of my life that she had raised.

At that moment, she taught me far more about  56    than I could imagine. We give away pieces of ourselves every day    57    thought. We seldom imagine the effects that we have on others’ lives. That piece may grow and spread, becoming a    58   part of a life. In the end it is not the big things that matter,     59   the small things that make all the    60   in the world.

There is a lake near a forest in Sweden. The water in the lake is very clear and everything is quiet and still. On the far side of the water is some farmland and further away, across the field, is an old church built on a hill. It has just stopped raining. The brook flowing into the lake is full and there is still some half melted snow from last winter on the ground.

The reason the water is so clear, and everything is so quiet and still, is that most of the plant and animal life in and around the lake is dead. There are no birds because all the fish and insects, which the birds need for food, have disappeared. Many trees in the forest are losing their leaves and bark, and are sick and dying. Others were blown down by the high winds of last winter. A farmer is working in a field planting something, but unless he plants a stronger kind of seed this year, the crop will be between 25 to 40 per cent lower than a few years ago. The stones of the old church tower are turning to powder and unless the tower is repaired soon, it will fall down.

All the death and destruction in this place is caused by the smoke coming out of factories and poisonous gases from cars and trucks. And yet this silent lake is hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest factory and highway.

1. Why are there no animals or birds in or around the lake?

A. The weather is terribly cold.

B. The lake is quiet.

C. The area is polluted.

D. They have all been killed.

2. The farmer has to plant a stronger kind of seed because ____________.

A. the soil becomes less and less.

B. few plants can grow because of the pollution.

C. the water in the lake can’t be used to irrigate the field.

D. the wind is strong.

3. What do you think is the best title of the passage?

A. A Beautiful Place of Interest.

B. A Polluted Place.

C. A Quiet Place in Sweden.

D. A Faraway Mountain Area.

A survey basing on 1,000 students found that half of the pupils and 80% of the middle school students sleeps less than nine hours every night. Too many homework given by school teachers and parents is the main reasons. Other reason lies in students’ bad habits. Some students, for example, are absent-minded while doing his homework, and some waste their after-class time. The third reason is because some students have to get up early on weekdays to get school far away from home. Experts are calling at schools and parents to cut down on the amount of homework. And students should make a good use of their time. And it would be better if they could choose to study in a nearby school.

When my friends went to college in great delight, I restarted my senior high school lifeMy spirit sankSurrounded by strange classmates, I felt like I was in a maze and was sorry about myselfThere were some complex feelings in my mindsI was frightened, nervous and lonely

To make matters worse, I recalled my failure again and again, which put more pressure on me than I could bearAs a result, I was always feeling down during class time

My teacher found me spiritlessOne day he asked me to come to his office and told me about his attitude towards life: we might suffer from mistakes, but it’s important to learn lessons from themAll the pains and the embarrassing things we experience are part of the processSo keep up your spirit! At last, he added, “If you are optimistic, things you want may happen to you!”

Warmth rushed through my soulI suddenly found the sun shining again when I stepped out of his office

With the teacher’s help, I eventually got over my depressionFrom then on, I no longer bowed my head and began smiling to my classmatesI would put up my hand confidently in class and play with my new friends in my spare timeMeanwhile, I was gradually embraced by my classmates

Now faced with fierce competition, we all study hard because we know that every second countsMoreover, there is an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect between usI love my class; I love my classmates!

To be frank, I still have a thirst for my dream university, but I’m not afraid of failure because I can profit by itWith parents and teachers’ encouragement, I’m quite certain of my success and I’m sure I can fly high
