Franz Kafka wrote that “a book must be the ax(斧子) for the frozen sea inside us. ” I once shared this sentence with a class of seventh graders, and it didn’t seem to require any explanation.
We
’d just finished John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. When we read the end together out loud in class, my toughest boy, a star basketball player, wept a little, and so did I. “Are you crying?” one girl asked, as she got out of her chair to take a closer look. “I am,” I told her, “and the funny thing is I’ve read it many times.”
But they understood. When George shoots Lennie, the tragedy is that we realize it was always going to happen. In my 14 years of teaching in a New York City public middle school, I’ve taught kids with imprisoned parents, abusive parents, irresponsible parents; kids who are parents themselves; kids who are homeless; kids who grew up in violent neighborhoods. They understand, more than I ever will, the novel’s terrible logic—the giving way of dreams to fate.
For the last seven years, I have worked as a reading enrichment teacher, reading classic works of literature with small groups of students from grades six to eight. I originally proposed this idea to my headmaster after learning that a former excellent student of mine had transferred out of a selective high school-- one that often attracts the literary-minded children of Manhattan’s upper classes -- into a less competitive setting. The daughter of immigrants, with a father in prison, she perhaps felt uncomfortable with her new classmates. I thought additional “cultural capital” could help students like her develop better in high school, where they would unavoidably meet, perhaps for the first time, students who came from homes lined with bookshelves, whose parents had earned Ph. D.’s.
Along with Of Mice and Men, my groups read: Sounder, The Red Pony, Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The students didn’t always read from the expected point of view.
About The Red Pony, one student said, “it’s about being a man, it’s about manliness.” I had never before seen the parallels between Scarface and Macbeth, nor had I heard Lady Macbeth’s soliloquies(独白) read as raps, but both made sense; the interpretations were playful, but serious. Once introduced to Steinbeck’s writing, one boy went on to read The Grapes of Wrath and told me repeatedly how amazing it was that “all these people hate each other, and they’re all white.” His historical view was broadening, his sense of his own country deepening. Year after year, former students visited and told me how prepared they had felt in their first year in college as a result of the classes.
Year after year, however, we are increasing the number of practice tests. We are trying to teach students to read increasingly complex texts, not for emotional punch(碰撞) but for text complexity. Yet, we cannot enrich the minds of our students by testing them on texts that ignore their hearts. We are teaching them that words do not amaze but confuse. We may succeed in raising test scores, but we will fail to teach them that reading can be transformative and that it belongs to them.
43. Why were the students able to understand the novel Of Mice and Men?
A. Because they spent much time reading it.

A. creatively B. passively C. repeatedly D. carelessly
46. The author writes the passage mainly to ______.
A. introduce classic works of literature
B. advocate teaching literature to touch the heart
C. argue for equality among high school students

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and only a very expensive operation could save him now. They were a poor family and no one would lend them the money.
When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, “Only a miracle can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully. Then, she hurried to a drugstore with the money in her hand.
“And what do you want?” asked the salesman. “It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” “Pardon?” said the salesman. “My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry,” the salesman said with a smile. “Listen, if it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”
A well-dressed man heard it and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need? ”“I don’t know,” she answered with her eyes full of tears. “He’s really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can’t pay for it, so I have brought all my money.” “How much do you have?” asked the man. “$1.11, but I can try and get some more,” she answered. “Well, what luck,” smiled the man. “$1. 11, the price of a miracle for your little brother.”
He took up the girl’s hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

24. From the passage we can infer that _______.
A. the doctor didn’t ask for any pay B. the little girl was very clever
C. the salesman was cold-hearted D. Andrew became a famous doctor
A man enters a store to buy milk. He walks out of the store with milk. That is all—milk. At the same time, a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. She buys it. But, she also buys chicken and lemons to make dinner that night. She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends and a birthday card for her husband’s niece. And that is the difference between the female and male brains simply explained in a grocery store. Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. Women do many. Doing many things at one time is often called “multi-tasking,” a very popular word these days.
Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. A recent study has confirmed what we have known all along—men and women think differently.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied brain images of 949 people aged from 8 to 22 years old. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or hemisphere. In the female brain, they found more activity and connections between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain is known as the side of “reason”. The right hemisphere is known as the “creative” side.
Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She co-wrote the report. She says when women are asked to do something complicated they might use different parts of the brain. But men generally use just one.
As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. There is a strong connection between the “understanding” and the “action” parts of their brains. Women, however, might include other parts of the brain, like the part connected with “reason” and the part connected with sensitivity when solving a problem. Women take a less direct path to find a solution.
Thanks for your listening. I’m your announcer Anna Matteo.

Aggressive pedestrians are in fact as dangerous as careless drivers. They cause traffic accidents, injury and death. These dangerous walkers can be seen in any big city all over the world. About 69% of last year’s pedestrian deaths in the US occurred in urban areas. They cross streets ignoring “DON’T WALK” signals, suddenly appear without warning from behind parked vehicles, or walk slowly at crossroads with cell phones attached to heads, blocking traffic.
These pedestrians and drivers share a common disregard for the rules of the road, both for selfish reasons. The drivers believe in the power of their machines. If their machines can go faster, they believe they have the right to go faster. If their machines are bigger, they believe they have the right to push smaller vehicles aside. Aggressive pedestrians, on the other hand, believe in the primacy of the individual, the idea that they are first in any environment, under any circumstances, even when they are on foot in a roaring tide of steel and rubber.
Last year, an estimated 5,220 pedestrians died in traffic accidents. Some 69,000 pedestrians were injured. On average, that worked out to one pedestrian killed in a traffic crash every 101 minutes, and one injured every eight minutes.
The good news is that the accident rate is dropping. For example, the number of pedestrians killed last year was 24 percent less than the number killed in traffic accidents a decade earlier. The bad news is that the basic causes of pedestrian deaths remain pretty much the same----disregard for traffic signals, inattention and crossing roads under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Alcohol, in fact, was involved in 46 percent of the traffic accidents that resulted in pedestrian deaths. Of those, 31 percent of the pedestrians were found to be drunk.
The bottom line is that the pedestrians must do more to protect their lives as well as the lives of other road users. They can start by obeying traffic signals, using marked cross-walks and calling a cab when they’ve had too much to drink.
56.The passage is mainly about __________.
A.how aggressive pedestrians cause traffic accidents
B.why so many Americans were killed on roads last year
C.what the traffic rules of the road about pedestrians were
D.who are to blame for pedestrian deaths, drunk drivers or the aggressive pedestrians
57.What is the pedestrians’ selfish reason for traffic jams?
A.They know all drivers are skilled and with great care.
B.They believe individuals are always first.
C.They think traffic rules have nothing to do with them.
D.They guess all vehicles will slow down at crossroads.
58.What was NOT the basic cause of pedestrian deaths in the US a decade ago?
A.Disregard for traffic signals B.Paying no attention to surroundings.
C.Crossing roads drunk. D.Overspeeding driving.
59.What word can best describe the author’s attitude to the traffic accidents caused by pedestrians?
A.Excited. B.Cold. C.Concerned D.Indifferent.
The Alps are the youngest and highest mountain system in Europe. They stretch across the western and southern part of the continent in a broad arc. The mountain range starts near the Mediterranean Sea on the border between France and Italy. Then it curves north and eastward through northern Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, southern Germany, Austria and Slovenia.
The Alps are about 1,000 km long, and the broadest section is over 260 km wide. The highest peak, Mont Blanc, situated on the border between France, Italy and Switzerland, rises 4,807 meters above sea level. Other famous peaks are the Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, the GroBglockner and the Zugspitze.
Millions of years ago the area of today’s Alps was covered by a large sea that separated Europe and Africa. The southern land mass started moving northwards. This movement folded rock layers at the bottom of the sea. Heat and pressure transformed the rock and pushed the material upwards. Today these regions are the highest parts of the Alps. Most of the newly formed rock is granite and gneiss, but many ranges consist of limestone which also formed on the seabed.
During the Ice Age, which started about a million years ago, the Alps were covered with a thick blanket of snow. Glaciers moved down valleys and made them wider and deeper. As they moved they took rock and other material with them, creating moraines(冰碛).When glaciers started to melt water filled up behind these natural dams and created the alpine lakes we know today.
The largest of these glaciers is the Aletsch in Switzerland which reaches a length of about 25 km. The longest glacier of the eastern Alps is the 8 km long Pasterze, at the foot of the GroBglockner.
The ice and snow of the alpine regions helped create the large rivers of today: the Rhine, Rhone, Danube and the Po.

The world is filled with smart, talented and gifted people. We meet them every day.A few days ago, my car was not running well. I pulled it i
nto a garage, and the young mechanic had it fixed within just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine. I was amazed. The sad truth is that only great talent is not enough.
I am often shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year. A business consultant (顾问) who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle with money. It was this business consultant that gave me the phase, “They are one skill away from great wealth”.
There is an old saying that goes,“Job means ‘just over broke(破产)’”.And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial(财务的)intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means”. They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask, “So if most of
you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
32.How did the mechanic find the problem in the car?
A. by listening to the engine B. by listening to what the author said
C. by pulling it to the garage D. by driving it
33.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?
A. They have no talents. B. They have no good skills.
C. They don’t work enough. D. They don’t have financial intelligence.
34.The success of McDonald's lies in its .
A. skills at making hamburgers B. excellent service
C. talented workers D. good business systems
35.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The world lacks smart, talented and gifted people.
B. The world lacks skilled workers.
C. The world lacks people like McDonald’s.
D. The world lacks excellent doctors and dentists.

The United States Capitol Dome(圆顶) in Washington, DC, is recognized around the world as a symbol of the U.S. Government. Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles and heavy cloth as part of a repair project.
The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports that the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage.
The dome was completed around 1863. U. S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast(石膏) iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off extra layers of paint.”
Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was impressive, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly, it is kind of a disappointment.”
Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries...and you know ,there just needs to be preventive maintenance(维护). I am not upset with that at all.”
The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for a new president in January 2017.

Dear Thomas,
I feel sorry to know your worries about getting fatter and fatter so that you have failed
the sports test. Nothing can be more disappointment than that.
As far as I am concerned, there are many reasons cause your failure in a test. Firstly, you are very lazy to have regular sports. In fact, sports can help you keep fit and energy. Secondly, you eat too much meat, that makes you gain weight easily. Finally, you sleep more than you need. There was no denying that it is all these things that have caused your problem and your worries.
As I stated above, you should first eat less meat but more fruits and vegetable. And then you should have regular sports so that you can burn the fat that builds up in your body and to become slim.
Hope my advice is some help to you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
