Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it’s because we have mirror neurons (神经元) in our brains.
Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This
explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.
Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the area
which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: “The hand took hold of the ball”), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).
Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which
are not fully functioning. However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.
Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information concerning how humans behave and interact. Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent for neuroscience of what Einstein’s theory of relativity was for physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the cinema when someone else does—well, perhaps you’ll understand why.
24. Mirror neurons can explain _____.
A. why we cry when we are hurt

No personal success, achievement, or goal, can be realized without self-discipline. __36 . It is the ability to control one’s impulses, emotions, desires and behavior. To possess it is to be able to make the decisions, take the actions, and carry out your plan regardless of the obstacles, discomfort, or difficulties, that may come your way.
How to develop self-discipline? We’ll explore it together.
· Start with baby steps. No process takes place overnight. 37 .So, begin by making the decision to go forward and learning what it takes to get there.
· Learn what motivates you and what your bad triggers are. 38 . Sometimes it is very difficult to fight off urges, so know the areas where your resistance is low and how to avoid those situations. Remove the temptations and surround yourself with encouraging items such as motivating slogans and pictures of what you want to achieve.
· Make certain behaviors a routine. Once you have decided what’s important to you and which goals to strive for , establish a daily routine that will help you achieve them. __39 . They can put you in a negative frame of mind and hinder(阻碍)your self-discipline. A poor attitude can also be a bad habit.
40 Michael Jordan has always maintained that his greatness as a basketball player came as much from his willingness to work hard at his craft, as it did his talent. It was his desire through discipline and focus that made him one of the best basketball players ever. If it worked for him, it could certainly work for the rest of us.
A. What is self-discipline?
B. Engage in sports or activities.
C. Get inspiration from those you admire.
D. You can begin by learning about yourself !
E. If you try to do too much at once , you could injure yourself and have a setback.

G. It does mean learning how to focus your mind and energies on your goals until they are accomplished.
It was a bad time for me. I was low emotionally and tired physically. Probably because of this I hadn't shaved for a few days. Also, because I had been doing some repairs at my daughter's house, I was dressed quite scruffily. Boarding the bus to go home, I saw it was almost full so I found a rail(扶手) to lean against.
That's when a young woman, sitting with her child, stood up and offered me her seat."Wow!" I thought. Out loud I said, "Do I look that old and tired7" She replied," You look like you've had a tough day." I thanked her sincerely and stayed standing.
A moment later a man rose from his seat at the back of the bus and made his way towards me, squeezing past several people on the way. Then he told me about his addiction problems, asked my advice, and just chatted about life for a few minutes. Then he went back to his seat. Very random!
Watching him go, I also looked at the bus-load of people between me and his seat. He hadn't chosen to talk to those strangers. He chose to talk to this stranger, for whatever it meant to him and whatever comfort it brought him. Why?
That's when it occurred to me. I must have Looked Like I had been where he was. I probably looked like a man who would understand a difficult life. I was humbled and uplifted at the same time by the realization that even when we are at our lowest, we can still help others-if we look like we might be able to meet them where they live or walk a while in their world.

A. He lacks confident in life. B. He maybe takes drugs heavily.
C. He felt familiar with the writer. D. He was an acquaintance of the writer.
28. The underlined words "this stranger" in Paragraph 4 probably refer to "_______ ".
A. the writer B. the driver C. one passenger D. the young woman
The United States of America was founded in 1776 after the 13 independent American states rose up against the ruling British, defeated them in the American Revolutionary War, and signed the Declaration of Independence, the document which declared the creation of the new country.
The men who led the revolution, drafted the Declaration of Independence, and wrote the first American laws are known as " founding fathers". Benjamin Franklin, whose picture is on the US 100-dollar note, was appointed to prepare the Declaration that was eventually signed by the other founding fathers.
Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston to a soap maker named Josiah Franklin. His father could not afford full schooling for all his children, but Benjamin loved books and worked in his elder brother's printing business before starting a newspaper called the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1729. He wrote and drew cartoons for the newspaper. In addition, he worked to improve living conditions in the city: introducing street lights, cleaning the roads and building libraries. In the 1740s, Franklin retired from his newspaper and turned to science with great success. He was a very smart man and his work on electricity, including the “kite experiment” which confirmed the nature of lightning, made him famous throughout the world.
Franklin earned the title of the “First American” for his efforts to unite the 13 American states, and to win their independence. This part of the story starts in London. He was sent to the city to persuade the British to treat the American states more fairly. It was here that he began interacting with important political thinkers and activists of the time and developing his own political ideas.
Following his return to America in 1761 he became much more active in American politics and in the battle against British rule.
After the United States of America was established, Franklin held several important positions such as the first United States Postmaster General, Ambassador to France and President of Pennsylvania. He is also famous today for his wise sayings, including “a penny saved is a penny earned” and “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

A TV program was being videoed. Tonight it was to select the sweetest whisper of love ever said between husband and wife.
The final competition was held among 10 married couples. Seven of them were young ones; two middle-aged and one old. The last turn came to the old couple. The old lady took the microphone and said the sweetest whisper of love she has ever heard was: “Are you standing or sitting?”The host fixed his eyes on her, quite puzzled by her remarks.
Regardless of all the talking around, she went on with her story. Her husband has been a doctor before he retired. One day when he was on duty at the hospital, he felt a sharp pain at the heart. By his professional knowledge he knew immediately he suffered a fit of heart attack. His colleagues carried him at once to the operation room and prepared him for a by-pass operation, which was highly risky. The patient’s family members had to be informed before it began. The patient himself was allowed to put in a word. Lying silently on the operation table with a trembling hand, he dialed after a moment’s thinking the number of his wife’s phone. Finally a familiar voice came from the other end…
“So many years had passed but memory of this incident remained fresh in my mind. What he said in the beginning was: ‘Are you standing or sitting?’ He was actually worried about me, wondering how I felt at the news. He was afraid I would have fallen flat onto the ground. In such a critical(危急的)state as he was then, his thought still went to me…” The old lady concluded slowly, “That’s the sweetest whisper of love I’ve ever heard all my life.”

ID systems are used as a means for people to prove their identity, as a means of access control, or for many other situations. ID cards also contain a lot more information than simply the name of the holder. All ID cards contain information that is relevant to the institution that released them, so there is no single model that applies to all ID cards.
Different institutions have different rules when it comes to ID cards, and ID cards used by students, in universities, will not have the same security features as those used in the military, for example. The more important the institution is, the more important the security is, and the more security features will be used to prevent duplication(复制) of an ID card.
Anyone with a printer that can print ID cards can duplicate in ID card, if it does not have any security measures. There have been lots of cases, especially in low security institutions, where ID cards have been duplicated and this was not noticed, since the person holding the card usually flashed it when it was requested, and that was not enough to notice that it is a fake.
That may not be extremely important when it is simply a case of a student trying to enter the campus of another university, but it can be of vital importance if it happens in a military institution. Checks in military institutions are much stricter and the personnel checking the card are always trained to spot fakes in a short amount of time.
Some may think that creating an ID card is extremely difficult, but it is not. All it takes is a special printer that can print ID cards, a model and a photo ID. The fact that such printers can be freely ordered online has raised security issues with lots of companies and institutions, and most have decided to either create their own ID cards, or simply use more advanced security features that regular home-users do not have access to. This includes magnetic stripes(磁条), chips, barcodes(条形码),and other methods. This does increase the cost of the card per person, so the total cost of the cards increases based on the number of employees the company has, but it also reduces security risks to a minimum.
So ID systems, as basic as they seem, are an excellent security measure for any institution. To ensure that the IDs look good and function properly, the company that handles the card printing services should be top-class. Trying to save some money by choosing a cheaper provider is not really wise. While some companies offer bonuses for large orders, if the quality provided is not of the highest standard, it is not worth it.

When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,”Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault;the car broke down.”It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stone for success.
12. According to the passage, winners .
A. blame themselves rather that others
B. meet with fewer difficulties in their lives
C. have responsible and able colleagues
D. deal with problems rather than blame others
13. The underlined word remedy in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .
A. improve B. accept C. avoid D. consider
14. When your colleague brings about a problem, you should .
A. blame him for his lack of responsibility
B. find a better way to handle the problem
C. tell him to find the cause of the problem
D. ask a more able colleague for help
15. When problems occur, winners take them as
A. excuses for their failures B. barriers to greater power
C. chances for self-development D. challenges to their colleagues
Do you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? Can you? If so, you could be the next great inventor. "But I'm just a kid", you might be! Don't worry about a little thing like age. For example, one famous inventor--Benjamin Franklin--got his start when he was only 12. At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Finally his creation led to what we know is called flippers!
So you don't have to be adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of: curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways.
So what should you do if you have what is a great idea for an invention? Talk to a friend or family member about it. Get input from others about your idea. Then ask them to help you create a working model--called a prototype(原型) of your idea.
Once you have a prototype, you can test it. Sometimes your idea turns out to be not as great as you thought. At other times, though, you realize it is a good idea and your prototype can help you figure out how to make it even better.
If your idea is really a good one, an adult can help you contact companies that might be interested in it. You will also want an adult's help to get a patent for your idea, so that it is protected and can't be stolen by someone else. If you need some inspiration, consider these kids and their inventions:
Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It's a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves.
At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read.
Chelsea Lanmon received a patent when she was just 8 for the "pocket diaper(尿布)", a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder.
21. By saying "But I'm just a kid", you probably mean you ___________.
A. are too young to achieve anything B. can do anything though you are young
C. are old enough to become an inventor D. have to learn knowledge from other people
22. Kids are most likely to be inventors probably because they _________.
A. would like to make friends with others B. usually work hard at their lessons at school
C. like playing all kinds of toys at home D. think about things in quite different ways
23. Who invented something that helps the blind to read?
A. Jeannie Low B. Benjamin Franklin C. Chelsea Lanmon D. Louis Braille
24. Which of the following can be the main idea of this passage?
A. Kids have curiosity and imagination B. There are some world famous inventors.
C. Kids are exactly like adults in a way D. It is possible for kids to be inventors.
The results of the research, by the name of Longevity Project were released recently, throwing new light on what we can do to live longer. Based on the new information and modern statistics to study participants gathered across eight years, Dr. Howard Friedman exposes the secret to achieving good health and a long life. It was found that worry-free characters, far from being longevity-friendly as traditional wisdom assumed, died younger than the types interpreted as calm and easy-going. There is a connection between happiness and longevity, but the elements of happiness are not unlimited leisure, positivity and absence of stress. In fact, the opposite maybe more contributive. Longevity is far more than genetics, diet, or exercise. It is closely connected with emotions. Staying married happily is the magic key to a long life, especially if you are a woman.
Another factor is our attitude towards health. We assume that modern medical advantages can deliver us from the consequence of our unhealthy act and see no reason to change our careless gestures towards ageing as the years fly by until something, sometimes the terrible disease, wakes us up. But a positive by-product of age blindness is the appetite for work, which remains strong and may even sharpen as we seek ways to keep death in a distance. And the state of being at work --working the hardest-- would appear to enhance the prospect for a longest life.
As for whether economic condition determine how we live and for how long, whose effect on life expectancy is not so evident on current technical level, the study detects some differences in health conditions that at first glance may be caused by the gap that does exercise its influence, but mainly on a person’s self judgment.
On the current stage, one thing can be sure. Various factors work in determining how long we live. Only some of these can be somewhat influenced at a personal level which makes it even more important to know what those facts are, what measure can be taken to extend life expectancy within our power.
