Chinese scientist Tu Youyou on October 5 won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine amongst a trio for discovering parasite therapies(寄生虫疗法). 85-year-old Tu is awarded this world-renowned prize for her contribution to reducing the death rate of malaria, minimizing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s health. This is what science is all about.

Tu’s finding has saved millions’ lives during the 40 years. This also proves the value of her research product. The reward is never too late in that aspect. The moment of joy and satisfaction came when she discovered the artemisinin( 青蒿素) after all kinds of failures in experiments.

As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s winning completely surprised Chinese people, who have long been wondering when the first Chinese Nobel laureate in natural science would appear.

Let’s backtrack to 40 years ago. Tu accomplished the breakthrough findings without access to any advanced equipment, communication with outside world and papers to research. However, over the 40 years, improvements and innovations have transformed everything. Nowadays, Chinese scientists have the passion to invent. As Premiere Li Keqiang mentioned in his letter, “Tu’s winning the prize signifies China’s prosperity and progress in scientific and technological field”.

Tu’s record-breaking winning serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. There is no way to measure how much you spend on scientific research and compare it with how much reward you get.

Is beauty something always positive? Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive主管的 circle, beauty can become a disadvantage.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the manly qualities required.

This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, ” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates候选人. She asked 125 college students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

Staying silent can be just as powerful as the words you mean to say, like when the act of hugging will be more comforting than saying, “Sorry for your loss.”

Another time when silence is golden is when you are unsure of what to say. If you are confused about your own feelings concerning a matter, it’s best to stay quiet until you are more certain because more harm can be done by revealing false or exaggerated feelings

Choose silence instead of blurting out “in-the-moment” feelings that are hurtful and not really how you feel in the grand scheme of things. When you feel the urge to say an unkind thing, take a few breaths and think of the possible consequences of your words.

Silence can be your best friend during negotiations. Say your piece, then close your mouth, and let the other person come to their own conclusions. Your silence shows that one, you are confident in what you just said, and two, you respect the other person enough to hear what they have to say.

Sometimes silence is the best and most timely solution because the other person is not in a position to hear what you have to say. For example, when a friend needs for you to listen to her problems, but she is unable to accept your advice at that moment.

Practice being silent at work when you don’t have anything meaningful to contribute. Unless you can start the conversation by pointing out something interesting, missing, or beneficial, it’s best to just observe and learn.

Finally, silence is golden when you don’t want to engage in a fool’s argument. As some squabbles(口角) will never be resolved, one must agree to disagree.

However, there will be times in your life where you will need the power of your voice, the voice within you that wants and needs to be respected and appreciated.

   B. Close your mouth and just listen to the other

   C. Speak out your own points and discuss with others

   D. Keep silent after expressing yourself

31. To follow this passage, the writer is likely to continue telling about___

   A. the occasions when you should speak up

B. the power of your voice

A strong memory depends on the health and vitality(活力) of your brain. They say that you can’t teach an old new tricks, but when it comes to the brain, scientists have discovered that this old saying simply isn’t true. 36

Give your brain a workout. Memory, like muscular strength, requires you to “use it or lose it”. The more you work out your brain, the better you’ll be able to process and remember information. 37

Don’t skip the physical exercise. While mental exercise is important for brain health, that doesn’t mean you never need to break a sweat. Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp. It increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss.

Get enough sleep. There is a big difference between the amount of sleep you can get by on and the amount you need to function at your best. 38

Keep stress in check. Stress is one of the brain’s worst enemies. Over time, stress destroys brain cells. Studies have also linked stress to memory loss.

Have a laugh. 39 That holds true for the brain and the memory, as well as the body. Unlike emotional responses, which are limited to specific areas of the brain, laughter engages multiple regions across the whole brain.

__40__ Just as the body needs fuel, so does the brain. You probably already know that a diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, “healthy” fats and lean protein will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can also improve memory. For brain health, though, it’s not just what you eat—it’s also what you don’t eat.

A. Eat a brain-boosting diet.

B. Play games with memory.

C. Laughter is the best medicine.

D. But oversleeping is not good for your brain.

E. Even skipping a few hours makes a difference!

F. You have to shake things up from time to time!

G. The human brain has an astonishing ability to adapt and change.

Almost every day we come across situations in which we have to make decisions one way or another. Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, a false idea created by companies and advertisers hoping to sell their products.

The endless choice gives birth to anxiety in people’s lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away, or just buying an unsuitable item (商品) that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-making is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors.

It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the market. Advances in design and production help quicken the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical example is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no anxiety.

1. What does the author try to argue in Paragraph 1?

A. The practice of choice is difficult.

B. The right of choice is given but at a price.

C. Choice and right exist at the same time.

D. The exercise of rights is a luxury.

2. Why do more choices of goods give rise to anxiety?

A. People are likely to find themselves overcome by business persuasion.

B. Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items.

C. Companies and advertisers are often misleading about the rage of choice.

D. Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product.

3. By using computers as an example, the author wants to prove that ______.

A. products of the latest design flood the market

B. competitions are fierce in high-tech industry

C. everyday goods need to be replaced often

D. advanced products meet the needs of people

4. What is this passage mainly about?

A. The opinions on people’s right in different countries.

      B. The problems about the availability of everyday goods.

C. The helplessness in purchasing decisions.

D. The variety of choices in modern society.

A young man didn’t know what he was going to do with his life. One day, he was sitting in a park ____61____ (watch) squirrels run and jump in the trees. Suddenly, a squirrel jumped from one high tree to ____62____. It seemed to aim for a branch so far out of reach ____63___ the jump looked impossible. And sure enough, the squirrel missed. But it still landed safely on ____64____ branch several feet lower. Then it just climbed up a little ____65____(high) and reached the branch it really wanted.

An old man sitting near the young man said, “It’s funny.I____66____(see) a lot of squirrels jump like that. A lot of them miss, ____67____ I’ve never seen one of them get hurt. I guess they’ve just got to risk it ____68____ they don’t want to spend their whole life in one tree.” Then the young man thought, “If a little squirrel is ____69____(prepare) to take a chance, do I have less courage than a squirrel?”

At that moment he decided to take a risk, ____70____ he’d been thinking about. And sure enough, he landed safely in a position higher than he ever thought possible.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. You’ll still end up higher and better than where you are now.

No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling(生动的) “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening of life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

12. To have a better understanding of a poem, one should _____.

   A. discuss it with others                B. analyze it by oneself

   C. practice reading it aloud                 D. copy it down in a notebook

13. According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students _____.

   A. to enjoy poetry                       B. to understand life

   C. to become teacher                D. to become poets

14. The underlined word "make room "( in the last paragraph) probably means ____.

   A. to build a booth                      B. to provide equipment

   C. to set aside enough space                 D. to leave a certain amount of time

15. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply? _____.

   A. Poetry is more important than any other subject.

   B. More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.

   C. One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry.

   D. Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses.
