One cowardly man came to a master of martial arts and asked the master to teach him bravery. The master looked at him and said, “I will teach you only with one condition: one month you will have to live in a big city and tell every person you meet that you are a coward. You will have to say it loudly, openly and looking straight into the person’s eyes.”

The man got really sad, because this task seemed very scary to him. For a couple of days he hesitated, but to live with his cowardice was so unbearable that he travelled to the city to accomplish his mission.

At first, when meeting the passers-by, he quailed, lost his speech and couldn’t contact anyone. But he needed to finish the master’s task, so he began to overcome himself. When he came up to his first passer-by to tell about his cowardice, it seemed to him that he would die from fear. But his voice sounded louder and more confident with every passing day. Suddenly came a moment, when the man caught himself thinking that he was not scared anymore, and the further he continued doing the master’s task, the more convinced he was that the fear was abandoning him.

That way a month had passed. The man came back to the master, bowed to him and said, “Thank you, sir. I finished your task. Now I’m not afraid anymore. But how did you know that this strange task will help me?”

“The thing is that cowardice is only a habit. And by doing the things that scare us, we can destroy the fear. And now you know that bravery is also a habit. And if you want to make bravery a part of yourself, you need to move forward into the fear. Then the fear will go away, and bravery will take its place.”

A group of people from Denmark have formed the B-Society. According to them, human beings are divided into types: A-People, and B-People. A-People have no problem getting up in the morning, and operate much better earlier in the day. However, B-people are better later in the day. “I’m useless early in the morning,” says one of the members of the B-Society.”All I can do is drink coffee, and stare into space. People used to get up early because they had to feed the animals. But I haven’t got any cows or chickens, so I can sleep late,” She adds. Since the society was set up, the B-Society has welcomed several thousand members.

Right now, the B-Society is fighting hard for businesses to join its B-certification (证明) list. Companies that are “B-certified” basically give their employees the opportunity to come in when they want. In some companies, employees arrive at any time up to 3:30 pm --- each to their own rhythm (节奏).

And it is not just businesses that are benefiting from this. Teenagers who can’t get out of bed in the morning, and parents who never quite get the kids to school on time, can now benefit from B-classes. From next year, a school in Copenhagen will offer classes which start later in the day (at 10 instead of eight). And even the government seems to like the idea.

The B-Society was founded by Camilla Kring, a professor from the University of Copenhagen. On her website, she says, “When B-people’s work rhythms are considered at the work place, their productivity (生产力) and quality of life is increased, which can increase productivity for the entire organization.”

She adds that, “B-Society will create a new daily rhythm in schools and other institutions (机构) as an alternative to the current rhythm of ‘early at work and early at home’. We are working for the establishment of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools as well as universities that open between 10 am and 8 pm.”

Would you like to work for a B-certified company?

   A. are more hard-working than A-people

The London Underground is one of the best transport networks in the world with around 24 million journeys made each day, so it is important that everything runs smoothly. Remember the following to travel like a Londoner.

Keep right on escalator(自动梯)

London Underground asks that you stand on the right when using the escalators and leave the left free for others to walk down. If you are traveling in a big group, or with lots of shopping bags, stand and stay right and let others pass you---it will speed up the process and be a more pleasant journey for everyone!

Remember the “rush hour”

The tube network is very busy during the rush hour. You can expect the trains and stations to be overcrowded between 7:30 and 9:30 in the morning and between 17:00 and 19:00 in the evening.

Move down the platform to find more space

As you enter the station platform, you will often find more room if you walk down to the end of the platform. Here, the train carriages are usually the emptiest as well.

Carry a bottle of water in warmer moths

The London Underground is over 150 years old and although the trains have been modernized, many still lack air conditioning and cooling units. Make sure you take a bottle of water with you, especially in the summer, as the long tube journeys can get very hot.

Keep your personal belongings safe

Like any large city be cautions of pickpockets operating in the busy stations and tubes. Carry a bag with zips and keep your personal belongings and valuable items in it to avoid becoming the victims of theft.

Plan your journey on the London Underground in advance with a free tube map. Click here to download.

“Joe? Is that you?” The woman speaking to me at the baseball game looked a little familiar. “Marci?” I asked.

“It IS you!” she cried out, smiling broadly. “Gosh, it’s good to see you again!”

It was good to see Marci, too. Off and on during the past few decades, I’ve wondered about her. I almost tried to search for her a few years ago after talking to a friend who had indicated that the 1990s had been pretty rough for Marci. So meeting her at the baseball game was really out of expectation.

We spent a few minutes talking about our lives the good old, bad old days. Then Marci grew quiet for a moment. “You know, Joe,” she said, “I’ve always wanted to tell you ... how ... how sorry for the way I treated you. You must have been hurt both physically and mentally.” I was a little embarrassed. I tuned and looked at her. “It’s OK,” I said, “No big deal!” “But I was such a jerk,” she continued. Yes, you were, I thought. “We were both pretty young,” I smiled. “I know, she said, “It’s just always bothered me, remembering how mean I was to you. And I’ve wanted to tell you that I’m sorry.”

The expression on her face was warm and sincere. And there was something in her eyes it looked a lot like relief. “OK,” I said, “Apology accepted!” Overcome by the sweetness of the moment, I reached an arm around her and gave her a quick hug. Just then, the crowd erupted with a huge cheer, and Marci and I both returned our attention to the game. By the time I looked over to where she had been, she was gone. But the warm, wonderful feeling of our brief exchange was still there, and continues to the day whenever I think about it.

It isn’t enough to just say “I’m sorry” and “you’re forgotten”. But when those words are truly felt and sincerely expressed, they can open the door to the miracles of the heart. Forgiveness can give peace to an injured soul even years after the fact, even at a baseball game.

21. What kind of life did Marci live during the late 20th century according to the passage?

   A. Happy.            B. Busy.           C. Hard.        D. Simple.

22. What does the underlined “jerk” in the third paragraph mean?

   A. A humorous person.  B. A cruel person.  C. A careless person.  D. An honest person.

23. Why did Marci look in relief after talking with the author?

   A. Because her favourite team won the game,

   B. Because her learned Joe was living a good life.

   C. Because she made an apology to the author.

   D. Because she found she was not mean any longer.

24. What might be the best title for the passage?

   A. Excitement of a Baseball Game.          B. Mental Burden of a Woman

   C. Relief of Finding a Friend.              D. Miracles of Forgiveness.

Emphasis is laid on the necessity that all the objectives to be attained ________into account before staring a new project.

Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.

While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.

The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.

Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.

Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.

The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees.“We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.

12. How are social robots different from household robots?

A. They can control their emotions.    B. They are more like humans.

C. They do the normal housework.    D. They respond to users more slowly.

13. What can Oshbot work as?

A. A language teacher.    B. A tour guide.

C. A shop assistant.    D. A private nurse.

14. We can learn from the last paragraph that social robots will ______.

A. train employees    B. be our workmates

C. improve technologies    D. take the place of workers

15. What does the passage mainly present?

A. A new design idea of household robots.

B. Marketing strategies for social robots.

C. Information on household robots.

D. An introduction to social robots.

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种).That's a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark”.

Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎)semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr.Duane Kraemar, a professor in Texas A&M University Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem”Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first–ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

28.The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to________.

A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

B. save endangered animals from dying out

C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study

D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

29.The underlined word groundbreaking can be interpreted as __________.

   A. especially new    B. pioneering     C. damaging     D. trouble- making

30.The best title for the passage may be ______.

A. China’s Success in Panda Cloning

B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

D. China---the Native Place of Pandas Forever

31.From the passage we know that _______.

A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog

B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit

C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches

D. about two thousand species will probably die out in a century

Cheating(舞弊) is when a person misleads, deceives or acts dishonestly on purpose.  36  . If a basketball team is for kids under 8,it's cheating for a 9-year-old play on the team. At school, in addition to cheating on a test, a kid might cheat by stealing someone else's idea for a science project.  37  .This kind of cheating is called plagiarizing (抄袭).

38   . Jeff is doing it by sneaking(暗中的) answers to a test. And it's also cheating to break the rules of a game or contest or to pretend something is yours when it isn't. When people cheat, it's not fair to other people. It's tempting(诱惑人的) to cheat because it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the rest.  39 , and it won't help on the next test------unless the person cheats again.

40  . They want to get good grades but hate hard work. Other kids might feel like they can't pass the test without cheating. Even though there seems to be a "good reason" for cheating, cheating isn't a good idea.

A. Some kids cheat because they're lazy.

B. Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways.

C. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material(材料).

D. Some kids cheat once and feel so bad that they never do it again.

E. For kids, cheating may happen at school, at home, or while playing a sport.

F. There are plenty of reasons why a kid shouldn't cheat, but some kids have already cheated.

G. Kids may also cheat by copying a book report off the Internet and handing it in as it's his or her original (原先的)work.

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun.

Nobody known who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its uses: it became a symbol of honor and power. In the Far East in ancient times. the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe. the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again It became a symbol of power.

Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

29. Ancient people first used umbrellas as       .

   A. a symbol of honor            B a symbol of power

   C. protection against the sun   D. protection against the rain

30. According to the passage, the umbrella was probably first used in accident

   A. Babylon         B. China          C. Egypt     D. Rome

31. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

   A. The ancient Greeks used the umbrella in their daily life.

   B. Europeans hardly used the umbrella during the middle ages.

   C. The umbrellas for woman were made colorful in ancient times.

   D. The style of the umbrella hasn't changed a lot since it was invented

32. What is the passage mainly about?

   A. The sales of the umbrella.

   B. The history and the use of the umbrella.

   C. The invention of the umbrella.

   D. The differences among umbrellas.

A.     The success story was traced back to the 1960s, when Vancouver decided not to build highways.

B.     Today, around 50 percent of journeys in Vancouver are made through sustainable means.

C.     Vancouver now boasts some of the lowest carbon emissions in the world.

D.     Tree planting proves an effective way in reducing the emission of carbon.

E.     The city planner knew that green transportation had to be a big part of the solution.

F.     Carbon dioxide is the major source of air pollution in big cities in Canada.

In many big cities around, gas-powered vehicles are one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions. Therefore, the Canadian city of Vancouver set ambitious goals of reducing its carbon footprint.     52

The city has managed a near-miraculous transformation.      53    among them cycling, walking, or using public transit have become common forms of transportation. The city once set a goal that by 2020, ten percent of all commutes would take place on bikes. It hit that goal three years early.

54     They city remains the only major North American city with no highways within city limits, says Brent Toderian, Vancouver’s former chief planner. Instead of building a bridge across English Bay, the city chose to create a ferry service.

Today, walking, cycling and public transit all link up so that Vancouver citizens can travel Car-free quite easily. Cycling is the fastest-growing mode of transport in the city. Because almost a quarter of all bike lanes are separated from traffic lanes, people can ride their bikes without having to share their roads with cars and trucks.

In addition to building cycling infrastructure and promoting public transit, Vancouver has also incorporated dozens of electric dozens of the electric cars in its municipal fleet. According to Sadhu Johnston, the city manager, “If we can all drive an electric car, it’s much better for air quality in the city,” he explains.

55     its story shows that small efforts eventually make big difference. It reminds us of an old proverb: The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now. Perhaps more cities should follow Vancouver’s example and begin a serious push to promote sustainable transport right away.
