 Dear Jack,

I am pleasing to hear from you and know that you had a greatly time working part-time in a fast-food restaurant. Now I would like to share your working experience with you during the past summer.

In the beginning of the summer vacation, I was hired as shopping guide in a big supermarket. I stood for ten hours a day and smiled to everyone I have met. Sometimes I was laughed at, and most of the time, I was praised for my wonderful works by many people. Half a month passed quickly after I knew it, and I learned how to deal with different people.

Above all, I have learned that smile is the key to solve any problem.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Ming

The freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota Florida my bags were packed before you could say "sunshine" I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees When we touched down to blue skies and warm air I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness Swimming pools wine tasting and pink sunsetsat normal evening hours not 4 in the afternoon filled the weekend but the best part particularly to my taste dulled by months of cold weather root vegetables was a 7 am adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be more than worth the early wakeup call

The market which was founded in 1979 sets up its tents every Saturday from 700 am to 1 pm.,rain or shine along North Lemon and State streets Baskets of perfect red strawberries the redpainted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck and most of all the tomatoes amazing large soft and round red tomatoes

Disappointed by many a broken vineripened(蔓上成熟的) promise I've refused to buy winter tomatoes for years No matter how attractive they look in the store once I get them home they're unfailingly dry hard and tasteless But I homed in with uncertainty on one particular table at the Brown's Grove Farm's stand full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist These were the real deal and at that moment I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn't be experiencing again for months

Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown's Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton where luckily for me I was planning to have dinner that very night Without even seeing the menu I knew I'd be ordering every tomato on it

1What did the author think of her winter life in New York

A Exciting

B Annoying

C Relaxing

D Boring

2What made the author's getting up late early worthwhile

A Having a swim

B Breathing in fresh air

C Walking in the morning sun

D Visiting a local farmer's market

3What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter

A They are soft

B They taste great

C They look nice

D They are juicy

Sure, it’s good to get along with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.

And yes, it’s good to get along with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to understand the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life.

“But really, there’s one super-important reason why you should get along with your teacher. When you do, learning bursts right open,” says Evelyn Vuko, a longtime teacher who writes an education column called “Teacher Says” for the Washington Post newspaper.

In fact, kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school life, such as bullying.

As a kid in a primary or middle school, you’re at a wonderful stage in your life. You’re like a sponge (海绵), able to absorb lots of new and exciting information. On top of that, you’re able to think about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows that, in most cases, is very excited to be the person who’s giving you all that material and helping you make it. Remember, teachers are people, too, and they feel great if you’re open to what they’re teaching you. That’s why they wanted to be teachers in the first place—to teach!

Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether they like the teacher or not. But most kids are sensitive to the way they get along with the teacher, and if things aren’t going well, they won’t learn as well and won’t enjoy being in class.

35.【小题3 Which of the comments is FALSE on teachers and their work according to the passage?

D. Having a bad relationship with your teachers does more or less harm to your studies.

According to many recent surveysthere are fewer and fewer students reading newspapers from middle school to collegewhich worries both parents and teachers a lotIn my opinionseveral reasons result in this phenomenon

The most significant reason is that the rise of many other information Mediafor exampleinternetmobile phoneTV and so onIn the past we only could read newspapers to know what happened around uswhile now we only need to turn on the TVor open our computerswhich is more convenientIn additioncomputer and other media provide us with more newly news and more specific detailswhich we can get easily and without paymentThere is also an advantage that the new media have while newspapers don't﹣﹣﹣﹣a large mount*of pictureswhich make the information or news more livelyThereforemore and more students tend to surf the internet or watch TV instead of reading newspapers

Another reason that few students read newspapers is that they have little time to do such thingsWe all know that nowadays studentsespecially middle school and high school students are buried in the books almost every day to get good gradesEven in weekendsthey are sent to heterogeneous cram school by their parents to become superior in schoolThus there is little free time for them to do other thingsnot to mention reading newspapers

The students'indifference to the current affairs also enables few newspaper readersThe 90smost of today's studentsalways pay more attention to fashion and only care for themselvesLacking a sense of collectivism and nationalismthe majority of the 90s have little interest in current affairswhich are the basic content of most newspapersso that there are fewer and fewer students reading newspapers

Different outside and inside reasons have contributed to the few newspaper readers among studentsThereforeteachers should encourage their students to form'the habit of reading newspapers regularly and free the students from their heavy study burden so that they can afford to broaden their horizon through newspaperswhich is beneficial for their future development

43According to Paragraph 2few students read newspapers because

A reading newspapers isn't my good for them to get good grades

Bthey are more interested in fashion than current affairs

Cit's cheaper and easier to get information from the Internet or TV

Dthey can only know what is happening via the Internet or on TV

44It can be inferred from the passage that

Ait's better for students to gain information via the Internet than other media

Bhigh school students are too busy with their study now

Cmore and more students are addicted to the Internet now

Dmore students will fall in love with newspapers

45What does the author mostly want to tell us in the passage

AThere are many advantages of reading newspapers

BThere are reasons why few students read newspapers

CThe advantages 0f surfing the Internet are obvious

DIt's very important to read newspapers

A MENTORING(导师制)program is giving life changing opportunities to Banbury youth.

Sooner or later, most students are to take some form of English examinations. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better test taking skills. These abilities really have nothing to do with understanding English better. They are skills that make taking the test easier, and therefore provide better results.

Here are some very important—and often ignored—guidelines to taking a test successfully.

Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. Remember one question may only be worth one point! You will become nervous when you fail to find out its answer, making you lose your concentration and leading to worse results. However, answering the questions you are sure you know results in your being more relaxed and feeling more confident.

Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things.

Usually(but not always) a strong first impulse(冲动) means we know the answer and we don’t really have to think about it too much. Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes a mistake. This is very common, so be very careful!

If you don’t know the answer, write something. If you are answering a 4 possibility multiple choice question you will still have a 25% chance of being correct!

Taking a test is as much for you as is for your teacher, so never cheat. If you cheat, you don’t help yourself in the long run.

1. In the first paragraph, the writer stresses the importance of ______.

A better preparations for exams.              B. better understanding of English.

C. better skills at taking exams.              D. better results of taking exams.

2. When taking an exam, you are advised ______.

A. to first answer the questions which are easier to you.

B. to depend on your first impulse to answer the questions.

C. to search the test paper for all the answers to the questions.

D. to give up the questions whose answers you don’t know.

3. It is common that many students______.

A. pay much attention to their testing skills.         B. often give up a difficult test halfway.

C. often get higher results by cheating.               D. don’t believe in their first impulse.

4. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. Effective Studying Methods.                     B. Effective Test Taking Skills.

C. Getting Better Exam Results.                     D. Being Successful Students.

A woman was walking her dog along a beach in New Zealand in late June when she saw something that looked like a white ball in the sand. It turned out to be a young Emperor penguin that was lost. At his age, he should have been close to the Antarctic, swimming for fish and playing on the ice floes(冰川) . But this penguin started swimming north and just kept going.

The penguin attracted a lot of attention in New Zealand. It has been 40 years since an Emperor penguin was last seen there. Researchers at the Department of Conservation were called in. They decided to watch the penguin closely, but not to disturb it in any way. Many New Zealanders came to Peka Beach to look at the elegant penguin. They were careful to keep their dogs away from it so it wouldn’t be frightened.

The public nicknamed the animal Happy Feet. Researchers started to notice that Happy Feet didn’t seem well. It turns out that he had been eating the sand from the beach, likely thinking it was snow.

The public raised more than 11,000 pounds for an operation to get the sand out of his stomach. The operation was a success, and Happy Feet was taken to a zoo in Wellington, NZ. A group of experts met to decide how to help Happy Feet return to the wild.

Last Sunday, they put him on a boat called the Tangaroa, in a specially built ice-filled box and took him out into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand. There, they released him into the ocean, which is his natural habitat. He took one last look at his human helpers and then dived into the ocean.

“Emperor penguins spend their first five years at sea,” said Peter Simpson of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation. “ What happens now is up to the penguin.”

Happy Feet was fitted with a satellite transmitter(发射机)so they can monitor his progress using the Internet. So far, the trackers shows that he swam northeast for a little while before getting his bearings and heading south.

28. Where is the young penguin supposed to appear?

AOn the sunny beach               B. Inside the hole in the ice.

CNear the Antarctic               DIn the epths of the ocean.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say,“ My spoken English is poor.”_16__I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. __17
__. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that

You know.  _18__Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter.__19___

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.__20___

AThe person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.

BThey may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time.

CObviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary.

DIf you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

EHowever, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”!

FSecond, they are afraid of making mistakes.

GThe second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned

Two years before, I traveled to Brazil and I rented a car. Unfortunate, I had an accident and hit to another car, and I needed to stay in hospital for at least two week. I called my parents, so I did not tell them what had happened. I knew that they will be worried about myself because I was so farther away, and that my mother would not sleep if she knew. Therefore, I told them interested stories and how I was enjoying Brazil. As a result, nobody knew truth. I still think that it was the right thing to do.

I recently got pulled over for speeding not far from my new home in Virginia. I hadn’t been paying attention, and I had driven a few miles an hour over the speed limit.

“Can I see your license and registration?” the police officer asked me. I pulled both out for him, and he saw my Pittsburgh address on my Pennsylvania driver’s license.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Are you with the army?”

“No, I’m not.” I answered. I explained that I had just moved to Virginia, and I hadn’t had time to re-register yet.

       “So what brings you here?”

He had asked a direct question. Without thinking very hard, I gave him a direct answer. “Well, officer,” I said, “Since you’ve asked, I have cancer. I have just months to live. We’ve moved down here to be close to my wife’s family.”

“So you’ve got cancer,” he said flatly. He was trying to figure me out. Was I really dying? Was I lying? He took a long look at me. “You know, for a guy who has only a few months to live, you sure look good.”

He was obviously thinking: “Either this guy is pulling one big fat line on me, or he’s telling the truth.” He was trying to question my honesty without directly calling me a liar. And so he had forced me to prove that I was being honest.

“Well, officer, I know that I look pretty healthy. I look great on the outside, but the tumors are on the inside.” And then, I don’t know what possessed me, but I just did it. I pulled up my shirt, showing the operational scars.

He looked at my scars. He looked in my eyes. He now knew he was talking to a dying man. Well, he wasn’t taking this any further. He handed me back my license. “Do me a favor.” he said, “Slow down from now on.”

The awful truth had set me free. As he went back to his police car, I had a realization. I had been one of those gorgeous blondes (金发美女) who could bat her eyelashes and get out of tickets. I drove home under the speed limit, and I was smiling like a beauty queen.

   A. said it was an excuse                                     B. doubted his honesty

Some people live in the world for body while   61   for dignity(尊严).

She stared at me for a few seconds    66   handed back the money. Quite confused, I asked: “Why not? Isn’t that  67   you want?” “I am not a beggar,” she said     68    (serious), word by word.

Instantly, I felt so sorry. I had intended to help her, completely misunderstanding her. Thus I hurt her. What I could do at that moment was only to drink up the cola and handed her     69   emptied can. This time, she gave me a smile   70   satisfaction and gratitude in her eyes. The woman is poor in material life but is so respectable as a man. I am not only moved but also have learned a good lesson.

The Iron Lady

Margaret Thatcher, known as the Iron Lady, was one of the toughest political women in the world.

As the daughter of a businessman and mayor of Grantham, Margaret was educated at a very famous grammar school.   36   Upon graduation, she worked for four years as a research chemist. She then became a lawyer, doing an excellent job in taxation law, in 1954.
