I am an 18-year-old middle school student. I have been busy with my study and seldom helped my parents with housework. Feel quite sorry for that, I begin to think about how to do to help.
Last Sunday, when my parents went out shopping, I suddenly got an idea: why not gave the rooms a thorough cleaning? Firstly I collected all the books, newspapers and another things scattered in the rooms and put them in the place. Then I wiped the dust off all the furnitures. After that, I swept and mopped the floors.
At this very moment, my parents came back and quite surprised to see all the rooms tidy and floors shining. My mother gave me a hug but I could see satisfaction in her eyes. Tired as I was, I felt quite happily.
With the Chinese language growing in popularity, the UK government plans to invest(投资) 10 million pounds to help more kids learn Mandarin(普通话). Do you think it is necessary for the UK pupils to learn Mandarin? Some people share their opinions online.
Ted(UK): The learning of any language can be valuable and rewarding, but it is not suitable for everyone. Chinese is a difficult language to learn and the UK has a poor reputation for teaching foreign languages. Why should they learn Chinese when most people in the world speak English?
Mark(US): I studied French for 2 years in high school and German for 4 years in college. I studied Mandarin informally for about 4 months before moving to China. Now I speak Mandarin every day as my wife doesn’t speak English. But it is far from being fluent. Learning additional languages is a great thing, which offers a different perspective on the world around us. Nowadays, it’s almost necessary to be able to speak more than just your native tongue.
George (UK): No, unless they’re taught from a very early stage of childhood. Mandarin is so difficult. If China really is going to dominate the world, it’ll have to do so by speaking the world’s dominant language---English.
Sam (UK): I don’t think Chinese will become as widely spoken throughout the world as English. It is too difficult to learn as a second language. To learn Chinese you completely have to devote yourself to learning how to write and read it. If you have to learn it besides other subjects you can’t be good at it. But Chinese will become more popular, and that is a good thing.
1.What is probably Mark’s main motivation(动机)for learning Chinese?
A. Further education. B. Effective communication
C. His frequent travel D. The official policy
2.What does Sam think of learning Chinese?
A. It’s necessary. B. It’s of little use.
C. It takes too much time. D. It’s not popular.
3.What seems to be the major problem when foreigners try to learn Chinese?
A. Its difficulty as a language B. Misunderstanding about China
C. The great popularity of English D. A lack of learning resources.

Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. He now stays in the USA. He smokes a lot of cigarettes every day. He has smoked for nine years. Ali says, “I tried to quit (放弃) smoking in my hometown, but it was impossible. My parents smoke. My brothers smoke. All my friends smoke. At parties and at meetings, almost all the men smoke. Here in the United States, not as many people smoke. 36 ”
Many smokers are like Ali: they want to stop smoking. 37 They know it can cause cancer and heart disease. But it is difficult for them to give up smoking because cigarettes have a drug in them. The drug is nicotine. People who smoke a lot need nicotine.
38 The nicotine makes him sick. In a few days, the smoker’s body is used to the nicotine, and he feels fine. Later, the smoker needs nicotine to keep feeling fine. Without nicotine, he feels bad.
39 Many people who quit will soon smoke again. At a party or at work they will decide to smoke “just one” cigarette. Then they will smoke another cigarette, and another. Soon they become smokers again. 40

C. It will be easier to change the smoking habit here.
D. But it is said that medicine is needed to stop them from smoking.

Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount? 36 . The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. 37 . Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money.
First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time. 38 .
In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing that. 39 .
Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money. They can spend it by giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. 40 . Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. Saving can also open the door to future saving and investing for children.
A. One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money.
B. Some children are good at managing their pocket money.
C. Because helping at home is a normal part of family life.
D. By doing so, these children will learn that spending must be done with a budget.
E. Learning how to make money is very important for every child.
F. They can save it for future use.
G. Timing is another consideration.
I am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited(继承) a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind. I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious, hard-working, successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.
“Was it possible,” I wondered, “to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?”
After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer. I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.
Late one night, I mixed everything together and prepared my drug. I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely, I drank every bitter drop.
I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind—the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. “If this is pure evil,” I thought, “I like it.”
I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room, I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.
At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side. Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man. I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde’s eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of life.

23. From the passage we can learn that the writer ______.
A. felt quite delighted right after taking the drug
B. preferred kind Henry to pure evil Edward
C. was very sick of the shorter Edward Hyde
D. was satisfied with both of his bodies
The university is taking steps to ________ underage drinking on campus.

It’s been just over a year since 9-year-old Zion Harvey received a double-hand transplant(移植), and now, what he really wants to do is playing football. “I feel happy about my new hands, and I don’t feel different. I like that now I can throw a football further than when I didn’t have hands,” he said.
The nation’s youngest hand-transplant patient has been working hard to learn how to use his new hands. He lost his hands and his feet 7 years ago after suffering from a serious infection. In August, the boy showed off his new abilities by throwing out the first ball at a baseball game. Dr. Scott Levin, team leader of Zion’s operation, said Zion was faced with the operation much braver than many adults. “I’ve never seen Zion cry,” Levin said. “He’s just an amazing boy. He has such courage and determination and gives us all inspiration.”
Zion said his courage came from the two most amazing people: his mom and his grandma. His mother, Pattie Ray, said, “It’s been a long journey but now I feel like I am living in my dream. It’s his dream, and it’s mine, too. I’m just living through him, and I’m just here to support him in any way and help him do whatever he wants to do.”
However,Zion told reporters his mom wouldn’t let him try out for football. His mom said it’s too dangerous. She also pointed out that he might be playing against little kids, not professionals, and she told him they would discuss it later. Zion tried to counter her argument. “My next goal: convince Mom to let me play football,” he said.

Imagine one day, the water taps in your house stop running. You have to buy water from shops. And still there isn’t enough for everyone. Your mother has to save the family’s shower water to do other things. Would you be able to stand that kind of life?
Probably not. But that’s what kids in Yemen are experiencing. Experts said Yemen is going to be the first country in the world to run out of water. According to a report, the capital, Sanaa, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025.
Because of the shortage, the government often cuts the water supply. Hannan, 18-year-old from Lahej, told the Times: “In a good week, we’ll have a water supply all week. But then the following week there will be water only for a day or two.”
Hannan said only rich people have enough water to use. They can buy water from the shops or from the water truck. Private companies own the trucks. They travel around the city every day to sell water-at very high prices.
“A lot of people can’t afford it,” she said. The average person in Yemen uses 100 to 200 cubic meters of water per year. That is far below the international water poverty line of 1,000 cubic meters.
The government is thinking of making use of seawater. But it will cost a lot and it may not happen soon enough to help the people of Yemen.

Four years ago, we asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no waiting in lines and no checkout? Or could we create a physical store where customers could simply take what they want and go? Our answer to those questions is Amazon Go, where you could experience the idea of “just walk out shopping”.
Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology, so you never have to wait in line. Time flies! This is a third year that I have been in this school. In the past two and a half years, our school had organized many activities. What impressed me more was an activity called “Learning to Farm”. In an autumn afternoon, we were sent to a farm which we learned to plant potatoes. Having been in the city for so a long time, we were very happy to go to the countryside. After divided into three groups, we started to work. Some students cut potatoes into pieces; some dug holes, and the others put the pieces of potatoes into the hole, put the earth back and pushed them down hard. We continued doing that until all the work was done. Although we were exhausted, but we felt fulfilled on our way back home.
Turning strangers into neighbors and streets into neighborhoods, Neighbors Day Aotearoa is back for the third year as a national celebration of neighborliness.
Neighbors Day Aotearoa (NDA) on 23 — 24 March will give all Kiwis a great opportunity to connect with others in their immediate neighborhood.
Over the weekend, thousands of neighbors all around the country will gather together to get to know each other, and make connections and support systems that will continue to enrich their lives long after the weekend has ended.
A shining example of neighborly spirit inspired by NDA is Victoria Dawson—Wheeler, a 32 — year—old from Arch Hill, Auckland, who won the Neighbors Day Aotearoa story competition last year.
Victoria organized a big breakfast for her whole neighborhood, asking local business to take part by donating enough coffee, muffins, and bacon for everyone who came along.
She also created a gift — swap exercise called “Love thy neighbor” where each participant had to talk with at least two other households in the neighborhood.
It was a huge success. “I was blown away by the generosity and thoughtfulness of everyone present,” she says. “It’s so hard to meet people, nobody wants to be the first to say ‘hi’, but once you’re past that stage it’s great!”
Since Neighbors Day, Arch Hill has become known for its community - mindedness. When babies are born, people drop by with food and clothes for the new parents. When a neighbor is in trouble, people are now much more likely to lend a hand.
“These small but important changes in neighborhoods are what Neighbors Day Aotearoa is all about. More and more of this happening tight around the country will mean neighborliness is increasing in every community. We’re already starting to see this movement grow,” says John McCarthy, one of the organizers.
With better connected streets, neighborhoods, and more everyday neighborliness, New Zealand communities will be stronger and more able to deal with many of the social concerns that exist in Aotearoa.
The Neighbors Day website (www. neighborsday. org. nz) features NDA success stories to help inspire New Zealanders to take part in Neighbors Day. Participants who sign up through the website will be sent a resource pack with lots of great ideas to organize an NDA celebration that works £or their neighborhood.
28. What can we learn about NDA from the text?
A. It will be held in Arch Hill.
B. It is aimed at building neighborly spirit.
C. It’s mainly organized by Victoria Dawson-Wheeler.
D. It gives people a chance to share their neighbor’s stories.
29. How does McCarthy- feel about the latest development of NDA?
A. shocked B. pleased C. worried D. disappointed
30. Which of the following is a change taking place in Arch Hill?
A. Victoria was discouraged by some locals.
B. There is a distance between people’s hearts.
C. More people take part in neighborly activities.
D. Victoria began to create “Love thy neighbor”.
