An interpersonal communication class is one of those courses similar to health or physical education that students often brush off as just another one of those school required classes that are easy to pass. Well, should these interpersonal communication classes be required for all high school students?

After having such a subject as part of the curriculum (课程) in my Communications College major, I believe that this course should be required. Even though it is true that much of the material is common sense to most, there is likely a handful of students who do not know the standard guidelines for communicating interpersonally, either because their family never raised them with the knowledge or they had no place to practice the rules.

To be interpersonally effective in communicating, one must know how to behave confidently in certain situations, how to settle a conflict, and how to moderate behavior and choice of speech among different people or places. If schools required this course in high school, I firmly believe that the graduation as well as college entry percentages of each class would rise rapidly.

My interpersonal communication classes required myself and the other students in my class to team up in groups of two or three on various occasions and practice certain verbal exchanges. The professor would give us scenarios (剧本) and we would have to act out what we would do and say if that situation happened. We performed exercises where we had to read back and forth with our partner practicing different tones of voices and analyze the change in impression each made on the receiving party.

Many people, again, blow interpersonal communication classes off as just a filler class to keep kids in school for an entire day, but I don’t think these people realize how important effective communication skills are when entering into the grown-up, independent, college or employment world. Being able to communicate well has a huge effect on one’s self-esteem (自尊), ability to make friends, competence in an employment position, and the healthiness of a romantic relationship.

It was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she would be working. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided she would start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the building, she had to stand at the lifts and wait several minutes before one arrived. When she finally reached the office marked King Enterprises(公司)”, she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any mind to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realised that the days work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. In Canada and the United States, there is a new group of children called “satellite kids”, who live in one place but whose parents live in another place. Asians are immigrating (移民) to Canada and the United States in larger numbers than ever before.

Most Asians immigrate because they believe that they can give their children a better education in the West. In Asia, especially in China, Japan, and Korea, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave their countries so that their children can go to university. The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. For these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children study in the West. Therefore, these children become “satellite kids”, and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a “satellite kid”. Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kid” problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. To be a “satellite kid” means to grow up in a country where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means to grow up lonely, because your parents are elsewhere. What these “satellite kids” will probably say to their parents is that it’s better to have parents around than to have a university education.

4Some Asian parents send their kids abroad because ________.

As a teacher, my daily activity involves driving to a new school almost every day.

On one particular day, I was teaching in a very   20 classroom. I was managing behavior all morning, and by lunchtime I knew I needed a coffee to     21 the afternoon. So during my lunch break, I drove to a nearby square to get a coffee. Upon returning to the     22 , I realized I had locked my phone and my     23 inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the     24 , which was a good five-minute drive. If I ran back really quickly, I could    25 it. But it was winter, and a sudden fall on the ice would only make the situation much    26 .

So I hurried into a McDonald’s in the same square, and     27 the man at the counter, who happened to be the     28 , to call a taxi for me. After I     29 explained my situation to him, he rushed inside to make the phone     30 I waited anxiously in the restaurant. I had less than 10 minutes to     31 to my school at this point.

A moment later, the manager returned    32 to tell me that the line was     33 , and that he had not been able to     34 the taxi yet. I think both     35 and fear could be seen in my face.

Without a thought, he grabbed his coat and    36 to drive me to the school. Without hesitation, I followed him into his car and got back to the classroom with two minutes to     37 before the bell rang!

This experience made me     38 that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to happen, which has a(n)     39 influence on those who receive them.

A new study says electronic toys are not helping babies learn.

"Even if companies are marketing them as educational, they're not teaching the babies anything at this time," said Anna Sosa the study's author.

Researchers listened to audio(声音的)recordings of parents playing with their babies aged 10 months to 16 months. The researchers compared the experiences when the children played with electronic toys, traditional toys such as blocks, or when the children looked at books. What they found is that parents talked less with their babies when the babies played with electronic toys.

Why is this important? Research shows that how quickly children develop language is often based on what they hear from parents. When the infants played with electronic toys, parents said little to their children. But with traditional toys, such as blocks, parents shared the names and descriptions of the animals, colors and shapes as their children played. There was even more information given by parents as their babies looked at the pictures in books.

Of course, there is no need for parents to throw out electronic toys, but they should look at their infants’ play with such toys as entertainment, not a learning experience.

Toy Industry Association spokeswoman Adrienne Appell responded to the study. She said it is important that parents make time to play with their children. "Playing is a way that kids can learn so much, not only cognitive(认知的) skills, but social and developmental skills," she said. She added that play should be balanced, including time for just "make believe" activities, as well as traditional and electronic toys.

32. What’s Anna Sosa’s attitude towards companies claiming that their toys are educational?

A. supportive               B. doubtful          C. uninterested          D. indifferent

33. We can learn from the text that babies in the research __________.

A. interact less with their parents when playing with electronic toys

B. liked traditional toys better than electronic toys

C. talked little with their parents when playing with electronic toys

34. Children develop language more quickly when their parents __________.

A. buy them a lot of toys

B. teach them how to speak

C. read them picture books often

D. throw away their electronic toys

35. According to Adrienne Appell, playing __________.

A. can’t take the place of learning

B. shouldn’t take most of children’s time

C. can’t develop children’s cognitive skills

D. is good to children’s overall development

My best friend Eva and I are different in many ways, but we have one important thing in common — we love to travel. Whenever I want to visit a new place, I can always invite Eva to go with me.  28

29  Eva is an artist who loves to take photographs and draw pictures of the interesting things she sees. I am a sales manager and spend most of my time calculating numbers. Eva is a very impulsive (冲动的) person, but I’m very organized. She’s very quiet, but I’m a very talkative person.

Eva and I both love traveling.   30  One day we were talking about vacations and we found we had both visited many of the same places. We immediately made a plan to go to a nearby historical city the following weekend.

Although we are quite different in many ways, Eva and I have become close over the years.  31  Every time we get together, we always have so much to talk about and have the best time.  32  The other reason is that our differences complement (补充) each other, so we always get along well whenever we travel together.

A. We always have different opinions.

B. Now we have a very special and deep friendship.

C. The differences between Eva and me are easy to see.

D. We soon forgot our differences and were friends again.

E. We discovered this shortly after we met several years ago.

F. One reason for this is that we share a love of travel and new things.

G. Our friendship shows that people who are very different can still have similar interests.
