Our habits are what shape us---our words, our behavior, and even our life itself.  36

l         Pity yourself.

All bad habits start with never-ending pity for your unhappy self and talking endlessly about your bad luck. Your figure, income, education, apartment, the weather, and even the tiniest inconvenience can become a cause for feeling upset. Those who develop the habit of pitying themselves lose the sympathy (同情) of people around them.  37

l         Assess everything in terms of money.

Some people think that happiness can be achieved by having lots of money and that you can’t really enjoy life if you don’t wear fancy clothes, live in a big house or drive an expensive car.  38  Instead, they think it’s their ability to attract it. A truly successful person is not totally dependent on his or her money.

l         39

Scientists say that people who don’t feel like they belong in their jobs are very likely to feel unhappy and live in poverty. The reason for this is their feelings that make them do what they don’t want and don’t like to do. To get rid of this habit for good, you should put your strength and energy into something satisfying. This is the only way to achieve excellent results.

l         Stay away from your relatives.

40  .  And that’s obvious, because it’s the only place where you can find relief and support when everything comes crashing down around you.

A. Do what you don’t like.

B. It’s time to change your living pattern!

C. As a result, they often have low-paid jobs.

D. Nobody wants to be around those people.

E. Most successful people love and cherish their family the most.

F. And among them are some habits that should be avoided at all costs.

G. However, wise people do not refer to wealth as the amount of money they get.

Should We Help Others?

We used to think highly of those who like to help others. But nowadays people tend to be very cautious of helping others. Recently our class had a discussion about whether we should help others.

Supposing he never ____ (come), what would happen then?

On one of her trips to New York several years ago, Eudora Welty decided to take a couple of New York friends out to dinner. They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.

“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”

Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.

“They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”

Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi.

“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”

Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.

“I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”

Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.

A. readers     B. parties     C. friends   D. stories[Z-X-X-K]

7.What can we learn about the characters in Welty’s fiction?

    A. They live in big cities.

    B. They are mostly women.

    C. They come from real life.

    D. They are pleasure seekers.

Anna Schiferl hadn’t even got out of bed when she reached for her cellphone and typed a text to her mom, one recent Saturday. Mom was right downstairs in the kitchen. The text? Anna wanted an egg for breakfast. Soon after, Joanna Schiferl called, “If you want to talk to me, Anna, come downstairs and see me!” Anna laughs about it now. “I was kind of being lazy,” she admits.

These days, many people with cellphones prefer texting to a phone call. And that’s creating a communication divide of sorts—the talkers vs. the texters. Some would argue that it’s no big deal. But many experts say the most successful communicators will, of course, have the competence to do both. And they fear that more of us are unable to have—or at least are avoiding—the traditional face-to-face conversations.

Many professors say it is not common to see students outside of class. “I sit in my office hours lonely now because if my students have a question, they e-mail me, often late at night,” says Renee Houston, a professor at the University of Puget Sound in Washington State. “And they never call.”

As Anna sees it: “There are people you’ll text, but won’t call. It’s just a way to stay in touch with each other.” Some believe that scores of texts each day keep people more connected. “The problem is that the conversation isn’t very deep,” says Joseph Grenny, co-author of the book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High.

“The problem has been there since we’ve had telephones—probably since the time of a telegraph,” Grenny says. Texting is just the latest way to do that. Though they may not always be so good at deep conversations themselves, Grenny suggests that parents model the behavior for their children and put down their own cell phones. He says that they also should set limits, as Anna’s mom did when she made the “no texting to people in the same house” rule.

28.          According to Paragraph 1, Joanna              .

A.   did not know how to use a cell phone       B. was very strict with her daughter

C. was angry that her daughter got up late     D. did not have any breakfast that morning

29.          The underlined word “competence” in Paragraph 2 probably means

A.   chance                   B. courage                  C. ability                     D. patience

30.          In Joseph Grenny’s opinion,               .

A.   cell phones make people lonelier

B.   telephones help people communicate clearly

C.   talking should be encouraged instead of texting

D.   texting helps people have deeper conversations

31.          What is the passage mainly about?

A.   why is communication important?

B.   is texting ruining the art of conversation?

C.   how does texting affect kids at school?

D.   how can we avoid one-sided conversations?

From the moment we’re born, we begin to die, but death is actually a fairly

new invention. As a natural way of life, death has been around for only a small percentage of the time that life has been on our planet.

Out planet is about 4.6 billion years old. Life began about 3.8 billion years ago. For most of those 3.8 billion years, living creatures were immortal(不死的), and did not die. From 3.8 billion years ago to one billion years ago, each living creature

was made up of a single cell. A single-celled creature would grow to a certain size, and then split into two, and each of those two cells would then keep on growing until they divided and so forth. These single–celled creatures would never die of old age. They might die from being run over by a rolling stone, or from being eaten by another bigger single-celled creature, but apart from that they would not die.

But about one billion years ago, some of the single-celled beings evolved into

creatures with many different types of cells. These new creatures had some cells for thinking, other cells for moving, other cells for digestion, and so on. And at the same time, death was born. It seems strange, but there actually are a few advantages of dying---at least, as far as the species is concerned.

Firstly, an immortal species can’t adapt to any changes in the environment. Only their children, with a slightly different DNA, can. Another disadvantage of immortality is that the parents and their kids would be fighting for the same amount of food. And thirdly, the DNA of these immortal creatures would constantly be damaged by radiation from space, and chemicals in the

environment, leading to more shortcomings in the eggs carried by the mother.

56.    What does the writer mean by saying that death is a new invention? (No more than 20 words)

57.    What does the word “evolved” underlined in Paragraph 3 mean? (No more than 2 words)

58.    Do singled-celled creatures die? If so, what do they die from?

(No more than 15 words)

59.    According to the passage, what’s the relationship between mortal creatures and immortal creatures?  (No more than 10 words)

60.    What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?  (No more than 10 words)

It is generally believed that we are getting cleaned when we step under a shower. We are, but we’re also giving a home to lots of tiny little creatures we didn’t even know about. A shower head carries thousands o f bacteria called Mycobacterium. These can cause problems like coughs and tiredness, and a general feeling of being sick. When you turn on the water, the bacteria go from the shower head onto and into your body.

This is a finding of Norman R. Pace and his team at the University of Colorado, in the US. Pace's team looked at 45 shower heads in nine American cities. They discovered that 30 percent of them had large amounts of flying Mycobacterium.

But Pace said that they pose few threats to the health. Only those with a weak immune system might need to worryHe told the New York Times that the bacteria are not as unpleasant as might be thoughtHe said that having a shower is no more dangerous than anything else we do in the morning

But for those who feel sick about the idea of all those microorganisms (微生物), he had some advice. Let the water run for 30 seconds before getting into the shower. Why? The number of bacteria is smaller than that when the water is just turned on. If that seems like a waste of water, he added that you could also change your shower head every few months.

However, Pace had good news too. He has also been testing the air in US subways. Apart from iron particles (粒子), which are ground off the track by the wheels of trains, subway air is fresh. The reason is that a train’s movement pumps fresh outdoor air into the tunnels.

1. From the finding of Norman R. Pace, after taking a shower, we might cough or feel tired because   _______.    .

  A. it’s easy to get a cold when taking a bath  B. the shower head carries many bacteria causing illness

  C. we don’t get cleaned while showering    D. we don’t get a weak immune system

2.We can learn from the third paragraph that    ______   .

  A. the bacteria always threat people’s health

  B. there is no need to fear microorganisms for people with strong immune system.

  C. the bacteria always threat people’s health when people have a shower

  D. it is better to do some exercise in the morning than have a shower.

3. What contributes to fresh air in US subways?

  A. The train’s movement.                B. Iron particles

  C. Train wheels.                       D. Air conditioners on the trains

A. hopefully  B. approximately  C. seemingly  D. frequently

“A serious attack on the fairy tale as children’s literature comes from those who don’t wish children to be frightened,” writes C.S. Lewis in an essay.

Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. First, they mean that we mustn’t do anything likely to make children frightened. Secondly, they want to keep out of their minds the fact that they are born into a world of death, violence, pain, and adventure. C.S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second.

He comments that “since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights (骑士) and heroic courage. By limiting your child life in which nothing at all alarming ever happens, you would fail to drive away the terrors, but would succeed in driving away all that can make them brave.”

I love the story about St. George. It may be hard to find, but make an effort to make your children familiar with St. Georgy and the Dragon by Margaret Hodges to see the best of this tale. It is a successful adaptation from Spenser’s Faierie Queen. It begins with “in the days when monsters and giants and fairy folk lived in England, a noble knight was riding across the plain It’s a keeper, if you can find one to buy.

Bruno Bettelheim, a well—known child psychologist, also comments that fairy tales provide children with an invaluable education. He believes that all children have a rich supply of personal fantasies (幻想) filled with fears and anxieties and that fairy tales comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.

A good fantasy suggests rather than tells possible answers to life. I believe that reading fantasy literature quickens the ability to transfer ideas from tales to reality. It’s what good literature does — it makes life larger.

32. C. S. Lewis may probably agree that         .

A. children shouldn’t be exposed to death or violence

B. children should read fairy tales to learn about the real world.

C. children should be brave and have rich imagination

D. children shouldn’t be allowed to read frightening stories.

33. What do we know about St. George and the Dragon?

A. It is worth keeping.                                                   B. It was written by Spenser.

C. It tells a beautiful love.                                             D. It is difficult for children to read.

34. In the text, Bruno Bettelheim believes that fairy tales         .

A. show what happy life is                                            B. are filled with fears and pain

C. cause children too much anxiety                             D. teach children how to solve problems

35. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Why reading fantasy literature matters to children

B. Whether people should read fairy tales

C. How parents should choose books for kids

D. What books children should read

I took the Harvard Summer School program in my vacation. During my stay there, I spend a lot of time studying in the main library Widener. I enjoyed myself in the ocean of knowledges, either doing research for my papers or read special edition books. The library, which it is named after its donor Harry Widener, stands right next to the Emerson building of philosophy. Opening a pair of heavy yet elegant metal doors, I was immediate bathed in warm light. I wandered around the library, fascinating to find one treasure after other.

The library is a amazing place. One can fully experience the academic atmosphere only he visits the library. For me, the library as well as the courses explain Harvard’s place as the home of devoted scholars.

A. annoyed    B. annoying

C. to annoy    D. being annoyed

One day, I was cooking in the kitchen while the telephone rang. I went to answer it immediately. She was my close friend, Lisa. When we were talking on phone, the fire alarm sounds. I ran back to the kitchen only to find the room full of smoke and the beef bad burnt. I quickly turned off the gas, opening all the windows, and then went out of the house. In my surprise, the two fire engines were outside my house. I was quite worrying. I told the firemen that it was my careless cooking which caused the heavy smoke.

As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their writings are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being used more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”

“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

      B. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently

      C. they find it not easy to remember how to write a character
