Tomorrow was his girlfriend’s birthday and the young man was having a difficult time deciding on a present for her. She already had more clothes than she knew what to do with them, so he couldn’t get any kind of apparel. She never ate sweets, so candy was out of the question. What then? He had a very special reason for wanting to impress her with just the right gift; tomorrow he was going to make an offer of marriage to her. He finally decided on perfume(香水). All girls liked perfume. That raised another problem, however. What kind did she prefer? He couldn’t ask her because that would ruin the surprise.
At last the young man hit upon a brilliant idea. That afternoon, pretending to take his girlfriend’s fox terrier, little dog for a walk, the young man and the dog went directly to the perfume counter of the town’s biggest department store. Good! There was a large array(长列)of perfume. He beckoned(招呼)a clerk, instructing her to open a large number of bottles and wave the stoppers under the dog’s nose. Nestled in the young man’s arms, the terrier began to be restless and bored as this seemingly pointless game went on. Then Fritz suddenly became frisky, wiggling in the young man’s arms and barking excitedly, as the clerk waved one stopper under its nose.
“I’ll take that one,” said the young man to the clerk. The price was high, but it was worth it, he thought.
“ My favorite perfume!” said the delighted girl the next evening as she unwrapped the package. “ How did you know?” she asked, dabbing some perfume behind each ear.
“ Intuition(直觉), I guess.” Said the young man, deciding that it wasn’t exactly wrong to tell a lie under the circumstances. One day, after they were married, he would admit that his intuition had really been a little dog named Fritz.

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport(护照).
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.

One advantage of the Internet is shopping conveniently online for clothes; one disadvantage of the Internet is also shopping conveniently online for clothes.
“Nothing fits,” said Lam Yuk Wong, a senior in electrical and computer engineering at Rice University. “Everyone says this. They order clothes and they don’t fit. People get very unhappy.”
Wong and her design partner, Xuaner “Cecilia” Zhang, are Team White Mirror, creators of what they call a “virtual (虚拟)fitting room”. Their goal is simple and consumer-friendly: to let online clothing shoppers have a perfect fit and a perfect look when shopping every time. Both women are from China, Wong from Hong Ko ng and Zhang from Beijing. They both order most of their clothing online. They got the idea from their own experience as consumers and from listening to the complaints of friends and relatives. “They say, ‘The color is wrong’ or ‘I got the right size but it still does not fit.’ We want to make it like you’re in the store trying on the clothes,” Zhang said.
Using a Kinect developed by Microsoft for use with its Xbox 360 video game player, Zhang scans Wong and turns her image into, in effect, a virtual model, keeping Wong’s dimensions (尺寸), and even her skin and hair color. “We put the clothes on the shopper’s 3-D body models and show how they look when they are dressed,” Wong said. So far, Wong and Zhang have adapted the software to show dresses and shirts, and they are now working on shorts.
Asked if she thought men as well as women might be interested in using their virtual fitting room, Wong said, “I think their wives will care about this, so it will also be important to men.”
4. Why is shopping conveniently online for clothes a disadvantage?
A. Students may easily get addicted to it.
B. Clothes bought online may not fit.
C. It attracts more online clothing shoppers.
D. It causes shoppers to waste too much money.
5. Wong and Zhang got the idea to design a virtual fitting room from ____.
A. their shopping experiences B. a program at their university
C. some shop-owners’ complaints D. the Xbox 360 video game player
6. Which of the following shows the process of using the virtual fitting room?
A. scanning -- trying on clothes -- getting images
B. trying on clothes -- getting models -- scanning
C. scanning -- getting models --trying on clothes
D. trying on clothes -- getting images -- scanning
7. What did Wong think of her virtual fitting room?
A. It is perfectly developed. B. It will have its market share.
C. It is limited to women shoppers. D. It is like a kind of video game player.

Trampolining
What’s more fun than standing still? Jumping up and down on a springy piece of fabric(织物)! This activity is known as trampolining and it’s seeping the nation.
The idea of trampolining is ancient. Eskimos have been throwing each other in the air for thousands of years. Firemen began using a life net to catch people jumping from buildings in 1887. 36
A gymnast named George Nissan and his coach Larry Griswold made the first modern trampoline in 1936. They got the idea by watching swing artists bouncing off of a tight net at the circus. They named their equipment after the Spanish word trampolín, which means diving board. 37 In 1942 they began making trampolines to sell to the public.
___ 38 Experts find that more than 100,000 people hurt themselves while using one each year. Clubs and gyms use large safety nets or other equipment to make it safer. Most trampoline injuries happen at home. Since trampolines are more affordable than ever, injuries are even more common.
These injuries happen for many reasons. People may bounce too high and land off of the trampoline or onto the springs. 39 Perhaps the worst injuries happen when untrained people try to do flips (快速翻转). Landing on your neck or head can cause injuries or even kill you.
But don’t let all that bad news keep you down. There are many things that you can do to practice safe trampolining. Trampolines have been around for a while now. They have brought a lot of joy to many people. They can be a good source of exercise and activity. 40 But they can also be deadly. It is important to follow some professional guidance. Be sure that you are practicing safety while having a good time. Happy bouncing!
A. They can help people improve their balance and moves.
B. Trampolines may be fun, but they can also be dangerous.
C. The men wanted to share their idea with the whole world.
D. Injuries also happen when many people are jumping at the same time.
E. You can surround your trampoline with a net so that people don’t fall off of it.
F. They found a winner when they performed a piece of spring across a steel frame.
G. And in the early 1900s, circus performers began bouncing off of netting to amuse audiences.

Bobby White works as a police officer in Gainesville, Florida. One day, he was told to investigate a noise complaint. A group of boys were playing basketball in the street. Instead of blaming the boys or sending them home, White joined them.
White started shooting baskets with the kids. And a few minutes later, some more boys came and played the game. The camera on White’s police car recorded the event. The police department posted the video online. It was seen over 15 million times.
Before he left the boys, White said he would come back again with “backup”. That is what police officers say when they are appealing for help from other officers.
As the video spread, a basketball star became interested in what happened in Gainesville. That player was Shaquille O’Neal. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the National Basketball Association championship. He also played for the Orlando Magic, a team not far from Gainesville.
The other day, O’Neal visited the Gainesville police and spoke with White. And then they went out to “the scene”. That is what police officers call the area where a crime happened. But of course, there was no crime.
This time, White told the boys, “I told you I was going to bring some backup. Right? You guys ready?” And O'Neal turned up from a nearby car. The kids got really excited. O'Neal played basketball with the boys and other officers as a crowd gathered. O’Neal eventually gathered the boys together and gave some wise words, “Be a leader, not a follower”, “Respect your peers(同龄人) and your elders”, and “You can be whatever you want to be”.

Alex Pang's amusing new book The Distraction Addiction addresses those of us who feel panic without a cellphone or computer. And that,he claims,is pretty much all of us.When we're not online, where we spend four months annually,we're engaged in the stressful work of trying to get online.
The Distraction Addiction is not framed as a self﹣help book. It's a thoughtful examination of of how technological advances change consciousness.A"professional futurist",Pang urges an approach which he calls"contemplative (沉思的) computing."He asks that you pay full attention to"how your mind and body interact with computers and how your attention and creativity are influenced by technology."
Pang's first job is to free you from the common misconception that doing two things at once allows you to get more done. What is commonly called multitasking is,in fact, switch﹣tasking, and its harmful effects on productivity are well documented.Pang doesn't advocate returning to a pre﹣Internet world.Instead,he asks you to"take a more ecological view of your relationships with technologies.Modern devices or media may be making specific tasks easier or faster but at the same time making your work and life harder."
The Distraction Addiction is particularly fascinating on how technologies have changed certain fields of labor﹣often for the worse. For architects, computer﹣aided design has become essential but in some ways has cheapened the design process. As one architect puts it,"Architecture is first and foremost about thinking…and drawing is a more productive way of thinking"than computer﹣aided design.Somewhat less amusing are Pang's solutions for kicking the Internet habit. He recommends the usual behavior﹣controlling approaches, familiar to anyone who has completed a quit﹣smoking program.Keep logs to study your online profile and decide what you can knock out, download a program like Freedom that locks you out of your browser,or take a"digital Sabbath (安息日)":"Unless you're a reporter or emergency﹣department doctor, you'll discover that your world doesn't fall apart when you go offline."
4.Alex Pang's new book is aimed for readers who .
A.find their work online too stressful
B.go online mainly for entertainment
C.are fearful about using the cellphone or computer

D.Examine the influence of technology on the human mind.
6.What is the common view on multitasking?
A.It enables people to work more efficiently.
B.It is in a way quite similar to switch﹣tasking.
C.It makes people's work and life even harder.
D.It distracts people's attention from useful work.
7.What is Alex Pang's recommendation for Internet users?
A.They use the Internet as little as possible.
B.They keep a record of their computer use time.
C.They exercise self﹣control over their time online.

Jimmy is an automotive mechanic, but he lost his job a few months ago. He has good heart, but always feared applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please. I insist.” Jimmy agreed.
Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself.
Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.
“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and they shared a cup of well-deserved coffee as he landed himself a new job.

I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.
There,a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later,in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription.I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.
This scenario(场景)is my nightmarish(噩梦般的)vision of the future, which hasn’t come to pass----at least not yet.
I should say I really do like many aspects of technology.I am a big fan of air conditioning in the summer and heaters in winter. But I am writing this because I don’t want machines to take over.
When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line,I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store,I feel like shouting:"When it comes to cashiers(收银员),make mine human, please!"
After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying.Even more than that,real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day.A cashier may also show compassion for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.
Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so crucial to everyday life.
It is being human that prompts(促使)us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have.
32.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraph?
A.To indicate high technology can make our future life very efficient
B.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors
C.To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life
D.To predict how technology can affect the we see a doctor in the future
33.What is the main reason that the author prefers being served by humans rather than by robots?
A.Robots don’t offer to give store coupons B.Robots are indifferent and emotionless
C.Services from robots cost less time and more money D.Robots can’t do a job as well as humans do
34.What does the underlined word “element” mean in the eighth paragraph?
A.Humor B.The ability to speak C.Methods D.Effective communication
35.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.The opinion about using man or machine B.Machines give people a lot of convenience
C.Being human service is better than service from machines D.Being human service cost little money

You had better learn to be grateful. If you are grateful, you naturally 41 yourself up to receive all kinds of blessings and good things in life. You can receive almost everything you want 42 . If you want recovery soon, start by feeling grateful that you are still 43 . If it is more money that you want, start being grateful for whatever 44 of money you already have.
You see, showing gratitude(感恩) is the key to every 45 thing in life. It is the key to successful relationships, it is the key to successful futures and it is the key to 46 healthier and happier lives. And this is where the importance of being grateful lies. 47 , it makes life better.
One of my favorite 48 is“If you learn to appreciate more of what you already have, you will find yourself having more to appreciate.”Think about that!
Something as 49 as a“Thank you for being in my life”or“I 50 having you here with me”,
can go a long way. It will make the other person feel good, and 51 it also will make you feel better!
So maybe your wife is not very 52 around the house, but she’s great at cooking your favorite
53 . Or, maybe your child 54 milk all over your new shirt right before you walked out of the door for work, but usually he makes you laugh so much and makes you 55 the luckiest parent in the world.
I strongly 56 you to make a promise to yourself for the next week. Decide to 57 every morning and think of at least 5 things that you are 58 for. Then say them out loud. You will notice a smile on your face without even 59 . In 30 days you will feel completely renewed. This is the
