I rode a bus to my office ten miles away in last month. I carried only a few cash to last each week. One night, as I walk to the usual bus stop, I met a beggar whom had no legs. I stopped and opened my wallet, but I was discovered that I had no money at all. I apologized to him immediate. I became worried so I had no way to get home. At my surprise, the beggar pulled out many coin from his broken bowl. Embarrassed, I took enough for his bus fare, and he said, “Good luck!”
A study of English learning problems was carried out among a tolal of 106 foreign students. It shows that most students
considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This was followed by speaking. Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficultties in writing
papers that they were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant problem.
The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course. Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation, we considered it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may
help because it is different.
Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining or increasing motivation. Several years ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it into line with the expressed language needs of the students.
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. Foreign students have more problems.
B. Teaching should meet students' needs.
C. English learning problems should be studied again.
D. There are many ways to improve English.
25. Writing became a bigger problem when foreign students _____.
A. became less interested in reading
B. became better at speaking
C. had to write their papers
D. had fewer problems with listening
26. We may infer from the last two paragraphs that _____.
A. teaching content should be changed halfway
B. grammar-based teaching seems to be encouraging
C. English courses are necessary for foreign students
D. different teaching methods should be used
27. The word "it" underlined in the last paragraph refers to "_____".
A. re-think B. timetable C. motivation D. activity
“Let’s have a journey. Why not fly out and meet me, Dad?” I say one day.
My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thoughts, and his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.
My father sees me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.
He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.
“What's our first stop?” asks my father.
“What time is it?”
“Still don't have a watch?”
Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.
“Unbelievable,” he says. “How was this done?”
A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture and then left the final touches to his son.
We stare up and I ask myself, “Would I ever devote my life to anything?”
No directions, no goals. I always used to hear those words in my father's voice. Now I hear them in my own.
The next day we’re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.
“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I ask.
“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other — but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”
That last sentence — it’s probably the same thing I’d say about my father. And what I’d want my child to say about me.
In Glacier National Park, my father says, “I've never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world. I can keep traveling, I realize — and maybe a regular job won't be as dull as I feared.
Weeks after our trip, I call my father.
“The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We've got to take another trip like that sometime.”
I tell him I've decided to settle down, and I'm wearing a watch.

One day, a mother horse told her son, “My child, will you happily go and carry this bag of wheat to the mill (磨坊) to grind it into flour?” The little horse happily agreed without hesitation, and ran out of the house with a bag of wheat on his back.
After quite a long journey, the little horse came to a river, which blocked his path to the mill. He suddenly got confused. Looking around, he saw a cow. So he asked the cow, “Auntie Cow, can you tell me whether I can cross the river?” The cow answered, “Definitely you can. The water is very shallow.” When the little horse was about to cross the river, a squirrel shouted to him, “Little horse, don't cross the river. You will drown.” The little horse didn't know what to do, so he decided to go back to ask his mother.
After he told his mother everything that happened on his way, his mother said, “My child, it's not enough to only listen to others; you have to give it a try by yourself, and then you'll know the answer.”
With those words, he walked carefully across the river. The water was neither shallow nor deep. It was just fine for him. Finally the little horse crossed the river and completed his task.

We have a problem, and the strange thing is that we not only know about it, but also celebrate it. Just today, someone boasted (自夸) to me that she was so busy she’s averaged four hours of sleep a night for the last two weeks. She wasn’t complaining; she was proud of the fact. She is not alone.
Why are rational (理性的) people so irrational in their behavior? The answer is that we’re in the midst of a bubble (泡沫). I call it “The More Bubble”.
The nature of bubbles is that something is overvalued until—eventually—the bubble bursts, and we’re left wondering why we were so irrational in the first place. The thing we’re overvaluing now is the opinion of doing it all, having it all, achieving it all.
This bubble is being enabled by a combination of three powerful trends: smart phones, social media, and extreme consumerism (消费主义). The result is not just information overload, but opinion overload. We are more aware than at any time in history of what everyone else is doing and, therefore, what we should be doing. In the process, we have been sold a bill of goods: that success means being supermen and superwomen who can get it all done. Of course, we boasted about being busy—it’s code for being successful and important.
And our answer to the problem of more is always more. We need more technology to help us create more technologies. We need to move our workload to free up our own time to do yet even more.
Luckily, there is a solution to asking for more: asking for less, but better. A growing number of people are making this change. I call these people Essentialists.
These people are designing their lives around what is essential and removing everything else. These people arrange to have actual weekends (during which they are not working). They create technology-free zones in their homes. They trade time on Facebook with calling those few friends who really matter to them. Instead of running to different meetings, they put space on their plans to get important work done.
So we have two choices: We can be among the last people caught up in “The More Bubble, ” or we can join the growing community of Essentialists and get more of what matters in our one precious life.

A. give up certain things for what matters in life

A. Supportive. B. Undecided.

Profi Cheese Slicer
Uses a thin wire to slice up to medium-hard cheeses in four inch sections.
I may own every cheese slicer ever made.I prefer a wire type cheese cutter so I can cut slices that work well on a piece of bread and sandwich.
This cheese slicer is great for both tasks. It even has adjustable tension on the two cutting wires.A point of information: I did break a wire cutting a very hard piece of cheese with black pepper.Good news, the wire is replaceable, and I was able to purchase new wires to fix it.Maybe best to use on softer cheeses.Lessons learned. But, highly recommended for every other use except for those extremely hard cheeses.

The king was to pass by a beggar’s small poor house and the man was excited, not because he was about to see the king but because the king was known to part with expensive jewels and huge sums of money when moved by sympathy.
He saw the king’s carriage just when a kind man was filling his begging bowl with uncooked rice. Pushing the man aside, he ran into the street, shouting praises of the king and the royal family.
The carriage stopped and the king beckoned to the beggar.
“Who are you?” he asked. “One of the most unfortunate of your people,” said the beggar. “Poverty sits on my doorstep and follows me about like a dog. I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon!” “Have you nothing for your king except great sorrow?” said the ruler, putting out his hand. “Give me something.” The beggar, astonished, carefully picked up 5 grains of rice from his bowl and laid them on the king’s outstretched palm. The king drove away. The beggar’s disappointment was great. He complained and cursed the king again and again for his miserliness.
When he returned home in the evening he found a bag of rice on the floor. “Some generous soul has been here,” he thought and took out a handful of rice from the bag. To his astonishment, there was a small piece of gold in it. He realized then that the bag had been sent by the king. He emptied the rice on the floor, feeling sure there would be more gold pieces in it, and he was right. He found 5, one for each grain of rice he had given the king.
“It is not the king who has been miserly,” thought the man, sadly. “If I had been generous and given him the whole bowl of rice, I would have been a rich man today.”

I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(收成)of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!

D. To ask them to share some interesting stories.
11. What did the writer most probably think of the time he spent in the garden?
A. It was too long B. It was wonderful.
C. It was not as good as he thought. D. It was too terrible.
Last September, the public library at Saint-Omer near Calais in France was preparing an exhibit on English literature. While going through the library’s collections, Rémy Cordonnier came across a copy of Shakespeare’s plays, listed in their records as a reprint from the 18th century. It was missing close to 30 pages, including the title page.
This is the first and most comprehensive collection of Shakespeare’s plays. As we know, Shakespeare became popular only much after his death in 1616 and his original manuscripts (手稿) never survived. About 20 of his works are available to us today only because of the efforts of John Heminge and Henry
This was the first time a folio edition was used only for plays in England. Earlier folios were just used for influential works such as encyclopedias (百科全书) and reference books. Plays were frivolous, since they were considered “entertainment”. The original edition consisted of 750-800 copies, of which only a quarter are available today. When published, they were only sold for around 15 shillings to a pound (20 shillings) each. It was thought that the books were originally brought out for use by theatre groups.
Evidence suggests that some copies available today were compiled (汇编) in the mid-19th century by owners who only then began to realize their importance. Several books are known to have been lost. The British Library owns 4 copies. In the early 20th century, Henry Folger, President of Standard Oil, collected the largest number of 82 folios.
The First Folio at Saint-Omer is believed to be the 233rd discovery and could be worth between $6-7 million. Meanwhile, Saint-Omer has made plans to digitize the book and make it available online. The original will be locked up in their safe along with other rare books in their library.

B. Most of them were brought out for encyclopedias.

Trust has been regarded as the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe. 36 Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us?
37 With whom will you share things that you don’t want everyone to know? It would be with a close friend, whom you trust as much as you trust yourself. While a few of your friend may be fiercely protective of their privacy and may not tell their secrets to anyone, those who do, surely find you trustworthy and reliable.
Whom do you look up to for advice when you need it the most? It has to be either your parents or your friends. 38 This is a shining example of trust. You only seek advice from people you hold in high regard and find dependable. The friends who trust you will never forget to include you in the important decisions of their life.
Arguments and heated discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship. 39 While some people find it difficult to forgive and forget, your friends will never have problems moving on. It is because they trust you and believe that you will never cause any pain to them on purpose.
There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier. 40 Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement. You can determine that they trust you and believe in your beliefs, if they side with you when you need them the most.
A. If your friends share their secrets, there’s a good possibility that they have much
faith in you.
B. People can be extraordinarily jealous sometimes.
C. Two people cannot have identical reaction to a situation and different opinions do exist.
D. In fact, winning trust is, by far, the most challenging aspect of relationships.
E. No matter how close you are to your friend, you cannot take that comfort level for granted.
F. However, people who are fortunate to have been blessed with true friends are never alone in any battle.
G. You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion.
