When Tom Szaky sees a juice container thrown away, he doesn't see rubbish, but he sees a pencil case. Sweet wrappers? A beautiful kite! But these are not the imaginings of a dreamer. For the 28-year-old CEO of Trenton, New Jersey-based TerraCycle, they’re a business model.

The fast-talking Szaky is leading the new industry of upcycling(升级改造). Instead of recycling (shredding or breaking down materials and enabling them to be reproduced as other products), TerraCycle takes packaging headed for landfills(废物填埋地)and reuses it - more or less whole. TerraCycle’s 85 employees make nearly 200 products, sold at shops such as Petco, Kmart, Whole Foods Market, and Target.

Szaky’s $7.4 million company, now also moving ahead in Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom and Brazil, is quite different from the business he founded with classmate Jon Beyer in 2002 as a freshman at Princeton University. The two entered a business competition with a plan to sell organic plant fertilizers made from worm waste. They lost the competition, but started the business anyway.

With their goal - to make products entirely out of rubbish - suddenly clear, Szaky knew the time was right to drop out of Princeton.

TerraCycle’s first product used dining-hall waste to feed the worms and thrown-away bottles to package the fertilizer. The result: a cheap, green breakthrough. Word spread, and in 2004, Home Depot began carrying the fertilizer in its Canadian stores.

To Szaky, waste does not exist in nature. TerraCycle is a “second chance” employer of, say, a piece of furniture, an ice-cream container. As Szaky points out, “The biggest problem with most green, fair-trade, and organic products is that they tend to cost more. At TerraCycle, everything is made from rubbish, and rubbish is free. People should be able to protect the planet without having to pay a cost for that right.”

28. What is Tom Szaky now?

    A. The CEO of TerraCycle.             B. An employee of Home Depot.

    C. A student at Princeton University      D. The manager of a food company.

29. How did Szaky get the idea of upcycling?

    A. From his visits to foreign companies.

    B. From his studies at Princeton University.

    C. Through shopping at big stores in America.

    D. Through the experience of a business competition.

30. What is the goal of TerraCycle?

    A. To make cheap and green products.

    B. To recycle waste materials in another way.

    C. To make products completely out of rubbish.

    D. To change worm waste into organic plant fertilizers.

31. What is the advantage of upcycling according to Szaky?

    A. The cost is kept rather low.       B. More materials are available.

    C. It has a large promising market    D. Its products are environmentally friendly.

With the development of society, it is common that many people are rushing all the way and all day, tired and sub-healthy.____16____ She described all the things she had to do--- one was to make her bed ---from the moment she woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I’d been brought up by wolves in a forest.____17____

Two weeks later she went into my office merrily. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years--- and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what?” she said. “I don’t dry my dishes anymore, either.”

____18____ One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less than perfect. This story shows an important principle about managing time: no one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs(利弊权衡). The problem is that many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves._____19_____

So what is the solution? There’s an easy way. Decide what  you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. _____20_____ The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.

A. Most people do not take time to relax themselves.

B. The point is to do something for yourself every day.

C. This woman had made two major breakthroughs.

D. A patient came to see me about the stress in her life.

E. Above all, you needn’t do anything for yourself regularly

F.They put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own.

G. However, she went along with my idea.

The _______ explanations caused understandable confusion.

       A. temporary               B. confidential      C. ideal              D. contradictory

Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical depression. That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression.Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression.Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activitieslow energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.

In the new studyAmerican investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnalwhich means they sleep during the day and are active at night.

The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their nighttime period.Another group was placed in front of a blue lighta third group slept in front of a white lightwhile a fourth was put in front of a red light.

After four weeksthe researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.

Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed.“What we saw is that these animals didn't show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim red lightthey did not.”

Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光的)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleepwake cycle.

He says there's a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.

32Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because ________

Athey are similar to humans in dealing with colors

Bthey are easy to observe and study

Cthey are sensitive to colors like human beings

Dthey are active at night and sleep during the day

33What sign shows that the hamsters are depressed?

AThey drink less sugary water.

BThey don't sleep well.

CTheir eyesight becomes worse.

DTheir energy level becomes low.

35________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.

ADim light  BRed light

CBlue light  DDarkness

35What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?

ANot being exposed to dim red light when using computers.

BEquipping their computer screen to put it more in the reddish light.

CLiving or working in low levels of light overnight.

DGoing to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.

Steps to setting your own rules—and keeping them!

Google “rules to live by” and you're met with thousands of search results. But how do you know which rules to follow  16   Fortunately, here is a 3step process to help you set your own rules. That way, you can actually follow your own advice and do what works for you.

Step 1.  17  This can be a goal you want to achieve or a quality you want to own. Once you've decided what you want, you must determine why you want it. Knowing your “why” will take care of your “how”

Step 2.Evaluate what's not currently working. Once you know what you want and why you want it, it's important to look at what's not currently working in your life. If you want to eat healthily, you need to identify what you're currently not doing.  18  This will prevent you from repeating mistakes.

Step 3.Determine what your “ends rule” and your “means rule” will be. These rules should be a guideline that moves you towards your goals. A means rule is what you need to do to get started performing that rule.  19  An ends rule is what you would like your rule to be. For example, “I never miss a workout.”

But you can set yourself up to win by making your rule really easy to meet in the beginning. If you're unsure of what your means rule should be, ask yourself, Would I need to motivate myself to do X?”  20

Once you set your own rules, they become rules with no exception. Take action and they'll keep you on track with your goals.

ASet a goal and determine to achieve it.

BAs an example, “I want to lose weight.”

CDecide what you want and why you want it.

DIf you answer no, that's a good place to start.

EWrite down everything that isn't working, or hasn't worked before.

FWith so much information available online, it's easy to feel confused.

GFor example, “I always put my workout clothes on when I get home from work.”
