On keeping a Diary in English

Keeping a diary in English is one of the  46 (effect) ways to improve our English writing ability.

47 (compare) with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes  48  time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English.  49 we persist in this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many  50 difficult. In the first place,  51  often happens that we have trouble  52 (find) appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly.

As far as I 53 (concern), my suggestion is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is 54 great use to keep a diary in English for 55 development of our writing skills.

Modern computer technology has made online friendship possible. Online friends are people who have known each other through the Internet. Are online friendships as beneficial as face-to-face friendships? Can people form strong relationships online?

When you use social networking websites and chat rooms, you can easily find people with interests and hobbies similar to yours. Making friends on the Internet is especially good for shy people who feel uncomfortable in social situations. It’s often easier to share thoughts and feelings online. What’s more, online friends can make people feel less lonely and help them solve problems.

Although the Internet can encourage friendship, it has a major disadvantage. It’s much easier for some people to deceive others because they are not face to face. Online friends only tell you what they want you to know. They sometimes exaggerate(夸大) their good qualities and hide the less positive ones, so you can’t be sure of what they really like.

There are different answers to the second question. Researchers surveyed 2,000 families in the US. The results showed that over 40% of participants(参与者) feel as strongly about their online friends as they do about their offline friends. Researchers also found that it’s not unusual for online friends to become face-to-face friends. However, there are many people who believe that it’s not possible for people to have deep relationships with online friends.

People continue to express different opinions about online friendship. However, most of them would agree that face-to-face friendship cannot be replaced by online friendship. As one life coach says, “A social networking site should only be the ‘add on’ in any relationship.”

A conflict at work is common. If you can avoid conflict, it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed, it will simply reappear later. Here are the necessary steps to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.

★Be aware of the fact that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it's not the end of the world. On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.

★ Deal with conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from something that wasn't said! Everyone's waiting for the other to admit he's wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It's essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before it gets to that point.

★ Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don't understand their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference.  Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there's a good reason why that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort.

★ Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it's worth it to you to solve the conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with, but it's a great way to move forward.

①Many companies that enlarge their market to another country have to familiarize themselves with the culture of that country, as the more they know about their new customers, the better they will know about the market. These companies also need to know the educational content, policies and systems of the target country in order to judge its needs.

②By understanding the education of the target country, we take a look at the values of the country. For example, there is a great emphasis (强调) on good education in Japan. Throughout the country, Japanese children are taught that hard work and self-discipline are the highest values. An international company operating in Japan would have to add those values to its marketing strategies.

③Education, to a large degree, can reflect people’s needs. Take Japan for example, because of its emphasis on good education, most of the products it needs are related to education. An international toy company in Japan would not concentrate on selling toys which are for fun, but rather on games, books and activities that can teach children a practical skill.

④The emphasis on a certain type of training in a culture-specific educational system can also show that country’s particular viewpoint towards what is important in business relations. For example, a company operating in a fast and business-oriented (以商业为导向的) country such as the U.S. would emphasize

these two features during its training. This means that mail is replied to quickly

and phone calls are returned on the same business day in the American market.

An international company would have to adjust to how it deals with business based on these features, if it wants to break into the American market.

⑤Education is a key factor (因素) in international business. Understanding the educational content, policies and systems of the target country is the first step to reach a win-win situation.

56.    What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?

A.   Japanese people think highly of good education.

B.  Education can show a country’s values.

C.   How to make marketing strategies in Japan.

D.  Japanese children all get good grades in school.

57.    The underlined word “reflect” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by                      _.

A. meet                         B. understand                 C. change                       D. show

58.    It can be learned from the passage that                   _.

A.   toys for amusement may be unpopular in Japan

B.  people’s needs determine education and values

C.   it’s unwise to enlarge market in another country

D.  Japanese people are ready to learn knowledge at any time

59.    Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.   Americans prefer to test a company’s customer service.

B.  All the international companies are business-oriented.

C.   Replying to mail is the most important thing in the American market.

D.  International companies should change the way of doing business based on different situation.

Nearly five years before, and with the help by our father, my sister and I planted some cherry tomatoes in our back garden. Since then—for all these year—we had been allowing tomatoes to self-seed where they please. As result, the plants are growing somewhere. The fruits are small in size, but juicy and taste. There are so much that we often share them with our neighbors. Although we allow tomato plants to grow in the same place year after year, but we have never had any disease or insect attack problems. We are growing wonderfully tomatoes at no cost!

Some of the best things in life don’t happen until you grow old enough to recognize them. I can say that about tea.

I didn’t start to drink tea until I was 35. What happened before that? The first time I felt a genuine urge to drink tea was in 2003, when I stayed briefly in the United Kingdom. After a time of consuming local food, I started to really like strong black tea. Although it was too strong to my tongue, I felt it was a necessity because it was comforting to my body.

I took packs of green teas with me as gifts but was disappointed to find my British friends preferred much stronger black teas from Sri Lanka. Later I learned that although people know China for its teas, it ranks only third among the world’s black tea exporters, after Sri Lanka and Kenya.

After I came back to China and started to cover food stories, I met friends in the tea-drinking circle and learned more. Although the majority of the rest of the world drinks black tea, which the Chinese call“red tea”, China produces and drinks mostly green teas.

I feel lucky to be Chinese because of the great variety of teas available in the country. It is estimated that there are more than 2,000 teas in China if you divide them geographically, including more than 600 locally famous brews. A more simple way to categorize (分类) is by color and extent of fermentation (发酵). That comes down to six main categories—green, white, yellow, dark-greenish (oolong), red and black teas.

Tasting teas can be compared to our lives. They can be plain and predictable but sometimes they are full of pleasant surprises. Occasionally they can even seem too good to be true. The best thing is, you know there’s always more to explore.

4. Which country ranks first among the world’s black tea exporters?

C. Kenya    D. United States

A. manager    B. journalist

D. tea in China can be divided into more than 2000 categories geographically

Mistakes are common in our life. But attitudes on them may make a difference.

I still remember how my spoken English improved. At the beginning, I always kept

silently in the oral class to avoid to making mistakes. Before long my teacher knew

about my situation. He encouraged me to speak out that I wanted to speak. Whenever I

made mistakes and felt discouraging, my teacher and classmates will help me find out

how I could avoid it in the future. Practice makes perfect. With time went by, I built up

my confidences, and now I can talk fluently in English. Just as saying goes, mistakes are

where success lies. We just need to learn a lesson from the mistakes.

Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

 16   Try the following steps.

Calm yourself. 17   You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. _18__Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain.Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the help, beauty and kindness around you.

19 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. _20__ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. Why should you forgive?

B. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

C. How could you start to forgive?

D. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.

E. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

G. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
