Families changing
What does “family” mean to you--- a place of happiness, a house of love, or a shelter from hardship? For a country, families mean more than all of that. A small change in the average family can have a big impact 25______ society.
That’s why the government keeps track of changes in Chinese families. On May 13, it issued the 2015 report on family trends in China, 26______ (cover) 32,494 families across our country.
One of the most significant changes for Chinese families is 27______ they have kept shrinking, from 5.3 people on average 60 years ago to 3.35 today. The family planning policy has played a big role in cutting Chinese families down into 28______ (small) ones. Introduced in the 1970s, the policy has slowed down the growth of the young population and helped cause the older population to make up a larger part of the total.
But this trend has led to new challenges for the country---a shrinking labor force and a growing number of elderly people. 29 ______ (keep) developing rapidly and better support the elderly, almost all provinces and municipalities have given the green light to couples who want to have two children 30______ one of the two parents is an only child.
China’s quick urbanization has also led more of the labor force to move to big cities, creating new types of family. If your parents work in another city, they are part of the country’s recurrent families, 31______ make up 17.2 percent of the total.
But China is by no means the only country that 32______ (see) an increase in the diversity of family types in recent years. The UK, for instance, has the most single-parent families among major countries in Europe.
Any time we have to wait, many of us get nervous. Our minds are filled with all kinds of what-ifs.What if the results were bad? What if I failed the final? We try to focus on our work, but the bad thoughts surround us like a pack of wolves. We try to relax, but we just feel too anxious.
Many circumstances in our lives come with a waiting period, which can trigger our anxiety. We probably know that worry isnt very helpful and that it only hurts our health. But we also probably can’t stop. Below are the suggestions for reducing worry while we wait.
Take deep breaths. Sit in a comfortable position with eyes closed. Breathe in, count to five, and then breathe out slowly. Repeat as often as you need. Remember that our breath is available to us at any time. Even one deep breath can help.
Recite(背诵)helpful words. Come up with words of encouragement that you can tell yourself. For example, “I am strong and brave and can get through this.”“ I believe myself and my abilities.” “I am deserving.”
Lead a mindful life. Staying present focused is the key to managing anxiety. One strategy is to give tasks your full attention. For example, if you are doing the dishes, notice how your hands feel touching the sponge(海绵), notice the smell of the soap, focus on the sound the water makes as it hits each dish, etc.

Easier access to visas and international environment are the UK’s great attractions for Chinese students. Good news: There many new scholarships this year, both from the government and universities, such as the Scotland International Scholarship. Concerns: Money. Money. Money. It’s expensive to study in the UK, with an average cost of 200,000 to 300,000 Yuan a year. Useful link: www.educationuk.org.cn The US has always been on the top destination list for Chinese students, with its high education standards and enough scholarship. Good news: It’s easier to get a US student visa nowadays. Last year, the refusal rate was only 20 to 30 per cent, much lower than a few years before, according to US Embassy. Concerns: There’re a lot to prepare. The TOFEL, GRE... It’s longer time to apply to US universities than schools in the UK or Australia. Useful link: www.usembassychina.org.cn The UK

Young people are perhaps better-known for spending money than saving it. But some new banking websites are seeking to change that. These websites offer young people the information and tools they need to watch over their money. The websites also let the users share their financial experiences with other young people.
Nineteen-year-old Alix Scott has been working at a store this summer. She is saving money to pay for college next year. “I have to save for all my college money because my parents can’t afford to co-sign on loans. So, I have to rely on my own savings.”
But instead of putting her money in a local bank, Miss Scott began using SmartyPig, a web-based banking service.
SmartPig was developed by Michael Ferrari with a friend in 2007. It is really all about helping people save for very specific goals, such as a wedding, a vocation or an IPhone.
MICHAEL FERRARI said : “For example, you want to save five thousand dollars for a vacation in three years. SmartyPig will actually calculate how much money you need to save every month. You don’t have to move from your existing bank, we’ll actually go in and withdraw those funds on the day you specify every month and we’ll put it into your SmartyPig account, where it’ll earn interest, as well.”
SmartyPig also enables outsiders to add money to the accounts of its users. “Perhaps a holiday is coming up or your birthday is coming up, and rather than getting a gift, your friends, your family can actually contribute to any of your SmartyPig goals.”Mr.Ferrari said. He believes that as technology continues to develop, more and more people will use the electronic banking sites.
A growing number of young people have shown an interest in online banking sites like SmartyPig. They say they like the ease of operation and services the sites offer. These personal finance websites offer tools that help users follow their spending, set up a budget, and combine their investments. And they all involve social media, which interests young adults who are already at ease about sharing their personal information online.

It was Saturday morning. I heard loud noises of moving furniture in the next room. I could almost feel the excitement of John who was soon going to get a room of his own. I remember my own feelings when I was 13. I knew how much he longed for his right to privacy (私人空间) when he was sharing a room with his younger brother, Robot. He said, “Mum, Can I please have a room of my own? I could use Jeff’s. He won’t mind.”
It was true that Jeff had graduated from college and flown from the nest. But would he mind? The room was the place where I told him a thousand stories and we had a thousand talks. As close as we were, though, the time came when Jeff needed a door between us. His life was spreading into areas that had less to do with family. I no longer could-or should-know everything about him.
It turned out that getting Jeff’s permission was easy. He said, “Of course, Mum, it would be selfish of me to hold on to it.” Then his voice softened, “Mum, I won’t be living at home again---you know that.” Behind his glasses, his eyes were lit with all the love. There were no door closed here---they had all opened up again.
As John and I were cleaning the room, I fixed my eyes on Jeff’s things around me and could almost touch the little boy I knew was gone forever. I looked at the room and, in my heart, I let it go. To hold on would be, as Jeff said, selfish. Now it was time for John, shouldering through the door, his eyes bright with promise of independence, to disappear behind the door. It was time for letting go to happen again.
21. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. John was moving to live with his brother.

D. Jeff refused to let his brother have his room.
22. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably means “______”.
A. Jeff finally flew out of the house B. Jeff would have less to do with his family
C. Jeff needed his right to privacy D. Jeff got tired of those familiar stories
23. How did the author feel about her children’s sense of independence?
A. Delighted. B. Jealous (嫉妒的). C. Confused. D. Embarrassed.
24. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. the children did not like to live with adults
B. all her three kids made the author feel depressed
C. none of the members in the family thought the same way
D. the author loved and missed the time together with her kids

Mistakes are something did, said or believed, as a result of wrong thinking or understanding, lack of knowledges or skills. No one is perfect, but no one makes no mistake. Because many people are afraid of making mistakes, we don’t believe, say or do much. They behaved like this just because they want to make no mistake. As I said, it’s impossible. Being afraid of making mistakes is mistake itself. Only through mistakes can there be discover or progress. Making mistakes for seeking truth is much more better than doing nothing. Mistakes are the best teachers which guide us through difficulties. Don’t let mistakes scare you. Let’s learn on mistakes.
