Take a look around a typical UK engineering firm today, and you'd be lucky to see more than a handful of female employees. In an age when we can be proud of gender, equality, engineering continues to stand out as one of few remaining male-dominated ( 男人为主导的 ) industries. 36_________.

The shortage of female engineers is obvious. Research found that only 8.7% of professional engineers in the UK are women. 37__________. And the UK is heading for an engineering skills crisis. If this problem is not dealt with over the next decade, the country's reputation for engineering excellence could disappear.

38__________. According to Engineering UK, the sector will need to employ 2.2 million people over the next five to ten years to meet the demand. That amounts to a 40% increase, primarily driven by sector growth.

39_________. Year after year, we see young women even doing better than their male peers in maths and science exams ---both basic technical skills for an engineer. More and more, the industry is telling us they need engineers who not only have good technical skills, but also   good communication skills to work effectively in a team. Here too, women have strong skills.

So why aren't there more female engineers? 40________. Based on Roevin' s research, 57% say the industry's reputation is the biggest barrier to a career in engineering. Engineering is too often viewed as a male career choice. This makes it more challenging to inspire the next group of young women to enter the profession.

C. In the UK in particular, it seems to be the industry’s reputation that is holding women back.

E. Engineering provides an interesting and varied career for intelligent individuals.

F. There are reasons why women should stand out in this field.

G. The shortage of female engineers is a challenge around the world.

If you want to write a movie script (脚本) yourself but don’t know how, what would you do? The following can be of some help to you.

There are only three parts necessary in a script: the Scene Heading, the Visual Exposition and the Dialogue.

The Scene Heading begins with either “EXT.” or “INT.”. EXT. shows that the scene takes place outdoors, while INT. is used when the scene takes place indoors, for example, inside a room. After that, the exact place of the scene is given, such as “HOTEL ROOM.” The last thing that must be mentioned is whether it is NIGHT or DAY.

The Visual Exposition is a description of the action or movement that takes place on the screen, and should include ONLY what you would see if you were watching the screen. For the first time, and only the first time, a character appears in the script, the name is capitalized (大写), and should be followed by a short description that includes age and build, for example:

The Dialogue follows the Visual Exposition. Each character’s name should be capitalized in the center of the page, followed by the words that are to be spoken on the next line. Do not include any description of feelings before the lines of dialogue. If you consider it necessary to show a character gives a line in a certain way, for example, “angrily,” this should be included in the Visual Exposition above the lines, such as, “Cynthia’s face shows her anger.” But remember, Visual Exposition should ONLY show action we can see.

25. In a script the Scene Heading tells _________ the story takes place.

A. where and when                            B. at what time of a day

C. what has happened when                  D. on which day of the week

26. If a story takes place in a park on a Friday morning, which of the Scene Headings is right?

A. INT. FRIDAY-DAY.                               B. EXT. FRIDAY-NIGHT.

C. INT. PARK-NIGHT.                               D. EXT. PARK-DAY.

27. The Visual Exposition in a script only includes actions or movements _________.

A. that some main characters do                       B. that can be seen on the screen

C. that the writer of the story describes                D. that happen in outdoor activities

Encouragement, what is a kind of power, is very important.

Failing my English exam once got me casting down. My teacher encouraged me not to lose hearts. He said it was no big deal to fail a exam and what mattered was to figure out the reasons instead of feeling sorry for me. I looked into my English paper and realized that the reason why I failed was because I had two weeks’ sick leave. So I made up for the lessons I have missed and my efforts was paid off in the following exams.

Encouragement is great benefit to me and I’ll give it to those who are in need of it.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we’re while we’re eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we watch TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.

New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.

However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often, “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”

Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率) or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There’s only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one point four years to life.

Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving. That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.

Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.

9The underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________

A. dangerous            B. common                  C. comfortable           D. awkward

10Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katzmarzyk?  ________

A. Sitting too long may help increase one’s life.

B. Exercise is important and don’t sit too long.

C. Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one’s horizons.

D. Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.

11What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4?  ________

A. It’s a study that begins too late.                      B. It’s a hot subject studied by experts.

C. It’s a relatively new area of study.                    D. It’s not ignored by many experts.

12Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more?  ________

A. To offer them the chance to exercise.             B. To improve their work efficiency.

C. To give them more comfort.                            D. To seek pleasure while working.

The other morning on the subway I sat next to an attractive young blonde woman who was reading something on her iPad. She was very well-dressed, carrying a Prada bag with tastefully applied make-up indeed, she had an unmistakable air of wealth, material success and even authority. I suspected she worked as a highly-paid Wall Street lawyer or stockbroker or something of that sort. So, I was curious to see what she was so focused on. The Wall Street Journal perhaps? The Economist?

Quite the contrary; rather, she was concentrating on a romance novel. Then I realized that I have known many women who love romance novels—smart, attractive, successful, “liberated,” modern females who nonetheless find some kind of deep satisfaction and thrill from those hyper-romantic, artificial and extremely unrealistic tales of handsome, manly heroes falling in love with virginal women, enduring a series of adventures, then no doubt having a happy ending.

These romance stories are to literature what hot dogs are to fine food. Yet, the genre(体裁) remains enormously popular. Consider some of these surprising statistics from the good folks at the Romance Writers of America (RWA):

*More than 9,000 romance titles were released last year, with sales of about $1.44 billion (more than triple the taxes produced by classic literary fiction).

*More than 90 percent of the market are women (okay, that’s not at all surprising).

* Readers are typically women between the ages 30 and 54 who are themselves involved in a romantic relationship (betraying the stereotype that only lonely women long for these tales of love and adventure).

*Almost 40 percent of romance book consumers have an annual income of between $50,000 and $99,900 (placing them firmly in the middle class).

I had thought that romance novels accounted for a very small share of the literary market, so I was quite surprised that this part has such enormous popularity. But I must wonder why so many women—forty years after the women’s liberation movement—continue to enjoy themselves in the fanciful tales?

I’m not sure if it represents a kind of “rejection” of the women’s liberation movement, but clearly something is missing in the lives of contemporary ladies. A romance author named Donna Hatch who focuses on the Regency period (early 19th century Britain) explained the appeal of such books this way: “Regency men were civilized and treated women with courtesy. When a lady entered the room, gentlemen stood, doffed their hats, offered an arm, bowed, and a hundred other little things I wish men still did today. But they were also very athletic; they hunted, raced, boxed, rode horses. They were manly. Strong. Noble. Honorable. And that is why I love them!”

Mrs. Hatch may have expressed the secret desires and attitudes of untold millions of her peers—that is, in the early 21st century, have women grown tired of the burdens and expectations that the “freedoms” they have gained give them? Is this a rejection of modern feminism? Do women long for days of old when men were masculine gentlemen and women were feminine and protected as precious treasures and regarded as possessions?

Perhaps most women (even the ones who get lost in romance novels) do not want to go all the way back but it is obvious,      .

Do you dream of the day you can drive a car? In the United States, teenagers can get their driver’s license when they are only 16 years old, but it feels like forever until that day comes. Trust me, because I’ve been there.

26   But in my opinion, it’s worth it because it means having a lot more freedom. I’m from the rural (乡下的) state of Iowa that doesn’t have much public transportation, and everything there is really spread out. So until I turned 16, my parents had to drive me pretty much everywhere.

27   First, in Iowa, everyone can get their learner’s permit at the age of 14which means you can only drive if your parent is sitting in the seat next to you.

28   In the state of Iowa, if you live more than a mile (1.6 km) away from school you can get a school permit. You can only drive to school and back home. Luckily, I lived just over a mile away from school, so I was able to drive my mom’s car to school.   29

Finally, after taking (and passing) a three-month-long driver’s education course and the final test, I was able to get my driver’s license.   30   It did in fact make life quite a bit easier.

A. I could almost taste the freedom already.

B. Still, on the day of my driver’s test, I was nervous.

C. Getting a driver’s license takes a lot of time and energy.

D. The next step was getting my school permit at the age of 15.

E. There were several steps before I got that special plastic card.

F. To many people, getting a driver’s license involves a lot of luck.

G. But if you were caught going outside that route (路线) you would get in big trouble.

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.

If you look carefully at the plants around you you will find that there are two kinds of plants flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed some have two three or four and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores(胚芽)。 Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. What should you think about in trying to find your career(职业)? You are probably better at some school subjects than others.   16   A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career.   17    So it is important to do well at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard.   18   Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
19   If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself.   20   Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
A. It is better to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist.
B. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work.
C. He may do well in his future work.
D. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value.
E. Your school must have taught you the skills.
F. These may show strengths

G. If you have had a part-time job on Saturday or in the summer, think what you gained from it.

I almost didn’t wake up in time for school this morning. I stayed up late last night, prepare my lessons. The alarm clock does go off, but I didn’t hear them because I was too tired. It was already 7 o’clock when I opened my eye. The first thing I was aware was that I would be late. Terrified, I ran to school and without having breakfast. I didn’t want to be criticized by the teacher, nor I want to be laughed at by my classmates. Lucky, I rushed into the classroom in the last minute. We had a test today, for that I was well-prepared and it was so easy a exam that I got high marks. What an exciting experience!

A group of people from Denmark have formed the B-Society. According to them, human beings are divided into types: A-People, and B-People. A-People have no problem getting up in the morning, and operate much better earlier in the day. However, B-people are better later in the day. “I’m useless early in the morning,” says one of the members of the B-Society.”All I can do is drink coffee, and stare into space. People used to get up early because they had to feed the animals. But I haven’t got any cows or chickens, so I can sleep late,” She adds. Since the society was set up, the B-Society has welcomed several thousand members.

Right now, the B-Society is fighting hard for businesses to join its B-certification (证明) list. Companies that are “B-certified” basically give their employees the opportunity to come in when they want. In some companies, employees arrive at any time up to 3:30 pm --- each to their own rhythm (节奏).

And it is not just businesses that are benefiting from this. Teenagers who can’t get out of bed in the morning, and parents who never quite get the kids to school on time, can now benefit from B-classes. From next year, a school in Copenhagen will offer classes which start later in the day (at 10 instead of eight). And even the government seems to like the idea.

The B-Society was founded by Camilla Kring, a professor from the University of Copenhagen. On her website, she says, “When B-people’s work rhythms are considered at the work place, their productivity (生产力) and quality of life is increased, which can increase productivity for the entire organization.”

She adds that, “B-Society will create a new daily rhythm in schools and other institutions (机构) as an alternative to the current rhythm of ‘early at work and early at home’. We are working for the establishment of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools as well as universities that open between 10 am and 8 pm.”

Whats your dream vacation?Watching wildlife in Kenya?Boating down the Amazon?Sunbathing in Malaysia? New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, compare packages and prices, and pay our money.

We know what our vacation costs us.But do we know what it might cost someone else? It's true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign income.Unfortunately,though.tourism often harms the local people more than it helps them

It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar.5.200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas(佛塔)in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas.

Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood(生计)and dignity(尊严).Local workers often find only jobs with slim salaries in the tourist industry. And most of the profits(利润)do not help the local economy. Instead, profits return to the tour operators in wealthier countries,When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven(驱赶)from their lands, some moved to city slums.Others now make a little money selling souvenirs or posing(摆姿势)for photos.

Problems like these were observed more than 20 years ago.But now some non-government organizations, tour operators and local governments are working together to begin correcting them.Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure.

The result is responsible tourism,or ethical tourism.Ethical tourism has people at its heart.New international agreements and codes of conduct(行为准则)can help protect the people's lands homes, economies and cultures. The beginnings are small, though, and the problems are complex.

But take heart. The good news is that everyone, including us,can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit Tour operators and companies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages.

They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotel restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourism.

What can tourists do?First,we can ask tour companies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then make our choices and tell them why.And while we're abroad,we can:

Buy local foods and products, not imported ones.

Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price.

Avoid flaunting wealth.

Ask before talking photographs of people. They are not just part of the landscape!

Let's enjoy our vacation and make sure others do,too.
